PureDWTS Season 19 Mini-Spoiler O’ the Day – Sept. 7
Trying not to start this post out on a sour note (especially since it’s NFL Sunday and that makes me happy!), but a bit of a PSA given some of the tones of the comments I’ve been seeing in the past week or so: try not to be a Debbie Downer, mmmmkay? We realize that not everyone is as thrilled with the show as we are, and that’s ok – but if you see that everyone here is excitedly discussing this season’s cast and who their favorite is, do you really need to (or feel it’s appropriate to) butt in and throw something out like “Psssh, this season’s cast is lame and I’m not watching!” It’s kind of like being at a party and walking up to a group of people talking about their favorite Michael Jackson song, and saying (without being solicited to do so) that “Michael Jackson sucks.” It’s a buzzkill. Don’t be a buzzkill, k? It’s not about suppressing your opinions – it’s about finding the right way (and time, and place) to express them. CBS cares 🙂
Now that we’ve got that business out of the way, on with the spoilers!!!
So we already know that the dreaded Twitter vote (and the dreaded partner switch) are back in play this season. What other cockamamie ideas might we see again? Sounds like the dance-offs and the “picking dances for other couples” are potentially back on the table as well, along with something called the “live save” (???) and “audience judging”. Given that these are still in the conceptual phase and not many details are known, we don’t know exactly what these will entail – but if we had to guess, the “live save” might be either a judges’ save or a Twitter vote to save one of the couples in the bottom 2; as for the “audience judging”, my only guess is that the couples might be getting a 5th score courtesy of Twitter voting or something like that. Again, don’t know any details – and remember, these ideas might not actually come to fruition. We know that all too well from trying to keep up with all of the plans that changed behind-the-scenes during the all-star season. 😯 Discuss…
Right after you asked people not to be a buzzkill, you kind of ripped the producers ideas to keep the show fresh (“the dreaded…”). Outside of maybe Tony Dovolani I think everyone involved on the production side and almost unanimous on the viewers side thought the Switch Up was a great idea and proved incredibly successful at a) making the show must see again in week 4 b) gave the show a much needed fresh coat of paint. Even if every idea doesn’t work, kudos to the powers that be for trying to keep an almost 10 year old show fresh. Last season there was a week where it trailed the much younger The Voice by only .4 one week in the demo – that’s an incredible accomplishment. If they are trying new ideas with the voting, good for them. It’s all better than remaining stagnant and having a season with no new hooks. The crux of the show never changes but they should always be looking for ways to keep the show fresh. If this was the exact same show as the one that premiered in June 05, it would still be on the air.
It Would NOT still be on the air, is what that should have read.
DancingFan, not sure who you think you are, coming in and throwing shade after never having posted here before. “Everyone thought the partner switch was a great idea”? Are you from some sort of alternate universe????? Everyone HERE thought it was a terrible idea, and quite frankly, the people here are the only ones I care about. I don’t feel the need to justify anything to you, and if you find me to be a “buzzkill” by reiterating the same opinions that we all shared here in previous seasons, you’re free to leave – in fact, please do. I can tell you aren’t really going to be in good company.
So much for no cranky, whiny, ungrateful little asshats today…
Whatever chaos they decide to throw our way, I just hope they give specific, detailed instructions about how/what to tweet so the tweets will “count.” Maybe they should post instructions on the website with examples of how it’s supposed to look.
Do love these minis … thanks.
I hated the switch up. I thought it was mean to do, and that it wasn’t thought through very well, but they went ahead and did it anyway, and it was kind of like throwing wet noodles against the wall to see what sticks, and that’s what they did. I dreaded everything about the switch up, and completely expected the worst, and was just happy that it turned out better than I had thought.
Was there some good things about switch up week? Yes. But don’t ask me to name any, because I tried to add them in this, and came up completely blank. 🙂
Don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya, DancingFan.
Not to mention that the people they switched weren’t reflected by the actual votes AT ALL.
Do this person also forget that someone not going to mention names wined through through the whole rehearsal that he wanted back to his partner I for one didnt care for it. Courtney you keep on what you are doing. You Vogue and Heidi and the rest of this team do a great job. I for one thank you guys for what you do.
I just hope the trio dances are back. Really missed it last season.
LOL…also, DancingFan, if you are TOO MUCH of an asshat (like you just were) I can just delete you. Keep it up and you won’t ever post here again….oh wait, you just did a “goodbye cruel world” post claiming you wouldn’t be back. Yeah. We’ll see.
