DWTS 19, Week 2 on Afterbuzz TV
Once again, I’m posting it without having a chance to watch the whole thing. I love Keo. That is all. 🙂 I’ll add my comments in the comments when I do see the whole thing. My one gripe is that they mention Lea’s training – but don’t acknowledge Janel’s. Janel has training in Jazz, Hip Hop, Broadway and other styles of dance and it’s much more recent than Lea’s.
To be fair, no one commented on Alfonso’s experience either. If I remember correctly, the comment on Lea’s dance experience was grouped in with giving her props too. This show was so funny- Keo is my new favorite person in life.
Enjoyed the show and glad they address some of the comments from last week.
For me in general, I like Beth but I don’t connect as well but the same goes for Janel, Sadie. I think Beth just needs to warm up a little more since she’s not a performer.
Overall, I don’t know if this me, but I am not as connected and invested in this cast as I was last season with Amy, Charlie, and Candiance.
Glad Serge is gone now. He has such a familia bias and I find it irritating. Elena does also with her connection to them through their new dance studio, but she has good insight regardless. Thing with Janel and Val is they don’t connect with the audience imo. Although the fact they were able to change their dance style and now someone from West Side Story is going to be at the show, they are getting a lot of preferential treatment. So it feels like they will be pimped by the producers and the judges. Would rather she go and Lea stay. Hopefully that is what happens.
That doesn’t change my point, though, Bridget. Sure, they gave Lea props but they made it sound like she was good BECAUSE she has past experience. The EXACT same thing can be said about Janel and yet it wasn’t.
And for the record, Alfonso isn’t NEARLY the ringer that Janel and Lea both are. He was trained in tap when he was a child – 13 years old – and we’ve seen little from him since. I could find no video of him dancing as an adult beyond “the Carlton” – and honestly, that’s a gag. It’s not something that required training.
It’s so funny….Maks fans see Derek pimping *everywhere* but are totally blind to the Val/Janel pimping that is all over this show. They comment about Derek and Bethany’s video being front and center on one of the DWTS home pages, but ignore the fact that Val’s was up there for a couple WEEKS and that Meryl and Maks was there all of last season. Hell, you vote and you don’t see a vid of the person you voted for, but one of Meryl and Maks. Really, who’s getting pimped?
So yes – quite a bit of preferential treatment in the Chmerkovskiy clan. I think they are trying to make Val happen in the event that Derek leaves. He did say he almost didn’t come back because he’s exhausted. He’s very easily talked back in though. Darn fans at shows. 🙂
Heidi- I totally get your point and respect it, I just don’t think that Janel having experience was deliberately left out of the conversation in this instance. IMO, I find AfterBuzz very unbiased.
I thought Serge brought great insight to this show and meshed with the panel well. Of course, he’s gonna be loyal to Maks- that’s who taught him his whole life, but I still think he was able to give good commentary. We’ll be seeing in fill-in more there I’m sure.
@Judy
The fact that someone is coming from WSS to be in the audience has nothing to do with preferential treatment for Val & Janel…thats something that George P. from abc did all on his own because he has some connections with some of the actors from the movie, he speaks about it in his interview with them
Is Keo part of the fam? The only reason I ask is when he and Lolo were on GMA, they asked them who was going to win or who was the one to beat, something like that. Lolo deferred to Keo and he said Janel. ???? I mean this was after the first show and he wasn’t hesitating, he wasn’t saying oh, there are several, etc. Nope, he says Janel.
I just do not connect to Janel at all. She seems fake to me and her actions to get attention sometimes border on the obnoxious. She is a good dancer but as for her personality, not so much. She is trained in jazz so I expect this dance to be easy for her, but I am sure the package will show her struggling to get it. Packages are scripted anyway, so take it all with a grain of salt. I really want Alfonso to win this thing. His appeal is wide and I really see him in the finals. I hope the final 4 are Sadie, Lea, Bethany and of course Alfonso.
@chelle, sure George mentioned it etc., but if it becomes part of the performance night and this person is interviewed from the audience, asked for their opinion in the dance, it does play into bigger awareness for them as a couple. So anything outside of the normal dance routine, judges comments, heighten their profile over other couples. It will depend on how the producers use it or if they do at all.
