Show Details For DWTS19 Week 5: Jessie J To Guest Judge, All Of The Dance Styles Announced
Broadway World has released show details for Dancing With The Stars Season 19 Week 5. You can read on the Switch up pairings and all of their dance styles below. Also note how JESSIE J will be a guest judge as well as performing.
America’s votes are in and the nine remaining celebrities will switch professional dance partners on MONDAY, OCTOBER 13 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on “Dancing with the Stars.” International pop superstar JESSIE J will guest judge alongside Julianne Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli in addition to kicking-off the night with a medley of her hit songs “Bang Bang” and “Burnin’ Up” featuring the Pros. For the first time this season couples will dance to new styles of dance including Hip-Hop, Burlesque, and Flamenco among others. Celebrities will perform one routine with their “switch up” partner and return to their original dance partners the following week.
The “Switch Up” pairings and styles of dance are:
Jonathan Bennett and Peta Murgatroyd dancing the Jitterbug
Tommy Chong and Emma Slater dancing the Mambo
Bethany Mota and Mark Ballas dancing Hip-Hop
Janel Parrish and Artem Chigvintsev dancing Burlesque
Alfonso Ribeiro and Cheryl Burke dancing Flamenco
Sadie Robertson and Derek Hough dancing the Charleston
Antonio Sabato Jr. and Allison Holker dancing Bollywood
Lea Thompson and Val Chmerkovskiy dancing Broadway
Michael Waltrip and Witney Carson dancing Disco
More at Broadway World.
Wow! This is going to be one intersesting night! 😯
I think Bollywood may be Antonio’s death warrant on this show. And I put $10 on it that Janel gets rave reviews for basically rolling around the stage in a bedazzled corset. :::roll:::
Some of these dance styles are really not well matched with the celeb, and others feel like repeats of something the celeb has already done. Tommy and mambo – pretty much doing salsa twice. Janel and burlesque – like giving her jazz again. I guess they want these two to stick around?
Antonio and Bollywood? Good lord. Take pretty much the stiffest guy in the competition, with the least personality, and ask him to do Bollywood, which can be incredibly intricate, and doesn’t look good on someone who’s stiff, and *needs* wholehearted enthusiasm and joy when you dance it to really pull it off…probably will be a trainwreck.
However, I expect Allison will choreograph a better Bollywood than Peta did, since Allison has at least danced it before.
Also, while I think Mark can choreograph a decent hip hop, I don’t feel the dance fits Bethany well, nor is it likely to really connect with the average viewer. I guess it will depend on the music, because I can’t see Bethany getting all gangster, but I think she could handle a lyrical type hip hop well.
Michael and disco will be fun, and will probably help keep him around. Sadie and Derek and Charleston will be great. I think Jonathan is also getting a boost by having jitterbug – it matches his energy, and he did well with the jive. Alfonso and flamenco – also going to be good. Lea and Broadway should be good – she can act – but I really have no desire to see a Broadway choreographed by Val, if the jazz he did with Janel is any indication; if you take away the troupe and the extras, the actual dancing in that routine was kind of meh.
Interesting mix of dance styles!
Most of them seem to fit the celebs really well so I’m excited to see this.
Sadie doing charleston will be super cute!
For the first time this season I’m a little worried for Alfonso though. But I think Cheryl is the right partner for him for this dance.
Considering the dance styles, it doesn’t seem very fair for some couples. Broadway and burlesque will allow Val and Artem to do big production numbers and I’m not sure if hip hop or disco will be remembered at the end. I’m looking forward to the dances regarding of the pairings.
I’m really excited about the charleston. Amber and Derek’s is one of my favourite and Sadie is very expressive so I’m sure they will do something great. As for Beth and hip hop, I’m note sure it’s the perfect dance to see her opening herself to the public but Mark will probably do something fun with it.
Good thing with bollywood is that Allison will have to ask for someone to help her, so I’m looking forward to see if it’s gonna give her ideas for ballroom dances as well. Jonathan is full of energy so jitterbug seems to be right in his alley.
@ButterflyWhirl – Has Allison done Bollywood, though? She was on season 2 of SYTYCD, and they didn’t introduce Bollywood as a style until season 4…and every time she’s been back as an all-star, she’s either done contemporary or Broadway. Kathryn McCormick seems to be the all-star that handles Bollywood.
