I am impressed with Val in this interview, he is definitely “growing”…. And right now at least, he “gets” what the show is about.
Me too. I started really paying attention to him after he choreographed that great dance for Meryl and also watching him really get into the group dances the Macy’s dances and I think that he is letting himself have fun with dances out of his box and his talent grows with that
So nice that Val gets to be seen separate from Maks’ negative energy, immaturity at times and his negative (some) fans. It’s night and day sometimes.
How nice, mature and insightful for Val to bring it around back to the celebrity and their journey and be honest about how he views criticism.
I’m glad Maks isn’t on the same show with him because when Maks screws up, Val sometimes gets thrown in the mix and blamed for Maks’ poor judgment.
Not as sanguine as the rest of you folks. Before talking about the celebrity and their journey, he first spoke about how nice it would be to have back-to-back wins with his brother. I agree he (eventually) says all the right things and I would like nothing more than to find out that the words are actually true for him. But I’m not convinced.
This seems to be a “new” Val! Time will tell, of course – but like what I’m seeing here. Wonder how much his “tone” has to do with knowing who his partner is?
Am so excited for the reveal next week.
I think the sequence of his responses was driven by the interviewer’s questions. I think he came across as mature and thoughtful. I’m inclined to think that it’s when he’s around Maks that he somehow feels he needs to take a cue from his big brother ? getting pulled into all that negative vibe that so often surrounds Maks.
Yes, but who wouldn’t want to win? It would be disingenuous to say otherwise and at least he was answering the questions asked in the order they were asked. Of course he loves his brother, he should. Sometimes I think he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place because he’s also his own person and doesn’t always agree with what Maks does.
I remember very distinctly the Afterbuzz interview with the two of them after Maks abused Melissa Gilbert. This was back when the interviews were in that bar and it was noisy as heck and there were different interviewers then. Val clearly looked angry, but holding it in, at Maks’ abusive behavior towards women and handled it the best way he could, trying to support his brother the best he could but clearly not condoning the behavior. A very telling segment.
I agree with you #Susan he is to worried about winning that mirror ball. I lost all respect for Val during the Kellie/Derek, Val/Zendaya season and the immaturity Val and Zendaya had after losing and wouldn’t even give interviews after their loss and the looks that they gave Derek and Kellie at GMA the next day really turned me off and to me showed Val’s immaturity and lack of sportsmanship.
Val definately seems very happy and excited this season. I did like how he switched the interviewer’s topic from judges to being all about the celebrate partners and their journey and making in a memorable one. He said he will miss Maks, but I think he is more himself when they aren’t on the show together. Granted, Val attitude along with Zendays’s was so ugly 2 seasons back in S16 that he will have to show he changed.
Ditto Carrie #7. Did NOT like how he acted after the S16 finale when Tom announced Kellie & Derek had won. I’m pretty sure he thought they had it in the BAG and as it turns out, they did NOT! Some people (I’m looking at YOU Zendaya and your father) are STILL not over that loss. So no, I don’t think he’s gotten it just yet. It’ll be interesting to see whom they paired him up with this season. Hopefully not another ringer as he’s had 4 in a row now…Kelly, Zendaya, Elizabeth and Danica. All of whom had considerable dance experience in some way, shape or form.
Give him somebody that’s a challenge, who CANNOT dance or who’s never danced before like oh Maria Menounos or Kellie Pickler or shock..Amy Purdy or maybe even someone who’s overweight a la Ricki Lake or Amber Riley and we’ll see just how good of a teacher he is. I don’t doubt his choreography skills as I think he’s FAR better than his big bro in that dept.
Lets just hope TPTB don’t turn S19 into the “Let’s Get Val a Trophy” Season.
# Kelly — AMEN.
Val very obviously tries to fake sincerity and “what it supposed to all be about”. He doesn’t ever seem very sincere to me. It’s like he knows what he supposed to say, but can’t help himself in being a douche bag.
Will there ever be an interview with Val where Maks’ name isn’t mentioned at least once? The world may never know….
Val retweeting him and Zendaya losing shows how sincere he is. He is just less dramatic than his brother.
I find KB at afterbuzz overestimates Val’s teaching skills because of one season with Kelly who took dance lessons after dwts. She said so herself. But Amber dancing well in week 1 or Kellie just means Derek got another good one. Ever consider just maybe Derek is a good teacher too? Not just a great choreographer. See Brooke who won and no dance lessons. Seems like Val has had the great run of partners yet no one says anything. On paper even Mark has had better partners than Derek. Derek just got better results.
Interesting how we can all look at the same thing and interpret it differently. Val’s shown poor sportsmanship in the past, but he’s had over a year to get over not being able to seal the deal with Zendaya. I know Zen may be butthurt with her pride being crushed and all, but is Val even passive aggressive about losing to Kellie & Derek these days? His perspective could have changed since then. And based on just this interview, his head is in the right place. I say good for him. He’s always come across as the more focused, more “together” of the two C-brothers anyway, so I wouldn’t be surprised things have clicked for him.
Val is not Maks, neither in terms of choreographic ability nor in temperament, so it tends to be uncomfortable for me to see them get lumped together whenever Maks does/says something foolish. I mean of course he’s going to be loyal to his brother. I don’t follow him outside of what we see on DWTS but I wouldn’t say he condones Maks’ behavior either. Didn’t he just recently call Maks out for wasting time in his routines at some BWAT show?
As a side note, I don’t see why the media make out Maks leaving as a such a huge loss. He was gone for 2 consecutive seasons and the show survived without him.
I’m always vacillating between the C bros–Maks can really be charming and funny; Val is a better dancer and choreographer. I hope that Val has truly matured and find a way to get out of his bro’s shadow. Or maybe, Princess Heidi #11, he’s following somebody’s advice to “fake it till he becomes it.” 😉
If Val gets yet another ringer, people will start to notice if I have to remind them everyday myself. 🙂
I think Derek’s teaching skills are not mentioned as often because it’s so secondary to his amazing choreography. And let’s face it – celebs can’t do amazing choreo if he’s not great at teaching it to them.
IMO, Val is untested as a teacher. He’s had ringers since his second season which has lightened his burden tremendously. Give him a Joanna or a Jennie…hell, give him someone who isn’t tiny and cute. All the complaints people have (erroneously) had about Derek can now be legitimately leveled against Val. Yet ppl still complain about Derek and that’s because he can teach anybody to dance and get them to the end.
I think there is more to people thinking Val is a great teacher than watching him dance well with capable partners, to me how much people who know him and work with him laud his teaching abilities hold more weight.
Of course all of his partners have raved about him, but not just them, other pros, dancers, and contestants have also. I remember an interview with Candace cameron bure after the season, where they asked her who she would have wanted for a switch partner had she been allowed to chose herself, and she said Val. She said she wanted him because of how amazing of a teacher he was. She loved how he taught Danica, how dedicated he was, how at every opportunity he was sharing knowledge with her, no matter if the cameras were on or not.
I can’t take Val seriously after his showmance with Kelly. Also, I can’t forgive him for letting Zendaya do her final interview, after losing, alone. His personality is so inconsistent that I can’t tell when he’s being genuine and when he isn’t.
Thats my issue with val his personality is interchangeable lime the weather and you never know when that high pressure will cause a thunderstorm. However a pro / am couple said that they had been working with val and he was excellent very dedicated and missed nothing in his teaching.
