Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 4 – Who’s Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)
Well, some interesting dances this week. I will have to see all of the song/dance combinations to see if I really believe these songs were chosen by the dancers. Bethany and Janel having the same style AGAIN stretches credulity a bit far, if you ask me. It also occurs to me that the reason Alfonso was underscored last week is because they knew he’d come roaring back with “the Carlton” this week. 🙂
ETA: Welp, some signals got crossed and we made a boo-boo – Lea is dancing to “Dance with My Father” and Jonathan has a samba. Lo siento 🙁 Bloggers are human, too. And we’re fairly certain that Janel’s dancing to Sam Smith’s cover of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” – which is pretty awesome, if you haven’t seen it yet.
ETA2: Same song, different artist apparently, for Bethany and Derek.
ETA3: Finally got Mike’s song!!
ETA4: Hey, Rob Wade replied to me on Twitter!! I was whining about not getting the rules for the “You Raise the Paddle” thingy and he responded with “Go to abc.com at 7:30, get signed in and wait for the first couple” – something along those lines. And guess who’s up first!!

Heh
Is it me or Jonathan’s song choice would be better suited for a rumba? I’m glad they got contemporary since that’s in Allison’s specialty. Also, is she the first pro to not have a ballroom background? Not to be mean because I love Allison on SYTYCD but she shouldn’t really be a pro on a ballroom dance show. And with Janel and Bethany have to do the same dances 4 weeks in a row is ridiculous. It’s like their preparing for the final 2 already.
Is it Ok to already be teary about Jonathans song. Remembering some of his interviews abt his fathers passing last year and why he is doing dwts.
Cris, Allison has ballroom in her background. See this post for a bio on her. It might surprise you….
https://www.puredwts.com/2014/08/13/dwts-season-19-who-are-pro-dancers-keoikantse-motsepe-and-allison-holker/
According to Janel’s twitter, she’s dancing to something by Sam Smith. She didn’t say which song, but she did post a short clip of him performing “Stay with Me” in concert.
Yes, we reported on that earlier, Jessica. I can confirm that it’s NOT “Stay with Me”.
Oh, sorry…I didn’t see it. *blushes* I assumed it would be one of his current songs. Maybe “I’m Not the Only One?”
I guess Alfonso and Witney were allowed to spill all of the details for their song next Monday night. They announced on twitter their song choice and that they will be doing the Carlton dance.
I wonder why some pairs are allowed to tell and others are not?
@Jessica – Think more along the lines of “song that he did a cover of”.
So that is a good variety of dances but I am a little worried for Jonathan and Allison. Not that I think they will do bad but if they are eliminated on the same day that they danced a routine dedicated to his dad it would be messed up
And I am loving the fact that Sadie and mark have really been given/assigned/chosen
The samba
I feel bad for Cheryl having to choreograph a samba to that song. Doesn’t strike me as a samba song!
I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Sam Smith? Whitney Houston cover?
I’m getting that feeling that I did last season where some couples seem to be doing more Latin/Jazz/Contemp than Standard/AT.
I miss the old days when each couple would alternate each week. Also, week 4 and only 1 paso so far. I guess I’m feeling grumpy today.
Expect the waterworks for Jonathan’s routine. Interesting to see the older celebs (Betsey & Tommy) dancing the jive. I also don’t see “Love Will Never Do Without You” working well as a samba.
Scoring predictions
Jonathan/Allison- (9,9,9,9)
Michael/Emma- (7,6,7,6)
Tommy/Peta- (7,7,7,7)
Betsey/Tony- (6,6,6,6) [For some reason I can see this being a mess]
Lea/Artem- (9,10,9,9)
Bethany/Derek- (8,8,8,8)
Janel/Val (9,9,9,10)
Alfonso/Witney (10,10,9,10)
Antonio/Cheryl (8,7,7,8)
Sadie/Mark (8,8,8,9)
Eliminated: Michael or Betsey
Isn’t this week four?
Didn’t Sam Smith do a cover of How Will I Know? It’s on YouTube. And I do remember Allison dancing ballroom but what I meant that Allison isn’t formally trained in ballroom such as the other pros. It might play as a disadvantage for her since she’s used to dancing ballroom with other people’s choreography and not her own if that makes sense. CAI is already nitpicking her.
Another note I really want Betsey and Michael to do well since they are the most enthusiastic out of everyone and they really try hard. But it sucks since their 100% isn’t going to beat Janel or Bethany on their bad day.
@Sandy I’m thinking that it’s not that some are allowed to and others aren’t. Maybe the pros and celebs themselves don’t want to spoil anything. On Alfonso’s part, I think he just spoiled his song so that people get excited and watch the show on Monday night which TPTB might see as a big benefit. Kinda like: “Alright good Alfonso get people excited so that they’ll tune in Monday night!”. Of course this is just me making a BIG assumption lol
Anyways, I am looking forward to seeing Jonathan and Allison’s dance (first time I’ve been looking forward to seeing their dance). I think it’s gonna be very emotional and given that Allison is a master at Contemporary dancing she is going to create something BEAUTIFUL I’m sure. And that song is so touching. I love it. Especially love the rendition by that kid that went viral last year.
Betsey and the Jive worry me. Same goes for Tommy. I think we might see them struggle a bit next week 🙁 Hopefully this doesn’t send either of them home.
