That was cute! Riker’s silly hairstyle combined with his ultra laid-back attitude at the cast reveal and in the preseason had me dismissing him as Cody 2.0. However, from watching him in rehearsals and in these clips, he’s pretty funny, doesn’t seem stuck on himself, and he takes the dancing seriously. (One niggle: I do wish he’d acknowledge that he has danced ballroom before, but maybe TPTB are telling him not to.) Allison seems to be more relaxed and likeable this season too. So I’m glad to say I’m revising my opinion of this team. I hope the trend continues for me because I’d much rather like the couples than dislike them.
I’m with you Cidra. Before, I wasn’t really keen on him. Now, I want him to be in the finals (haha.) He most likely will be unless he’d be a Charlie 2.0. But instincts tell me that he’s gonna stay till the finals (possibly win it if things REALLY go his way). I like him a lot.
Although, I wish he didn’t go shirtless for the salsa. It just doesn’t seem him. But I’m happy he’s embracing the competition like I didn’t think he would.
I don’t think he meant it in that way. He said he didn’t have dancing experience. He probably meant that he wasn’t a professional dancer so he doesn’t dance all the time like a professional would. He took lessons when he was younger yes and has done ballroom competitions but neither are like DWTS. Besides he knows that everyone knows he was a dancer so there would be no reason form him to deny that which is why I think he meant it differently.
I don’t know how you guys didn’t like him at first because he is a really cool person and he’s such a sweetheart. Haha, I love how I wrote that like I know him. I don’t (unfortunately) but I have been a fan of him and his band for awhile now and they make me laugh in every interview I’ve ever seen. Anyways, I know for sure that Riker is gonna be in the finals and I have a good feeling he’s gonna win!
Whoa, silly hair style? I love his hair and I also loved him going shirtless…but you know that’s just me ha!
Whole lotta excuses there, Miranda. There is a huge difference between “dance experience” and “professional dancer” – both DEFINITELY give you a leg up on the competition, so saying he “meant he wasn’t a professional dancer” doesn’t really cut it. He was asked if he had EXPERIENCE, not if he was a professional, and I expect he is smart enough to recognize the difference. Yet he acted like he had none.
@PrincessHeidi you also told me about the Erin interview in response to one of my comments, so I went back and watched it again. Erin asks him about his relation with the Houghs and if he was “in the ballroom with the Houghs.” He says no and recounts a memory of dancing with Julianne. When I watch I don’t detect denial of experience. I guess if you want you could still say he was lying or hiding things, but I’m the kind of person who gives people the benefit of the doubt, or asks them about it before jumping to conclusions. And he has never been asked about this specifically.
His dance experience is on his wikipedia page. Lindsay and Brittany are on the show! Is he really that much of an idiot to lie about it openly on live television? Again I’ve given him the benefit of the doubt, until he’s asked about it directly.
As far as giving him “a leg up on the competition,” I mentioned this before, DWTS is not a real dance competition. It never has been! There is nothing fair about it to begin with because it’s a TV show, and after watching it for so long I think you can tell how much of it is staged (and I’m not saying all!) for entertainment…from the judges score, to the packages, etc. So when people say he has an unfair advantage, they forget what they are watching!! If you don’t want anyone to have a leg up in the competition then no one should have ANY dance experience, everyone should be around the same age, and no one should have any disabilities or maladies like cancer! Most importantly the audience should not be voting, as the better contenders are unfairly eliminated all the time on this show. If you are setting this standard for one person, you should do the same for others on the show.
Cheating and having “a leg up” is applicable when you are in a just and fair system, and this is not the case.
The reality is people who do have dance experience or natural abilities make for a better show because they can display better dances, and I like watching them. I had no idea who Riker was before DWTS but I can say I can’t wait to see what he’ll do next week.
Sara, go eat a Snickers.
And once again, THE POINT IS NOT THAT RIKER HAS PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE. This is a fact that so many of his fans that are leaping to his defense seem to be omitting in their blind rage. The thing that bugs me is that he has experience and is still trying to play it off like “Durrrr, what’s a foxtrot??? I’ve never done this before lolz”. It’s an insult to my intelligence, and it’s lying by omission. Never once did Alfonso try to hide the fact that he danced on Broadway, had extensive tap experience, or danced with Michael Jackson. And my god, people CONSTANTLY brought it up. “It’s no fair!!! Alfonso’s a professional dancer!!!” You don’t think they’d react the same way upon hearing that Riker once competed (and held his own) against some of our current pros??? Guess I don’t blame him for trying to sweep that under the rug – but damn, people find out about it after the fact? Sure sounds like he’s been trying to hide something. Full disclosure is ALWAYS the best policy. You wanna give him “the benefit of the doubt”? Awesome. Great. Good for you. Shall we canonize you as a saint now, or should we wait until you perform a miracle or two?