Well I thought they would be nice to Antonio but they clearly like watching him struggle. Bollyood might as well be the kiss of death for him. Michael and disco seems like a perfect match.
I’d switch some of these dance style up.
I wish Derek and Sadie had gotten Bollywood. Charleston bores the hell out of me. I know we’ve seen a Derek Bhangra before, but Bollywood is a sort of catch all term for mixing the various Indian classical dances styles with at least currently in Bollywood cinema a bit if hip hop. I want to see Derek do that!
Alfonso and Cheryl dancing Flamingo intrigues me. I have no doubt that he’ll be able to handle the fast and intricate footwork. I’m hoping for a hot and amazing dance from these two.
It would seem to me that the assigned dances suit the celebrity which probably bodes well. Since Alfonso can tap, I think he’ll be able to pull off Flamenco. It’ll be interesting to see how Cheryl choreographs this dance and how she’ll capitalize on Alfonso’s abilities. I have high hopes for Allison’s Bollywood choreo for Antonio, but I also hope that she’ll highlight her partner more. Charleston is perfect for Sadie. It’ll be fun to see her and Derek in this dance. I am glad Bethany has hip hop because she has some experience in this and Mark is one of the few pros who can choreo hip hop. To me, Michael = disco = fun. Tommy should do well with mambo since it’s a bit close to salsa (correct me if I’m wrong, mods). I’m iffy about burlesque. Isn’t there any other dance style? Thanks for this, Voguerista!
As I said on another post, giving Janel Burlesque is like giving her Jazz all over again. What the heck is up with that? Ugh. Of course they couldn’t give little Ms.”I only have a little dance experience” a dance like Charleston or Jitterbug because she wasn’t trained in those. No, no, no.. She gets Burlesque! And next week why don’t they give her Broadway. And the week after give her some Tap! -____-
I think Hip-Hop combined with Mark will be very good for Bethany. I think it’s a dance she might be more comfortable in and Mark as a partner couldn’t be better. If I know one thing is that he’ll really work on getting Bethany to SELL the dance. Should be very interesting.
Sadie and Derek doing a Charleston has me all kinds of excited! Charleston is a dance I wish they would permanently keep on this show (kinda like on Strictly) because I love it so much. One of my favorites! I’m sure Derek’s gonna kill it with Sadie!
Michael & Witney should be able to do a cute little Disco. I agree, Antonio and Allison doing Bollywood? That sounds troublesome. Hopefully Allison does the same thing Peta did when she had Bollywood and brings in some help for Antonio and herself.
I think Lea & Val are gonna be really good too. Broadway sounds like a lot of fun! And Tommy doing Mambo?! Yes please!! I am dying to see that one!
I worry about Alfonso and the Flamenco though. No denying the man can dance his butt off but hmmm… I just wonder if next week he might struggle. Especially after coming from an AMAZING dance like his Jazz and getting a 40. Pressure on him AND Cheryl. Also worried about Jonathan. The Jitterbug is so fast and frantic… he might get a bit too excited and mess up. Hopefully Peta REALLY pushes him to make his technique better.
Hey- one of my friends just told me that Allison did do a Bollywood number on the SYTYCD tour for her season. Doesn’t mean Antonio will grasp the style, just wanted to share the info with you all.
I’m not a big fan of the Charleston but Sadie will smash that. She’s absolutely perfect for that dance and Derek will get the best out of her. Lea and Janel will probably stand out big time as well. I have no idea about what Flamenco is. Jessie J is a decent coup to get as a guest judge, fair play to the producers for that. Thanks Voguerista!
Oh No !!!!!!!! Burlesque. We’ll for one she is NOT a patch on the Sexy Classy Dita Von Teese and Two what is this turning into Bailando por un Sueño (DWTS Argentina) what’s next strip and pole dance
Well Sadie and Charleston should be good. I see TONS of them as it is a standard dance over here in the UK
Alfonso and Flamenco confuses me as men don’t traditionally dance Flamenco
I wish they would allow young people to dance Disco as I would love to see a routine a la Dorianna Sanchez
I agree with previous regarding Beth and Hip Hop, Tommy and Mambo and Antonio and Bollywood.
Val and 2 Broadways in a row *strokes chin* *gives a side eye*
Jessie J will be good She was one of our Voice mentors and WILL WILL WILL criticise
@bridget
Yes,but it was during the season 7 tour where they had allstars on tour
I’m not entirely sure, Court. I thought Allison had done a Bollywood on SYTYCD as an All-Star, but I could be wrong. Now that I think about it, Kathryn does seem to get most of the Bollywood.
