Dancing with the Stars season 18 week 2 is upon us. What are your thoughts? Are you liking all the changes? I think there’s a mixed feeling about the new band. Many hate it. Many feel bad for the old band. Many hate the music they’re selecting. What do you think? As always, be sure to check out our full list of Dancing with the Stars music throughout the season. That page will update each week as we post the music.

Geez. George Pennachio says there is a surprise in the first half hour.
Like we need more surprises. :::sigh:::
I know! Let’s drink every time there is a camera screw up. Wait…I don’t have enough booze….
Great opening dance by James. He got a tiny bit off time in a couple spots….but this guy is a contender, for reals.
ETA: So Billy Dee is out due to injury. No more elimination or not?? I suspect not since they aren’t doing that stupid elmin stuff before each dance, thank god.
Great dance by Nene. And line of the night goes to Derek Hough: “This lil’ munchkin is ready for you!!” Right to Nene. 🙂
ETA2: Forgot to add to my last update that they made it pretty clear that the switch is for one week then they go back to their original partners. It sounds like no more voting – I’m afraid to hope for that to be true.
Liked Danica and Val’s dance very much, but she struck me as a bit melodramatic and not quite real in her package. I’m afraid that’s just her.
ETA3: Beautiful dance by Meryl and Maks but that was in NO WAY a foxtrot…yet no one said a word about it. Bet they would have if Meryl was dancing with Derek. Interesting how now the couples are definitely going back to each other after next week AND they get 10s on a non-foxtrot. I wonder if someone had a fit? 🙂 Besides most of the fans, I mean. I doubt they listen to us, so what happened? Not that I’m complaining about that part – I’m glad.
I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)
Yahoo interviewed Billy Dee Williams about all of his current projects and why he decided to do Dancing With The Stars. Billy Dee also talked with them about this week’s “most memorable dance” as well as how he feels about the Switch Up Dance. Man, do I ever feel sorry for these celebs having to deal with this. Please TPTB …stop the madness and just cancel the idea. Read on….and don’t forget to watch the fun video below too.
Yahoo TV caught up with Williams to ask him about his decision to compete on the TV dancing competition, the daunting upcoming partner switch, and what he really thinks of those low-scoring judges.
“Well, I certainly was a fan of ‘Dancing With the Stars,'” Williams told us when he was asked about his reaction when he was approached to join the demanding competition. “I was approached by my management. Before I could say no, they were so excited about the whole prospect that they wouldn’t even let me really respond. … Instead of saying no, I found myself saying, ‘Well, OK, let’s see what I can do with this.'”
As for this week’s Most Memorable Year dance, Williams can’t dish on the year he chose, but he did confirm that he and Slater are dancing a waltz. He’s also having fun going down memory lane for his Most Memorable Year routine. Well, sort of. “It’s a combination,” he said. “It’s fun for me, but it’s also, you know, it’s like, ‘What the hell am I doing?'”
Coming next week: The show’s partner “Switch-Up” twist. And like most of the other celebs, Williams isn’t particularly looking forward to swapping his partner for a new one. “I don’t really want to switch up,” he revealed. “She and I have really established a wonderful relationship. I have a tremendous love and respect for her style.”

Below is Maks Chmerkovskiy talking in a MSN Celebrity Bite. He explains why he came back to Dancing With The Stars. He says Meryl Davis is the closest he’s come to ‘dancing with normal people’ since she isn’t dramatic, etc. He also talks of how he’s not doing the show again to win a trophy. If he never wins Dancing With The Stars, that’s ok. It was about meeting the people he has and the experience. Lot’s more below with Maks!
ETA: Don’t miss reading a fun new interview with Meryl at Team USA. She talks of ice skating and the new “Stars On Ice” tour with ice dancing Charlie White. Below is a take for what they asked her about her new dance and the switch up dance on Dancing With The Stars. More at the link. Thanks to Anna for sending.
For the first time in the show’s history, contestants will be switching partners Monday night based on fan voting. How do you feel about the switch-up, and is there anyone you’d like to be partnered with?I’m not a fan of the idea of the switch-up. I feel so comfortable because I’m in the rhythm that Maks and I have developed over the past couple weeks. I’m not encouraging any specific partnership, I think I’ll just go with whomever the audience votes for, especially since it’s required we switch partners and it’s happening, but I hope we switch back.
How are you feeling about your upcoming dance, the foxtrot?
I’m enjoying it. It’s been nice that we’ve had some variety, whether it’s swing, foxtrot or cha-cha, they’re all different. It’s been nice to experience drastically different dances right off the bat.

