DWTS Season 19 Week 2 RESULTS!! Let’s discuss tonight’s show! (Spoilers)
Getting excited for the pro dances tonight!! Derek and Jules with the other male pros – sounds like they might be doing something from their tour? Maybe?
Once again, comment to your hearts contents, as long as you remember the show night rules.
- Our server gets totally hosed when people sit at their computer and click “refresh” constantly. Post a comment, then walk away for five minutes so that others have a chance…and so that Courtney and I can actually post on the site. 🙂
- THIS SITE IS NOT TWITTER. Do not post like you are on twitter. You get one warning and then I put you in time out. 🙂 We need context and content. Believe it or not there are a lot of people who don’t watch the east coast feed of the show, so they don’t know what the hell you’re talking about when you post a comment that says, “Boy, that sucked.” If you want to say “____ and ____’s dance was not good at all, crappy choreo” that’s fine. That would be context. It is good. 😀 Remember, if you post five one liners in five minutes, you’ve broken rule number 1. 😉
If you want to see my predictions of who is going home, along with Courtney’s predictions, click the links. Vogue is in there too, in the comments. I think, once again, all three of us are in agreement. We’ll see.
Well, Val, you better hope Julianne doesn’t hold a grudge. 🙂
I am SO OVER the all female strip tea…I mean, dance numbers. Come on. Where are the MEN???
Seriously, the Encore is between Janel and Lea? Gee, I wonder why not Beth? 😀
ABCs of DWTS??? Awesome….except for the letter “R”. Gag.
Sadie in jeopardy?? Give me a break. Hosed twice in one week.
Holy F@#K Allison is a beast. She is So EMOTIVE that she’s actually scary. Damn. I can see why Derek has called her his muse.
Sorry, but I’m loving these little video bits. 🙂
I feel cheated by the Julianne dance….the dance that was advertised as a Julianne AND Derek dance, with the other male pros. Yeah, since Val nearly dropped her a second time, he can sit out.
SPOILER ALERT
Not necessarily the bottom two are Michael and Tavis – Sadie was the third standing but was called safe.
And Tavis was eliminated.
As predicted by Me, Courtney and Vogue. 🙂
SPOILER ALERT for Next Week…
Someone is dancing to “Unchained Melody” (Ghost), someone else to “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky. Also, “Back to Black” from the Great Gatsby.
Is anyone else cringing to see how badly Val dropped Julianne in rehearsal!?!?! YIKES!!! Surprised there was no concussion…but she is a tough gal…LORDY that scared me!!!!
Betsey is so darn happy! I love it.
Uh oh, that darn twitter vote again. Just let the judges pick the darn encore. BOO!
Idk whose reaction I liked more betsey or randy. Randy looked thrilled. Betsey seemed pretty calm but in a “I am probably in the bottom again” kind of way. When thryvsaid she was safe I even got excited.
Oh and This Twitter vote is crazy. I can tel u who will get thAt right away.
Ugh. Janel and Val under R for romance. Blech. And they’ll probably win the twitter vote – meh. I guess anything to pimp them.
Do TPTB really think the encore dance via twitter vote has any suspense? Please. I’ll be shocked if it isn’t Janel.
Loved the ABC’s of DWTS except for R. Ick. Probably wouldn’t have minded it so much if it wasn’t Val and Janel. TPTB should just give it up.
This twitter vote is silly. Just pick them to start with. Janel and Val have an absolutely much bigger fan base on twitter than Lea and Artem. This is a non-contest. I agree, the ABC’s was very cute except that R, gag me!!!
Yep, Princess H! Everything was going fine with the ABC till R came around. SMH
Really enjoying the “refreshed” results show…love seeing more Pro dances (although the girl dancers seem to be “one trick ponies” right now)…the special segments (last week getting to know the new pro’s and this week the ABC’s) – these are just FUN to watch! And the snippets of conversation as they review how the couples dances went are always a favorite for me.
And, I feel like they are even doing better with announcing the results. And on top of it all, I feel like Erin is finding her spot…much better than last year for sure!
And…I will hush…but I felt bad for Sadie…when she said “I’m a tough little duckling!” I wanted to stop on Len’s toes…see if he still has the “feeling back!”
R……romance. Ugh. Give me a break already. Emma’s peptalk for Michael was great. Justvonebof the reasons why I like her.
How is Sadie in jeopardy but not Jonathan?
Sadie better not be the one going home. Not with Michael also in jeopardy and whoever else is going to be there.
I call BS on Sadie being in jeopardy! All I saw was positive feedback on her dance. I think they are punishing her because of Mark’s comments about Len.
@Vin… because DRAAAAAAMAAAAAAAA!
either that or they pick a couple of names out of a hat. 😉
She is not in jeopardy really. This is just another step in tearing down her confidence. It started with Carrie Ann last night. This is what this show does unfortunately. This will shake her. She doesn’t have dance experience nor all the experience of being in the business and being rejected. She will be safe but this will shake her confidence big time. So unfortunate. We have new TPTB but they are still playing games.
