Official ABC Dancing With The Stars Season 18 “You Switch” Promo
Below is a new ABC Dancing With The Stars promo from the official site. It makes one even more curious for how they will do the “Switch” partners thing? 😯
ETA: As said in the Press Interview post, pay special attention to Sharna and what she says on the “Switch” dance in the On The Red Carpet interview which we added below. I was trying to keep an open mind. Not sure I like this now?
During Sharna’s interview with OTRC she says that they will switch partners for one week and then the celeb decides whether they want to stay with their original partner or their new one.
Sounds really dumb if you ask me. If that is the whole point of the switch up then I find it so completely pointless.
Sigh.. DWTS… why must you be so… annoying?? lol
Error: geolocation criteria unmet :/
Oh so when Sharna says “then they choose who they stay with” she meant America? Well… damn. I thought she meant “they” as in the celeb… (either way I still don’t like it)
Whew!!! I think CC is right. America chooses the switch and then the celebrity chooses if they will stay with their new partner or return to their old. No worries, sounds like Charlie ain’t going nowhere.
From what I’ve understood, America votes on the switched partner, and then the celebrity decides who they want to work with. I don’t see how it will work? Say Charlie says he wants to stay with Sharna, but Sean worked with Sharna and now wants to stay with her. Clearly that both can’t happen.
I have a feeling that 1, everybody will choose to go back to their original partners as to not hurt feelings. And 2, TPTB is trying to pretend like they know what they’re doing but they really have no idea and are going to play it by ear.
I am so confused on it! I don’t get how they will do this? 😯
I’m with you Kaitlyn. As of now it seems like not even TPTB themselves don’t even know how exactly the Switch Up is going to work. It seems odd to me that Sharna knows exactly what is going to happen and Derek doesn’t (he said it may be a one or two-week thing).
Watching what Sharna said for the 10th time, I think it’s safe to say she left the part about who decides who the celebrity stays with pretty unclear.
I would think that even Meryl would want to stay with Maks even if she got to work with Derek just to be nice (and perhaps also because she already got used to Maks). And not to mention poor Amy who’ll probably form such a tight bond with Derek and then has the chance to have that broken by other people… Ughh. I am dreading whole switch up BS.
I think it would be disrespectful to your partner and the viewers to switch.
@Kaitlyn – Probably original pairing trumps the other, I doubt they could make you switch if the other wanted to stay with theirs.
I’ve just written to Court and Miss Heidi to see what they think as I have never been so confused for how something will take place on this show. -_-
I don’t see how they could pull this off fairly. Even so far as the designated dances left by each couple would be all messed up. The safest way out of this mess is just let everyone go back to their original pairings after 1 week.
My opinion:
#originalpairingsorriot
I think that the goal of this switch-up is to get people talking, which they are. I am not thinking about the switch-up until it is completely clarified by Tom. Not Erin. Not TPTB. Tom.
Perhaps the show will just wing it. They usually seem very comfortable with that.
Also, it depends on how early this switch happens. It would have a different effect on them and us if it happened week 4 than week 8.
I think they should drop it. I was borderline with it being for 1 week. If I’m interpreting correctly it sounds like it will result in a bunch of unnecessary drama.
I honestly don’t expect any of the celebs to say they don’t want their original partner back, even if truthfully they really want to stick with the new one. It would make the celeb look like douche to say otherwise.
Looks like the show needs to officially just come out and state what the rules are with regards to this thing are, because right now they sound like “just roll with it” bunch of nincompoops.
Hopefully, it’s just a one week thing. As others have said, how would it work if the celeb wanted to stay with the new partner but the old partner wanted back too? Would they also have to give 2 Mirror Balls to the pros – the one that took them 1/2 way and the other that took them to the end? Sounds a little too complicated to me.
I actually think this will make this season even more interesting! I think the producers want us to root for the celebrity not the pro!
I feel like in theory it would be a fun idea but in reality not so much.
I just don’t understand how it will work. Maybe if they just did it for a fun round?
