DWTS Carrie Ann Inaba Speaks Out About Brooke Burke Charvet And Erin Andrews
Carrie Ann Inaba has spoken with E Online about Dancing With The Stars letting go of Brooke Burke and hiring Erin Andrews to take her place. Like us, Carrie Ann was shocked and saddened….
“I was floored,” Inaba told me at last night’s World Gold Council and LoveGold pre-Oscar party in honor of Oscar nominee Lupita Nyong’o. “I immediately texted her to see if she was OK.”
ABC announced on Monday that Burke-Charvet is being replaced by sports reporter Erin Andrews.
“We all know this kind of stuff happens in our business and we all have to be prepared and nothing’s forever and you have to be willing to change, but it was shocking,” Inaba continued. “I’m not going to lieβI was shocked and saddened.”
And here are Carrie Ann’s thoughts about Erin…
Describing Andrews as “really tough,” Inaba said, “I think it’s going to change the vibe of the show a little bit.
“I think that when she’s asking questions she’s going to push some buttons a little bit,” she said. “I’m curious to see how that’ll work.”
I’m curious about that too? I have to admit with all of the changes now, I’m getting such a dark feeling right now? Help Everyone. π

The celebs and pros are under enough stress as it is. They don’t need to have their buttons pushed.
Totally agree with you about the season, Vogue! π
I have the same dark feeling. Some of the male pros have very dark personalities (Maks, Val, Tony, & sometimes Mark depending on his partners dance ability). With Derek gone I will be gone too but to all who love these pros enjoy this season π
Me too Vogue. I’m just not feeling good about this and add to it the pro shakeup and things may go downhill quickly. (at least for me).
You know it’s bad when I’m actually agreeing with Carrie Ann – a dark cloud has definitely descended upon this season already. Between the Chmerkovskiy faction dominating the pros, a hard-hitting former Chmerkovskiy partner getting hired as a host, and the band getting fired, it’s as if they’re actually trying to create this dramatic climate. It’s like Cutthroat Ballroom or something…and I don’t know that it’s going to have the intended effect of increasing ratings. I’m really trying hard to stay optimistic, but I’m getting some really, really bad vibes already…
Exactly Vogue! Tom can push buttons in a nice way. Who needs that sports mentality pushing buttons? After a demanding week of learning to dance, do these “stars” need to be questioned? Just let them dance. If she tries it with Maks, it could be amusing. But that’s a whole different show. I loved the way Samantha Harris teased everyone. That’s how it should be done.
Where oh where is my fun, pleasant entertaining show going? It is turning into a not so good, dark “fam”ily show. Well, it will free up my Mondays. No more voting and I can watch Castle live instead of OnDemand.
We are all with you, Vogue! Thank goodness for YouTube to see DWTS when it was creative and enjoyable (note: not Seasons 1-3, but you’ll see that recreated in Season 18) Yaaaaawwwwwnnnn!
+1 all of you! I agree and I’m so glad I’m not alone with this dark feeling. hugsss xxx
We’ll I for one am excited. I liked Samantha Harris but not so much Brooke I am willing to give Erin a try before condemning her just because she danced with maks
Add me to the dark feeling club.
I think we need a name.
I’m actually curious to see Erin,I liked her on DWTS, especially bc she didn’t put up with Maks’s crap and I think she is witty with a great sense of humor. I have to see her first before I decide. As for Brooke, I think she is a lovely lady but a boring host and I can t say I regret her departure that much.
As far as the pros I totally agree…a season of Maks, Tony, Val, Mark is as dark as it gets. So, if they are trying to cut costs does this mean these were the cheapest pros? I’m not a big Tristan fan but damn if I won’t root my ass of for him and Henry this season.
I wonder what change(s) the show is going to have to make so Erin actually has something to do. The only things I can come up with is the return of a place for the pros and their partners to hang out backstage or Erin standing next to Tom the entire time, asking the hard hitting questions.
The last thing I want is a hard hitting celebrity dance show but I do wonder if DWTS looks at a lot of other reality shows and sees that arguments, drama and backstabbing sells.