I smell season 18 all over again when R-romance appeared… Oh well. Can’t wait to see Julianne perform.
DWTS always does the spoofs (on political ads, movies trailers, etc) so well – I loved those.
I think Sadie will be safe; hoping Michael will be.
OMG, poor Julianne, that was a bad fall in rehearsal. I watched it in slo-mo and Val was nowhere near ready to catch her. I couldn’t believe it. Poor girl. I hope she is OK. Her outfit is beautiful tonight though. That was a fierce dance to “Chandelier” but Erin pronounced Allison Holker’s name wrong. She pronounced it “Hokler”. Eeek.
Kevin hart……well of course it’s one of the few actors that I dislike but then again it’s not Abby whatshername from dance moms lol.
“R” for Romance…give me a break. They might as well call themselves Maksyl in disguise . 😉 Anyways, I feel for my Sadie. I know she won’t go home, but I just hate seeing her so down. Also, I LOVED Mark’s laugh at his audition.
They have certainly been featuring Keo a lot since his elimination. I hope that they will continue to do so.
And Mark was just adorable in his audition tape. It is hard to believe that it has been seven years already.
Val flubbed that lift again – at least it wasn’t as bad as in rehearsal…
So Julianne was awesome. marks audition video was a throwback for sure. Tom made me laugh with his comment.
Julianne performance is sick! Looking at rehearsal, I can’t believe Val couldn’t catch her. But I guess accident happened.
Geez, Val screwed up the lift again, and Julianne had to power herself down to the floor; she is so strong. I’m surprised she let him try it after that fall in rehearsal: she should’ve had Tony or Derek do it, not Val. Otherwise it was a fun dance and Julianne did a great job.
Darn. We didn’t get to see the Derek/Emma/Michael bit. Bastards. I’ll let Courtney tell you about it.
I wish they would bring Brook Burke back. I can’t see the elegance in Erin for this role.
Jules dance was awesome! WTF VAL? Drop Jules again!
How DARE they put Sadie in Jeopardy! Right man went HOME. Enough of the female power numbers. Was this the last week with a results show? I hope not, I really enjoy the extra performances each week!
I thought Erin looked stunning tonight. She is beautiful in white.
Loved Julianne’s dance wished There was more of her and Derek together I am having a hard time relating to Janel There is something that I just don’t care about her Maybe she is just a littles to sure of herself and says she is never nervous Also I wish Lea was with Tony I can’t stand Artem he is creepy and I think Lea is a better dancer than him
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest lol
Randy reminds me of a younger Bruce Willis. Muscle, grin, sexy hands, and charm.
High five Girls!!! Though that was pure torture. I felt sorry Tavis and Sharna. I wish no one had to go yet.
Re: #26 – yes, definitely. We want to hear about it. 🙂
Allison’s dance was amazing. There was something about it that was a bit surreal and disturbing, and yet I found myself wanting to cry. She sure knows how to make people *feel* something when she dances. Wow.
I was not a fan at all of the dance that Allison did with the young girl. Guess all that artsy stuff is just not for her me. The nude outfit on the young girl looked inappropriate.
So I checked the cb page and people seem to be more concerned with Juliannes outfit/body suit and nothing else. Thank goodness for this site lol
Is there an elimination next week?
For me, the only thing wrong with the dance to Chandelier was that it didn’t actually show Sia enough. In this age of autotuned pop stars, I really appreciate a singer that can really SING, such as Sia.
Julianne should have had Tony do that lift with her. Much as he annoys me sometimes, Tony is an excellent and trustworthy partner. I still remember that pro dance Julianne did where Tony threw her over his head as she landed perfectly on two feet.
To be able to know just how much upward thrust was needed to allow Jules to be able to maneuver enough to land on her feet like a cat was amazing. And I just love to see her partner with her brother, even if only for a few bars of music.
Sorry to see Sharna leave the competition but happy we’ll hopefully be able to see her in pro dances.
did anyone actually dance the encore in the end or did I blink and miss it lol
These first two eliminations were pretty predictable. Bad attitude and poor dancing doesn’t go over well on this show. Lolo and Tavis didn’t get the memo I guess.
And.. for a former Pro that has moved on to bigger and better things(NAME ONE),
having your hack publicist critique a show you no longer want to be associated with -on twitter no less -especially the new judge-isn’t a good look. Just sayin’.
@Susan2 I believe that Sia purposefully chooses to hide her face. She rarely gives interviews, and when she performs she usually hides her face. She did the same thing on the Ellen Show. It’s a little strange, but I respect her wishes and appreciate the fact that she showcases amazing dancers.