Say, it was mid-season and this is the point where they do 2 dances per couple on one night. The first dance (the more serious one the judges score on) is with your original partner and for fun, you switch-off with a new pro that isn’t judged? or maybe they can do it you get 6pts for 1st, 5pts for 2nd, and so on. I don’t know..
Yeah, don’t think there’s a celeb on the show that is foolish enough to not go back to their original.
But ask yourself this…what if only ONE of them says they want to stay with their new partner?? Is the original celeb with that pro just screwed?? Yeah, I don’t think that’s going to happen.
PH that is what I was thinking too. I think that is an awful lot of pressure for the celebs…because it automatically make them look like a b**ch you know.I know we have seen partnerships that don’t work but this opens up a Pandoras box. I thought Sharna was pretty clear. America will choose the new pairings. After one week the celeb can stay with the new partner or return to the old one. Yikes. However it will clearly create drama. It could work in the celebs favor because none of the pro’s are going to want to be the one left behind so perhaps some of them will keep their egos and tempers in control.
I think they can have the Celebs choose to stay with the old one or choose the new one in order of scoring after the dance. They might start with either the lowest scorer or vise-versa. Honestly I don’t think TPTB have this thought out. Maybe we need to give them ideas.
“If you like your partner, you can keep them…”
@Quest – The TPTB seldom think everything through before putting it out on the table. Heidi & I witnessed this firsthand during the all-star season, as we were being fed info by our inside source – the number of changes and tweaks to what we were originally told would make your head spin. The trio dance was supposed to include a former DWTS contestant – obviously that got nixed. The marathon dance was thrown in at the last minute to kill time. They went back & forth between doing a cha-cha relay vs. a samba relay. And the elimination that was supposedly going to be live on the performance show? Yeah, that got tossed out because they couldn’t figure out how to incorporate viewer votes. Their motto certainly seems to be “Announce it first, then figure out the particulars later.” They really should hire Heidi & I to sit in on their meetings in order to point out potential problems and veto sh*tty ideas. 😛
Maybe TPTB will manipulate the “switch” between celebs & pros based on the voting numbers they are seeing. Let’s say for some reason…oh I don’t know….Maks and Meryl aren’t pulling in massive votes as expected and they want to make one or both “happy”or want them to stay, so they would switch with a couple who might be getting massive votes…oh let’s say…. Derek & Amy.
This might be the season that I start drinking.
I was under the impression when Maks “left” he was still under contract to be called back if they needed him. Or am I remembering incorrectly?
I think and see the switch up going like when they pick their dances for each other. Viewers pick the new pro and then wen they have the celeb choose the original pro or new pro the lowest scorer chooses their pro first.
Then by the time the highest scorer’s turn comes around, they get last pick and the chance to get their original pro back if they were taken away. For example Meryl is second to last and Amy is last to pick. Meryl takes Derek (viewer picked pro) away from Amy giving Amy Maks and then Amy turns around and takes him back.
Another scenario would be Meryl takes Derek sending Maks to the person viewers picked for him, therefore Amy automatically gets Mark (viewers pro picked for her) and CCB automatically (if she still has Mark) her VPP. So on and so on. So the top scorers have the opportunity to change everyone’s partner.
I think that made sense. Made sense in my head. 😉
Well I don’t think I like the switch, but I am not going to worry just yet. With their track record, TPTB could chamge their minds about this and do something else.
Probably something just as insane. lol
Maybe if they had the switch-a-roo when half of the contestants have already been eliminated and you vote for who gets to dance with one of the eliminated pros or one of the troupe members for the week, it could possibly work?
I agree with Steve (and could live with that scenario), although there’s probably not enough drama in it to satisfy TPTB.
Bottom line: The producers are fools.
Court, we actually ARE consultants, we just don’t know it. I think they throw stuff out and then come over here to see what we say is wrong with the idea. 😀
I would like to suggest that the contestants that are 50 and over get a concession. For each decade over 50 they should receive one point in addition to the judges scores. If they are 50 to 59…..one point, 60 to 69….2 points and so on.
It is unrealistic that they can physically compete on the same level as younger contestants.
As a viewer it would certainly make me feel less sorry for them.
Thank you