Lea, you’re making assumptions – most of us don’t care that Erin danced with Maks. We dislike her because of the way she acted when she was on the show, and how she continues to act as a reporter. Sounds like you’re seeing what you want to see…
My exictment was like 100% for this season and now had dipped to like 50%, this cast has to be really good to make up for everyhting π
I have to agree about dreading the ‘hard hitting’ questions, if indeed that’s how this is headed. It’s a freaking ballroom dancing competition, complete with semi-celebrities. Why can’t it just be fun? My least favorite part of the show as it stands is the last few weeks, where the celebs are under so much pressure. Bill Engvall did so well last season because yes, he worked hard, but he never stopped having fun. That’s how that not-very-good dancer made it so far. Did the producers learn nothing from that?
I feel like there’s definitely something NOT-KOSHER going on in DWTS-ville, if Carrie Ann is expressing some doubts and negativity about the Brooke/Erin thing…….
I don’t think I’ve EVER seen/heard her express anything bad about any of the other changes the show’s done over the years.
I was excited to see Henry make Pro but NOT excited that Tony is STILL in the game. WHY??? His choreo is stale. I agree with Vogue, Court and Lori…I smell a rat. Not gonna watch. Very disappointed and sad.
Well I’m still going to watch, I’ve watched every episode since season 3, but a LOT of the joy in the show has disappeared.
Everything is in the mind of the beholder Courtney. Just to say have an open mind is a good thing. Then judge. Same for the celebs based on them and how they do not just on who their pro is. But that’s just me
The only silver lining I can see to the dark cloud that’s descending is if even with Derek gone, the C brothers lose. I would looooooooove that. I hope there is a couple I like enough to vote so I can add my energy to this mission. If Emma or Tristan or Henry or Sharna(or Mark?) is paired well, I’m there.
I am going to go out on a limb & say I think one of the girl pros will take their partner all they way. Especially if the rumor is true & Charlie White is on this season.
Yeah…don’t really need you lecturing anyone here on keeping an open mind, Lea. You’re free to do it yourself – but I would advise not trying to tell everyone else how to act. Generally isn’t too well-received around here.
Yeah, I’ll have my own mind too, lol. I had a really bad feeling very early yesterday just didn’t know it would be THIS bad !! And I wouldn’t be quite as upset (but still upset not seeing him dance) but Meryl being on and NOT dancing with Derek, it’s almost like they HAD to take away a little of his history-making glory.
Vogue- how about the “corps of darkness” or “corps des tenebres” if you like French ? LOL
I’m very surprised and reallty smell a rat from so many corners with not just CAI’s statement but some commentators on “news” shows weighing in, all pretty much favoring Brooke or saying if they are using the age and demo as their argument, it’s swill and they aren’t buying.
LOL Mimi to “the βcorps of darknessβ or βcorps des tenebresβ if you like French ?” Loves. Thanks!!
Thanks for all of your replies all!!
Funny thing is Erin wants to be the new Cat Deeley. She is not hard hitting at all but very sweet with the contestants and the judges imo. Maybe she is going to talk back to the judges or something. Sounds awful in any event and while I do like Val I do not want to watch his brother at all. There are as many people who dislike his shenanigans as like them so that will not bring in numbers imo. Derek, fan or not, was undeniably an amazing choreographer. He is going to be so missed. I think the other pros will spend a lot of their routines copying his old ones.
Glad Henry is getting a shot, but at what a cost. Derek, Gleb and Sasha, the Band and Brooke? It’s too sad to think about. Erin is like a double negative and dark describes the vibe well.
Actually, DWTSGossip is now reporting that Derek is back in…go check out the Pro Watch post. π
But now the “darkness” is if he is back, but NOT getting Meryl ?!? Surely, they wouldn’t ?? right ? After all she said she wanted him.
As much as I’d love to see Derek and Meryl (if he comes back) can you imagine what the Derek haters will say?Dear Lord!
@Danna_Iuliana- I think they’re always going to claim that Derek has somebody good or that it’s unfair. I’d rather see good dancing and hear them say it than giving him somebody else and still hear it! haha
The Derek haters always find something to bitch about. May as well give them something REAL for a change. π
If Derek gets Meryl – bitching galore about how “Derek always gets the good partners!”
