DWTS Season 20’s Rumer Willis And Val Chmerkovskiy Discuss The New Season, Fox Trot Up First
Thanks to DWTSGossip for this find. Below in the two videos Rumer Willis talks about her new Broadway show in Chicago. Her Dancing With The Stars partner Val Chmerkovskiy also joins them to talk about the show’s upcoming season. They dance too. Their first dance is the Fox Trot.
ETA: Here they are on Extra last week. Val says she has natural ability and they are the best from all the couples….
ETA2: And they did an interview with ABC7 in Chicago too….
I like Rumer , she seems like a nice person and I think she will be good. I’m interested to see what choreography Val will do for them as from the little I have seen she looks very good. They look a lot more relaxed now than their initial interviews and look very comfortable together .
I love watching the foxtrots the most (probably the one dance that always makes me smile) so this is great news in my opinion. Is this the first time Val’s partner has had the foxtrot in week one since Sherri?
Check out the post for another interview. Val says they are the best from all of the couples. Here we go again.
So if he doesn’t care about winning, then why say they are the best. To say that implies you think you should win imo. Rumer seems like the “anti Janel” but I still think they will not connect with viewers in the way some of the other couples will. I also wish Val’s partners did not get so intense. It is as if they join the Chmerkovskiy cult of intense self promotion.
Strange to say “we are the best” before the season has started. Rumer already said that none of the other couples could compete with them, or something like that, didn’t she?
I think it is interesting that he may STILL not understand this show. You can be the best – it doesn’t mean you are going to win. Winners have a variety of things that get them the MBT – being the ‘best dancer’ is not necessarily one of them…
Will somebody please give that boy a dope slap?
Sueb, I don’t think Val will ever understand the show; his brother never did. It seems to me The Fam lives in their own manufactured reality, which is fine except when their reality collides with the real world. When that happens, they get ugly and look around for someone else to blame for their shattered illusions. Then they go right back to rebuilding them, exactly as they were before. They seem incapable of change.
for some reason, I’d never vote for Val whoever is he paired with. I just can’t stand this guy, I think he just doesn’t understand this show, for him it’s just about winning and not about fun and the journey the pro’s have to come with their partners. that’s probably why he hasn’ t won yet. but I have the feeling that maybe this anniversary season the producers will try to let Val win it. hope there won’t be such a big protection like last season with Janel.
Are people just commenting for the sake of making anti Val comments or really watching the interviews? These Chicago interviews seem to be the most grounded and playful that I’ve ever seen of Val, with a lot of “tongue in cheek” remarks that don’t translate well onto paper. He seems relaxed, and Rumer seems to be a good, calm influence on him. She also seems quietly confident and unwilling to put up with any BS. They both seem to enjoy a sarcastic sense of humor that isn’t meant to be taken seriously. Starting to see more of the playful Val that was with Sherry Shepherd. If that can be combined with great dancing and choreography, then there is potential. I think that dancing with Emma was good for Val on the DWTS tour…maybe her attitude is infectious. Still looking forward to all of the dancers for the season – think it will be full of surprises. Super excited that Nastia will be dancing – have wanted to see her for a long time. Only reservation is seeing a 14 y/o competing with adults…let her have a childhood!!!
@moravamc – Are you just trying to stir the pot by making accusations?
Yeah Moravamac, ..and then he messed it up by being egotistical in the Extra interview. Same old same old 🙄
Court, I think so!
I really don’t understand why this boy can’t learn from past mistakes. Seriously, arrogance gets you NOTHING on this show. Take a note: the male pros who have some humility (not the fake kind that Val puts on from time to time) and have been around for a bit have all won MBTs. And I include Tony in that one.
seriously not trying to stir the pot…there have been seriously cringe worthy moments in the past, but I do respect the talent that Val brings to DWTS. Was never a huge Mark Ballas fan, but have been impressed with his growth w/challenging partners. Always try to start the season with a clean slate and pure optimism. The Extra interview was done before the Chicago interviews…like to think that the usual intensity is decreasing and just maybe he could be relaxing into it this year. No need to slam…
@moravamc – “Slam”? Ok, but do you understand why your statement could have been interpreted as “pot-stirring”? You could have easily just expressed your own opinion – “I thought Val was being playful and appropriate and didn’t do anything wrong” – but instead, you decided to throw in a remark about how others “might being saying anti-Val stuff just for the sake of saying anti-Val stuff”, which was a direct dig at those who didn’t share your opinion. Had you just kept it at expression your own opinion, I doubt anyone would have batted an eye – but when you drag others into it, then you tend to encounter some pushback. Nine times out of ten, this is what starts heated arguments around here – people dragging others into their comments instead of just sticking to expressing their own opinions. And nine times out of ten, the person dragging others into their comments feigns innocence.
I must say I like confident people. I like people with “swag”. I like people with a “can-do” attitude. However I don’t people who are arrogant, and arrogance rolls off Val like steam from a cow pie on a cold day.