Wow! I can’t believe that Val almost dropped Julianne. What’s his problem?? I’m tired of him. I have a feeling that the last two remaining couples just might be Janel & Val and Alfonso & Whitney. Of course I could be wrong and one of my favorites (Lea) just might take it home. I’m not remembering Janel after the show so much as a few others. She and Val are acting like they are too sure of themselves. And, the fake R….just makes me ill, what are you two trying to prove: that we are that gullible. 🙂
I really enjoyed this one hour of the results show, Mark has changed since he first came on the show. That was so cute showing him back in his first season.
Betsey was just beside herself when she was told she was safe. Everyone just loves her, all the couples and judges and Tom and Erin. I am happy for her. Also Tommy. He is a riot!! Neither one are really acting their age. They are so entertaining and are dancing pretty darn good, too.
I always have to wait until the show is over, because I don’t have a laptop, and my desktop is in another room away from my TV. So it’s one or the other.
You’ll have a good night. It’s nice to come here and visit in a nice atmosphere. I never get depressed when I come in and socialize.
High five to you too, Vogue….
HIIII!! Does anyone know where i can watch juliannes wipe out again?! SO PAINFUL LOOKING i was scared! sad to see tavis go;( i think its tommy’s time. can i be on this show??? like all stars plus 1 normal person? and then they have a disadvantage?idt be so fun and ill be with derek HAHA
Sia has a killer voice. I just wish she would sing facing the audience becuase she is also very pretty. Sidenote I meant fb not cb in the other post
I missed the first 15 minutes because of kid transportation needs, and for some reason, my DVR DIDN’T record tonight’s episode. It recorded last week, and it SHOULD HAVE recorded tonight, so I’m not a happy camper. So, I’m with @madeline…. Can anyone point to a youtube of the beginning of the show/practice session drop?
Wow Emma, I had no idea about Sia. She’s not only a talented singer but also does killer work as a songwriter for others, Rihanna among them.
Sadie handled her “not necessarily the bottom three” position very well.
I must have an extreme love of cheese, because I loved the fake movie trailers. I love movie night. Now just bring back classical night and my happiness will be complete.
I agree about having Tony doing the lifts. He recently did a beautiful star lift this season with Karina or Sharna in an opening number, I think? I never hold my breath watching him do lifts because I trust his abilities. I am not really a huge fan of his, but he was very sweet with Betsey this week. Anyway, I hope Julianne is truly alright. That fall in the rehearsal clip was startling and hard to watch. She really went for it and fell hard. I don’t know dance technique, but to an average viewer it didn’t reflect well on Val.
@ #15 Cheryl. L
I think you really hit the nail on the head. I suspect that TPTB were surprised in Week 1 at the votes Sadie got – Duck Dynasty followers, plus the same people that propelled Candace last season, plus others who just like a talented underdog, etc. High judges’ scores plus high votes received would move her further into the competition than their desire. So change the equation by lowering judge’s scores plus criticize her to make her lose confidence. Let’s hope Mark can keep her head straight, and maybe next week no Len and Bruno will help.
That’s where all the idiots hang out, Vin. 🙂
Well, these are really classy people, Sherry2. Apparently some of the Val fans are congratulating Val for dropping Julianne. One just attacked me on twitter for saying there were two things wrong with that dance and one was not enough Derek and that I would let them figure out the other one. Ya gotta laugh – don’t even mention Val’s name and they not only assume you are talking about him, but they attack you and show FAR MORE hate than I even came close to. LOL – um, look in the mirror sweetcheeks, ya hypocrite.
Thoughts of the result show:
-As a man, I LOVE the women pro dances buuut I agree it’s time to give the men pros a little love too.
-Allison Holker is a BEAST. Is she even human?
-Janel and Val getting the encore? Gaggg. “R for Romance” with Janel and Val? Double gaggg.
-It was time for Tavis to go home. Think he was always more focused about his book than the dancing sooo now he gets to focus on just that.
Also, adding, it seems like Janel and Val have Jazz next week. A dance Janel was trained in. Sooo I guess we know who’ll be getting 10’s next week and major praise from the judges. Oh joy………….
I eher.njoyed watching Allison and Maddie dance together. I couldn’t help but thinkthat one day that Allison’s daughter will be dancing with her. Also, maybe Allison’s married name(Boss) is easier to pronounce than Holker.
Enjoyed*
It bothers me that people on FB will find any excuse to hate on Julianne…they don’t even make sense. To criticize her dance costume for being too revealing is so hypocritical considering most of the female pros wear even more revealing clothes on a weekly basis. It’s also sad to see women bashing women and basically slut shaming them.
After tonight’s encore dance twitter thing and Val being so front and centre in pro dances, plus the romance crap, I am beginning to think he is being set up for the mb. much as I would rather that not be the case, something is making my spidey senses tingle.