These are so touching. Below is Drew Carey and Amy Purdy in a preview for what we’ll see in their “Most Memorable Year” packages tonight on Dancing With The Stars.

Candace Cameron Bure has written a new blog for People. She talks of last week’s dance and scores and sets us up for their new dance which is fun, but, hasn’t be an easy one to learn and rehearse for. In fact, she hit a point of exhaustion. More below and at People. Anyone want to take a guess for what their song might be?
This week has proved to be the most fun yet! Mark and I will be dancing the jive to a classic rock and roll song from the 1950’s. I’m excited to get my blood flowing with this fast, bubbly song that I know my family (especially my dad) will be rocking out to.
The most challenging part of this week’s dance is the fast footwork and the stamina I need in order to complete the dance. It’s a minute and 20 seconds, but it’s an all out effort every step of the way. I’m in pretty good shape, but I rarely get my heart rate to such a high intensity for this length of time. Our practices are five hours a day, so learning this routine and running it over and over is a cardio challenge.
On Saturday, I hit my point of exhaustion and couldn’t take another step. Literally. I was lightheaded, on the verge of throwing up and had to lay down for a while. (Just to assure you, I am getting my proper nutrition by eating six small meals a day provided by Freshology fitted to my needed caloric intake and drinking a lot of water and sport drinks for electrolytes.) At that point, I knew I needed to cancel my attendance to the Kids’Choice Awards because my body needed to rest.
It was an important lesson for me, listening to my body, knowing when to say ‘no’ and not feeling guilty about it. Of course, I didn’t want to disappoint my kids and immediately called my friend and asked if she would take them so they didn’t miss the show, which she did. A mom is always a mom first!