I missed the trio dances also but was not a fan of the switch up. It was interesting to see how well some of the switched partners did, Meryl an NeNe stand out for me. It looks like a fun cast. Love all the info you ladies get.
Bless your soul Courtney. Sucks that you and the mods have been having to deal with so many asshats lately. I know how annoying and overwhelming that is.
Anyways, going to this post, I don’t really know what to think of that audience judging.. thing. I won’t worry about it too much now though. I do like the whole “celebs picking for each other” thing though. I’ve always liked that for some reason. Thanks for the spoilers yet again!
Also I saw that Bethany and Derek have the Jive on Week 1. That’s interesting. Is a Jive harder to dance on Week 1 as opposed to the a ChaCha? Hmmm…
Whatever audience judging is, it already sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
Which could also mean that Janel and Val are still working on their week 1 dance since they were talking Jive also. That’s f@#king crazy.
I hate twitter voting. I don’t think it’s fair or even respectful to the dedicated DWTS fans and viewers that do not have access to twitter. My favorite could be voted off that week and I didn’t get my fair chance to weigh in on that decision.
It’s entirely possible. Jive has always been a week 2 dance, but who knows anymore…
I’m not really into this dance-off or partner switch again. I absolutely hated when they did that in season 14, to have a dance-off and the judges pick who should leave. If that were the case, people like Bill E. (who we love!) wouldn’t have made it to finals.
I love the idea that DWTS of the side-by-side or the trio dances but anything else, I wasn’t a fan of. I hope they keep this season simple and more about the dancing with theme weeks (can we do disney again??) rather than anything else.
The live save, dance-off and who knows what else. I will admit I like that I don’t know what the heck is going to happen this season because it’s really boring predicting what tptb normally do. So I’m game unless it all goes awry.
Dang, I don’t like any of these ideas coming back! If the switch is back (it appears to be back, right?) I won’t be yoo upset about that, but I hope they don’t bring back those crazy dances from the all-star season . What I WOULD like to see back are the trio dances and the side-by-side challenge; Gives us a chance to see former pros that are fan favorites back, like Anna, Chelsie and even Maks… Don’t like the dance-offs either. And with the twitter save, it becomes too much like The Voice for me… But I understand they are trying to incorporate social media more on the show.
Let me ask you something: do you think the majority of viewers vote via internet or telephone?
I wasn’t wild about the switch up either. I wish or hope they bring back the Marathon dances. My fave was the Mambo Marathon.
Aaand another idiot makes his assholery known – and this one has posted under four different names before. How sweet. Congrats on being the first block of the season.
I am not a fan of having Twitter influence the voting at all. It plays against the show’s demo IMO. I know that they are trying to attract younger viewers, but don’t alienate the old ones in the process.
I wasn’t a fan of the switch off either because the premise was that the fans would vote on it, but then the results didn’t seem to coincide.
😀
So the Live Screw…I mean Save… came from AGT, right? Since Rob is new I won’t go off on a “Well that’s a good way to get rid of a fan favorite right there!” Rant.
Question…..are we back to the show being on two days a week or is it still the one day? Because I am not a fan of “you’re in the bottom two but you get to dance now!”
The switch-up had promise, it was how it was executed that made it suck.
I like the Marathon dances too! They’re just so goofy, over the top and entertaining.
I have no problem with theme weeks, as long as they make sense and don’t push an inappropriate dance or song in order to fit the theme. By the way, I miss Classical Week big-time.
Wasn’t a fan of the switch-up.
I loved the Marathon dances too. I guess the live save is like the voice’s. I always thought those were lame. I did love the switch up though. I think that the cast was able to make it work. The audience judging could be cool. I liked the picking dances for other couples but am disappointed the dance offs could return. I’m sure we’ll see someone like Roshon who kept getting into the bottom two. I loved Roshon but it was obviously his time to go!
I think the switch up could’ve worked if it had been thought through a lot more and hadn’t been left up to twitter votes which they ignored anyways. And that got people very upset. And I don’t care that people are saying there isn’t any “big name” celebrity this year. I actually like that I don’t know most of them. Getting to know their stories will be something to look forward too each week. And the more I see and read about this seasons cast the more I like them. I also love the new pros. Getting great vibes so far for this season. to the producers, just let them dance and stop meddling so much.