#9 @ Jann: “trick” being the operative word.
Re: #49 – wow. I *really* don’t get how anyone could be offering congratulations to someone for dropping (and possibly injuring) someone. It’s more than a little scary to think there are people out there who think that way. Even if you don’t like the person who was dropped (and you like the dropper), have a little compassion, consideration and basic humanity. Please.
Val dropping Julliane shows he’s either incompetent or melicious. I don’t think either is a good choice
I agree with you #Judy about Val and them setting him up for the mirror ball. I have never seen him so front and center in pro dances and we are not seeing that much of Derek and Mark in pro dances. Val seems to be in a lot of the bumper dances compared to any of the other male pros. I am glad that Julianne was not seriously injured during the rehearsal when Val dropped her since you could hear he thud when she hit. You know that hurt for a while. I too am ready for some male pro numbers instead of all the female pro numbers and stick Val in the back.
I would have been a little surprised if Sadie had gone home. I think she, along with Alfonso and Bethany, are probably the ones that I expect to see in the final three, although I also love Lea’s dancing as well.
Just say no Val, just say no.
Val is 0 for 2 in dropping people in rehearsals (Kelly and Julianne) and Julianne almost ate it live.
I think Waltrip is on life-support and I’m not sure his humor will save him anymore.
I loved the movie preview clips and all the backstage clips in general.
I do want to see Tony’s audition tape next (I already saw Val’s, Karina’s and Cheryl’s). Of course I don’t have twitter so I can’t vote for that or the best dance or the…….
Glad the right person went home tonight, imo.
Ummm…did I miss something on my taped Results show. Where is the clip of Val dropping Julianne in rehersals?
It’s in there #dancewityou
I can’t tell you what time but it was a quick, clip preview of what was to come in Julianne’s dance.
Val isn’t malicious, he just sucks at lifting. Julianne ate it hard like Kelly did when she did a face plant when Val tossed her and he missed. You get a zero in lifting Val.
#56- I agree. For people to congratulate someone for dropping someone is just evil. I just don’t understand that kind of behavior. People may have favorites and be a loyal fan but to say things like that is just nasty. Why are there so many complaints about DWTS being “the Houghs” show when they all can see that Val is always front and center on every pros dancing? MnM won last season, didn’t they? Julianne have been giving Janelsky good scores and fans still complaining about Julianne being a judge. This is not healthy. Those fans might need to go to seaworld and learn from the orcas, those animals have bigger brain 😉
Hello,my 1st post over here. I enjoyed basically all the dancing, except for Michael, Jonathan and Tavis. That dropping of Julianne looked very painful but I am sure it wasn’t done on purpose. I read about how you all think that Val is the chosen one this time to get the MB. I am just curious why the pro’s want that ball so bad. It is not attractive looking and I have never seen where winning a MB trophy has gotten anyone that much further in their career. I really don’t think that Hollywood gives a rat’s patootie about it. But the pro’s all act like they have won an Olympic Gold Medal or something the way they carry on. I am just curious on your take of it.
Lizzie Grubman completely dissed Julianne on twitter last night. She tweeted she got a text saying a certain judge was dancing on the show and said ” why”. Then the brother of her client almost drops her! I imagine, in the dance world, almost dropping your partner is probably the cardinal sin. He apologised on twitter but that might be the end of his lifting partners like that on the show.
Fascinating! A non-professional, non Mirror Ball winning celebrity (Zendaya) was able to execute the same lift on TV with Val in her Argentine tango. Look at the tape! Both parties are to blame for the near drop on national TV. Arrgghh! So tired of the lack of objectivity of both sides of the “war”. Witney and Alfonso for the win!
Wait I just read in Glamour piece Val saying he and Janel are dancing to West Side Story ? I thought Derek and Bethany were !!??
And that near slip w Julianne again?? inexcusable and then in the Glamour piece he had the gall to say “we” were dancing full-out it was live blah blah blah. For him to even use the word we after that horrible incident in rehearsals. Be a man, Val YOU almost dropped her-she was just trusting you might get it right on live TV. He needs a break from all the pros dances. I want more Derek on my TV. What are TPTB thinking? They have an Emmy winning Derek Hough who was BEGGED all summer long to return to DWTS and they treat him like a damn prop.
yeah Val isnt malicious, he is just terrible at lifting and always has been. He’s said in previous seasons he’s afraid to do some of them because it’s something he’s never been trained in..he dropped poor kelly monaco right on her face. He obviously felt bad about it and apologized to julianne.
So because Val executed the lift once with another professional dancer (Zendaya) it means he wasn’t at fault in nearly dropping Julianne?? Your lack of logic is staggering. Take it elsewhere if you don’t like it here.
Skylar, I don’t think “the pro’s” want that ball so badly. I think a couple of them want it VERY badly, and others would love to have it but aren’t killing themselves over it.