I’m prepared to see Antonio do a super awkward Samba which will be more awkward due to him being shirtless. Kinda like went Brant Daugherty did a very awkward Salsa shirtless… very cringe worthy.
Of course I fully expect Alfonso and Witney to knock it out of the park next week. Unless there’s some major mistakes, I can’t see this dance NOT getting 10’s. Maybe Len will be the only one to not give it a 10 considering he’s.. well.. Len.
My gut is also telling me that next week Bethany might struggle. Really hope I am wrong though. My gut’s also ready to puke while watching Janel do the Rumba with Val. I’m prepared to hear Carrie Ann and Bruno gushing over how “sexy” and “steamy” her Rumba was and blah blah blah. I’ll also be surprised it Val doesn’t include a “did they or did they not kiss” moment during the dance. Barf.
Cris, did you read the link? Allison has been “formally” trained in dance (which included ballroom) since age 4. What’s more, she started teaching dance at age 16. She’s also been choreographing on her own or else why would the show even hire her? Also, how could she come up with the choreo she did in the Chandelier number last week if she couldn’t choreograph? That was brilliant (imo). As for Carrie Anne, she’s not nit picking on Allison anymore than she has the other pros all through out this time.
@cris *smacking my head* I think you’re right. I remember listening to it at work the other day, but I may have confused my Whitney songs lol.
I don’t think I’ll be able to handle Jonathan’s dance!!!
Am I the only one who’s getting annoyed that Janel and Bethany are being given the same dance style every week? Worried that Bethany might have some trouble, and I’m sure the judges are going to be gushing over Janel.
I’m guessing Janel is dancing to How Will I Know mainly because it’s the only Sam Smith cover I can think of…
Surprised that everyone is skeptical about “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” – I actually think it’s got a more appropriate samba beat than “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It”. Does that mean I think he’s actually gonna do well with the samba? No…but I think he’s at least got an acceptable song.
Not “Dance with My Father”!
I’ll need to stop by the store and buy loads of tissues. That song when Luther sings it gets me every time. I hope Jonathan, not for his emotional sake but for the story, shows footage of him with his father from baby to adulthood. I’m already getting weepy at the thought of it.
I’m not saying that she couldn’t choreograph. I love her choreography from what I’m seeing but it’s mostly modern and contemporary. I watched her back in SYTYCD season 2 and I know she’s been dancing since 4 but I never heard that she was trained in ballroom as well. I’m just not used to seeing her as a ballroom dancer. I do love her though.
@Jessica – He also did a bad@$$ cover of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman. Just throwing that out there 🙂
I worry for Team Quack Attack next week.
In general, I always worry the week when Mark and his partner get samba, because IMO, samba tends to be Mark’s least successful dance (and I say that as a devoted supporter/voter of his since Season 5).
More importantly, though, with Sadie being only 17, I’m afraid whatever her “personal story/greatest year” is not going to have much of an impact, in the midst of the emotional contemporaries and rumbas (and what will no doubt be Alfonso’s show-stopping jazz) and when compared to the older contestants’ stories. And since they have samba, that means it most likely will be a happy year/story.
@Courtney — as if I couldn’t be any more in love with him!
@Vogue, Sorry that I have to correct one point. The Chandelier dance wasn’t choreographed by Allison. It was the choreographer of the original video Ryan Heffington.
I loved that performance. It really was pure brilliance.
My guesses for scores:
Jonathan and Allison: 36 (9,9,9,9)
Betsey and Tony: 30 (8,8,7,7)
Janel and Val: 36 (9,9,9,9)
Lea and Artem: 36 (9,9,9,9)
Michael and Emma: 26 (7,6,6,7)
Tommy and Peta: 32 (8,8,8,8)
Antonio and Cheryl: 32 (8,8,8,8)
Betanny and Derek: 37 (9,9,9,10)
Sadie and Mark: 36 (9,9,9,9)
Alfonso and Witney: 40 (10,10,10,10)
I actually think Beth will do well in the Rumba. Derek seems to choreograph good ones and the one he did with Shawn was sexy and sweet but age appropriate as well. Plus if they have a good song, that’ll help too. This will be Beth’s first slow dance so it’ll be cool to see how she does with them. She’s got three pretty upbeat dances so far so this one will be different.
Ok, I’ll play too….
Jonathan and Allison: 36 (9,9,9,9)
Betsey and Tony: 30 (8,7,7,7)
Janel and Val: 36 (9,9,10,10)
Lea and Artem: 36 (9,9,9,8)
Michael and Emma: 26 (7,6,6,7)
Tommy and Peta: 32 (8,8,8,8)
Antonio and Cheryl: 32 (8,8,8,9)
Betanny and Derek: 37 (9,9,10,10)
Sadie and Mark: 36 (9,9,10,10)
Alfonso and Witney: 40 (10,10,10,10)
Thanks Lana, I thought she said in an interview she helped and they had to put it together quickly.