@nathan we have seen a young celeb dance disco – Sabrina did it during All-Stars 🙂
I think it’s pretty safe to say Sadie will get her first all 10’s next week, you can do no wrong with Derek doing the Charleston. Hip-hop sounds like the most forgetable dance out of all the others, so I don’t know how it’ll make Bethany stand out…Mark is an amazing dancer so I hope he’ll help her shine.
I just want to say I’m really excited to see Derek choreograph a Charleston again. Loved the one he did with Amber, though I’d like to see him choreograph to a song that doesn’t sound…hip-hop-y is the best way. lol
I think Beth will be great with Hip-Hop. Mark seems like he would know how to choreograph a good Hip-Hop routine.
I’m rolling my eyes at Janel having Burlesque…
I think Cheryl seems like the perfect partner for Alfonso to get if he’s dancing Flamenco. I don’t know why, but it seems like Cheryl would do a good job with that style and with Alfonso.
The pairings sound pretty good except for Whitney & Michael. I wish she would have gotten Tommy instead. Do you remember last season when she got Drew and called him “Pops”? So funny! But she did a really good job with him.
I am really disappointed in all these wierd dance styles. I have to sit through alot of this terrible stuff on So You Think You Can Dance. I really don’t want to see Burlesque, Disco or Hip Hop on DWTS. Very disappointing. I watch DWTS for Ballroom. I don’t think Val’s specialty is Broadway – its Ballroom. Last year, his tango with Meryl was fabulous and really pushed her. I wanted him to take Lea and do the same. Artem’s choreography on SCD in Britain was always so good – like American Smooth – now he has to do Burlesque? Very tacky.
Who the heck is Jessie J?
Why is janel getting pimped so much ? I feel shes not bringing in the votes like people predicted . Looking forward to sadies charleston and alfonsos flemenco .
Nathan, here in Argentina they have come to a new low by adding the Femme style, where men have to dance in high heels. Really weird, and most people hated it.
I can’t wait for switch-up week!
Thank you for posting the dances.
I have one dumb questions…what the heck is Burlesque? All I can think of is a big ostrich feather involved.
I feel for Alfonso. Flemenco doesn’t sound like an easy dance.
I think Antonio got the hardest dance.
I like Lea, but Broadway? Isn’t that Contemporary or what am I missing with these dance names?
#18 @Sandy- Good question! LOL I really skipped that part. I don’t like the guest judge aspect.
Sandy #18, she’s a very talented English singer (I love her voice) and was one of the judges on the Voice UK.
@Misty – Burlesque is kind of a sexier offshoot of jazz & broadway – think jazz/broadway meets striptease…sort of. Think feather boas, corsets, fishnet stockings, and heels. You’re on the right track with the feathers, too 🙂
While Alfonso might be able to take on the footwork of Flamenco, I think he will have a very difficult time approximating the “carriage” that is typically a factor in a Flamenco performance. Switching Alfonso and Antonio’s dances may well have given each a better shot. While the “Carlton samba” and the “Carlton jive” (my feeling about what we’ve seen) were more or less reasonable fusions, the thought of a “Carlton Flamenco” gives me great pause.
Love match-ups for Bethany and Sadie! I think Mark will choreograph a great hip-hop for Bethany, and we all know what Derek can do. For me, Janel just does not have it. I think this coming week will make me very nauseous watching her.
I think all of the women came away very nicely with styles the should do well with:
Sadie: Lindyhop fits sadie’s personality like a glove…it should be adorable, fun, & athletic just like her
Janel: she has some jazz experience & she’s got a feisty personality so that should lend itself to burlesque nicely
Lea: she like janel is a self-professed theatre girl which should put broadway fairly squarely in her wheelhouse
Bethany: hip hop should be good to her. Its one of the two styles she’s said she has some experience in & mark should really be able to pull showcase her personality with this one
I cant say the men were as lucky. I think antonio is screwed with bollywood & i fear for alfonso and flamenc (but i have faith). I think jonathan is the only male that got really lucky because i think a jitterbug with peta will really work for them. I think tommy & Michael will be serviceable with mambo & disco but i dont think the were given any favor like the women.
oops i meant charleston not lindy hop for sadie
OMG I love Jessie J!!!
