The Dancing Poetry Corner – The Spirit of Freedom

Finale – Part One

Freedom – Performing without restriction, the state of being free, a right or a privilege to be able to live in freedom, ease of movement or performance

The Finales of Dancing With The Stars are populated with highly anticipated Freestyles. There are no restrictions, the sky is the limit for the creative juices to be flowing. Freestyles can range from an epic production to a subdued dance telling a story. Any number of elements can make up a Freestyle. A Freestyle is usually a water cooler subject. A freestyle can be remembered as a highlight of the Dancing With The Stars viewing experience!

Some of my favorite Freestyles – Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke – Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy; Julianne Hough and Helio Castroneves – Banana Man Quickstep; Julianne Hough and Apollo Anton Ohno – their adorable Hip Hop routine; Alfonso Ribiero and Witney Carson – their high energy, tap happy dance; there are too many to mention.

The pairs had two dances to do for the finale – their repeated personal choices and the Freestyles.

The Tenth Anniversary. Season 20, Finale Freestyles were done in:

The Spirit of Freedom

Freestyle Spirit – Set One
Noah and Sharna
Contemporary – Titanium
With Troupe Assist

Noah the Vulnerable, depicting a heartbeat of pain
A powerful reality exhibition, a spirit of steel
With heart and love, poetic and meaningful
Breaking out, being free celebration
An inspirational transformation

Freestyle Spirit – Set Two
Riker and Allison
Contemporary – I Won’t Dance
With Troupe Assist

Broadway Revue Blockbuster, a spotlight for Riker
With flair, finesse, and piñache ala Fred Astaire
All the elements of a Freestyle
A strike down Riker’s alley, the past meets the present
Full of dazzling razz-ma-razz and pizzazz

Freestyle Spirit – Set Three
Rumer and Val
Argentine Tango/Contemporary Fusion – Toxic
A cover of Rumer on vocals, Val on violin

Their own personal stamp and personal expression
Completely their own, pure and brave
Intoxicating, invigorating, bewitching intensity
Sharp, staccato sensational movements
Perfect depiction of their style and journey

Personal Choice – Set One
Noah and Sharna
Argentine Tango – Rather Be

Clarity of movement, connection of partners
Picturesque bends and lifts
With newly-found confidence, subtle nuances
Owning the space, with a survivor spirit

Personal Choice – Set Two
Riker and Allison
Jack Sparrow Paso Doble – He’s A Pirate

A showstopper, blockbuster, fierce, fabulous
Powerful Jack-Of-All-Trades Paso
Treasure trove of content, a barn-storming devil
A swashbuckling, epic, dynamic dance

Personal Choice – Set Three
Rumer and Val
Foxtrot – Take Me To Church

Lyrical, light-as-air, swirling, twirling
Purely exquisite, like poetry in motion
Lovely flair of movements, pure Ballroom Bliss
A flawless exhibition of Dancing Royalty

The pairs laid it all out on the dance floor. Their devotion, determination, and spirit shown through dance. Their spirits were soaring as Finale Night – Part One came to a close.

The Spirit of Freedom was exhibited in many ways. Deeply personal emotions were on full display. The spirit of happiness and fun was on full display. The Freestyles were danced with spirit into the Dancing With The Stars Memory Books!

Entertainment Weekly Chats With Rumer Willis And Val Chmerkovskiy About Winning Dancing With The Stars And Next Plans

Entertainment Weekly interviewed Rumer Willis and Val Chmerkovskiy about their run and win on Dancing With The Stars. Read below for how they are feeling on it all right now. Also note, that Rumer will be performing in Sway. See this tweet.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How do you feel after last night’s win?
RUMER WILLIS: I’m so ecstatic. I could not be happier.

What were your thoughts going into last night’s results show?
WILLIS: Honestly, I was just excited. I knew that the work that I had put in and we had one last dance to do, and I just wanted to make it something that I really enjoyed.

How does it feel to be the winner of season 20? It’s been a really special season.
WILLIS: So awesome. I couldn’t be happier that we won in general, but to win also on such a big season. This season they really pulled out all the stops with everything. I feel like everyone who was competing just really brought their A-game. I know it was tough. The dances that were happening and the freestyles that happened at the end were all so incredible, so to have it come down to us was pretty incredible.

Val, this was your first win. How has this season been different for you?
VAL CHMERKOVSKIY: Well, it’s my first win. So that’s already different. But it’s just been a great season. I feel like we approached everything really honestly, and I feel like everything came out genuine. I feel like that’s why people really got behind us and were able to relate to Rumer and her journey. It was great to be a part of that.

What will you miss most now that the season is over?
CHMERKOVSKIY: Performing together.
WILLIS: Yeah.
CHMERKOVSKIY: That’s the biggest thing. There’s so much stress that goes into actually creating the numbers and the rehearsals and the time crunch and preparing that you never really have a chance to appreciate what you’ve done. So I’m going to take a moment to realize what we just did and reflect on that. And then we’re probably going to start missing each other.

Mark Ballas And Shirley Ballas To Hold “What’s Your Why” Smoke Swap Event In New York City

This is so cool. Mark Ballas And Shirley Ballas are holding an event in New York City to help people who smoke to quit. More below from PR Newswire.

PARSIPPANY, N.J., May 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Every smoker has a reason for how they started smoking and why they want to quit. With one of the largest global quit-smoking days approaching, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSKCH) and its Nicorette® and NicoDerm® CQ® smoking cessation brands are encouraging smokers to share their “why” for quitting by providing them the “how” at a free What’s Your Why?™ Smoke Swap event.

The event will take place in New York’s Times Square on Wednesday, May 27, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., anchored by a 20-foot smashed-out cigarette butt. Adult smokers will be encouraged to share and celebrate who or what motivates them to quit – their “why.” All smokers who want to jumpstart a quit attempt will receive support from smoking cessation experts and free quit-smoking product and resources, including a starter pack of Nicorette® gum, NicoDerm® CQ® patches or a $10 coupon towards Nicorette® mini Lozenges.

“It is such an inspiration to hear the “why” from smokers who have quit. What we are learning, too, is each “why” is as individual as the person who shares it. But if I had to share the most common one, I would say it’s a family member’s encouragement. It’s invaluable to smokers who have made this life-changing decision,” said Lisa Maxwell Anekwe, senior brand manager, Smoking Cessation. “We want to help every smoker in his or her effort to quit by providing tools and resources, like Nicorette® and NicoDerm® CQ®, which have helped millions of smokers all over the world in their quit attempt.”(1)

“Dancing with the Stars'” Mark Ballas, who quit smoking more than one year ago, and his mother, world-renowned ballroom dancer and former 40-year smoker Shirley Ballas, will be on site from 2-4 p.m. meeting fans, providing quit tips and taking the stage for a dance demonstration.

“I was very inspired as a child by my mom. So when I put my mind towards quitting smoking, I knew she was going to be the best support and partner. It was the right choice for both of us and we did it together,” said Mark Ballas.

“Mark is my world. I would do anything for him – even quitting smoking. When he asked me to do this with him, I couldn’t say yes fast enough, but there are still times I struggle with cravings. When that happens, I remind myself of my “why” – being there for Mark and my future grandchildren – and it gives me the strength to remain smoke-free,” said Shirley Ballas.