In my opinion, what Bethany needs now is not to excel technically with her dances, but to show some more personality. And I strongly doubt that the rumba will be a dance with which she can do that. I sincerely hope that she’s able to come out of her shell a little bit, because I think she’s going to need it to stay in the competition. I also think that *Bethany* was screwed by her score — to get extremely high scores but to come across as a bit reserved is not a formula for success on the show. That said, obviously Derek is a pro (no pun intended) at bringing the beat out of his celebs, and I’m sure he’ll find a way to choreograph an age appropriate rumba that Bethany can connect to.
@cris- allison is similar to tyne (bill nye’s partner) from a few seasons ago. her main forte wasn’t ballroom and received very little training in it but she did well choreography wise.
if betsey makes it to switch up week, i hope the producers would consider pairing her up w/ derek since every season the fans complain that he gets the “young, talented one” and tony gets the “well aged female”. i have a feeling this season’s switch is going to be rigged like last season.
Please. After writing about this show for I don’t know how many seasons, giving Derek Betsey in the switch won’t change any of that stupid assed talk. He took a woman with no feet to the finale, fer christ’s sake. People excused that by saying she was “fit”. :::rolls eyes:::
I’m sure they’re doing it on purpose, Maddie. Your guess is as good as mine as to WHY. Can’t imagine they are eager to lose either of them, as they bring the younger demo.
Derek’s rumba with Shawn was beautiful, fantastic – but I seem to recall the judges making me want to cut a bitch.
Honestly, the upcoming switchup is going to be very interesting if there is another surprise elimination like Randy’s.
Shawn’s rumba – Bruno loved, Carrie Ann liked it except she took off for a “lift” – when Shawn jumped into Derek’s arms, and Len did not like it as he felt it did not have enough hip action, he felt it was too jerky – LMAO. I don’t think that Beth is as good a dancer as Shawn as Shawn was very graceful with her gymnastics experience, but I believe in both Derek and Beth and believe Derek will choreograph something special for Beth.
Vogue, agree with your paddle predictions. They’ll pay last week forward to Alphonso with a 40 and at least 2 10s for Sadie. They got so blatantly screwed Monday night, TPTB will “work it out.”
I hope Mark has paid attention to the younger celebs who have been on the show to share their “personal story week.” Sadie’s a 17 year old charmer. Her bucket of life experiences isn’t quite as full as many of the other celebs. Therefore, I hope Mark continues to keep it real and age appropriate with her. When I was 17 my most memorable thing would have been ye olde driver’s license back in the day when you took a pencil-and-paper test!
Pretty sure Mikey will pick 2001 as his “most memorable year” with finally landing a solid Cup ride with top notch team (DEI) as well as both winning the Daytona 500 and losing his good friend Dale Earnhardt Sr in a matter of moments … In fact, that’s what his book “In the Blink of an Eye” was basically all about … Though, I’m not sure how the quickstep will fit into all of that …
I honestly wish they’d stop overscoring the much younger “stars” … NASCAR Nation must be putting in a LOT of votes & the judges think they have to overcompansate for it … There are a LOT of NASCAR fans watching & voting this season that have never done so …
Thanks Dancewithyou. …and I agree about Mark. He just needs to take one week at a time and give it all they’ve got. I hope they make the finals.
I was going to do a super long post about what I thought of each couples dance but CC pretty much covered everything I was going t say in post #18 hahaha.
Of all the dances I have the highest expectations for Alfonso and Jonathan and I hope they don’t disappoint. I think Sadie will have a resurgence but not as much as Alfonso probably will. Interestingly enough Zendaya also had a Samba during personal story week and I think her performance held up against the others even though there wasn’t an “emotional” story behind it being she was only 16 at the time, but then again Zendaya and Sadie are different types of performers. Still think she’ll do well with it as long as Mark approaches it the right way.
I also agree with Penny that Bethany is going to have to start to show more of her personality now that we are really starting to get into the competition. I think she’s bubbly during the interviews with Erin but what I’m reading from other people on DWTS boards is that they feel she’s a bit stand-offish and can’t relate to her. I think if people took her back story in more they would realize this world is completely out of her comfort zone. I’m assuming she’ll talk about that this week so hopefully that will help.
I may be bias because i love Janet & love will never do without you, but i agree with courtney, i think its an excellent samba song. the problem is that its great for someone who is fluid, rhythmical, and has a natural groove about them that would allow them to really get in and really play around with the funkiness of the beat i.e. alfonso.
Its unfortunate that i dont think Antonio has any of those qualities, because i feel you could do a cool samba to that song. who knows, maybe he will surprise…or not
I saw Jonathan tweeted that he was doing Samba? I hope he has contemporary though so people can see Allison’s strongest asset
People, just because we don’t have a song posted doesn’t mean we don’t know what the song is. We very well could and we just aren’t sharing it yet for a variety of reasons.
I really don’t get it – what’s everyone’s problem with Bethany’s personality? Is she likeable? Yes, she is. At least to me. And that’s enough for me. What else do you want from her? I really don’t get it. Is Janel’s personality stronger than hers? Or Lea’s? I don’t think so…
Damn 🙁 I was really hoping Jonathan had Contemporary. It could have been his “breakout dance”. I don’t see his Samba being all that great tbh. Oh boyyy…. Good luck to him.
A fan on twitter asked Janel what her favorite song at the moment was and she responded with Lay Me Down by Sam Smith. Could this be one of the possibilities for her song choice?
Woah Jonathan has samba now?