This should be an interesting week…I have high hopes for Jonathan, he’s overdue for his “breakout” moment/week
I think it’s obvious who they are trying to “Ralph” in this LOL.
Facebook buzzing about Derek & Sadie…mostly positive with handful of “he always gets the talented one”….LMFAO because now apparently Sadie is a ringer. To be honest, I agree with the fan that had said he could have been paired with ANY female celeb because they are all good.
Correct me if I am wrong, but did Bethany say in one of her youtube videos that she actually competed in a dance competition and did hip hop?
Based on all the dances next week, I want week 6 to be strictly ballroom, no latin, no jazz or contemporary. I miss them. It’ll be good for the celebrities to do something different. Just foxtrots, quicksteps, waltz, v. waltz, and tango.
Is there any word on when Len will be back. I was hoping he’d be here every other week.
All the female celebs at this point are good to decent dancers so they’ll be fine I think.
I really want Alfonso to do well with a traditional flamenco, he does need to show his versatility.
I can already see Antonio butchering the Bollywood number, feel sorry for Allison.
On a side note, I want to see Derek do a full out Bollywood number, the one with Maria doesn’t count. I saw a video of Bethany dressed in Indian clothing and she looked so authentic. It would have been nice to see Derek-Beth do Bollywood.
For men not traditionally dancing Flamenco, Derek did a killer Flamenco with Kellie not too long ago and that was pretty darn traditional, from what I understand.
Lex, yea Beth said she did hip hop and jazz for a year and a half.
Well, if we’re to be subjected to Janel doing a burlesque number, thank god it’s not with Val.
I wonder how deep into storage Mark & Aly’s poles are. At this point I’m just waiting for them to make a return.
According to USMagazine, Jonathan & Peta are dancing to ‘Rock this Town’, and Joey Fatone will be doing lead vocals as he’ll be singing in the Ray Chew Band this week!
When she was *12* Lex. Not sure how advanced that could possibly be.
That Derek Flamenco is one of my favorite things to watch Derek dance. Up until then I thought he was cute in a puppy kind of way. After that Flamenco I was like “how you doin’ Derek!”.
Since Paso has some elements of Flamenco in it and I really like Cheryl’s Pasos, I’m expecting something pretty fantastic.
I’m still shaking my head about burlesque.
I’m actually glad that Jonathan got Peta – one thing he seems to struggle with is being comfortable with being “sexy”, and I actually thought that Peta was the perfect pro to help him out with that. Too bad they’re doing more of a goofy dance…still, maybe she can help him get more comfortable in his own skin.
If I remember correctly, Witney actually wanted Tommy, and Emma wanted Alfonso…don’t really know that any of the other female pros really expressed a strong desire to have a specific male celeb.
Since the core audience of dwts is middle aged women, I have a hard time seeing most of them getting into the whole fishnet stockings, strip-tease kind of thing. I don’t see getting Burlesque as a good thing. Also knowing Janel’s personality you know shes going to be over the top with the whole sexiness part of it.
Another song thing- saw Janel posted a video of her dancing with Artem on Instagram. May be wrong but the song they was dancing to sounded like ‘Mamma Knows Best’ – by Jessie J, the guest judge.
My bad, sounds like it’s ‘Show Me How You Burlesque’ by Christina Aguilera according to a RT from DWTSGossip.
The variation of the dances seems exciting. Glad everyone has something different that no one else has.
Burlesque does seem like an interesting dance choice, but of all the guys dancing to it, I’m glad it’s Artem. In a dream world, it’d be great to see all the male pros dance burlesque 😉
I think I’m most excited for the Mambo… And I really hope Emma/Tommy dance to Mambo No. 5 by Lou Bega because how perfect and what a great song.
Second most excited for would be Mark and Beth’s hip-hop. I’m still having trouble connecting to her and I hope hip-hop will help her jump out into my mind a little more.
Having danced Bollywood a bit when I was younger, I have to say I’m annoyed that they’re introducing that into this week again. When it happened during All-Stars with Gilles and Peta…Sorry to those who enjoyed that number, but there was no Bollywood technique that I could see. Very stiff, too sharp–even from the pro–and none of the grace and fluidity you’d expect from Bollywood.