And please, honey – spare me the lecture about how this isn’t “a real ballroom competition”. Been there, done that, you’re preaching to the choir – we’ve been doing this blogging thing for awhile now, we know now it works. You’re still outta your element, Donny. But I can see that this story clearly has some teeth, at the rate and with the intensity that his fans have been having meltdowns like yours. So I pose a question to you: if it truly doesn’t matter, why are you freaking out about it? 🙂
Sara, when you have to use that many words to excuse something, it’s a sign. He’s dissembling. Period.
Now, that is not to be confused with me CARING that he has dance experience (which he so obviously does), nor caring that it gives him a leg up on the competition (which it so obviously does). I don’t care!! There have been lots of people with legs up on the competition – but nice try at changing the conversation. But yes, it is a big fat lie and that I do care about. Is this show fair? No. Do I care about ringers? No. Do I care about him hiding it in order to get ahead? Yes, I absolutely do, ESPECIALLY when certain fans hound Derek to death over his so-called ringers (including Joanna which is laughable) – including this season when it turns out that his ringer isn’t even CLOSE to the biggest ringer on the show. And that is a fact. It’s a double standard, dearie, and all your talk won’t change the fact that every partner Derek has ever had is labeled a ringer – even by Erin and the judges at times – while Riker skates by as this miracle child who has never danced but is a prodigy. If you don’t see the problem there, then I suggest that your fan goggles need a bit of adjustment.
And really, saying it’s all out there for anyone to find so obviously he wouldn’t lie about it?? Come on. Lindsay, Brittany, Derek, Julianne and every other pro on the show who are well aware of his experience are paid employees of abc and are not going to rock any boats. Besides all that, it’s not up to them to out Riker on national TV. Which of those people do you think are likely to actually do that? The ONLY one who might do it is Val and even he is being quiet (for now) about it. What does that tell you, eh?
“His dance experience is on his wikipedia page. Lindsay and Brittany are on the show! Is he really that much of an idiot to lie about it openly on live television?”
Yes, I think so, Sara. Like you said, it can be checked. However, his Wiki page just glossed over his dance competition background, and I quote, “Riker and his sister Rydel took piano lessons and competed as partners in dance competitions.” It’s not as clear as the link that Courtney shared on this site. Now, THAT was very telling.
Like many here who like the boy because he’s quite laid back, not stuck up at all, and works hard on the show, I just wish he’d be open about it. Nothing wrong with having dance experience. What is wrong to me is not owning it. If it does not really matter because he was just a kid then, then he ought to be forthright about it. One thing I learned from this show: lie or hide your dance background, it comes back to bite your behind. See Danica, Season 18.
When I think of Riker and his experience it’s seems just like Danica’s (except he actually has more experience). The difference is that I like Riker and his partnership with Allison, and I didn’t love Danica (though I didn’t dislike her either). I know I cared about Danica having experience and not coming forward about it, and just because I actually like Riker doesn’t change the fact that I care about people being honest about what they’ve done in the past.
I think what a lot of fans of Riker (or even Danica at the time) have a hard time understanding is that some of us actually really enjoy ringers. I love seeing good dancing on the show. I just wish I the audience knew the reason why they were seeing good dancing.
Kaitlyn, we are on the same page. I really like Riker and I just want to see good dancing on this show….but, it’s disappointing that he isn’t being honest.
With that said, I just want to say that I will be supporting him and Allison for the finals before I support Val and Rumer. That is a for sure.
I just wanted to say yes he was experience is tap, hip hop, and latin. But from what I’ve read, heard, etc ballroom has never been confirmed. Foxtrot is the only dance is claimed not to have known, which is a ballroom dance. I don’t know for sure – but that’s my thoughts. I also think maybe the producers and abc tell contestants not to say anything, and since they sign contracts it could explain so many people staying quiet.
