The Dancing Poetry Corner – Dancing With “Spring” In The Steps

I have always loved watching shows devoted to dancing! Who didn’t love American Bandstand! A Saturday dancing feast on a platter hosted by the incomparable Dick Clark. There was a show called Dance Party on WGAL-TV, Lancaster, PA. High school students could be on the show and dance an afternoon away. My high school was privileged to be one of those schools. Variety shows of the past were Must-See TV, including Hullabaloo, Shindig, another Dick Clark production Where the Action Is, etc. I used to watch ballroom dancing shows on PBS. There is actually a show coming to PBS on April 24 called America’s Ballroom Challenge.

The one that resonates the most was The Lawrence Welk Show. My Grandma and Mother loved the show and I watched along with them. Recently I watched some of the shows on YouTube. I sometimes tune in to the re-runs on PBS. The primary, most well-known dancer on the show was Bobby Burgess. That is a familiar last name in the dancing world, of course Sharna, too. Bobby was paired with three ladies on the show, Barbara Boylan, Cissy King, and Elaine Balden. Bobby and Elaine are still active in the Welk tour shows.

The ballroom dances of the past are the same as what we see on Dancing With The Stars. Burgess and his partners did all of them. It is amazing to see how the past and present connect. Burgess, at age 73, is still very much active in the world of dance. He has been dancing since the age of four. He was also part of The Mickey Mouse Club. Read more..

Official Statement on Derek Hough’s Status

Cross posted from PureDerekHough.com:

Derek’s official representative sent the following statement regarding his current status and the status of Nastia on the show.

While rehearsing for the 10th Anniversary Dancing with the Stars television special Monday night in Los Angeles, Derek Hough suffered injuries to his right foot and left ankle. He has been diagnosed with a broken toe on his right foot and sprains to his left ankle on both the inside and outside aspects and a bone bruise on the same ankle. Derek will remain in Los Angeles this week to rehab his injuries and his understudy will be filling in for him for New York Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York. While it remains unclear at this time if Derek will be able to perform on the Monday April 27 episode of Dancing with the Stars, his partner Nastia Liukin will train in Los Angeles this week with pro-dancer Sasha Farber to prepare for the Live show.

I know all of you are either praying, sending positive energy and vibes, or maybe even chanting (a tiny joke) right along with me and Vogue. More than anything we want to see Derek up and around again very soon. The dance floor…the stage…just isn’t the same without his contagious light and energy.

ETA: Will Derek dance on Dancing With The Stars on Monday? See PureDerekHough.com for a new update.

Chilling… resting the feet…with the girls. ..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)