@Cheryl L. – yeah I noticed that too and was a bit surprised. He didn’t even mention Alfonso or Sadie who had standout first nights. Since he’s brand new, it’s possible he may have been “adopted” by the fam.
@ judy
they talked to sadie’s dad in the audience one week and didnt talk to anyone else’s guests. was that preferential treatment for sadie? Several of Janel’s PLL family have been there and I’ve barely seen them flash across the camera. It’s just something dwts does depending on the guest and how big/entertaining they think they’ll be. If lea can get Michael J. Fox next week, im sure they will talk to him. If alfonso can ever get Will Smith to come, heck, they would probably dedicate a whole episode to his comments.
Or it’s possible that he just likes Janel?? It could be. On Afterbuzz he commented that Alfonso was total final three, as I recall – I got at least that far in watching before work.
This was a far more enjoyable episode of Afterbuzz than last week. Most of it was thanks to Keo and Elena. I found myself really agreeing with Elena on a lot of things and she was just in a better mood than Anna seemed to have been last week……. and Keo was pretty funny as well. I ship him and Suri. (jk)
I didn’t mind that much that they did not mention Janel’s experience this week. However, if next week they rave about how amazing her Jazz is and completely forget that she was TRAINED IN JAZZ.. then I’ll mind.
Or, there are people out there that actually like Janel and Val, and connect with them, and send them trending on twitter for the encore dance….shocking hahaha
Yeah, there were only two options in the encore dance, sweetie – why do you think that is? :::rolls eyes::: Derek trended when people twitter voted to see the first casting video, and then Mark got the second one.
Let’s not make it sound like Janel and Val won something massive the other night. Let’s try for a little reality check.
And one of the encore twitter dance teams had a massive follower advantage. There was no surprise how that one was going to turn out.
The “reality” is they are doing very well with performances the judges and the audience just have to see again because it was so much fun to watch and eventhough there is a small group that picks on them for every little thing there are so many people loving where this team is going from the fans to fellow dancers
My question is, are they so insecure that they have to rely on a added showmance? Why can’t they just dance without the added drama? Val gets trained dancers one after another, but hasn’t been able to deliver at the end.
Keo “Karina’s sexy, yes!” I’ll agree with that! 😉
@beesneez – Please learn to differentiate between fact and opinion. And if you don’t like the opinions here, LEAVE.
beezneez, if only you actually knew what you are talking about.
Buh Bye, beesneez. Learn how we play here or you don’t get to post.
It’s easy to win a Twitter vote when you’re going against a bran new pro and a celebrity who isn’t as big on SM. I like to see them go against Bethany and Derek. I think Bethany and Derek would have gotten the encore dance had it not been for Bethany’s injury. Their dance was worth watching again.
So, their answer to the Derek “diss” of last week is that Derek fans are “passionate.” See this says they take no responsibility for their comments, that they are correct but instead blame it on the fans. Sergei needs to take responsibility for how his statements were interpreted. I do not always agree with everything that the folks say, BUT never to the degree in the last two weeks. They are always asking for five stars on I-tunes and trust me I’m not feeling the five stars. My other gripe is here they were so worried about what Sergei said and the reaction it got, but tonight they allowed Keo to throw his celeb under the bus, and I found that sad. I find Keo to be one of those people who doesn’t filter much of what he says and that never turns out well. I think Keo seems very nice but someone (not a fam member) should just take him aside and talk to him about the do’s and don’ts. There is a lot more I would like to say but I am just going to end by saying two things. First, I am glad that Serge is done, which is odd because I really liked him on SYTUCD. Last is just this, there have been many times I haven’t agreed with the hosts comments, but last week was different. And Sergei now matter how much you try to “explain” that gift comment regarding Derek…it just isn’t going to work. You should have apologized and simply said “oops.” Then people like me wouldn’t still be talking about it.
The Keo love remains. 🙂 I did feel he seemed overwhelmed by the culture shock known as DWTS and though I would have liked to see him go out on a better note, I really think the acclimation period provided by his role for the remainder of the season set him up nicely for future pro opportunities (hint, hint, Mr. Wade).
Otherwise, I enjoy hearing the other opinions of the dances though I still found Serge’s tone to be a bit snide regarding Derek…guess it’s back to my oversensitive, passionate corner, huh? Even though I’m not necessarily of the Derek dances on water persuasion…even though Derek literally does dance on water, lol.