*don’t like people*
sorry bad proofing
I’ve watched all their interviews. I just don’t find Rumer endearing.
moravamc, Mark Ballas had a few bad seasons, and he took quite a bit of stick for his behavior here. I was definitely disappointed in him during that period, but as you say he matured a lot and changed his attitude/approach on DWTS. I’d like to be able to say the same about Val because he is a talented dancer. However, he hasn’t shown me any emotional growth or maturity. To support my point, I give you a quote from your own post: “He seems relaxed, and Rumer seems to be a good, calm influence on him.” First, that’s a complete role reversal of what I expect in a pro/celebrity pairing. The pro should be a calming influence on the celebrity! After all, the celeb is the one who’s out of their comfort zone. Second, Val’s a grown man who shouldn’t need anyone exerting a calming influence on him. At his age, he should be responsible for his own emotional stability.
Val really needs to be more modest… I am not talking about these interviews specificaly (well, I didn’t like the “we are the bsts” comment) but about all his instagram pics and recent tweets… I totally agree PJ, having confidence is very good, but sometimes Val seems over the top and you don’t want to support him.
It’s sad for the partners he gets because until he changes his comportment, a lot of people are not going to vote for him.
Excellent point Cidra, it reminds me of people saying Meryl had a good influence on Maks and that she calmed him. Well, it should be about the celebrity, not reallay the pro. I wonder if Val is really like that or if he is too much influenced by his brother
I really wasn’t listening to much that Val was saying in the WindyCity interview.. my eyes keep focusing in on Rumer’s GIGANTIC Lion tattoo.
I was really hoping that touring with DWTS pros (other than only “fam”), seeing the fans, being in a non-competitive environment would have a positive effect on Val — hoping against hope that he would experience another way to be, and like it! Alas, it is not to be. At this point I don’t think TPTB are doing him any favors by always pairing him with showmance bait. He needs a season like Peta had with Tommy. The only way he’s going to possibly see things differently is by putting him in a different situation. In fact, swapping Rumer and Suzanne might have created more interesting — and productive? — pairs.
#15 PJ: Love it, ha ha ha ha !!!!! And I agree! I also agree with posters that say that Val does not understand how the show works. I think he may still be influenced by his success as a competitive ballroom dancer and as a result, thinks this should be enough to win him the MBT. However, many of the DWTS pro dancers are competition winners or top 10. Unfortunately, the realization and understanding that the true DWTS winning combo of pro charm, humility, personality and humor (Derek), coupled with amazing pro choreo and teaching talent that showcases their celebrity, has escaped Val for some reason. I don’t know why that is, but in order to increase his MBT chances (unless TPTB have arranged his win this season in which case he can continue his arrogant ways), he might want to use Derek as a role model. It certainly can’t hurt.
I totally agree with you Suzy! Seeing some videos of the tour really made me think that we will finally get a modest Val, focusing only on the dance and not on the MBT. I loved his friendship with Mark and Emma and it made me forget the rivalries often highlited between the C-Bros and HoughBallas.
However, at the end of the day, (this is my opinion) but I stii think that Derek is the one that trully understood what the show is about and is not in it to win it. He just wants to make his partner shine.
Well, the season didn’t start yet so I am still hoping that Val gets inspired by Drek’s mentality instead of Maks’ one and that we will get a season showmance or dram free from his side 🙂
Considering Mario was about to ask Val who was their biggest competition, I didn’t find his answer out of context. He actually seems very low key to me compared to previous seasons. He has been this way since the tour so I’m glad Rumer seems to be a calm personality to vibe with him.
@Cidra…
I agree with what you said:
The pro should be a calming influence on the celebrity! After all, the celeb is the one who’s out of their comfort zone. Second, Val’s a grown man who shouldn’t need anyone exerting a calming influence on him. At his age, he should be responsible for his own emotional stability.
All the pros who have been around teaching the celebrates more than a few seasons should have an idea of what their role is each season with their celebrate. I realize that the pro’s personality blending with their celebrate partner’s is an important factor, the Pro dancer also needs to have a good positive affect on the celebrate and should concentrate on her/him and not so much themselves. They have had their day and that’s why they are on the show in the cast list. It’s about the celebrate and the Pro giving them everything they need to become a dancer each week so they can show how well they are learning as they hit the dance floor.
I also struggled through the 2nd rehearsal of Robert & Kym, as Robert was getting on my nerves and it became tiresome. He just seemed to want to act up in front of the camera (maybe because of his recent announcement), and Kym was being such a sweetheart on camera. But, I really doubt that she lets him get away with much behind the scenes. She’s a competitor and being a great dancer and great teacher with creative choreography, she is not going to put up with the crazy & obnoxious behavior. I think we will see a more serious side to Robert and even good dancing. I love how Kym handles things while on camera. She’s a jewel.
I watched Charlette and Keo for the 1st time, and I also think Keo likes to be on camera and the attention seeker side of him comes out (only in rehearsal), while Charlotte is the more serious one and shows she wants to get it right. I so wanted to climb in my monitor though and braid her hair or something to get it up out of her way so she would quit playing with it. 🙂
As for Rumer and Val, I don’t see Val changing a whole lot, as he has the influence of big brother and I think they have it born in them to be uptight and full of self-love. When he realized that it is all about his partner and giving her everything he can to make her a dancer, he will be ahead of the game. He was good with Zendaya that way, but she was a dancer before she enter the DWTS scene. I want to see that side of Val again.
I missed Willow and Mark and don’t think they were uploaded on Pure were there, as I have not come across them. But, the affect these access rehearsals have on me is just realizing the hard work the couples have to put forth to create a good dance each week to bring to the dance floor. I have a greater respect for that part of this show.