@cris: no, he has contemporary next week
He switched to samba?! Really…..that sucks
Yeah, we made a mistake. It happens. But now that we have the right into – I understand why he switched to samba. It’ll all make sense soon, promise 🙂
We’re pretty sure on Janel’s song – plus, I’m not sure the subject matter of “Lay Me Down” is necessarily show-appropriate…sure, they’ve had songs with questionable lyrics before, but with a song like “Lay Me Down”, with all of the instruments stripped down, it kinda leaves the lyrics laid bare for all to really hear…and given her image, would it really be best to tell a “most memorable year” story that’s basically about “doing the do”? 😛
Now I’m just curious about what Janel’s story is. Is it about her boyfriend? An ex? Her showmance with Val (lol)? Hmmmmm. We shall see.
I’m wondering if Artem is good at contemporaries. I don’t know about his dance record so has he even done contemporary dancing before? Then again, Tony is very ballroom and he choreographed a pretty ok-ish contemporary for Betsey.
Here are my score predictions:
Jonathan & Allison: 32 (8-8-8-8)
Tommy & Peta: 28 (7-7-7-7)
Betsey & Tony: 29 (7-7-7-8)
Bethany & Derek: 36 (9-9-9-9)
Janel & Val: 39 (10-9-10-10)
Alfonso & Witney: 40 (10-10-10-10)
Sadie & Mark: 36 (9-9-9-9)
Antonio & Cheryl: 30 (7-7-8-8)
Lea & Artem: 35 (9-8-9-9)
Michael & Emma: 27 (7-6-7-7)
Janel and Val will probably be super showmancy. Ugh
I hope Betsey and Tommy do good, but I wonder why anyone would ever give a jive to people that are over 70. I still think they’ll do good, but I think the jive will take it’s toll on them.
I agree with Tamara #49, I haven’t noticed bethany being in any kind of “shell”. I think she’s exhibited a bubbly and confident personality. Not to mention maturity beyond her years.
I am having so much trouble getting excited about Janel and Val…I am a fan of Val and think he is an amazing dancer and choreographer (he is the one I normally root for every season and now I don’t even vote for them), but Janel just irks me for some reason. I am elated to see who Val gets in the switch up because in my opinion anyone will be better than Janel.
Sadie will have the best Samba in my opinion this week! She is so fun to watch and she seems so genuine! Little nervous about Betsey, Tommy, and Michael’s dances this week. I am really rooting for all three of them (and Sadie) this season, but the quickstep is SO challenging that I am afraid for Michael. I hope he comes out and wows us though!
With Bethany and Janel having the same dance 4 weeks in a row, I won’t be surprise if tptb will switch Bethany to Val and Janel to Derek during switch-up week.
Next week Carrie Ann will fall off her chair during Vajanel’s rumba and Bruno will be up on the judges table and I will try not to throw up lol…
Aw crud my 2nd favorite couple has my least favorite dance. I’m definitely looking forward to Alfonso & Witney’s jazz. I think it’ll bring the house down. Bethany & Janel should stop doing the same dance styles. It’s too repetitive. It reminds of when Amy & Meryl did the same dances the first two weeks. This has gone on to week 4 though! Think all of the people doing Samba will do pretty well. Curious to see how Michael handles the Quickstep. Really hoping he hangs on for one (maybe 2. How many more till the switch up?) more week at least so Emma can pair up with Jonathan. The older contestants doing the jive this week is interesting and could be fun.
Dang. That sucks. I was really looking forward to beast Holker choreographing a killer contemp piece with Jonathan as a tribute to his dad. It would have been both touching and well danced. Picking a samba instead? Meh. Disappointed.
I’m kinda relieved that Allison doesn’t have to choreograph the contemporary to “Dance with my father again” although it would fit perfectly to Jonathan’s story, in my opinion it is just not a good song for a contemporary. I just expect something spectacular from Allison’s contemporary since it is her forte.
@lana, OOOOOOOH! That’s a tricky thing! Yes, contemporary may be Allison’s forte, and can choreograph some A-MAY-ZING dances, BUT! Saying that you expect a spectacular contemporary dance from Jonathan and Allison gives her the same problem Derek has, especially last week.
“SINGING IN THE RAIN!” “DEREK HOUGH!” “OMG!!!! THIS IS GOING TO BE THEEEEEEEEE BEST DANCE!” The expectations were VERY high for Derek because, yes, he CAN choreograph an absolutely drop-dead spectacular to that song. And many people wanted and expected it. Instead, he choreographed a wonderful, breathtaking dance streamlined to the abilities of his injured celebrity partner, and both danced it fabulously, but still, there are LOTS of people who feel “let down” because he didn’t choreograph this song for what HE can do.
I think Allison is trying to follow Derek’s path, for the most part, and creating dances that fit her partner, and his abilities. Unfortunately, it means that it could leave people thinking she’s not “doing her best” if one of her dances created for Jonathan isn’t as spectacular as they expect.
I kind of wish Mandy Moore didn’t choreograph all of the opening numbers, so we can have OUR PROS can show what they can create when they can dance “full out.”
As much as you guys get right, one teeny mistake is like a tiny drop in a vast ocean.
With Allison’s “Fetch” reference I’m wondering of they have a Mean Girls song or theme.