But come on! Everyone likes to win. And I’d say that “Hollywood” is noticing Derek’s balls. 😉
Well, come on now – drops happen. I’m sure it’s happened to all of them. The larger issue, really, is Val’s asshole fans and their behavior. Blaming Julianne and congratulating Val?? Stupid. as. Fuck. So…they are implying that Val did it on purpose? Pretty sure that’s assault, ya little morons.
Val showed far more class about it and apologized on Twitter to Julianne. And Lizzie? Is blowing her clients “We didn’t want the judging job” cover with her behavior. LOL – nice one.
dancewithyou – it’s right before one of the commercials. If you got up for a snack or a bathroom break, you would have missed it. It was a pretty bad one.
I tend to think that Derek’s placement in pro dances is just fine with Derek. He’s so weird. But where he dances has nothing to do with Emmy’s. Those are for choreography, not dancing.
yeah its unfortunate that there are some unsavory fans out there that would do that, but thankfully most of the val fans that i follow were tweeting val laughing at what a terrible lifter he was a telling him he needed to get some lessons from tony, not congratulating him. people who would congratulate him have some issues.
Sad for Sharna but Tavis needs to go. It is only the second week and Vajanel is already starting to irritate me. I hope it does not go the way of last season where Maksyl showmance pissed me off so bad I stopped watching the show midway.
@PH or another Moderator:
Speaking of choreography, do we know who choreographed the incredible dance with Allison and the little girl? Allison herself?
That dance had elements and moves that I have never seen before.
“Hollywood is noticing Derek’s balls”. Oh Heidi, that was hilarious ! You cheeky little minx!
I wish they had scraped that lift or simplified it in some way. For both Julianne and Val’s sake.
I’m not saying the show isn’t pushing for Val to win the mirrorball (the pimping hasn’t been over the top yet but the season is still young) but I actually don’t think his placement in pro numbers has anything to do with that. The last few seasons he’s really started to be pushed as the focus in pro numbers I think, especially last season. For the opening numbers specifically I know Mandy Moore has said she uses him a lot for choreography so that might explain some of it.
But moving on — Tavis was the right person to go even though I’m sad for Sharna. Wasn’t expecting them to put Sadie in jeopardy. It would have made more sense to put Jonathan there as it’s more believable. Hopefully Sadie doesn’t let it get to her.
Ok, here’s the thing about lifts (and this is coming from someone who has done them herself and has a bf that does them on a weekly basis) – you have to take them seriously, because there’s high potential to injure both your partner AND yourself if they aren’t executed properly. My bf has a rule with his students for their showcase routines – if they’re still bobbling a lift after a month of rehearsing a routine, it gets tossed, because it’s simply not worth doing it due to the risk of injury (and on top of that, it looks sloppy). If you cannot cleanly execute a lift, you have no business doing it in a performance – if that was the case with Val and Julianne, than both of them should have had the good sense to say “Y’know what? It’s not worth the risk, and I don’t feel comfortable doing it.” And left it out of the routine. Or better yet – let Tony do it, because he’s by and far the ablest lifter on the show – likely from years with Fred Astaire studios, who count theater arts champs Eric Luna & Georgia Ambarian as two of their pros. I may not be the biggest fan of Tony’s choreography, but I will be the first to give props to him for being an excellent lifting partner – he and Julianne used to tear it up during pro dances back in the day. Val would be wise to spend some time watching Tony do his thing and see if it could help him become a better lifter.
And the injuries you can sustain from a botched lift are no joke – aside from concussions and head trauma from falls, there’s always the risk of torn muscles, sprains, dislocations, broken bones, etc. I had a friend in college who managed to tear his rotator cuff trying to catch a partner who was falling out of a star lift.
Wait, Courtney, what about what PH said towards the top of the post?
“Darn. We didn’t get to see the Derek/Emma/Michael bit. Bastards. I’ll let Courtney tell you about it.”
@Ashley L. – Without getting into detail, let’s just say there was a funny bit involving Emma, Mike, Derek, and “accidental boob grazes”. 😉
@Lee – The choreography that Allison & Maddie did was almost identical to the choreography Maddie did in the music video for “Chandelier”, and that was choreographed by Ryan Heffington…so I imagine it’s his choreography, with maybe some slight tweaking from Allison.
I don’t think they mentioned who choreographed it, but I would assume Allison.
#81 Gotcha. 🙂
Yeah, DLT – Mandy uses the pros who are available. Last season it was Val and some of the troupe – can’t remember which ones. Season before last, Derek was in the forefront a lot – which made me happy. 🙂 It’s not the show, in this instance, I don’t think – I think it’s who’s there. Derek was NOT there in season 18 at all. Amy said he would rush in to rehearsal from somewhere and then had to rush somewhere else afterwar. And knowing what he ended up doing the first half of the year, you can see why.
