DWTS 21: People Confirms Peta Murgatroyd “Out For the Season”
Damn…this was one partnership I was really looking forward to 🙁 According to People, Peta has indeed decided to sit this season out after finding out she will require surgery on her ankle that will “sideline her for 6-8 weeks”:
Having just come off a three-month, live DWTS tour, Murgatroyd “felt great” heading into rehearsals with her season 21 partner, Andy Grammer. But one day, after putting on her heels, she says she could tell “something was not right.”
“I wanted to check it out properly and make sure I was good to go for the season,” says the pro dancer, 29. “I Got my MRI results back and it was a really bad diagnosis. It showed I had 4 torn ligaments and a floating piece of bone at the back of my ankle. My doctor said I needed surgery and I knew I needed to put my health first if I want to keep dancing on the show into my 30s.”
I gotta applaud Peta for having the strength to say “I need to rest” – I’ve known too many dancers that have tried to soldier through some injuries, only to end up even more injured…and a few times, with their dance careers ended as a result.
As we mentioned in the main cast reveal post, DWTS360 says that Lindsay will step in to replace Peta as Andy’s partner this season; but Peta assures People that she “will be in the rehearsal studio as much as possible to assist” this season. Here’s wishing Peta a speedy recovery, and good luck to Andy and Lindsay this season! 🙂
ETA: Vogue here. Below is a twitter statement from Peta. Awww, I love her. Peta, I just know you will be back to us stronger than ever soon! Lot’s of love and hugs! Get Well Soon!!!
The past three days have been really tough to say the least..I learned that my ankle injury is at a stage that needs surgery immediately. I’m so sorry but I have to step out of Season 21 of DWTS. This is obviously one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made and I seriously struggled with the idea of not being able to dance, but I know my health does come first, and the sooner I get this done, the sooner I can be back in the ballroom for all of you! 6-8 weeks is nothing in the grand scheme of things and I hope to be back before the season ends, doing group numbers and of course cheering on Andy and my friends in audience. It killed me to let someone else take care of Andy, who is such a genuine loving guy. But I know he will be in good hands. I will miss the show so much but just know that I will come better back than ever, and with a brand new ankle 🙂 Thank you for all the love today, I loved reading all of your supportive tweets, even though I couldn’t say anything until now. I will also keep you all up to date on my progress and of course you will see some silly ‘before and after’ surgery pictures ? Lastly, I love you all and thank you for always being so positive for me. Peta will return in no time at all ????
ETA2: Below is a video report from Entertainment Tonight…
Well this bums me out 🙁 I have come to love Peta lately. Really gonna miss her dancing this season but her health comes first so I’m glad she made the right choice. Wishing her a speedy recovery!
On the other hand, I am very happy for Lindsay. Can’t wait to see how she and Andy will work. I don’t know if he’ll be a good dancer but I hope to see some fun routines from them. Here’s hoping Lindsay has a good first season and proves herself to be solid pro material. Maybe then they’ll make her full time pro (though if they didn’t do that with Sasha, I shouldn’t get my hopes up). Anyways.. Very excited to see her and Andy! He’s already one of my top favorites.
Edit: Meant to say Lindsay’s *second* season. Woops!
Sorry to hear about Peta. Happy for Lindsay, hopefully she has been taking notes per se, and can bring them to the rehearsals/dance floor. This is her chance to shine.
Poor peta, I feel that injuries really devastate dancers and athletes. I hope the show doesnt run down their dancers anymore with two tours plus two seasons a yr. And I hope it reminds the pros to take care of their bodies and get enough sleep and downtime. Sometimes esp young people we hink that we can handle it, but no one is invincible. 🙁 I remember how bummed derek was being injured 🙁
Also if she didnt realize something was wrong until she put on her heels, does that mean that for a little while she was walking about with four torn ligaments??? Ouch, maybe she has a high pain tolerance.
So sad! I wish her all the best and hope her ankle heals soon!!!