Since I live for spoilers, can you spoil us with some future theme weeks?
We’ve had more Latin than Standard again this season and I’m curious to see how the remaining dances left to do will fit into their themes.
Plus, for the love of God, more Paso!
Oh I know someone who’s very happy about Sadie and Mark’s Samba song (looking at you Vogue haha) .
Thanks for the song spoilers! I’m liking a lot of these songs. Now I’m trying to see if I can figure out what they could possibly mean for each contestant in terms of their most memorable year. Hmmmm.
OMG! Heidi called it with Derek’s song once again! Her Derek radar is spot on as always. I can’t wait to see how Derek and Bethany’s dance to TRY!
And yay, I am so excited about Sadie and Mark dancing to Pharrell’s HUNTER too!!! That is my second song wish come true. Thank you TPTB! I can’t wait to see how they do it being the lyrics are controversial. But, wow, what a great dance song.
I love “Love Will Keep Us Together” by Captain & Tennille too. What a fun flashback!
Yeeeeah, My mom uses this word once in a while that I just love “irk” meaning?? pisses you off.
It really IRKS me that TPTB are pitting Janel(an ACTRESS with tons of dance experience) against Bethany. I guess it’s to pit Val and Derek against one another all season and then because Derek has (deservedly)won so many times at the end they can use the “Bethanys not emoting enough-not connecting” or some excuse they can pull out to give Val his win at the end and not give Derek another MBT. Similar to lastseason (putting Meryl against Amy-shameful). I just hope Bethany can do what Amy did and be so unexpectedly good she goes all the way to the end as Amy did. I’m less hopeful about that this time tho cause her ankle, for one, is a big question mark for me.
Probably a really unpopular opinion but I just don’t enjoy Alfonso just like I didn’t enjoy Corbin. I like them but there’s experience and then theres EXPERIENCE-to me there is just nothing to see or be surprised by. The cute really old people thing makes me queasy after a couple of dances and Micheal is no Bill Engvall.
I had a feeling Jonathan would be dancing to Milkshake! That should be a fun one. The only better song would have been him having jazz and dancing to Jingle Bell Rock like the plastics did. ha
“Milkshake” ought to be fun, but I was actually kinda hoping for “Pass that Dutch” from Mean Girls.
“Bethany and Janel should stop”??? You make it sound like they have a choice.
@PrincessHeidi- I was more blaming the producers. I know that’s it’s not their fault. I just didn’t word that sentence very well.
I’m kinda happy he has “Milkshake” just soley based on three things:
1)I like to read the comments on the facebook page when people find songs/costuming/choreography inappropriate (I am basically that meme that says “I just came here for the comments” when it comes to Facebook lol).
2)It’s a fun song.
3)I wanted to see Allison do a samba if this is his last dance, he could go out on a high.
[…] in a phone call to get a female artist to perform her song with he and Bethany for week 4. Well, now that we know their song is P!nk’s “Try”, do you think he was successful at getting P!nk to […]
Aww Flashbacks with Love will keep us Together. I think I still know a lot of the words. lol – showing my age.
I cant wait to see Alfonso and Witneys Jazz!! So excited!!Also Jonathans samba just being a big fan of the movie Mean Girls!
It will be intersting to see how people respond to Sadies song. Everyones well aware of what her family does but now that shes straight up dancing to a song about hunting. I think this could turn people against her and she had a lot of fan support too.
@PJ – Yeah, I hear ya! I think that song played on the radio for months and months. It was a HUGE hit.
@kelly a – I’m super excited to see Alfonso and Witney’s jazz as well. But the bigger question is, if Len is back is he ready and willing to dust off his 10 paddle.
Wonder what’s the deal with change of Jonathan’s dance/song. Though I am looking forward to Lea’s contemporary to Dance With My Father. I think she will shine this week.
@Juliana, it’s not that Jonathan’s song and dance got changed, but the tea leaves weren’t completely clear, and were accidentally read as Jonathan and Allison doing a contemporary to Dance With My Father instead of Lea and Artem.
Well, Lori, I don’t think it will be as spectacular as the contemporaries on SYTYCD, but better than those from the past from other pros (except Derek’s ;-)). And I think that Jonathan could handle the contemporary quite well. A lot of the male celebrities did since it has any specific rules like the latin and ballroom dances. It is free and expressive. Jonathan is an actor so I have high hopes. I just hope they’ll get the chance to do contemporary.
And as for Derek’s Singing In The Rain choreography, I thought it was really good and Bethany handled it really well. Sure he could’ve done much more complicated moves with let’s say Nicole or Shawn but this is the genius of his creativity, he tailors the dances for his partners and it always looks flawless and easy.
With the press release that Colbie Caillat is performing, is there a chance that the “Try” Bethany and Derek are performing to is her song Try and not Pink’s? I love both songs, but with Derek saying he made a call to get a singer to perform and now news that Colbie is performing and with the song title being the same, it’s just curious.
*sigh* Yeah, it is, Michelle – let me see if I can get Heidi or Vogue to change the post…I’m not allowed to touch it because the iTunes links disappear when I do 😛
I am one hot ass mess this week.
