Entertainment Weekly Chats With Rumer Willis And Val Chmerkovskiy About Winning Dancing With The Stars And Next Plans
Entertainment Weekly interviewed Rumer Willis and Val Chmerkovskiy about their run and win on Dancing With The Stars. Read below for how they are feeling on it all right now. Also note, that Rumer will be performing in Sway. See this tweet.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How do you feel after last night’s win?
RUMER WILLIS: I’m so ecstatic. I could not be happier. What were your thoughts going into last night’s results show?
WILLIS: Honestly, I was just excited. I knew that the work that I had put in and we had one last dance to do, and I just wanted to make it something that I really enjoyed. How does it feel to be the winner of season 20? It’s been a really special season.
WILLIS: So awesome. I couldn’t be happier that we won in general, but to win also on such a big season. This season they really pulled out all the stops with everything. I feel like everyone who was competing just really brought their A-game. I know it was tough. The dances that were happening and the freestyles that happened at the end were all so incredible, so to have it come down to us was pretty incredible.Val, this was your first win. How has this season been different for you?
VAL CHMERKOVSKIY: Well, it’s my first win. So that’s already different. But it’s just been a great season. I feel like we approached everything really honestly, and I feel like everything came out genuine. I feel like that’s why people really got behind us and were able to relate to Rumer and her journey. It was great to be a part of that. What will you miss most now that the season is over?
CHMERKOVSKIY: Performing together.
WILLIS: Yeah.
CHMERKOVSKIY: That’s the biggest thing. There’s so much stress that goes into actually creating the numbers and the rehearsals and the time crunch and preparing that you never really have a chance to appreciate what you’ve done. So I’m going to take a moment to realize what we just did and reflect on that. And then we’re probably going to start missing each other.

Oh please Val. Honest and genuine? Hardly! Rumer seems very likable, I SO wish they’d have given her another Pro :/
Hard work? Does he not know he was HANDED the MBT?
*Eyeroll* TPTB worked harder getting him the win than he did.
#Ananya Hard to believe, I know. I offer you this: I commented a day or two ago that I couldn’t decide if Val was delusional or just not very bright. In a return comment, PH reminded me that those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.
I will not watch these interviews. After MBG I (Mirror Ball Giveaway I, season 15) I made the mistake of watching Tony on the Wendy Williams show and heard him say that he and Melissa had won, against Shawn and Derek, by a landslide. I barely stopped myself from putting my foot through the tv. Thereafter I didn’t watch any interviews from MBG II, and won’t watch any from this farce.
I’m sure that Nastia had a memorable experience because of Derek, but what was done to her was unforgivable. And that it was for the sake of this dolt just doubles down on my disgust.
In all of the interviews, I genuinely like Rumer. She seems very down to earth and warm. I think that she would have always been in contention for the MBT no matter who her partner was. I think that even though she has famous parents I think that she resonated with a lot of people. Someone who comes from a less than perfect family with issues, and yet, that same family rallies around her and supports her journey. They always show family members in the audience; why would it be any different for her. I actually think that she managed her partnership with Val very well. Rumer earned her MBT, and it was well deserved. Maybe we could have seen more of her with someone else, but she gave it her all. It was weird seeing a finals without Val, Derek & Mark together, but we also forget that in the journey of the show, Mark & Derek, even though Val’s age, started on the show sooner while Val remained in the competitive world of ballroom dance, so they are also a couple years ahead of Val in choreographing for TV and are more ready at this point to move forward in their careers with the contacts they have made while on DWTS. It is what it is…I think that all the negativity toward Rumer’s partner takes away from the awesome work that she did. In the end, she became a beautiful, warm dancer.
Er, Val has been on DWTS for FOUR YEARS. He ain’t a newbie. Derek was nominated for an Emmy for the futuristic paso in his fifth SEASON (halfway through his third year) and was doing stellar choreo for non-dancers before that.
Val is clearly a very slow learner. Or he could be like his brother and not learn at all.
PH instead of improving on his choreo, I honestly feel he is regressing. The guy won without creating a freestyle. Honestly has anyone ‘won’ the MBT with less effort?
Regardless of Rumer’s talent, this season was tailor made for Val. The fact he was on The Chew this morning talking about the DWTS tour with Rumer, as well as their win, show that the two things were always linked in the minds of the producers. Val is on the tour, Val won the MB, it is all so obvious imo. I do think they have hitched their wagon to the wrong pro though.
I do think that Val has done much, much better choreo in past seasons. But, when you really look at the majority of it, it is still mostly on the traditional side/competition style.
Some people just don’t have it all. Some people are great at doing what they are told but not good at creating. Like singers, some are amazing vocalists but can’t write a song lyrically or musically to save their life. So, I guess we can give him a few more seasons to see if he grows at all and becomes more creative, but it could come down to that he just isn’t gifted at creativity. He is a great dancer and I guess he might be a solid musician (can’t tell for sure by what he has displayed on the show) but not a good creator of those things. I can understand that, I am good at playing music and singing music but I am not particularly gifted at creating it from scratch.
I hope he tries and doesn’t regress more. If winning helps him calm dow now, like it did Tony, he really could gain more fans if he relaxes his personality and attempts some new creative things. Derek and Mark were more traditional their first few seasons and look where they are now. Karina is another that was very traditional but learned and got really creative over time.
EP, I agree with everything you said.
Likewise, just because someone is gifted with ability and creativity, does not mean they make a good teacher as well. That’s another skill set that I don’t think Val possesses as strongly as others. He’s a very strong dancer, but other than that he is lacking.
There’s a few female celebs that I think would have greatly benefited not only from a more creative mind, but a better teacher as well, such as Lea, Melissa Rycroft (I can only imagine what Derek would have done for her, despite their win!), Chynna, or Charlotte even.
@JudyI I didn’t watch The Chew…is Rumer going on the DWTS tour?? If so then I’m even more annoyed with the manipulation and it clearly shows the producers knew from day they asked her to join the tour that she was going to win.
@Meghan Rumer is going to do a few select shows, I’m guessing along the same lines as janel was slated to do last season before she backed out (probably just the cali ones)
I think they need to put Rumer in Sway, she is probably getting a bigger draw than the brothers and they have to sell a whole lot of tickets!
@Terasia Rumer has been added to Sway. Jenna will be Val’s main dance partner, but Rumer will come in and they will do probably about 2 or so of their numbers from DWTS.
His choreo sucked this season. So much better last season, that was probably the best work that I have seen from him thus far, especially the Jazz, Samba, Contemporary, Paso and Freestyle. This season he didn’t even try, I guess because he knew that he was going to win it from day 1.
congratulations to Val for making Maks winning season choreo look varied and creative
I was just watching Derek and Nicole dances earlier today, I can never get enough of those 2.