For those who want to see the rehearsal footage involving Val and Julianne, it’s right before the first commercial break, so somewhere around the 6 1/2 minute mark, IIRC.
As for the lifts: yeah, I think they should have had Tony do it. [Or, maybe if one of them was free, get Charlie White or James Maslow to do it. :p ]
It’s disgusting how some fans of the C-bros are delighting on Julianne’s fall.
Speaking of Eric Luna, Charlie White in one interview mentioned working with him in one of their lifts a few years ago. That is what is so amazing about these ice dancers. They do the lifts while skating
so fast. I went to one of the SOI shows and I couldn’t believe how they do it. Meryl also mentioned the time when Charlie tried to break her fall with his head and he ended in the hospital that night for checkup so yes, I agree these lifts can be very dangerous if not done right!
I also don’t think Julianne is quite as capable as she was back in the day – all of her dancing seems a lot more slow and labored, but that’s to be expected with so much time off. So I think it’s a combination of Val not being a great lifter and Julianne not being the liftee she once was. But I agree that a more capable person – Tony, or whatever – would have minimized the risk. That being said, I do far prefer Val’s dancing to Tony’s, and I don’t blame them for trying. It’s just stupid fans that try to make it a Hough Vs. Fam thing.
Allison Holker is the female version of Derek Hough
Val has not only executed that lift fine with Zendaya he did the same lift in a beautiful Rumba with Anna when they danced as Andrea Bocelli and Jennifer Lopez sang Perhaps in Spanish. And to be honest Julianne didn’t look all that steady that was some sloppy move out of lunge with her brother
I imagine after that really bad crash-to-the-floor in rehearsals, that Julianne was a little worried. All those dancers have a lot of ability to just keep on going but I really don’t know how they do it. Mind over matter I guess.
@Tela – Regardless of whether or not “Val executed that lift fine with Zendaya” or “with Anna when they danced to Andrea Bocelli” once upon a time, if he was flubbing it during rehearsal, he had absolutely no business doing during a live performance – PERIOD. I don’t care what he did a year ago, a few months ago, etc. Skills get rusty – and while Julianne may be a bit rusty herself, once upon a time she was THE liftee on DWTS, and she and Tony could knock out star lifts without even breaking a sweat. In other words – even a rusty Julianne is likely better than most of the other female pros who aren’t as used to doing lifts. Is she partially responsible for the mistake? Probably, because she should have communicated to Val that she didn’t feel comfortable doing the lift, but Val is not blameless here – contrary to what some of his fans think. Part of being a responsible lifter is not only making sure your partner doesn’t fall, but also serving as a buffer should your partner start to topple – and he didn’t seem to make a huge effort to cushion her fall. He may have sprained something in the process, but compared to the potential head trauma Julianne could have suffered had she hit the floor? I don’t really give a rat’s ass if Val’s sore for a few days. Lifts have the potential to injure both the lifter and liftee – but trust me when I say the injuries sustained while trying to catch a falling partner are nowhere near as bad as the ones sustained from getting dropped.
Well I am pretty sure that Julianne falling when Val was going to lift her was an accident, we see clips of this happening all the time to other pairs. But because some of Val’s fans are happy should not reflect on Val. Val wants to win just like Tony wants to win, just like Mark wants to win, just like Peta wants to win, just like Karina, Cheryl and all the rest want to win. They don’t sign up just to dance every week, they sign up to win. That is the nature of the beast. I am pretty sure that if Julianne was in any way concerned she would have changed up the dance and have someone else lift her. And sorry but I thought that the dance was just a vehicle to showcase Julianne and I honestly did not think it was that great. I can’t wait until they have a showcase dance with CAI, with Bruno and with Len. But I did love Val, Peta and Karina, they were awesome.
Julianne could not be that rusty as she has just come off a summer tour with Derek that I am sure was grueling. I did not think she was labored or slow. And she was not coming out of a lunge with her brother but a spin from Keo into Val’s arms. I just watched it again and she did not look sloppy; but she could have been remembering what happened during rehearsal with Val that could have made her hesitant. Artem did not have a problem catching her after the throw over someone’s head. Anyway it was Val’s job to protect her during that lift. I noticed at the end that Tony put his arm around her during the applause. Should have been him doing that lift.
I am confident that Val would never maliciously/intentionally drop Julianne or any other dancing partner (most of you seem to agree with this). As PH and Courtney mentioned the dancers are human, lifts are NO JOKE, and drops happen. It is unsettling (I wish I could say unfathomable, but unfortunately I have come to realize how cruel people can be) that anyone would congratulate Val for dropping Julianne. I do appreciate that Val is so apologetic about what happened. I am truly thankful no one was seriously injured!
I must also admit that when it comes to lifting partners, I would go with Tony all day, every day. I just re-watched the pro dance he did with Julianne to Rascal Flatts “Here Comes Goodbye” – tear it up indeed, Courtney!