I’m in the minority here, but I actually liked he IDEA of the switch up week – one week only, none of this BS with voters getting to decide if you stayed with your switched Pro or go back to your original partner. They didn’t execute worth squat, but I think it’s an idea worthy of a second look.
I hated that they threw the audience votes out the window. One of the gems of the switch up week was to address so many viewers’ strong opinion (mine included on more than one occasion) that TPTB had gotten the pairings all wrong. “So OK” TPTB might be saying “show us how you would have done it better!” It would have been more interesting to see the actual pairings that the audience voted for.
The mean girl in me was delighted that Val was able – in one week – to showcase Meryl’s natural talent to its best potential – something that Maks was not able to do all season.
I absolutely loved the Drew/Witney pairing. My respect for Witney as a teaching pro grew in that week. Not saying Cheryl was a bad partner to Drew, but Witney was able to get something extra out of him. It was a lovely week for them, as I remember.
I can see where some might think it’s mean spirited – chances are good that the assigned Pro is shown in a negative light because his celeb does better with the switched partner. I think that – in most cases – has more to do with the groundwork that the assigned pro has laid, the “experience” that each celeb has under their belt. But still, done with the right tone I think this switch up week could be loads of fun and add another intriguing layer to the journey…. If done correctly, that is.
I think the one positive from the switch up was that Witney was able to demonstrate her teaching skills with Drew. Possibly that solidified her position as a pro.
If the switch-up had been done fairly I think I might have liked it, but they couldn’t allow a certain pro to get what he deserved so much for that. Perhaps the mods can do a summary of how to set up a twitter account for those who don’t know how to use it. I don’t mind twitter, it is not my favorite media form, but I managed to put my DWTS stuff in ONE column on tweet deck which made it easier to see what is happening on DWTS. I often tell people, wait this might make me sound bad, okay clients (in an only positive manner), that you have to learn to out-manipulate the manipulators. So, we will have to learn how to out-manipulate the manipulative TPTB. We can do it. So if they want to use twitter, we will have to step up to the plate, and even ask our children if need be, or our neighbor’s kids, nieces and nephews etc. how to power tweet. Soldier up folks, we are going to war to protect our beloved DWTS no matter where they try to take it. lol.
I’ve always hated the live save on reality competition shows. If the audience didn’t vote for someone then why save them? If it’s up to audience then let them make the decision. With DWTS especially if it’s put into the hands of the judges then that just means a monstrous amount of manipulation to me, even more so than normal. I imagine they would especially want it in their back pocket if someone like Janel by chance goes down that Christina Milian route and they want to ensure she sticks around.
That’s what they want you to do, Lynne. They aren’t doing the tweeting just for fun – they get a benefit from it, possibly even ad revenue.
abc should pay you gals and John something because even people who trash this site come here to get info and discuss it elsewhere, they want preseason buzz, much of it’s created and/or collected (so people know where to find it) here, they need to thank you guys
@jess- Lol, thanks – trust me, there have been times where I’ve been half-tempted to call certain individuals on Twitter, Facebook, tumblr, other sites, etc. for poaching our info and then trying to pass it off as their own, or talking sh*t about us in one breath while repeating info we’ve posted in other. Would love it if it were as simple as saying “Chill or cut the check.” But as I like to tell Heidi – it’s kind of fun being the Chick-Fil-A of DWTS websites 😛 You may hate us and our policies and try to boycott us – but the sandwiches are just too damn good to stay away. And really, it’s not us who looks foolish when all’s said and done – we’re just doing our thing; the haters are the ones coming to us, obsessing over what we’ve said, and then running their mouth elsewhere.
And thank you everyone who does appreciate the spoilers and has stuck with us over the years, commenting courteously, and adding to the lively discussions around here. I don’t thank you guys enough, and lately I’ve been too irritated by the few trolls lurking that I’ve kind of missed the fact that for every troll we get, we’ve got at least 10 dedicated fans. I am blessed…let love rule 🙂
I think this season just like all the other has a possibility to be great. I’m not gonna lie I like the switch-up for certain people and it was neat seeing was new pairs would look like. I really hope they bring back the side-by-side they had last season where two pairs would dance together I really liked Candace and Charlie’s Contemporary. I would like to see maybe a few new theme nights as well really liked the Disney week very good idea can’t believe it took them 18 season to do it.