So for those of you who had the “2.5 weeks” slot in the “How Far Into This Season Can Maks Last Without Saying Something Douchebaggy?” poll, congrats – you win the satisfaction of knowing that some people never change. 🙂 He dropped this gem on Saturday, probably not realizing what a slap in the face it was to every other male pro whose name is not Chmerkovskiy – and really, the use of the word “trust”? What do you think they’re gonna do, Maks? Steal her social security number? What he fails to realize is that Meryl trusted Derek before she ever met either of those Chmercocky brothers – and he’d probably be the one pro that you could count on to make sure Meryl made it through to the next week so that she could be reunited with you, Maks. But go ahead, please – keep throwing more fuel into the karma cloud already forming above you this season. 🙂
Anywho – I apologize for not dropping an update on you guys as I promised on Friday, but I got so wrapped up in closing out Q1 at work and then packing and heading down to Louisville ComiCon that I just ran out of time. No joke – I was in my PJ’s in my hotel room on Friday night, ready to sit down and write it up, when my lovely roomies came barging in with Manu Bennett (Slade from the tv series Arrow), Scott Wilson (Herschel from The Walking Dead), and Jon Bernthal (Shane from The Walking Dead) in tow, ready to do some Fireball shots. Needless to say, I got a bit distracted. 😛 That didn’t last long, though, because Heidi brought a rather disturbing observation to my attention on Saturday: whether TPTB intended it or not, this partner switch voting has been rigged in the Chmerkovskiy brother’s favor the whole time. Why, you ask? Because they’re counting tweets containing both Val & Valentin, and Maks & Maksim. While that may not seem like a huge deal, it does when you take into account that you can put both #DWTSMerylVal and #DWTSMerylValentin into a tweet and have it count as two votes, while putting #DWTSMerylDerek into a tweet twice will likely get it marked as spam. So potentially, every tweet that contains both variations of the Chmerkovskiy brothers’ names counts twice as much as a tweet with Derek’s name. Wish you all could see the chagrined face I’m making. I can’t decide whether or not it was done intentionally or whether TPTB are really and truly that stupid…I would say both are equally plausible. The problem is, we realized this too late, and there’s really no way for us to know just how much the two-name variation is affecting the hashtag tweeting. Heidi & I have an idea of how to normalize our data a bit, but it ain’t gonna be foolproof. But we already knew this whole partner switch was a clusterf*ck 😛
With about 12 hours to go in the voting (on the east coast – I think it’s 15 on the west coast), there are some tight races going on and some not-so-tight races going on – I would say that Amy’s partner has pretty much been determined, and Charlie’s as well; Meryl is currently been fought over by fans of two different pros; and the rest of them? Nobody seems to care. 😛 No, really – compared to the volume of tweets I’m seeing for Meryl, it’s as if the fans are going “Meh, whatever…they’ll get who they get!” to the rest of the couplings. And as I mentioned in the comments of my previous update post – if you’re using the same hashtag multiple times in the same tweet, it’s likely getting marked as spam; therefore, you’re better off doing a whole laundry list of couple switch hashtags in one tweet (i.e. “#DWTSMerylDerek #DWTSAmyMark #DWTSCharlieCheryl #DWTSBillyDeeSharna) than repeating the same one multiple times. Remember: you’re not only voting FOR your favorite pro to get a certain celeb (or vice-versa); you’ll also want to try and prevent another pro from getting your celeb (and vice-versa) by voting to pair them with someone else. That’s why I think those doing the multiple different hashtags in 1 tweet method are likely having more of an effect on the voting than those putting all of their eggs in one basket and only voting for one pairing.
And speaking of putting all their eggs in one basket: I think some fans are running the risk of leaving their pro to get “whatever’s leftover after everyone else has been paired” because they’re throwing all of their energy into one possible pairing which they have a very slim chance of actually getting. Might not hurt to start tweeting out hashtags for your 2nd & 3rd choices, kids – otherwise, don’t be surprised if a pro that you thought had a lot of clout ends up with NeNe. 🙂
Random interesting fact, courtesy of the awesomeness that is Keyhole: there are fans voting in the partner switch-up from as far away as Slovenia, Madagascar, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Algeria, Nigeria, & Peru. That’s pretty powerful, guys – when fans that can’t even watch the show live are tweeting to vote in the partner switch, you know it’s kind of a big deal.
Voting ends at 11:59 PM EST (Ithink), kids – so let’s finish strong and push those hashtags hard this afternoon & evening. I will try to stay up until midnight and see if I can put out a preliminary “partner-switch predictions” post, but I can’t make any guarantees – needless to say, I’m a bit sleep-deprived after my weekend in Louisville. For those of you curious about some of my antics – @putuincespence on Instagram. That’s all I’m gonna say. 😛
Ultrasound sales specialist by day, semi-knowledgeable DWTS fan by night...with a smattering of hair & makeup enthusiast, occasional model, baker, and crazy cat lady peppered in to make things REALLY interesting ;-) I might pee my pants in happiness if Donnie Wahlberg ever does DWTS - or if they ever use "Sunglasses at Night" as a paso doble.
Cheryl Bure writes that we will see “a more sensitive and vulnerable side of Drew carey tonight on Dancing With The Stars. Their ‘most memorable year’ dance is about when he had his son Conner. Below is more from Access Hollywood.
This week is ‘Most Memorable Year’ and this is always the time in the competition where you really get to know your celebrity and so does everyone else. Some stories are sensitive and emotional, some stories are celebrating a happy moment in that person’s life. For Drew, the most memorable year was 2005, when he had his son Connor, so you’re definitely going to see a more sensitive and vulnerable side of Drew.
The last couple weeks you saw us do the jive and foxtrot, so as you guys know, he’s a performer, he’s a showman, but I think this week is a really important week for him because it means something more. It’s dedicated to his son.
We’re dancing the waltz, which is a different pace for us. We’re used to the faster dances. Dancing slower is actually a lot harder than dancing fast, so we’ve been facing a few challenges and I’ve been pushing him extra hard this week because I know his potential and we really want to try and improve and hopefully get better scores. So it’s definitely been a week of taking it more seriously. We’re still having fun, obviously, but it’s more of an emotional week. We’re thinking about his son and also making it as good as possible because the waltz is a very technical dance.
