PureDWTS Season 19, Week 3 – A Brief Rant on “Movie Week” Issues

Since Heidi’s “Who’s Dancing What?” post is getting a tad long, I thought I had better move this over to its own post and open the floor a bit more for discussion 🙂 So as of yesterday, we received intel that Janel & Val had switched songs – they were no longer dancing to “I Feel Pretty”, and had been seen rehearsing to “America” instead.  At the time, we didn’t have an explanation as to why; but now, with some additional intel, I feel as though a bit of a rant is in order…

…but first, an explanation of what I like to call West Side Storygate.  As of Monday, we had heard that SOMEONE was dancing a Viennese waltz to “I Feel Pretty”; based on hints Derek gave during the show, we assumed it was Bethany & Derek.  However, Val actually confirmed in a post-show interview that it was he & Janel, and that he had requested the dance style be changed from Viennese waltz to jazz “in order to do the movie justice”.  Apparently he actually choreographed a pretty cool routine that was reminiscent of the big dance at the gym in the movie – the troupe was involved, they were going to have a big dance set, the works.  However, apparently later in the week (I guess Tuesday or Wednesday), the studio that owns the rights to the movie allegedly said “Whoa, hey, time out there, chief – you can use ‘I Feel Pretty’, but the dance can’t look anything like the movie!” So basically, kind of the same thing that happened to Derek in season 15, when he & Shawn were tasked with doing a Knightrider-themed bhangra…but were not legally allowed to use any elements from Knightrider.  A tough row to hoe for any pro, methinks.  So Val basically had to redo the entire thing – they switched songs, changed the set, omitted the troupe, and redid most of the choreography.  Janel picks up choreography quickly and should PROBABLY be ok in time for the show, but Val was (understandably) upset.  Which brings me to my rant…

…WHY WEREN’T ALL THE RIGHTS TO THE SONGS AND MOVIES BEING USED CLEARED PRIOR TO THIS WEEK???!!! Seems like several couples were still waiting to see what their music and dance styles would be as of Monday evening – that’s gotta be a tad stressful for the pros, who then have to scramble to adapt to themes, music, and dance styles thrown at them at the last minute.  Seems like they haven’t had this problem so much in previous season that have done a “movie week” theme – maybe we just didn’t hear about them, but I’m wondering if perhaps Rob  & Co. have tried to be a bit too accommodating to the celebs this season, and let them suggest the movies they want to dance to….and that’s resulted in some time crunches & movie/music clearance issues.  Remember, the added complication of “movie week” clearances is that you have to clear both the song AND the theme rights to the movie – and the latter category is where we encounter most of the issues.  So anywho – what are you guys’ thoughts as viewers? Would you mind seeing a dance using a song from a certain movie that really wasn’t at all reminiscent of that particular movie? Is there any benefit to letting the celebs pick what movies they want? Do we really need movie week at all? Let’s hear it 🙂

And because I’m not a total Crabby McCrabberpants…here’s a pic of Witney holding Alfonso’s adorable son.  Because ADORABLE BABIES, dammit. 😉

Mark Ballas Interviewed On His New EP “Kicking Clouds”, DWTS Partner Sadie Robertson, And More

Mark Ballas talked to Celebuzz about his new “Kicking Clouds” EP and how it was inspired. Here is a take explaining…

I’ve been working on it for awhile now actually, we’ve probably been working on the EP for the past year and a half. It’s super hard to focus solely on one thing, especially when you’re juggling. So I would always made sure that whenever I was working on the EP I had 100% time to put razor focus on it. So that’s why it took longer than we originally planned. But, the inspiration behind it was just to make people move, to want to feel something when they hear these records. Also, to have tender moments. That’s why I love some of the ballads on it they’re really heartfelt and meaningful with the lyric. Also they’re some songs on there like “Get My Name” and “Spank Me” that just make you wanna move, they’re infectious and you can’t help but move to them. That was kind of the goal with this EP we wanted to you on a journey when you’re listening to it. You have those moments when they’re fun and fresh and then there’s moments when it’s deep and sad and then there’s also moments when it’s super sexy and flirty and makes you feel something.

Mark also chatted on his new Dancing With The Stars partner Sadie Robertson….

I was excited to have someone youthful and after I found out it was her I went and watched a few episodes and I remember thinking, “Wow she’s going to be an energetic little one. She’s going to love the process.” Then when I met her, she was exactly that, a ball of energy, hard worker, the sweetest, most down-to-earth, humble, one of the most kind human beings that I’ve met in a long time. The whole family, The Robertsons, they’re amazing and I’m having a wonderful time. I’m really enjoying my time with her.

DWTS Allison Holker Gives A Sneak Peek Of Her New Dance With Jonathan Bennett And More

Channel Guide Magazine talked with pro Allison Holker. They talk of Dancing With The Stars and what it was like to get the call to do the show. She also talks on what it’s been like to dance with partner Jonathan Bennett. Below is take on their next dance and possible future dances.

Next week is movie night; do you know what you’re dancing?
We are doing a tango! I’m not allowed to reveal the song yet, I want fans to be surprised, so it’s a secret. (Sources reveal that Holker and Bennett will be dancing to Beyoncé & Andre 3000’s Back to Black from the 2013 film, The Great Gatsby.) But the routine is very dark, and I think that’s why it’s going to be a challenging week for Jonathan because he’s such a fun, lively person. We’re going to try to get him in to a deep, dark, place for this routine. But I know he can do it.

What style of dance are you most excited to perform?
I’m looking forward to performing a contemporary dance with Jonathan. I think it could bring something unique out of him, and be a really great story. But I’m also really, really excited to do the Samba. I think Samba is so much fun — your hips are rolling, you’re bouncing — it’s really fun to watch.

What style of dance are you most nervous about?
Part of me is nervous to do a quickstep, because it’s very tricky, and it’s very hard, and it’s very fast. But I’m willing to take on that challenge. But I think everyone’s scared to do quickstep for good reason.

When you get to hip-hop are you going to bring in your husband tWitch?
Oh yes, of course! You know when we get hip hop we’re going all in. You know that we’re going to be bringing in my man, and together, we’re going to teach Jonathan. I’m hoping to dance to Jason Derulo’s Wiggle. That would be cool-ass.

Bring them on! I can’t wait! Lots more at Channel Guide Magazine.
