Carrie Ann Inaba Writes About Switch-Up Week On Dancing With The Stars

Carrie Ann Inaba has written about Dancing With The Stars last night at Parade. She talks of how “change is hard”. She commended all the couples for handling the switch-up dances with “grace and dignity”. She also mentioned a few of the couples. Below is her take on Alfonso and Cheryl for one…

Now, let’s move on to Alfonso Ribeiro and Cheryl Burke who performed a really good flamenco. I didn’t get a chance to comment on their dance so I will do so now. It had incredible chemistry. I agree with Julianne there. They had a mature partnership, which seemed as though they were part of one. I commend them on that. I loved seeing Alfonso’s passion come out and the way he commanded the stage. My comments are quite specific. Flamenco is a proud dance. It is in some ways an act of defiance, an expression of a gypsy culture that is an emotional expression that is almost like a crying out to the Gods. When you dance the flamenco, you can be small in person but you must dance it larger than life. You must fill the room with your gestures and your soulful expression. Their dance was nicely choreographed, however, Alfonso didn’t expand outward. He didn’t fill the room with passion. It was a one-dimensional performance in this way. He needed to lift his torso more, and his arm movements needed to be more expansive to have more tension. There was however, one brilliant moment in the routine that left an impact for me. He was dancing side-by-side with Cheryl and he was looking directly into my eyes for two counts of eight. In that moment he was so in the dance. I could see it and feel it. His arm movements were still a bit shortened, but that passion, it was mesmerizing and powerful. Go Alfonso!

I felt passion all over that dance on my TV set. The best dance of the night along with Derek and Sadie and Mark and Bethany in my opinion. More at Parade including a surprise visit from her boyfriend from Spain (he’s so cute).

Mark Ballas Writes On DWTS Week 5, Looking Forward To The Rumba Next

Mark Ballas has written a new blog at Hollywood Life. He talks on this week’s dance with Bethany Mota and how disappointed he was in their scores (I don’t blame him. I thought they should have been better too). He says others were disappointed too. He also writes of how proud he was of Derek Hough and Sadie Robertson. He also gives a sneak peek into he and Sadie’s next dance. More below and at the link.

I was a little bummed on Bethany’s score. I felt like she could have gotten a couple of 9’s, and I took it to heart afterwards because we worked so hard on getting a little more “oomph” out of her in her performance. Even the judges said she had improved on that, but she still got the same score as the week before. I was being a little hard on myself backstage, but as the night went on, it seemed like the scoring got increasingly worse. The vibe backstage definitely reflected that, people were really down about it, so I thought maybe I shouldn’t be so upset because everyone was going through it, too. Still, the scoring was on the lower side across the board and it’s tough because these people are not professional dancers, but they’re out here doing the best that they can. The judges were throwing up 5’s and giving some tough criticism. I know it’s their opinion and it’s professional and they want to be constructive, but I felt that it was just a little too harsh.

I’m looking forward to having Sadie back and dancing the Rumba next week. It’s a sensual, romantic dance, and I want to make sure that it’s age-appropriate while still telling the story as beautifully as she does. It’s also Pitbull week! I’m a big Pitbull fan, so it’ll be awesome to have him come on the show, perform, and judge. I’m really looking forward to it!

All in all, great week, some amazing routines tonight. I was so proud of Sadie and Derek, and truly blessed to have had Bethany in the switch-up and enjoy the experience with her because she’s an amazing person! So I’m really glad that I made such an awesome new friend!

Julianne Hough Style Watch for DWTS19 Week 5, Sister Marabeth Pictured Behind The Scenes

If you head to People, you can read how Julianne put her look together for Dancing With The Stars last night. I loved her dress, did you? Also, her sister Marabeth is seen with her backstage. Both so cute.

“We’ve been having fun, creating looks each week that are completely different from the last and so we were definitely in need of a more dramatic cut,” stylist Anita Patrickson tells PEOPLE of the “clean, sleek and fresh” style she chose. “Julianne’s bright blue eyes just lit up when she tried on the dress. We are both massive Pucci fans and so of course this dress was a slam dunk! The back is also fabulous. Business in the front, party in the back!”

Echoes Hough, “I love the sporty essence of this look. The strong lines and bright cobalt blue are all really dramatic elements that we felt would translate well on the show. Its also super sexy and fun from the back! I’ve worn Pucci a number of times to award shows and the cuts are always really beautiful, this dress is no exception!”

Karina Smirnoff Might Not Be Returning To Dancing With The Stars This Season

Is it possible Karina Smirnoff might not return for this season of Dancing With The Stars? E Online updates us. Here is a take below. You can also listen to Tony Dovolani talk on the link.

The professional dancer might not be returning to Dancing With the Stars this season after suffering a “serious” injury during rehearsals on Sunday, costar Tony Dovolani, who was with Karina when she went to the hospital, told E! News after Monday night’s show.

So what exactly happened that led to Karina’s hospitalization?

“She went to wet her shoes so that we could have better traction…she slipped and ran into the stairs with her shin, her arm,” Dovolani recalled. “I was so afraid because I saw half of it, basically on her way down. I thought she would hit her face or neck or anything like that, so luckily she didn’t.”

