Private Members Area – DWTS Season 19 Jam Week Discussion
Tonight was week two of Dancing with the Stars Season 19. If you’re not a Pure DWTS Insider yet, you can do so here. If you are, then I look forward to the discussion in the comments.
What did you think of tonight’s show? Did you like the theme? I heard some complaints about the music still not being as good this season as a couple seasons ago (a call for Harold Wheeler it seems). Thoughts? Anyway, I’m traveling tonight, so I’ll keep it short and look forward to your comments.
Tonight’s show left me with mixed emotions, some good and some not so good.
I didn’t like the theme for tonight’s show. And some of the dances didn’t seem to match the style of music.
I am not so sure that the 4 judges format is working. CAI seems to be off her rocker (or her chair!!) most of the time, not sure if it’s because Julianne has joined the panel or what.
Bethany and Derek danced a beautiful foxtrot, but as one poster mentioned, something seems missing with Bethany, I’m not sure what it is. Maybe by week 3 I will feel more of a connection.
Alfonso and Witney, I loved their dance, sure it may not have been full of Samba, but I loved it. That boy can move!
And although Antonio and Cheryl make a beautiful couple.. that’s about it.
I love Tommy and Peta. Who says that smoking weed all of your life, slows you down. Never!! What a gem!
Artem is creepy.
I am hoping for the surprise elimination of Team Vajanel. (wishful thinking) But I think that Michael, Tavis, and Betsey will be the bottom 3. With the outside chance of Randy or Johnathan.
What a great night. I loved the opening number and all the music. Derek and Bethany blew me away the most.
And LOL to Artem being “creepy”, Sandy. I get an eek feeling too.
As for the elimination: I think it will be between Tavis and Michael with Tavis leaving. His heart isn’t in it and he’s not putting the show as a priority as the others are, so, will fans not vote for him too? Sad, I feel sorry for Sharna as she is trying so hard.
I agree Sandy that I had mixed emotions about the night. It’s like everyone went from having the perfect dance for their skill-set and personality week 1 to having the complete opposite in week 2 (plus odd song selections). I guess week 2 is supposed to be harder though when reality sets in.
I really like Lea and Artem so I enjoyed their Jive but didn’t see it as the best of the night. Also though Janel and Val were over scored with two 9s, should have been straight 8s. I do think Alfonso needs to be careful with some of his comments though. I just worry he may start to veer into Corbin or Gilles territory (though no one can be as bad as Gilles).
Betsey and Tommy were the highlights for me though! They are the best “older” celebs the show has had IMO. I would love to see them both make it through this week. Tommy makes Peta so likable!
Agree with Vogue that it will be between Tavis and Michael with Tavis leaving. He just hasn’t done enough to endear himself with the audience and it’s clear he just doesn’t have the time.
I’m also feeling mixed emotions after this week. I like the theme “My Jam” in theory, but I don’t think it worked out as well as they would have hoped. I would have liked to see more of a connection between the celebrity and song. However, they can’t really do that if their songs aren’t actually their jam.
I’m hoping that tonight’s results show is a good one to get a bit more good dancing and behind the scenes in. I also hope they show the Derek/Emma/Michael scene that Courtney and PH mentioned because I’m dying to know what that is about! Julianne and Derek dancing together always makes me happy though.
Sandy…Totally agree with the Artem being creepy comment! The way he just stares at Lea totally freaks me out. And I didn’t like his comment “WE don’t need to get it. YOU need to get it, because I already get it.”
Oh and my friend and I watch the show together every week. We like to play a game called “How drunk is CAI?” It’s really not much of a game but just analyzing how much booze we think she has drank during commercials (I mean…we drink too, but we’re not talking on national tv). Last night she was pretty high up there. Me thinks the Julianne jealousy actually kicked in this week.
Some early spoilers for our faves 🙂
From what we’ve heard so far, here’s some of the movies that we’ll see music from next week:
Ghost
Rocky III
The Great Gatsby
West Side Story
Sister Act (not positive on this one – we have the song, trying to find the movie it came from)
There’s at least 1 paso doble and one contemporary, per DT.
I laughed so hard at “Stocky” and cringed/laughed at the Ghost parody.