Anyway, I hope that Allison puts something decent together. Also I agree with Courtney; Antonio + Bollywood does not equal being safe. :/
I don’t think anyone on this site enjoyed Gilles and Peta’s bollywood. It was a mess and it was horrible and an example of the judges not knowing what the hell they were talking about (or severely pimping Gilles) in scoring.
I don’t think getting burlesque is that great for Janel – she’ll be good at it, but there’s a huge risk of turning the voters off if they make it too sexy. Otherwise, it looks like the producers were kind to everyone and gave them all dances they should be good at – except Antonio, I wonder what he did to piss them off. 🙂
While Janel getting Burlesque may not seem like the fairest move, that style can be super sexy, so I really don’t mind that she has it the week she’s not with Val!
Buttercup, I wondered the same thing – that Burlesque from a young, beautiful woman isn’t really attracting their key demo. If they do a fun, avant-garde style I think it’d be to their benefit, but I don’t think they will and instead instill too much raunch, which seems to turn viewers off. Maybe Artem will surprise me though.
Antonio also probably got hosed. Poor Allison. I don’t feel for him, but I do empathize with her plight. She’s gone from a tough situation to a can’t-win one. I don’t see how this will make her look good.
I am really looking forward to Mark and Bethany – I think they’ll look great together, and with hip hop I think he can bring out a goofy side to her. Derek and Sadie will be undoubtedly great. I think Tommy and Michael will be good, and Lea and Val may be great if he can give us some of the choreography he is capable of doing.
I sure have missed having the mambo on the show. It sounds like it’s going to be a good show. Glad they used different styles for the most part.
This night is going to be a blast. I especially love the Flamenco and the Mambo!
I’m guessing lifts are allowed for all the dances?
The only one that might be a problem with lifts is the Disco with Michael and Witney. I just don’t see him being very good with lifts and I worry for Witney. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by SYTYCD where the Discos seem to be 80 percent lifts and 20 percent actual dancing. If Witney slows it down a bit and keeps it lift light than I think this could be a very entertaining dance.
And please show don’t put a giant blonde fro on Witney like you did on Sabrina when she did her Disco with Louis. Think more Farrah Fawcett.
Lots of “Derek an MARK always get the best partners” talk on the DWTS Facebook page too! SO tired of that argument. Had to throw in the Val has gotten 5 ringers in a ROW spiel (truth)!!
Gosh I wish TPTB would QUIT trying to MAKE Janel happen! She’s NOT going to happen!!! LOL
Joanna, I think you were right the first time. It sounds like Jesse J (in the Janel-Artem instagram).
Artem has used the song before for a foxtrot – and Len hated it. Lucky it’s Jesse J this week! 😉
Thank you…Vogue
I so appreciate all you moderators keeping us up-to-date on the latest happenings. I am home again after my trip to PA to my mother’s showing, services, etc. I did manage to watch some of the show, but have been viewing them again on y.t.
As for the switch-ups, I think they are matched fairly good, except I have concern about Lea. I just hope Val puts as much into their dance “Broadway” as he does with Janel, and not follow in his brother’s footsteps. She is one of my favorites.
I know Derek and Mark will put all their effort into their switched partner as always with Sadie doing “Charleston”; and, Bethany doing “Hip Hop”
And, I feel Artem will do the same with Lea and “Broadway.” I’m liking Artem’s work and he is genuinely nice to Lea.
Witney will whip up something pretty good for her and Michael with “Disco.”
It will be interesting to see what Cheryl cooks up for Alfonso. I think this will be a big “test” week for him with the “Flamenco.”
As for Janel, Artem will do a good choreo for her with “Burlesque”, but I doubt that I will feel a connection.
Peta has amazed me this season in a different way because of having a much order partner, and I will be looking forward to see what she does with Jonathan and the “Jitterbug.”
Emma is clever with the older comedians, so she should do pretty well with Tommy and the “Mambo.”
Michael is going to tower over Witney. Awkward!
I wish Emma had gotten one of the younger celebs…
I’ll be glad when this week is over and things are back to normal. Not a fan of the switchup week at all.
I don’t get the whole “Mark and Derek get the best partners” crap. All 4 women left are probably the best dancers on the show so whoever Mark and Derek ended up with they were guaranteed a great partner (unless Betsey was still around) If people think poor Val got saddled with the worst partner they are delusional. Val getting Lea is a gift. Even more so with them getting Broadway.