The only thing that reflects on Val is his inability to complete the lift. Does it also reflect on Julianne? Probably. She should have spoken up.
But this conversation continues because *Val’s fans* are bound and determined to completely absolve him of any blame whatsoever, using any illogical means necessary. Be it blaming Julianne, or by illogically saying that since he completed it with others, then it had to be her fault – seriously, how far did you get in school to make that sort of leap?
Julianne did just spend a few months dancing with Derek and several other male professionals. And I’m sure they didn’t leave the lifts out.
As much as Julianne is rusty from not dancing for years, she was doing lifts for a couple months on tour. She was basically thrown from the ground on to Armen on a moving platform to then do more lifts while moving.
Val did say in the glamour interview “I’m very frustrated. We did that trick a million times, and then one time we put a little too much energy into it, she fell. That was very traumatizing for me. There’s a moment in that [sequence] that you have to let go because there’s that trust, but after that little mishap in rehearsal, I just couldn’t let go. I was very nervous all the time.”
I think Val said it pretty well himself that he thinks its his fault cause he couldn’t let go. I agree that it’s both Julianne and Vals fault as they should have made the decision to take the lift out if Val was feeling uneasy. But blaming Julianne because “Val’s done that lift before” is just nonsense.
What do you think? I think something strange was going on with the Sharna/ Tavis partnership. We all know how originally Sharna wasn’t one of the pros announced for season 19. Then there was a huge stink by her fans (myself included) and all of a sudden she was added to the show. Since she was added at the last minute, the TPTB needed a last-minute partner for her and hence they came up with Tavis (I think he wanted to dance in season 20 – IF there is a season 20!). He was complaining after the show last night that he really didn’t want to do Season 19 but he was, in a sense, “forced” to do it even after explaining to the producers that he had no time to do the show because of other obligations. At first I was turned off by his complaining but then my overactive brain went into overdrive and came up with this scenario and then I started to not be so turned off by him. What do you all think? Was Tavis persuaded by TPTB to do Season 19 because a last-minute partner was needed for Sharna or does my brain need a tropical, frosty drink?! Thanks for your thoughts…
No, highly doubtful they base hiring a celeb on the screams of a few fans of a pro – not when it’s Sharna. Sorry. I love her too, but she’s not Derek, Cheryl or Karina and I don’t think they would do it for any of those three either.
I attended last night’s live show. A few things from that… it did look a little like Julianne was laboring a wee bit, but she’s still incredible. Tavis sat in the celebrity balcony looking bored through much of the show; I’m not sure if he couldn’t hide his lack of enthusiasm or just didn’t care. Even my hubby –who doesn’t really watch the show– commented on how indifferent he seemed about the whole competition. Finally –and Tom may have said this live but I can’t remember and it’s so loud in there that it’s hard to know what’s going on much of the time– but Sia wanted the attention to be on Maddie and Allison, so that’s why they didn’t show her face at all. (Oh, and Abby Lee Miller was there of course. Good grief, does her voice ever carry.)
Sherry! More details from last night’s show, please!! I love hearing behind the scene stuff!
@Sherry – You are one lucky girl. 🙂
I can’t imagine how loud it must be, especially when Alfonso and Witney hit the dance floor.
Oh gosh, what else… well, to me, the set was actually pretty big. I always hear ‘it’s so much smaller than it looks on TV’ but I’ve seen some tiny sets and this wasn’t one of them. I also thought Antonio was surprisingly adorable. He smiled the whole time and waved and blew kisses at anyone and everyone. At one point, I saw him in the celebrity balcony area waving at someone, somewhere, so I looked around. I didn’t see anyone waving at him, so I waved back, lol. I was in the first balcony (second floor) so I wasn’t super close to anyone, but I was especially taken with Peta. She’s gorgeous in a way that doesn’t come across on TV (at least not for me).
“I am SO OVER the all female strip tea…I mean, dance numbers. Come on.” – PH
Ditto. I didn’t realize until yesterday that Lindsay and Jenna choreographed that opening strip tease. Given their youth, I kind of feel like they’re trying to emulate all those previous, older women, choreographed, strip numbers. I remember being that age and that’s a tough transition where you’re not really a grown woman yet but you think in order to appear like one, everything needs to be overtly sexual so they copy their older peers.
@Ashley L – And the men can keep their shirts on too. I’m SO OVER that as well.
You can still portray sexy in a dance without removing most of your clothing. Just choreography a better dance then instead of using your bare body as your prop.
@ Sandy
Totally agree. Sexy (a little skin) isn’t a bad thing once in a while but nowadays EVERYTHING, especially, women and girls, are acting or portrayed as only sexual or hyper-sexual objects to the point that respect, self-respect, intelligence, personality, imagination and creativity get lost.