[…] Derek and Bethany are reportedly dancing to “Try” by Pink – Awesome. And Vogue will tell you that I guessed it based on some intel we had earlier in the week. ETA: Okay, now I’m hearing that it’s the Colbie Caillat version of the song, not the Pink version. Courtney blames herself and says she’s a hot mess. If you want to see what ALL the couples are dancing to, visit PureDWTS. […]
I am so happy that Sadie & Mark are dancing to Hunter. Should be a really fun dance!!!
omg. I just listened to Colbie Caillat’s “Try” and my goodness it is a beautiful song. Such powerful lyrics… And a lot of truth in them as well.
I can definitely see how this song relates to what Bethany went through when she was getting bullied. I cannot wait to see her and Derek Rumba to this. I think it’s gonna be VERY special.
Oh that’s a great song Try by Colbie Caillat, I’m sure that I will cry… This song is so emotional. This will be a great rumba in a way that not need to be sexy. Derek will make Bethany shine
Wow I really think this will Bethany’s week, whether she performs the best technical dance or not. I think her and Derek will tell a powerful story through this dance and for the people that are saying that can’t “connect” to her, finally will. Really looking forward to this dance, I will probably cry too!
I love “Love will keep us Together” as well, but a jive? I won’t be so quick to dismiss, but Tony isn’t necessarily one of my favorite choreographers, so I’ll just keep it at “Hmm…”
Yes, I would have loved “Pass that Dutch” too! Oh, I always remember ‘Mean Girls’ with that song. I love that movie! But then again, that image of the little girl mimicking the Milkshake video is burned in my mind. LOL.
That would be cool to get Colbie Caillat to sing! She’s been on the back of my wish list for DWTS too, so here’s hoping. 🙂
When i heard that Colbie was performing on the show i knew that B and D were dancing to “Try” because in an interview D said that they wanted to have a performer during their dance but now that i read that the had the same song but different artist i wonder what happened…
I had never heard “Milkshake” before seeing it in this post (or, if I have, I blotted it from memory). I have to say it’s, well, an *interesting* song. (It’s not bad, but I’m not paying to download it on iTunes. 🙂 ) That said, I can kinda feel the samba beat when I listen to it.
I’m not saying this is what happened, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we find out that his dad told him to pick 2004.
I think Derek had went to see Gavin DeGraw (and Colbie was part of his show at the time) with Karina, Julianne, and Cheryl perhaps. I remember Karina’s pictures, so I was hoping it was Colbie’s “TRY” and not Pink’s song…so happy! It is a song every young girl should listen too.
Of course the Duck Girl is dancing to a song called “Hunter”. I rolled my eyes when I saw that.
Based on these spoilers, I guess the only dance I’ll check out is Alfonso’s. Sounds like it’ll be the most interesting and the most fun. With the way they threw out those (undeserved) 10s last week, they better toss some his way.
This raise your paddle crap is gonna be more of a mess than anything. Haters will have a field day with this, and it’s crappy that they’re gonna count this score.
Guys, I don’t think we’ll see a perfect 40 this week… this “new” viewers’ vote system will be used next week is almost the same they use here in Brazil on “Dança dos Famosos” (brazilian version of DwtS). here, is alowed for exemple, a viewers’ avarage like “8.4”… (so, it’s logical, milions of people will not give the same 10 to a couple)
Really don’t know if it will work properly on DwtS. At least, in Brazil viewers’ and judges’ scores are combined on the same week… people can vote on the internet and texting on the phone… I’m curious to see what happens on US… (and the buzz if janel got an 0.1 higher than bethany… lol)
Btw, there’s a kind of “negative votes”, when a group of fans vote to down the avarage of a couple they don’t like…
I have to confess I’m not a big fan of Dança dos Famosos – preffer DwtS US, DwtS AU, SCD and even Bailando (argentine version) – but I’m pretty sure here they scores from 6 to 10. If in US they allow the viewers to vote from 1, think this can be a disaster… If a group of crazy fans vote against a couple scoring him just 1, and only 10 for the one it preffer, and if this group is really really big, maybe – just maybe – the avarage can down 1, 2, 3 points… (We’ve seen this in Brazil… not so clearly on Dança dos Famosos, but on Dança no Gelo – Dancing on Ice – that used the same vote system…)
Let’s wait and see… =]
i think Alison will do amazing job in this week she is master in contemporary dance. they can get highest score. this is my prediction.
I think this vote could be especially bad for Bethany and perhaps Sadie-The haters will make a point to score them low and others high and in Beths case in particular not sure how many of her faithful followers actually vote or can use FB ( all people inmy fam who are parents allow no FB til over 16 yrs old.
And too, I’m not a fan of rumba being anything but rumba. A dance of love can be anything from “puppy love to somthg really passionate” but it is rumba. I think you can “dedicate” a dance like Contemporary to a theme but otherwise, not so much. So Janel who Beth is always put up against as a comparison, and Val will pour on all the touchy, feely, we are fallin in true love” stuff and get praised for all the connections etc and Beth will probably get slammed. JMO after watching this show for years and I truly hope Derek will find another genius force so I am TOTALLY wrong about this feeling. LOL
Of course there will be fans who vote down Bethany – Val fans make their lives about trying to bring down Derek in any way they can because they are SO insecure in their favorite. What they don’t realize is that if bethany goes before Janel and gets a lower than expected fan vote, the shit will hit the fan big time when Janel dances. And Bethany and Derek have more fans than Val and Janel.