I wonder if the live voting could be like on The Voice where they announce the bottom and then you have the commercial break so twitter vote on who should come back which might help some of the loveable character like a Bill E. (even though he made the finals) make it further in the competition.
Just a question I know they said that during the Pro reveal that there will be guest judges will they be every week like last season or more spread out like season 17. Also has there been any talk of who some of the guests might be.
As soon as I saw AGT do the live voting to save one of the 5/6/7 place contestants, I thought of DWTS copying it. I could see them telling us the real bottom 3, with the viewers saving one and the judges saving one like AGT. The good thing is DWTS would have to tell us the real bottom three. One bad part would be the west coast viewers being treated rather poorly, making them find out who the people in danger are before the show airs in their time zone.
I would definitely not be supportive of a “judge’s save” type of situation. They already get to have a hand in the outcome via their scores. That’s enough power for them, in my opinion.
That said, I don’t really want to see an audience or viewer save, either. I don’t like the concept of a “save” on any reality show. Everyone has their opportunity to get their votes in and the results should stand as they are, I think.
I guess I’m in the minority, but I did like the switch up. I just thought it was interesting to see the contestants with different partners and I thought it was fun to see the surprise of who everyone was paired with.
I would rather see a dance marathon than a switch-up though. I think the dance marathons are fun and really show who has the most stamina and creativity.
I do applaud TPTB for trying to think of some new ideas for the show, though. I think it demonstrates that they are at least attempting to keep people interested.
Personally, I didn’t hate the switch-up week – yes, I was annoyed that the producers threw out the votes, but it honestly could have gone SO much worse. One thing that keeps me optimistic this time around is that Rob Wade and the new TPTB seem to be surprising us already. He switched up the partners in a good way, and look how happy we are with the cast! I respect how he may want to change the show up a little, and considering how well he did with the cast, I think we should all wait and see clearly what happens. As we saw in All-Star season, not all of these ideas come to fruition!
In regards to the jive, this might also have something to do with TPTB. If there really are couples working on jive, it might be because (and this is a bit of a radical statement, I know) Rob Wade doesn’t have a great conception of the difficulties that various ballroom dances pose. He might have just thought, OH! Jive is fun and energetic, and having an energetic dance the first week is a good thing. That, or there were jives given out because TPTB thought having more time to learn the dance would benefit its quality.
I agree with Jess…even though I don’t comment often I love reading all the comments. You all do a fantastic job
Word to Courtney. 🙂
The only reason I liked the switch up was for the karma that came and bit certain fans in the ass. No, the voting wasn’t legit, but it was GREAT to see Derek succeed with NeNe, and Val choreograph for Meryl something that Maks could never come close to touching.
Careful what you wish for, babies. 🙂
Rob Wade spent many seasons on this show – he should be as knowledgeable on the dances as Conrad is/was.
I love Classical Week and I hope to see more Paso Doble!!!!
First up, THANK YOU to the mods for what you do! DWTS is more fun to watch when I’m reading this site. Period. 😀
Secondly, I agree with Linde – Drew and Whitney was a positive out of the switch-up. I thought Whitney did a great job with Drew that week, and at least to me, his dancing improved. Another switch-up couple I liked was Sharna and Cody. I loved how she told him to pull his damn pants up… 🙂 Other than that, it was pretty much crap, though.
I’m not fond of the twitter voting, but I get it – that stuff is yet another play for “the young-uns”, trying to drive ratings up in the demo. Us old farts don’t have twitter (oh, wait… *I HAVE TWITTER*!!!!) 😉
I love these daily spoilers…. so THANK YOU Courtney for this new fun daily post! I didn’t like the switch-up last season because it was so obviously FIXED. I wasted a lot of time voting on twitter for it and it didn’t matter in the end, so i’d rather not have those types of things or use twitter for voting. If the producers want to do things, then just go ahead and do them and stop wasting my time and effort on twitter if they already decided how most people should be paired up.
I’m just gonna vote for beth and derek like i normally do and leave all that twitter voting stuff to others. I do like new creative ideas/themes because Derek usually excels in these challenges, but i don’t like the shenanigans by TPTB when they have agendas to push.
Thanks to all of you mods for the great little tidbits and all the knowledge info you give us. I loved the switch up week and looked at it like Derek did with fun and entertainment and I think a lot of the celebs really learned a lot from their new pro. It really helped them grow. Of course there is always a bad apple in the bunch and took the celebs joy away. I personally loved the side by side challenge and enjoy when the celebs get to add third pros to dance with, again it helps them grow and enjoy their journey. As far as all the other twitter voting and saves; I guess we will just have to wait and see and conform!! Love the cast and come on season 19.
