Afterbuzz TV Reviews DWTS Season 21 Week 4: Let Us Know What You think?
Hey All! Kristyn Burtt and the Gang review Dancing With The Stars Season 21 Week 4. Let us know what you think in comments as always!
ETA: Correction as Kristyn is absent. On another note: Sasha Farber is their guest!
I thought is was a great show. But was a little mad at Sasha when he says that Derek often gets partners with dance experience. Which we know its not true, But other than that he did good filling in.
They are definitely better this season. Not one of them said one word about any lifts and that bothered me. Come on guys be honest. I love Sasha but I was disappointed about his comments about Derek and making it appear as if this is the first time he got a partner with no dance experience…what????
It’s the party line, Jennifer. All the pros have brainwashed themselves into believing that’s why Derek wins so they feel less inadequate about themselves.
What bothers me is that they speak of dance experience as if every celebrity Derek had was a prima ballerina or something. It has been discussed on this site how Allison and Hayley (both great trained contemporary dancers)are less than stellar ballroom dancers, and a bunch of women who may have had some minimal training years ago suddenly know how to shine in ballroom? I just fail to find the logic in that reasoning…
They need Anna back on this show – she atleast wasn’t afraid to critique anyone and everyone. Everyone seems to be tiptoeing around certain pro’s who they are friends with.
Well if Sasha said that about Derek’s partners, I am totally disappointed in him. Maybe he should do a little research! (I don’t watch the show anymore, as I think it is too subjective and is basically a farce. Who are my friends this week? Okay let’s not say anything negative about them this week.) I hope Sasha made the same comment about all of Val’s former partners!
Great show this time, no much criticism, but a lot of fun. I watched this Afterbuzz few times to find what Sasha sad about Derek. Derek had some girls with training and it is true, Joanna, Nicole,Jennifer has some training.#Jennifer, I believe dance experience and some dance training completely different cap of tea.
I heard the part where Sasha spoke of Derek it dint sound like he was deliberately meaning to say that Derek gets partners with Dance experience and he was coming from the point that Bindi has no experience at all and it will be interesting to watch as some of Derek’s girls had training. He dint mean it in a negative way and was praising Derek for his clever choreography and had only nice things to say abt them and also brought the point that there is a koala named Derek now. Dint feel like a diss towards Derek.
I am tolerating Afterbuzz more at this point to.
I agree with Mihti, Sasha would never be unkind to anyone. I think he is very loyal to Derek and respects him greatly. No way was that a diss. He is the most positive loving guy.
This isn’t new, Sara. They’ve even got Sasha toeing the party line now. Very disappointing.
Joanna had NO DANCE TRAINING. Where do you people get these ideas? Because she had ballet when she was 11? Get a grip. Every female on the show (sans Bindi) probably had childhood dance. If you count that, then ALL the men had partners with “experience”. Very silly.
Derek has had MANY partner with neither experience or training – Brooke, Shannon, Jennie, Lil’ Kim, Joanna, Kellie, Maria, Amy, Bethany and Bindi. No, I didn’t include Nastia, because she probably had some experience with choreography at least.
Good god, the idiocy of this topic of Derek’s dance partners, when you compare to VAL’s partners, just pisses me off.
NO WAY!!! NO HOW! NOT SASHA!!!
It may not have been meant as a “diss” mishti, but the intent is still false. If he was saying “it will be interesting to see Derek with a partner with no experience”, he’s just either not been watching the show or has bought into the “Derek’s partners always have training” myth. The *implication* is that this is a new thing, when it’s far from it. It’s disappointing.
No matter how you want to twist it. Sasha as proven his loyalty to Derek and everybody at that show. Not disappointing at all except for the fact you are not giving Sasha the credit he has earned.
Says YOU, lynn. I find it very disappointing and your assertions don’t change my mind at all. This has NOTHING to do with the fact that Sasha has “proven loyalty” to Derek. I also given him all the credit in the world for his work with Nastia – but that doesn’t preclude me being disappointed in him for something else. Only children think in that simplistic a manner. Well, children and hyper fangirls. 🙂
I love Sasha, but, that is disappointing he’d say that. It’s so not true.
I was taken aback at Sasha’s comment about all Derek’s partners except Bindi having some dance training. Subtle put down, but a put down nonetheless. Very disloyal. I’m disappointed in you Sasha. It must be hard for you and the other pros to come to grips with the fact that Derek’s genius abilities in dancing/teaching/choreo cannot be equaled or surpassed, only imitated. I’m sure Baryshnikov got his share of sour grapes as well. Agree wholeheartedly with PH#3.
I just listened to the show, and Sasha said about Derek: “Some of the girls he’s had have had training.” and talking about Bindi having absolutely none. He never said “most have had or all have had.”
I thought Sasha was great, but not surprised by that at all.
I’ve learned not to comment on the show without listening first, because of what others were saying about Suri and Tony and I jumped to the conclusion that they were correct until I listened.
So I wanted to make sure that people were right about Sasha before saying anything, and it definitely seems to be a case of selective hearing. He said, to quote Sasha directly about Derek: “some of the girls he’s had have had training”.
In my opinion, Sasha, or any other pro, is well-advised to “tiptoe around” comments about any of the other pro dancers. After all, they have to work together, if not on DWTS, then in other dance reviews.