How do I know this?? I’ve looked at the aggregate twitter votes for the switch up – total votes for Janel with any male pro compared with the other ladies with any male pro and she is in DEAD LAST. This does not mean that Bethany will win (she’s actually not in first place, but close), but it doesn’t speak well for the size of her fanbase.
In any case, this fan vote thing won’t have that big of an impact in who goes home, I don’t think. I think that most of the better dancers will score around an 8.2 and the lower tier may get around a 7.2. Why do I think this? Well, combine a bunch of people voting down a given couple with even more people giving their favorite a 10 and I guestimate that you end up around an 8.2. Many people won’t bother to vote on those they don’t care about, actually, so the worse dancers might actually score BETTER than the Janels, Bethanys and Sadies of the group. It will be very interesting to see from a math nerd stand point. It might also be an indication of whether or not Bethany’s massive fanbase is actually voting. You only have 2 minutes and 15 seconds, so you can’t do a ton of spamming.
raine, you’re naive if you think that haters will only score Beth down. And Beth has way more fans than Janel does. Besides all that, one lone score out of four is not likely to make a huge impact. Plus, the voting is on ABC.com, not facebook. Regular voting doesn’t have to be done on facebook either.
After all these seasons, it’s time to stop worrying about Derek. Seriously. The man rarely fails. Hell, if he goes out next week, he still retains his number 1 rank – it will be nearly impossible to surpass that in the time this show likely has left on the air.
Here’s a thought: Can’t we all just vote fairly based on how the couple dances and not get personal feelings involved? What a concept. I for one am a Val fan and I plan to take this seriously and have fun with it by scoring everyone fairly. I still respect the talent Derek and all the other pros have and no one deserves a low ball score no matter what you feel about their fan base.
I agree. Im hopeful that the people who are going to try to lowball a couple are going to be few and far in between. Most of the Val fans I follow arent worried about trying to screw someone over, heck they havent even been voting for the switchup. I’ve only been voting to see Val with Bestsey or Tommy because i think both of those would be awesome.
chelle, who are you trying to convince of that?? I have DWTS columns on my tweetdeck and there are some SERIOUS Val/Maks fans spamming.
PH/other mods – I was going to ask if you were tracking the switch-up votes like you did last season. From comments #98 and #102, it seems you are – will we be getting any reveals on what the pairings are likely to be (or *should* be, if TPTB don’t monkey around as they did last time…)?
Who? outside of 1 maks fan i havent really seen any val fans spamming. In fact most of the spamming seems to be coming from a only a handful of accounts.
a)1 previous derek/amy fan who really wants derek/lea, bethany/mark, and as collateral damage sadie/tony, betsey/val
b) some mark/sadie fan who really doesnt want sadie with tony and therefore is spamming Val/sadie
c) some person who keeps tweeting about mike/peta and cheryl and somebody
those 3 and their various dummy accounts are the only ones doing the heavy lifting
Question for the Mods: As a longtime fan of show, I thought that couples submitted in beginning of season a list of songs they wanted. Sometimes they got them, sometimes not, right? It seems to me that sometimes the songs they do get are “slanted” to fit the “role” of the couple DWTS has decided for them, i.e. showmance, etc. What’s the deal? Thanks in advance.
Yes, Butterfly, I believe we’re going to post something tomorrow night. 🙂 Provided that me and Courtney can stop enjoying the nice weather.
I’m reallye xcited for Jonathan and Alfonso. Alfonso’s obviously gonna own everyone with the Carlton and if he doesn’t get higher than the two jazzes last week then something is very wrong with the show. I still want Jonathan to do a contemporary at some point in the show, but meanwhile I’m glad he gets to do a Mean Girls dance. I think Lea could do well too as long as Artem gives good choreography.
I’m not too sure about Betsey’s jive song, it seems a little slow and not bouncy enough. And I don’t trust Tony to be able to make the best of it. He can give good routines given the right song, but this just isn’t the right song IMO.
Hate to say it, but the B&D vs V&J thing so just so…ugh. I predict the judges (especially CAI) will go gaga over V&J’s but say B&D were not sexy enough. Come on, Bethany’s only 18 and Janel’s already shown she is perfectly capable of pulling the romance factor. Probably like S15 Week 5 again. Gilles and Peta against Shawn and Derek. I think everyone’s made a good point about Derek’s potential for Bethany this week. Only way I can see her slipping up is if slow dances just aren’t her thing. She’s not my favourite contestant, but I find her far more likeable than Janel plus she’s proven to be a fair dancer.
Predicted rankings for this week:
1. Alfonso
2. Janel (but only because of pimping)**
3. Sadie and Bethany tie
5. Lea
6. Jonathan
7. Tommy
8. Michael
9. Antonio
10. Betsey
**pimping might even put her above Alfonso. sigh.
Um, Elena, you DO realize, right, that Alfonso *can’t* get higher than either Bethany or Janel – there isn’t an 11 paddle after all. In fact, due to the public vote, he’s almost certain to get lower because every person in the viewing audience is unlikely to give him a ten whether he deserves it or not. I agree with the rest of your comments though, particularly about Janel getting pimped.