*Lots of prayers to Karina and a speedy recovery!

PureDWTS Season 19, Week 5 – Power Rankings

And this is the week that the hammer drops and suddenly the judges are “over” some of the dance crushes they have had so far this season – particularly Julianne and her crush on Tommy.  Hate to say it, but you only have yourselves to blame, guys – when you gush over the same people doing the same rudimentary stuff week after week, you can’t expect them to improve…and then it’s kinda lame to suddenly say “I’m bored, I want more.” But in the same token, you also don’t have to be over-the-top mean – and I think they got that way with a few of the couples tonight.  They seemed to lose sight of the fact that these were NOT the regular pairings, which is a tough enough row to hoe, and on top of that, they were all doing these bizarre dance styles that none of them are extensively trained in.  Was this REALLY the best week to drop that hammer, stooges?

So I guess the asshattery from Julianne, Carrie Ann, and Bruno made me thankful for Jessie J, who at least seemed to try and find the positive in everyone’s routines while still giving a useful critique – she is a judge on The Voice UK, after all, so I think she felt obligated to be constructive.  Also quite impressed with her ability to not only sing live (!!!), but also do some dancing at the same time.  As I said on Twitter – it’s so rare to find singers that actually sing live and don’t just lip sync, let along singers that sing live and dance as well.  The only other singer I can think of off the the top of my head that also does both is Usher…so she’s in good company.

So I guess all this talk about the judges tonight brings me to pose this question to everyone: do we really need Len? Next week will be the 4th week out of 6 that Len hasn’t been at the judges’ table – and I’m not really noticing his absence.  I’m almost wondering, what with his sorta-kinda farewell speech on the finale last season, if he originally was not gonna come back at all this season – and TPTB somehow guilted him into doing a few shows just to maintain some consistency.

But anyway – no elim tonight, but there is one next week, based on last week’s votes, this week’s scores and votes, and next week’s scores.  As our longtime readers know, the more total points given out = the smaller the margins = the greater the likelihood of a “shocking” elimination.  It really becomes a battle of the fanbases – who’s getting the votes vs. who isn’t.  I don’t care if you’re at the bottom of the leaderboard – in a massive-points-dump-to-calculate-elimination scenario like this one, the playing field becomes a lot more level.  To give you an idea of what crazy sh*t could happen – Sabrina was voted off the all-star season in a week where she was only 1/2 point away from a perfect score…but the elim was based on multiple weeks of scores and votes.  Vote, vote, vote, kids – even if your favorite is in the lead.

1.) Alfonso & Cheryl (Witney) – Aaaaand we’re back to nitpicking Alfonso to death, I see – can’t let him get too confident now, can we PTB? Once again, he dances FLAWLESSLY – and in a style that’s totally different than anything we’ve seen from him so far. He nails the technique (those heel things he was doing at the beginning are insanely difficult – the bf actually got a hairline fracture attempting it during a showcase routine), he nails the drama (loved the dust – just that added drama every time he clapped his hands), and he nails the partnering…and all Carrie Ann and Bruno wanna talk about is the distance between his neck and his shoulder??? Seriously, you stooges – what’s the complaint gonna be next week? He’s moving his ears in a strange way when he’s dancing? His pupils are too dilated? He’s flaring his nostrils too much? Because this is getting ri-goddamn-diculous. I guess I see what they’re trying to do – trying to level the playing field, make it seem like Alfonso isn’t running away with this season (even though he really is), but there’s gonna reach a point when even the most dim viewers are gonna say “Ok, that’s just being petty.” And sorry, but 8’s for a dance that good are just ASSININE…especially when they specifically say Sadie missed a few steps in the beginning of her routine, and give her 9’s across the board. She earned her 9’s – but so did Alfonso. Oh well – at least he still gets THUNDEROUS applause after every dance he does. 😀 Read more..

PureDWTS Season 19 Week 5 Interviews, Some Dances Revealed For Week 6

What a night again on Dancing With The Stars. I loved so many of the dances…though the judges were all over the place with under scoring and over scoring. Let’s see what the couples thought. Below are their interviews and a recap with ABC7, Afterbuzz TV, Access Hollywood, and PopTVDotCom. You can also read on some backstage interviews at Glamour. Note: from these interviews, so far, we learn that Mark & Sadie have a rumba next and Mark says they have a beautiful song. Artem and Lea have a Salsa. Val & Janel have a Samba. Witney won’t say what her dance is with Alfonso, but, mentions “Pitbull” when asked about it. Lastly, Peta and Tommy have a Foxtrot. Hopefully, we’ll find out more on the other couple’s dances soon. One more last note and from ABC7: Pitbull is the guest judge for next week.

ETA: You can listen to a review by Candace Cameron Bure on GMA at this link if interested. She also names her top 5.

ETA2: According to Antonio’s instagram, he & Cheryl have a salsa. Thanks to Lauren for the heads up.

ETA3: If you head to E News, you can hear Mark and Sadie talk on their dances last night. Mark raves about Derek and how much he helped Sadie. They mention Bethany too and how much she killed it. Lots more at Pure Derek Hough as well on these four.

Also added below are some interviews with Extra.