I love something Jacqueline Bisset said recently that young women today are obsessed with being “hot” rather than beautiful. Isn’t that the truth, “hot” connotes only good for sex whereas beautiful encompasses so many other qualities of women as females and human beings with brains and souls.
Here’s what Bisset said:
“It’s brutal out there now,” she told The Daily Telegraph. “Girls today are so attractive and sexy, and they show themselves off in such an obvious way, so men feel that they are in a sweet shop.
“The flip side is that women see themselves as interchangeable. I feel that this obsession to be ‘hot’ is more prevalent than ever it was in my youth.
“It’s not, ‘I want to be charming and magical and romantic and beautiful’. It’s ‘I want to be hot’. In other words, ‘I want men to want to screw me.’”
Bisset said some women were like this partly because of a sense of “desperation” and “often end up feeling used”.
Hmmm. Blaming woman and calling them “desperate” for wanting to do a sexy, scandalous dance number strikes me as being problematic. These girls are of legal age, and they can do what they want. And saying that girls want to be hot purely so that men will “screw” them is only an assumption. I sometimes like to feel hot when I get dressed up and go dancing, and I’m not even attracted to men. I do it because I want to feel good about myself!
For me, the problem lies with the fact that (mostly) men are in charge of the show, and I have to question their intentions with these overly sexy female dance numbers. Especially with Sadie and Beth on this season, they should maybe be more mindful of the sexualization of women and how it can impact younger viewers who may be watching. This group number, plus Julianne’s nude costume, was a little too much for one night. It’s ok to have the sexy as long as you have something to balance it out. It’s important to show girls out there that there are many ways to be a woman, and being sexy isn’t a requirement (though it’s not something to be shamed for)
I apologize if I misinterpreted your words Ashley L, but I just thought I’d offer my input! Basically I’m trying to say that I don’t blame the female pros for being sexual and wanting to be hot, I’m blaming the men in charge for potentially putting out a bad message.
Sounds to me like you’re having your cake and eating it too, Emma. You can’t really cherry pick who to “blame” for the oversexualization. Everyone plays their part. Everyone has responsibility.
@Emma – Not trying to diminish your argument in any way, but I think the problem most of us have with all the hip-rolling, hair-flipping, Beyonce-esque, I-am-woman-hear-me-roar routines we’re seeing from the female pros is that they’re just getting…repetitive. One-dimensional. WE know the female pros are far more talented & well-rounded than this narrow cross-section of choreography suggests – we just want them to show it. I want to see their athleticism and creativity – I’d actually love to see the an all-female paso doble routine. Show a more aggressive side of the women, and a different take on a typically male-dominated dance. The one area in which I think the male pros on the show have typically bested the females is in the all-guy dances – the men don’t cling to this “I’m a man, look at how manly I am, rawr!” ideal – they just DANCE. I loved the routine we saw to “Seven Nation Army” a few seasons back – was just a good, creative routine. They didn’t get bogged down trying to reinforce their masculinity or prove how great it was to be a dude. Lately, it seems like every single all-female pro routine we’ve seen has been a little too heavy on the “girl power” aspect – “I Am Woman”, “Run the World”, “Bo$$”, and then this week’s routine were great, sure, but surely there’s more to these women than just promoting girl power. And I don’t necessarily think it’s the “men upstairs” steering things in that direction – from what we’ve heard, the pros are free to choreograph whatever they’d like, and TPTB are always looking for pros to choreograph pro dances – they’re willing to work with the pros on themes and what have you. I personally LOVED the pro jive routine Kym choreographed back in season 14 to “Dance with Me Tonight” – it wasn’t hung up on gender roles or being sexual and free; it was just a fun routine.
I agree, these are grown women, and they can do what they want – I’m not gonna knock anyone’s hustle for wanting to feel sexy & feminine. But this is an entertainment program, and I think you start to lose your audience a bit when every single performance they see from you is interchangeable. It’s great being a woman; I agree with that – but maybe mix things up a little and find a different theme from time to time.
@Emma
“It’s ok to have the sexy as long as you have something to balance it out.”
That was my point. And the Bisset opinion, which I totally agree with, was more of an overall view of our society today. Sexuality is great and natural, it just gets tiring and diminishing if it’s the only or most important trait shown. We’re more multi-dimensional and have more depth than that, it would just be nice to see it.
Thanks for clarifying, Courtney. I assumed that the producers gave the girls a song/theme, but obviously you are more informed about what goes on behind the scenes; I absolutely defer to your understanding of how the show works. And Ashley L, I’m glad that we were able to find some common ground in our thoughts! It’s sometimes hard to pick up on everything that someone is trying to say over the internet.
My apologies, Heidi, I wasn’t trying to cherry pick. I can respect the fact that we have different opinions.
Thank you, Sherry! Love it!