Also, Bindi Irwin does, in fact, have some dance experience, although probably no formal training. There’s a YouTube video, uploaded 1/30/2011, showing “Bindi and the Jungle Girls”. She’s dancing onstage at her family’s zoo. Very amateurish and juvenile-looking, and nothing like what she’s doing on DWTS. But still, she’s been onstage and “danced” in front of an audience before.
I think that whole spiel about partners having dance experience should be dropped. Tons of people with past dance experience-Leah, Janel, Danica-failed to win, and lots of stars with NO dance experience have won-Kelly Pickler, Apolo, donald driver, etc. I really think the show is mostly about the adaptability of the pro in being best at bringing out the best in their partner. I really think that that’s why derek has won so many times, because he is by far the most adaptable pro and the best pro at bringing out the best in every single partner and choreographing to their strengths and presenting them the best. He has said that when he first gets a celebrity, he watches them move and dance to try to figure out how they personally dance and move their body. He works with their capabilites, he doesn’t force them to adapt to his, and this is a key difference. Even if you aren’t a derek fan, you can see that he is very talented at this.
He may have thrown a “some of” in there, but it sounds token, in context. In making the point about Bindi having “absolutely none” the implication is still there. Such that many who watched Afterbuzz DID come away with “Sasha said that Derek’s dance partners usually have training”.
It likely wasn’t intentional, but the comments are rather revealing about the prevailing opinion about Derek’s partners, IMO. Why even make that comment?? ALL OF THE MALE PROS have had partners who have had training. By making the comment, he seemingly implies otherwise.
At the end of the day, pros shouldn’t discuss other pros. Period.
We can all take what we want out of a comment, but I think this was only meant as a compliment to both Derek and Bindi.
OMG…here we go again with labeling as experience some childhood BS. Reaching Carol. Really reaching. Ridiculous.
That means, you know, that all of Val’s partners have been professionals in comparison.
Lynn, you better calm down or you will go on moderation. You ARE acting like a hyper fangirl – both of your last two comments which got deleted show that very clearly. Fig and I may not agree on this topic, but we have been discussing rather civilly without your shrill one liners thrown in.
Yes, Fig, we can all take what we want out of a comment. Which is where Lynn is having a little problem.
I agree on one thing here that somehow everyone has it in their mind that Derek gets a trained partners. I still think he was not trying to diss but u r right they always some how try to hint in tat direction and when they say nothing about Val. I thought that last night too why dont they ever mention Val’s partners.
I do not think the comment was intentional. Just a little mad and take a back with it. I never said I dont like Sasha. I still like him.
To me, Sasha is one of the only pros that actually loves and supports all the other pros. He always compliments them all on twitter and doesn’t throw shade like some others. I took his statement as a compliment to Bindi and Derek. His saying some of Derek’s partners have had training wasn’t false so I didn’t mind that at all. I could tell he wasn’t trying to discredit Derek’s work.
Lynn, please drop it.
Lynn, you aren’t the boss here and being demanding is making it all worse. Heidi isn’t even here right now. Please go calm down.
PHeidi #22
I agree that Pros should never make comments about other Pros.
They are their co-workers on this show and everyone should treat each other with respect (as Derek does).
I haven’t listened to AB but guess I better to hear what Sasha said concerning Derek. I hope he doesn’t disappoint me with his words, because after last season, he gained my respect helping Derek by filling in with Nastia and doing a great job. I’m used to Val’s mouth and anything he says, does not surprise me.
So…I watched AB and I enjoyed everyone’s comments. Of course the lifts weren’t mentioned. However, I enjoyed Sasha’s comments since he is a Pro dancer and loved how everyone commented on the good points as well as some improvements of some and of those who need to improve on things like hands and shoulder’s back. All in all I didn’t feel a lot of bias.
And, Sasha said, “Some of Derek’s partners” have had some dance background. Some could be 2 or 3 out of how many seasons. I didn’t feel he was criticizing or throwing a dig towards Derek. Before he even mentioned this he gave a great opinion of Bindi as everyone else did also. He did not hold back on giving her every bit of appraisal she deserves, and complimented Derek on how he choreographed every movement of that dance to tell (show) Bindi’s life and feelings of her father. I loved hearing him say that Bindi is loved by everyone on the show and she is always the same uplifting light.
I love what Sasha said about Terri Irwin, that she, like Bindi, is so considerate and knows everybody’s name and is polite to everybody. He then mentioned that some other people are really rude. I guess some people just can’t be respectful of others regardless of their position on the show. Kudos to Terri for raising her children so well!
I’m pretty sure Sasha meant that only as a compliment towards Bindi and Derek. I think he was just trying to make a point in general that it isn’t easy to train somebody without dance experience in the amount of time they have and they’re doing a good job. Didn’t watch the whole show but I did like him as a guest.
The biggest ringer Derek’s had was Nicole Scherzinger, followed by Jennifer Grey because of who her father is and that movie she was in back in 1987 but not nearly as much as Nicole was. That season, I was rooting for Evan and Anna because I watched him win Olympic Gold and was excited to see a gold medalist. Once Nicole slipped in that final spin of their freestyle, I was sure Evan and Anna had the win 🙁
I wouldn’t call Nastia a ringer because gymnastics and ballet are very different. Now if Derek ever got Misty Copeland…..lol
I just love how people don’t seem to realize that Val gets ringers pretty much every season.