I love the theme weeks when the music fits the dance type, so hopefully this is one of those weeks and no one gets hosed with weird song/dance combos. Looking forward to this though!
More movies we MIGHT see next week…
Rock of Ages
Scent of a Woman (confirmed to be Tommy & Peta’s)
Robin Hood
And we angels need your help – does anyone know what movie “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” is from? All I can find is Sister Act 2 and Remember the Titans, but neither of those seem like very memorable fodder for movie week. We welcome your insights, loyal, intelligent readers 🙂
I’m kind of a movie music buff and I’m actually toying with writing a book on soundtracks – so hopefully I can help out!
I’m pretty sure that song was in Stepmom and Bridget Jones, too. I wonder which film it would be – maybe they’ll eliminate the “2” from Sister Act and just say it’s from there?
But if we are talking memorable fodder – then surely Rock of Ages does NOT qualify except that Julianne was in it, haha.
Seriously though – if they are doing “Everything I Do” I may have to mute the television. That and Aerosmiths’s “I Dont Want to Miss a Thing” are not only my two least-favorite movie songs, but music in general.
Somehow I knew you’d be an asset in this situation, Fig 🙂
Apparently Mark said he & Sadie have a song from a Disney movie and that it’s “cute” – isn’t Remember the Titans Disney? But they also said they have Viennese waltz, and I’m not sure there’s any way to chop-and-screw “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” into a Viennese waltz. Gahhh…this is giving me a headache…
…I don’t see them resisting the urge to use a song from a movie Julianne was in 😛 Especially since the song they’re using has been used before…actually within the last few seasons.
I bet you they stick Antonio with “Everything I Do”. They seem dead set on selling him as this romantic leading man.
I thought of Sister Act for that song. In fact, whenever I hear that song I think of Sister Act.
Nevermind the Disney theory – Heidi just told me Sadie & Mark’s song is from Up. Tad obscure, if you ask me.
And someone else just mentioned via email that “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” was also revived in Guardians of the Galaxy. Hmmmm.
Oh yeah, it definitely was in GotG – and now that I think about it, they may try to capitalize on the film’s popularity. And yeah Remember the Titans was a Disney film, but interesting that they went with Up considering that it’s not typically associated with its music.
Update on how the week 3 dances are going…
*Massive clusterf*ckery involving Janel & Val’s West Side Story jazz…see Heidi’s “Who’s Dancing What?” post for more details. A tidbit I left off of that one: Val is apparently not rolling with the punches of it very well – the routine is not very cohesive at the moment, though I can’t say I really blame him.
*Sadie’s Viennese waltz is “looking good” – very graceful 🙂
*Betsey’s routine is also looking very pretty – lots of good lifts, and with Betsey’s flexibility, it’s coming together nicely.
*Tommy is actually handling the Argentine tango REALLY well – the guy has a lot of natural finesse. The only potential hurdle? He keeps forgetting his choreography…although I think we all kind of expected that. 😉
*Alfonso’s quickstep is looking good, though just simply by virtue of being a quickstep, it may not be quite as exciting as some of the other routines. But the beginning is “fun & funky” and they’re definitely embracing the Austin Powers theme…so don’t be surprised if you see Alfonso in a loud gold suit 😉
*Got some intel on Bethany & Derek’s “Singin’ in the Rain” jazz – which Heidi is posting to PureDerekHough later, so keep an eye out 😉
Have a great weekend, lovelies! 😀
Thanks for the updates Courtney! I wonder if they’ll mention CAI’s role in Austin Powers – I think it’s too much fun to ignore!
I’m really glad that some of the more entertaining routines are coming from Betsey and Tommy – they both have such outgoing personalities and they seem to be having a blast. For me, I like my cast to be entertaining in multiple ways – good dancers, funny, uplifting, etc. These two have the added benefit of being surprisingly limber for their age, in addition to the fun they provide.
I LOVE these updates! Thank you so much for sharing.
Kudos to Tommy and Betsey, they are having the time of their lives.
Thank goodness Witney and Alfonso have some fun and funky incorporated into their quickstep. (Loud gold suit!!) In my opinion, Quicksteps can tend to be too repetitive and a little boring.