Yay, another spoiler! Thanks, Courtney! I always look forward to this.
I didn’t like how the switch-up was handled last season. So, if tptb is bringing it back, I hope they’ve figured out how to go about it without screwing up. The switch-up became a success because of the pros & the celebs who did their best to offer their audience something good, I think. Like many who have mentioned, I also prefer that the show brings back the side-by-side with a pair of pro dancers (season 16), the trio, and Disney theme week. The marathon would be fun, too.
As for the buzzkills, please don’t ruin our party here. Thank you to the mods who work hard to keep this site not just enjoyable but informative and enlightening about dance as well.
Thank you Courtney for the daily spoilers, I love them. Also, thanks to all the mods for the great job on this site and PDH.
I would have enjoyed the Switch Up last season if it had been thought out better and the votes counted properly.
I really enjoy the trio dances and the side by side.
I personally don’t like the audience/judge/viewer save-whatever they decide to call it.
I’m looking forward to this season and as always looking forward to all the comments on this site. Let’s get this season started.
When I read any provoking troll’s comments all I can think of is what Sgt. Hulka in Stripes said to a bat***t crazy mean recruit, “Lighten up Francis”.
I think it would be cool to have a mash up of Classical and Rock night. This weekend I was at an event where an orchestra played versions of Purple Haze and The Stones’ Gimme Shelter. It was FREAKING AWESOME!
I did like Disney Week. Latin week however was a bit of dud for me last season. Too many horrible songs and costumes. Instead of Latin how about Dance Around The World night? You could do a Reggae Salsa, a French Waltz(La Vie En Rose), a Roma Paso.
I watch Ricardo and Yulia’s dance to Move, a Middle Eastern influenced, heavily percussive track all the time. The Rumba section to a sensual, slow beat is incredible.
I guess what I’d like to say to Rob Wade is to think outside of the box, while still staying in the box, if that makes sense.
Love all the mini spoilers. Thanks all. As for changes, it can go either way but putting too much seasoning in one bowl of soup is not a good idea. Hopefully Rob Wade knows what he’s doing or it’s going to be chaos in the end. I personally love the theme dance. Can we get disney week again?
@Susan2, GREAT ideas!
I think a Classical/Rock night would be a really fun thing! There is a group that does these type of covers, but I don’t remember the name of the group! One of the teachers at my girls dance studio has used more than one of their songs over the years. Picture a ballet to a hard rock song done with an orchestral arrangement. Of course, it would be good for the show to pay for a FULL ORCHESTRA that night, and allow the pros to work with them to create an arrangement for the songs that actually manage to FIT the dance styles.
And I like your Dance Around the World Night. Maybe something they could do for it, is the old (and I know the results can be fixed) draw out of a hat… Pro drawing for dance style, celeb partner drawing for country/region.
Oh, and Rob Wade needs to think SMARTER, not necessarily wilder. I do think that many of the ideas they’ve tried over the years could work, if they actually took the time and more fully developed them. We can tell when they have no idea what they’re doing, when they announce something with no details. Yes, it’s good to have ideas and to continually trying to keep things fresh and evolving…. Just PLAN THEM THROUGH! before you try them.
This live save seems very good for some (Jannel) but reminds me of the oddness of the twitter vote when zendaya was there. I hope it’s not like the way AGT does it.
Thank Lori!
I do take comfort in the fact that the new show-runner has actually been involved with the show for some time.
I’d really be worried if a total newbie came in and decided to re-invent the DWTS wheel.
[…] days until the premiere Thanks to everyone who took the time to leave such kind, sweet words on yesterday’s mini spoiler post – you guys are the lifeblood of this site, and the reason I do what I […]
I have a feeling that the live save will just be a way to save Janel and Val if they are ever in danger. The producers love rigging it for the C-bros.
Kinda wish they would bring back acoustic night again. Just without that damn elevated circle, lol, just seemed a lot more stressful for the couples who had participated inseason 11. 🙂
I liked the switching pair idea and like PH said, without it we won’t have seen what Meryl was really able to do and the only dance of NeNe I still remember.
I hope they do Broadway night. I forgot what season they did that on but I remember loving it.