If Derek gets someone other than Meryl – bitching galore about how “Derek always gets the young, able-bodied partners!”
If Derek gets someone other than Meryl and actually does well – “IT’S NOT FAIR!!!! DEREK SHOULD LET SOMEONE ELSE WIN FOR ONCE!!!”
If Derek sits out this season and Val still doesn’t win – “IT’S ALL DEREK’S FAULT!!! VAL DESERVES AN MBT!!!”
If Derek gives up dancing altogether and joins a Buddhist temple in Tibet and Val STILL can’t manage to win – “UGH!!! IT’S ALL DEREK’S FAULT!!! VAL WOULD HAVE WON BY NOW IF IT WASN’T FOR HIM!!!”
I think last season they realized likeable contestants and fun partnerships are a win. I think Brooke was long overdue to be replaced. And the band thing is just an attempt to modernize I think. These things don’t put a damper on it for me. A lack of Derek really would so sure hoping it’s true he’s in.
lollll Heidi and Court!!
Why does everyone seem so upset that Derek wins a lot SO It is about the dancing I look at his partners ability If Derek has a great partner don’t they deserve the MBT
I know someone IRL who adores the C brothers and has gone to their studio in NYC to have private lessons with them. She was just there a few weeks ago. Former RN coworker who married an Orthopedic surgeon in our area and now does charity events and such. Has gone to NYC to see Maks and Karina on Broadway in that Tango show and she actually went to pick Maks up at the airport in Cleveland to take him to the Clinic last weekend π
Ok, Ladies I agree with all of you…Haters will hate :)))I must say, althought I don t see the Tristan appeal it was a joy to read one of his interviews where he praises Derek for the genius he is and also states how ridiculous (my word) it is to want Derek off the show just because he wins too much bc that also implies that no other male pro can win while Derek is on the show. Tristan put it more eloquently but that was the idea and he earned my respect. I guess real men have confidence in themselves no matter who their opponent is.
Both of Val’s Freestyles have seriously underwhelmed. It seems that whoever wins the Freestyle, wins the Mirrorball. He could have very easily have won with Zendaya, but that Freestyle was one big yawn. The blame lies with him. Not that he’ll ever acknowledge that.
Derek just gets how to craft a dance that will get people to pick a phone and vote for him and his partner. What the other whiny pro’s don’t realize, especially Val, is that choreography for DWTS and choreography for actual Dancesport competition are two entirely different beasts. Derek knows how to successfully weave both content and entertainment together. He’s got the formula down.
Don’t diss him, learn from him Dude!
Tristan is not only kind, he’s intelligent.
I completely agree # Susan2. If you get your celebrity to the final, the freestyle is all that matters and some pros refuse to get that. Like how, when Zendaya lost, the C bros where saying that the votes should have been for the best dancer overall. Of course they would think that since they suck at crafting a good freestyle. I believe that once you are in the final what you did up until that point has little importance, the freestyle is what wins DTWS. More so when the competition is so close (Kelly – Zendaya, that freestyle won Kelli the trophy hands down, same with Amber. They can bitch as much as they want, but Derek knows how the show works and he has so much talent. While he loves a challenge the C bros would bitch ab the change.
OMG I wish what you said Danna luliana-could be posted everywhere and just seen by everyone, esp certain pros, male and female, and their fans. Thank God, there are still a FEW real men !!
I have watched this show for every season! I’m done. The way the let Brooke know was awful to do to someone. And I dislike Erin’s personality and most of all her VOICE! Think DWTS screwed the pooch on this one!
Erin spouting off about how in awe she is of Nene doesn’t seem like a propitious beginning.
Lets face it Derek is the best dancer of the bunch. We will see how he handles a girl with no legs. should be interesting
Mary, Derek might be the best choreographer, but by no means is he the best dancer! Val has him best on that in terms of actual titles val has 15 national titles.
Sorry Grant. I have to disagree. Just because a person has won more titles means they are “the best”. Also, let’s not forget Derek won the grand daddy of them all….an EMMY! Adding: your opinion is subjective imo.
That doesn’t make him the “best” Grant, especially since he probably never competed against Derek, being a year or so younger. Not to mention that Derek ended his competition days MUCH sooner than Val did. That’s like saying that Val’s a better dancer than Maks – when you don’t know if they didn’t compete against each other regularly.
