The Powder Room at the NY Daily interviewed Karina Smirnoff about her makeup tips and she gave some great ones too to those interested. Karina also discusses how the makeup philosophy has changed on Dancing With The Stars….
PR: Any beauty blunders you wish you could forget?
KARINA: I think I must have been 8 or 9 years old, watching one of the girls two classes ahead of me do her bangs – and back in the day, they used to do bangs with lots of hairspray and you would take the curling iron and make this curve. I thought, ‘”That looks awesome!” So I put a cheap, really hot curling iron to my bangs … and they burnt off! It was old-school hairspray. Just burned them right off. It was very traumatic. I had a little halo around my forehead.
PR: What’s the makeup philosophy at the show?
KARINA: We used to be the queens of makeup, but now I think we’re trying to go for a more natural look. Which I totally support. I agree it’s show business, so we need a show look. But I would much prefer seeing us all in just everyday makeup. I think natural is prettier than excessive amounts of makeup.
PR: What are your go-to beauty products?
KARINA: Personally, I try to use less when I’m not on camera or dancing. The skin gets tired of makeup. I do like YSL foundation, and I love Stila – they have great foundation, I love their eye shadows and the lip glosses are awesome. I love Clé de Peau Beauté’s compact powder because it’s really pretty, and I love the way it feels and the coverage. And I always have mascara on me. I prefer Giorgio Armani’s Eyes to Kill in Steel Black. It’s a rich black, and creates the longest lashes. People ask me if they’re real – I try not to give that secret away.
