Private Members Area – DWTS Season 18 Week 7 Discussion
Tonight was week 7 of DWTS Season 18 What did you think of tonight’s show?
I have to say that Latin Night is the best theme night that they do. I still think they reach a little too much with the music and what not, but for the most part Latin night is just good Latin fun. What did you think of Ricky Martin as the guest judge? At least he is Latin and nice for all you ladies to look at.
What did you think of the group dances? Were they scored appropriately? We want to hear your thoughts.
It’s not until next week, but the discussion is already starting around Abby Lee Miller (from Dance Moms) being the guest judge next week. I personally think it’s shameful that they would give her any credence. I’ve never watched her show, but I know enough that I never want to watch her show. I hate that a show like DWTS that has such an amazing rostrum of pros that provide some real validity to the dancing on the show would bring someone like her on as a guest judge.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
I can’t stand Abby Miller. I know someone said in the recap comments that they turn down the volume and watch the dances which they enjoy, but as a former CPS worker…that woman is abusive. I wouldn’t send my dying dog to her. Just because you can get kids to do something by screaming, threatening etc. doesn’t make it right. Ya think I have a few feelings about this. I didn’t like the show so much tonight. Some of the dances were good…but all these super-sized dances are way over the top. What they are doing to Charlie bugs me. If Amy gets voted off I’ll be sending my votes to Charlie. I used to like Meryl, now not so much. And the arrogance of some of the male pro’s makes me want to vomit. All I have to say is the show this season is not like “Party in the USA” it’s more like the Twilight Zone. There is this part of me that thinks maybe Conrad Greene is trying to run this show into the ground since he is leaving.
I had more true “WTF” moments tonight than on ANY of the previous nights of this show.
I actually enjoyed Ricky Martin as a judge. It felt like he let the emotion generated in the room by the dance be his barometer on how he scored the dance (or else he just didn’t get the memo on how to score Charlie and Sharna).
Having never watched an episode of “Dance Moms” I can’t speak about Abby Lee Miller with any kind of authority. I do know that some of my friends with daughters in competitive dance are absolutely appalled that the woman is allowed to teach children.
I saw a blurb on one of my twitter feeds that said the rating for DWTS were ticking up, so I’d guess the producers will continue with what “seems” to be working for them. Wish there was some kind of feedback as to who the new viewers are and what brought them to the show. THAT would certainly be telling.
It’s funny, I’ve been a BTS member of a number of boards, going all the way back to the late 1990’s, and this is the first board I’ve seen where there is like almost NO behind the curtain gnashing of teeth or beating of chests about the board’s main focus.
Angie,
Last I checked the ratings had been doing better or at least had stopped their fall. I think the last time I checked the rating that matters (younger audience) was going up too. So, I’m sure the producers are pleased. Although, with Conrad gone, we’ll see what they do next. Personally, I like all the changes. It’s just one data point, but this girl I play ultimate frisbee with told me that this season of DWTS they’re addicted. I’d never talked to her about it before. It was an interesting response though.
I’m actually surprised there hasn’t been any behind the scenes people commenting about the direction of the site. Although, maybe I should knock on wood. Hopefully that means the site covers the show well.
One of the things I do not understand and don’t like is the adding of the troupe to the dances. The one exception was when the troupe danced with Billy Dee. I believe it made HIM feel good and have a fun experience. I wish they would stop doing that.
I did enjoy Ricky Martin as a judge.
Huh, John (bka Charlie), did she say what hooked her? I actually don’t mind Erin all that much. Brooke was a little stiff and “canned” for my taste. Erin may be rubbing people the wrong way but it feels like there are fewer moments of dead air followed by awkward attempts to vamp.
I like having the Macy’s Stars of Dance back and I think making Derek the artistic director of it was a genius move. However, I do NOT like the addition of the troupe members to so many of the weekly celeb dances. I feel like it takes the focus away from the celeb at times. A couple of times I didn’t mind (the beginning of Amy’s jive comes to mind and altho I thought it was cheesy as hell, for Billie Dee’s dance). But the rest of the numbers I’ve either thoroughly disliked or been mildly annoyed by their prolonged presence (the two Salsa numbers last night and Charlie & Sharna’s jazz number, it was ok for me at the beginning but they weren’t needed at the end.) I just think it’s going to make choreographing a “super-sized freestyle” a bit redundant. I mean, what the heck are you going to have to do to make is “super-sized” at this point? Dancing bear and elephants? Clowns on unicycles? YEESH!