Vogue, now looking back I feel like they are all great in their own right and it’s kinda hard to compare them. They both are great.
That is tough to measure as Julianne, Mark and Derek all stopped competing when most felt they could have continued to win more. Derek starred on the West End and continued to learn. There is a reason why he is the closer with freestyles. He did the mash up ballroom dances better than Val did with Zendaya’s freestyle. See his freestyle with ?Nicole. One can argue Amber’s fanbase may have gotten her a win no matter but doubt Val could have put that freestyle for Amber.
I think Val, having competed longer, has a more traditional take. See how he always ends every dance with bowing. While he is fine, just don’t think he or the fam have the creativity. They will claim Sharna, but I think her working with Jason Gilkinson is a bigger reason for her creativity and staging skills.
Derek, like Val, are artists IMO. But probably what maybe even subtly may get under all the other pros maybe how Derek excels in arts. He not only plays guitar but drums and piano. He can tap and do multiple dance styles. He has performed on West End etc.
I agree Grant. They all have times when they are the “best”. It’s not about titles. And then there is what Heidi posted about how Derek and Val never were matched up…let alone Maks too and many of the other dancers against him regularly.
I think Maks and especially Val have an almost elitist snobby attitude about Derek and his choreography. Their own choreography is very traditional Dancesport stuff. In fact some of what Val did with Zendaya would have fit right in during a Dancesport competition.
Obviously I’m not inside their heads. but I just get feeling from them that they think their choreography is the “real deal” so to speak and that Derek’s is more showbizzy or as they call it in the ballet world “puffy”, meaning full of showy tricks.
What they fail to understand is that Derek can choreography a traditional competitive dance in his sleep. He’s got nothing left to prove in doing the same Paso over and over again. I think it’s the possibilities that exist beyond the framework of that Paso that excite him and really get his creative juices going.
It’s like the Chmerbros choreograph in black and white and Derek choreographs with every color in the rainbow.
As far as who’s a better dancer between Val and Derek, it really is subjective. I actually like Derek’s dancing better in Standard rather than in Latin, while with Val it’s the opposite. However the one exception was Derek’s Paso with Chelsie set to Spanish guitar music. The intensity, arrogance and speed of his dancing was absolutely breathtaking.
Agreed Vogue. π
You’re right, Susan, and that is their downfall. Derek can do the standard choreo they use in an hour…while napping. It’s too easy for him and it makes the show boring. What they FAIL to realize (and this is why they’ve never won) is that this is TELEVISION, not the usual competition. It’s not just the choreo that’s different between Derek and the C-bros, it’s the mentality. They try to make it real ballroom and make their partners learn their way. Derek makes it for a television audience and tailors his teaching to his partner. He realized a long time ago that the audience has seen a million cha chas – Mark knows this too.
Really, Derek (and Mark) have a much broader base of experience in entertainment and that makes them more creative in the ballroom. The Cbros are much more narrow minded – the ballroom is the ballroom.
Agree with Susan and Heidi. Think since the fam are limited, they rely on we do ballroom mantra. That is why I think Sharnawith Charlie have a huge advantage. Sharna, Emma, Sasha and Henry all worked with Jason Gilkinson who knows about staging and being creative with ballroom,. So while they are newer, they do more interesting choreo than the familia.
Think some pros like Anna realize it. Maybe too late but Anna said on afterbuzz about Amber’s foxtrot, that ultimately it’s a tv show. We need to remember the pro job is to make partner look best while entertaining audience. Derek figured this formula out sooner than most pros.
I’m sad to say that I feel D.W.T.S. has about run the course and the changes they are making seem to confirm that they are running scared. What many of the “Pro” forget is what I heard Derek say last season. “It’s all about learning”. He always seems eager to learn and be taught so he can have a feel for a wide variety of entertainment. I always felt Tony lost the trophy for his partner the second season with his boring Disco. Max has also lacked creative ability when the pressure is on. Kodo’s to those who work with their partner and bring out the best in them. I like Tristan and wish he was still on the show. The new cast looks like it could be a fun season, hope this bad start doesn’t hurt things.