PH, can you please explain this to me? I don’t quite get what you mean, but I have a feeling that this could be important. Plus, don’t you think TPTB could thing of this and have Janel go before Beth?
Ahh i’m so excited to see Alfonso’s jazz!! I’m excited to see everyone’s dance actually, haha. I just wish they would stop giving Janel and Bethany the same dance styles like it’s week four. People keep comparing them and saying one is better than the other and it’s killing me. They both had different jazz styles with two amazing pro dancers with very different techniques. You can’t compare Val and Derek.. they are both amazing in their own ways at choreographing routines. Sorry for my ranting haha.
I’m with you, Diane. I like both of them and it’s frustrating that the show seems to be pitting Janel and Beth against each other.
What I mean is, that if Beth’s fans feel she was unfairly scored, they could certainly do the same to Janel and they are greater in number. It’s just a bad idea to vote someone down out of spite – Karma will get you.
Yeah, I just listened to Colbie Caillat’s song Try and that’s the PERFECT song for Bethany to use for My Most Memorable Year week. If THAT doesn’t get the viewer’s to connect with her then I don’t know WHAT will? It fits her story to a T! So cool that Derek called Colbie to get her to perform on the show!
@Kelly I so agree.. I want to see what Afterbuzz is gonna say about not connecting to her after her performance tonight. They’ll probably find something to nitpick.
I love the song that Derek and Bethany are dancing to… And this could the breakthrough week for Bethany. The problem being, that usually by week 3 or 4 most of us have already chosen our favorite.
It’ll be interesting to see how the voting works. I wonder if the technology is such that it’ll only allow one vote per IP address. [I’m not getting my hopes up, though.]
How is dancing 1st usually thought of? I know going 2nd or 3rd is the kiss of death as you are all but forgotten by the end of the night but is going 1st a little bit better as you “kick off” the show? In her blog post Janel basically made it sound like their theme is love and something about moving to LA so not sure how much of story she’ll actually have. I guess I’m just surprised they aren’t later in the show after last week. Also wonder if going earlier in the show will help or hurt celebs as far as the fan scoring situation.
I wonder if going 1st will be a benefit or a deterrent with the new online voting?
@Sandy I agree. I think this will be a breakthrough week for Beth although last week was really good too. I think she will wow more of the average viewers who will vote for Her too.
Ahh, there you go. Janel and Val goes first so even some of their crazy fans underscoring Bethany, the Motavators can’t do much about it. Very smart tptb.
I am confident that Bethany’s Motavators and other regular fans will be enough to get her a decent score. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.
I mean, I’m happy Janel and Val are going first mainly because they can just get their dance over with and I don’t have to worry about seeing them again for the rest of the night. Might end up forgetting about their dance when the night is over so that’s great! And usually, this early in the season, the first dance doesn’t get such amazing scores from the judges so if Julianne and Carrie Ann want to go ahead and give them an 8, that would be great!
So wait, quick question:
Will that page be available to us 30 minutes before the show starts? Because every time I click on the link, it just gives me the instructions and description on how this whole thing is working.
And one of the bullet points says “You must be logged into your Facebook account to score.” but I don’t see an option anywhere on the Facebook page.
I feel like I’m over thinking this.
So does the Raise Your Paddle thing only work for people in the States?
For the viewer vote to stay, and the judges scores, going first has NOT been great for the past couple seasons. But for the viewer score vote? LUUUUCKKY. Most fans don’t waste the time and energy on negativity and nasty that the C-bros fans seem to spend (although each fan base has a few bad apples I’m sure), so she’ll likely get a decent score.
I think the facebook thing is so you can share your vote (you’re supposedly not required to though). The way it sounds, the page may be self updating as the show goes along.
JJ – yes, only for people in the states and the eastern and central time zones. We already tested the “in the states thing” and a couple fans in the Philippines get a page that says “You must be in the US to vote” when they go to that page. Yes, they were logged in as if they were going to vote for the couple to stay, which they can do, so that tells me that abc must be blocking this by IP address.
Pleased to see that the vile, overmarked, showmancing Vajanel are up first, I can tune in a bit later tonight.
Don’t yet have a Facebook account but shall be making one soon so I can give Derek a well deserved 10.
Just read a tweet by @abcgeorge he says Bethany is coming up 4th.
Tommy and peta are dancing 8th confirmed by peta in insta comments
I’m not a huge fan of this Raise the Paddle voting crap. Watch Janel and Bethany get 10s regardless of how well they did while poor Antonio or Betsey is going to get an 8. Ofcourse there’s nothing wrong with an 8 but its going to let people overscore/underscore. And what are the odds it’s going to be rigged?
Haha of course Alfonso is going last! 😛 That should be an awesome ending to the show! Wish they wouldn’t get too predictable with the orser though. Still exciting though!! 26 minutes to go!
For reasons too many to enumerate…but illustrated over and over again by your responses to this post…I have to say….
I love you guys….Courtney, Princess Heidi, Voguerista, and Lori! You girls ROCK!
Is anyone else having problems logging in to the Raise Your Paddle page?
I don’t even know where it is. I’m just on the ABC page and waiting.
Courtney – I hit refresh…and then the screen changed…had to “log in” with Facebook – but not ON Facebook!