Agreed, but how do you make a policy that says the troupe can only be added to the dance if you suck and we want viewers to see some good dancing? lol
Maybe if they limited it to 1 time per season it would be more tolerable. Plus, I have to admit that last night when they were on with Danica last night, I felt bad for her. I just wanted to watch the troupe and not her.
Angie,
I guess I should change my name;-) I think she said James hooked her. So, I’ll be interested to see if she lasts to another season or if it was more typical one person fandom. Although, I’m quite sure she didn’t know James before DWTS. So, she probably watched the show on occasion, but is now addicted.
I’m still getting Erin hate mail, but I love her. I think it was a good change. Brooke was totally predictable and scripted. Like Erin or not, she’s at least less predictable.
I completely agree John/Charlie (ok, what the HECK am I supposed to call you? lol). It’s almost impossible to put the horse back in the barn at this point in the season, but in subsequent seasons (if they continue allowing it) I think limiting the # of times you can use troupe dancers would be a good thing. I’m guessing since they’ve eliminated the Side by Side challenge and the Trios this year, TPTB wanted to make sure they got their money’s worth out of the troupe dancers AND keep the eliminated pros out in front of the viewing audience. I for one, end up focusing on watching the troupe members and losing the celeb in the mix. Happened in both salsas for me last night.
It’s funny, I feel like I’m too old to find James all that interesting or compelling. My musical tastes were formed in the 80s/90s on Hairbands, so the boy bands seem anemic to me, but I find Charlie absolutely delightful and could watch him and Sharna all day. Maybe it’s the story of the 17 years of hard work and dedication and climbing the ladder to the pinnacle of success in the sport, being favored to win a Gold medal and then ACTUALLY fulfilling all those expectations. I don’t know. But, having younger viewers coming to the show is always a good thing.
Seriously, what the heck do people think YOU can do about Erin? lol She’s always been slightly polarizing I believe. I’m not surprised that followed her to DWTS.
Call me what you like. Just keep calling;-)
I imagine they want to get their moneys worth with the troupe dancers. Plus, I think they likely see the Troupe Dancers as a feeder for the pros. So, they want to cultivate them for that as needed.
Angie, Good question, and one which has vexed me as well. So since we’re allowed to call him whatever we like, I’m gonna try out “John-Charlie” maybe JC for short.
Heidi, Courtney, or John — I’m over here in the private member area. Are any of you moderating right now?
In and out. Why?
Sorry, nothing important really.
I’ve just noticed that this weekend it’s taken a long time for comments to post. Been getting a lot of “waiting for Pure” messages and some timeouts. So I was just wondering if the problem’s on my end (although I haven’t noticed any delays elsewhere) or if Pure is really getting hammered. If it’s Pure taking a ton of hits, how are you ever going to keep it up Monday night?
It’s not just you. I’ve already alerted John. Thing is, the site is getting the kind of hits EVERY DAY that it normally only gets on Mondays – and Mondays are out of this world. I have no idea how we will keep up on Monday night. I’m hoping John can kick the server or something.
Thanks for the report. We’ve done some stuff to optimize the server, but hard to say what’s going to happen tomorrow. I’m trying a few things now. Hopefully they help.
That’s what I was afraid of. I wouldn’t mind so much if the majority of the people visiting were interested in intelligent discussion. A few of the new folks are, and I hope they stick around. But for the most part your little principality (our little playground) is getting overrun by Ghenghis Khan and his Mongol Hordes. I was going to check in Monday night to see how things were going since I refuse to watch live this week; but I might do you a favor by staying away! I’ll catch you Monday during the day; if not, good luck and have a six-pack of something good and strong handy to get you through Monday night!
The good part about the PDWTS Insider area.
True, John. There might be more of us here tomorrow night than usual. That’s assuming the hordes don’t surround the castle and keep us from getting in. Good luck with your tweaks.
It’s really great that the site is getting all those hits but there’s always a cost. Growing pains for websites can be painful when trying to gauge the needs/demands that will be placed on the servers.
I’m a freaking bundle of nerves for tonight and even though watching live means I can’t sit still and will be pacing for most of the show, I can’t make myself wait (I HAVE TO KNOW NOW NOW NOW. I’ve never been a big fan of delayed gratification, in case you couldn’t tell.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the Pure servers don’t throw their hands up in the air and shout “We Quit!) half way through tonight’s show AND I’ll try to be a good little member and not put extra strain by the constant refreshing.
See you all in less than 12 hours.