I’m sad we won’t get to see an Andy/Peta partnership because I think they would have looked great together and their personalities would have meshed very nicely too. However, I’m glad Peta is doing the right thing. Not only is it right for her, it’s right for Andy.
Not only is Peta now an established pro, who’s won the show, but she’s also one of their tall dancers. So I don’t think she has to worry about getting her spot back in the Spring.
Oh, no! Was looking forward to the Andy-Peta partnership! So sorry to hear about her injury. Agreed with everyone; her health comes first.
Glad for Lindsay. I fee like she has grown up a lot during her troupe days. I think she’s a good fit for Andy. She’d look good with him. And Peta is going to help, so I think she’ll do well in her second season as pro.
@5: Jodie. It’s certainly possible; e.g., she may have had partial rather than full tears. Or she may have chalked up pain as normal until it reached a threshold where she knew something was wrong.
Peta’s health come first and she is doing the right thing. I thought her and Andy were a good match because she can make her partner look really good. I wish her the best and hope she can be back in the Spring.
Aww..that’s a bummer. 🙁 Peta, if you read this..hope you heal fast and can get back out there for S22!!
So many times dancers just soldier on and dance through the pain, always aware that there are a legion of dancers just waiting in the wings to take their place. It’s a short career anyway, then to have chunks of time spent on the sidelines hoping your injury heals, then having to slowly get back into shape for dancing. Professional dancers, whatever their discipline, are pretty incredible.
I’ve really grown to like Peta a lot. She showed a lot of heart and soul with her partnership with Tommy. I wish her a speedy and perfect recovery.
I’m so glad it’s Lindsay stepping in and not Jenna.
I have to admit I was never a fan of Peta on DWTS but I have watched her on the tour video and she is a beautiful dancer and seems really sweet. I must say I don’t like how the Maksyl shippers tear her to shred because of their deluded fantasy came to an end w/c is not Peta’s fault at all. They have been saying that she is faking her ankle injury all the time so she can have more time w/ Maks. Right, like she would endanger her living for that? I have never seen so much hate on the internet just because she is dating Maks(who is no big catch to me anyway JMO)but regardless still not her fault.
Wishing Peta a speedy recovery. I was really looking forward to this partnership, it looked like it was going to be fun and enjoyable. If Lindsay is the pro I wish her the best. #Ria I totally agree with your Maksyl shipper comments. I have never seen such outright vile hatred directed to anyone like to Peta. As some who has had 4 knee surgeries and two rotator cuff surgeries, I will say that every orthopedist I dealt with always tried to avoid surgery with PT etc so it’s possible Peta thought it would heal without surgery. And no one chooses surgery to spend more time with their bf, lose their salary and undergo pain and PT pain. But she is doing the right thing or she risks her future. I think as an MBT winner and popular pro she’ll be back in Spring. I hope so for her sake. And maybe DWTS needs to reconsider trying to top MOLT and not overuse their dancers. JMO
Aww.. bummed that Peta won’t be able to dance this season but her health comes first and hope she makes a speedy recovery. I’ll miss her personality but hopefully will be back next Spring.
On the other hand, I’m excited that Lindsay gets another shot at being a pro, can’t wait to see what she brings out this season!
I am not a fan of Peta’s dancing because she is WAY too aggressive for me but I am sorry that she’ll be sitting out this season and I wish her a speedy recovery. She was complaining about her ankle way back when and she couldn’t dance with Michael Sam at the finale but then she ended up being in Sway and she was also in the summer tour. I don’t understand why she decided to do these things when the ankle wasn’t perfect. I hope she didn’t mess up her ankle even more because of the summer tour. I’m playing Monday Morning QB (and I obviously don’t know her personally) but it seems to me that she really should’ve nursed her ankle these past few months instead of aggravating the injury. Didn’t she have to give up ballet because of an injury years ago? I wonder if this is the same injury? I hope she completely recovers. Best wishes to her…
