Flashback Friday: DWTS Season 1
First, I want to give Vogue complete credit for the idea, because she has started a flashback Friday post over on PDH.
Since Season 20 will be a big 10 year anniversary for DWTS, I thought it would be a nice idea to take the time to look back on each of the past seasons, and see and discuss how the show evolved. We’ll do one season a week, and one dance from each of the contestants. If possible, I’ll try to find a pro dance from the season.
So here we are!
SEASON ONE premiered June 1, 2005 and ran for 6 weeks. with 6 stars competing. Harold Wheeler Orchestra and his singers provided the music, and we had 3 judges, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba. Tom Bergeron was our host, and his co-host number one was Lisa Canning.
TRISTA SUTTER and LOUIS VAN AMSTEL was the first couple eliminated on DWTS. They danced a waltz and a rumba, and left the show on June 8, 2005. Here’s their waltz.
EVANDER HOLYFIELD and EDYTA SLIWINSKA was the second couple eliminated, on June 15, 2005. They danced a cha cha, quickstep and a jive. Here’s their quickstep.
RACHEL HUNTER AND JONATHAN ROBERTS were the third couple eliminated, on June 22, 2005. They danced waltz, rumba, tango, samba. Here’s their tango.
JOEY McINTYRE and ASHLY DEL GROSSO were the fourth couple eliminated, on June 29, 2005. They danced cha cha, quickstep, jive, samba, foxtrot, paso doble, and a group Viennese Waltz. Here’s their paso.
JOHN O’HURLEY and CHARLOTTE JORGENSEN and KELLY MONACO and ALEC MAZO were the last 2 standing. Kelly was crowned the winner on July 6, 2005, and then they had a Dance Off, where John was crowned the winner. John and Charlotte danced cha cha, quickstep, tango, samba, foxtrot, paso doble, quickstep and freestyle as well as a group Viennese Waltz during the season, and rumba, waltz and freestyle in the dance off. Here’s John and Charlotte’s foxtrot.
Kelly and Alec danced waltz, rumba, jive, samba, foxtrot, paso doble, samba, freestyle, a group Viennese waltz and in the dance off, cha cha, quickstep and freestyle. Here’s their rumba.
And for fun, here’s the group Viennese Waltz.
Next week, we’ll look at Season 2.
So much fun! What a lot of work you did making this post, thank you!
Lori, that was a gas. Thanks so much. Edyta is one of the pros in the beginning that made me a fan.
Wow! That was fantastic! Thanks so much, Lori! I will look forward to Fridays for sure! The judges and Tom look so young here! Can’t get enough of Jonathan! Love him and miss him!
It was definitely fun to write that! I know, everyone was so YOUNG!
Trista definately was very nice buttonthisbdaybinstill remember watching thebfirstvepisode of season one and going “she is definately going first”. Season one was such a trip. Kelly was the ultimate comeback kid and john was fun….definately a little bitter when all was said and done. Joey was my fav that season becuase he was so energetic. At the time I thought nobody could have more energy than him…..than Joey fatone came around and was the human version of the energizer bunny lol.
Stupid phone: was a very nice person but to this day I still remember watching the first episode…..
Last one I promise lol. Rachel was really good. I actually think that on any other season she would have gotten a lot farther but season one was such a testing ground for future seasons…..in a weird way I kinda wish they did group dances like they used to do. One of the coolest things about season one in my opinion was seeing the judges being tough and pulling out the lower numbers in week one for kelly and her reaction of “tell me what I gotta do and I will do it” and went from an akward mover (Carrie Ann) to doing all the tricks in the end.
I just love how serious the judges were when giving their scores. Even when they gave a 10 they had such an expression-less face. Cracks me up!
Now a days, Bruno can’t give a 10 without standing up and Carrie Ann can’t get excited without falling of her chair. Hahaha.
@cc: Len hasn’t deviated too much from his score giving face since season one at least lol. He may crack the occasional smile or laugh or whatever when he is happy now but it’s better than his executioner face that he used in season one lol.
What a GREAT idea for these posts! It will make the off season so much fun!!!!!
THANK YOU!
This will be a fun series to watch over the DWTS break!
The biggest thing I noticed for this first season is how low-key everyone seemed to be. Getting 9s would be like getting 10s today, but the contestants all looked so stoic when getting good scores! lol
One thing I noticed about the dances (at least the ones posted)…there seemed to be a lot of big pauses and long poses in the choreography, which made the routines a little boring after awhile, I must admit.
I agree that Rachel Hunter was actually really good. She had great lines and control over her body.
Nice to see ballroom dancing. Wish they would do more of it now.
John losing to Kelly is just the beginning of the best dancer of the season (who happens to made it to the finals) that lost in the finals, followed by the likes of Stacey, Mario, Gilles, and so on. Kelly was great in All-Stars but she’s not showing any of those with Alec, imo.
I only watched the dances on YT and not the whole show, but it’s refreshing to see how things were back there and yes, how the judges tried to look ultra serious when handing the scores (compared to the way they threw it now)
