DWTS Season 21 End With A Bang TV Ratings, Tour Additions And Dances, And More
Just some “end of the season” tidbits. According to Disney ABC, “Dancing with the Stars” will return for its 22nd season in 2016 on MONDAY, MARCH 21 from 8:00-10:01 p.m. ET with an all-new cast of celebrities ready to take on the competition and hit the ballroom floor. They are also promising “another season full of surprises and unforgettable dances”.
As you know from Dancing With The Stars this week, Alek Skarlatos has been added to the DWTS Live: “Dance All Night” Tour. According to a press release, there are still more guest stars to be announced. I wonder who they will be? Also, 6 matinees have been added to the tour according this instagram. For tickets, see this link. Below are some dances that will be featured in it…
I think this dance might be featured too. Not sure?:
Lastly, congratulations to Dancing With The Stars ending the season with a big bang! Our show is alive and well and don’t believe anything otherwise if some source tries to tell you something different. I love how in the seasons past some sources out there tried to report that the show was tanking and wouldn’t be around much longer. Well, let the numbers speak for themselves….again. 😀 And Miss Heidi is an expert on this. She can explain it better than anyone we know…

The link you posted to the official tour instagram isn’t actually official. Just fyi 🙂 .. it’s a fan account.
Maybe it’s not official, but, just FYI, it’s more than just a fan account.

Hi Vogue,
Thank you for the ratings analysis. This season was a big success for DWTS and I’m not surprised at the ratings, because it was more about the celebs and their journeys. I hope we see more of this in future seasons.
And, you are right, Miss Heidi is an expert on that and much more. Her predictions are pretty much spot on, also.
YW and thanks KKat!! 😉
I was a bit concerned about the ratings early-mid season because they were good solid ratings but they had dropped from the last season. However they began to rise again & it definitely ended with a bang. ABC should be very happy with the ratings overall this season for sure
The ratings followed the same trajectory they do every season but, like EVERY season before it, Season 21 was lower than season 19. That is the pattern. People are moving away from broadcast TV as a whole, so it’s not just DWTS. As long as DWTS remains a top 10-20 show, it should be fine. A big name pro like Derek leaving might help as well, since I imagine he and Mark do a good bit better in terms of salary than the rest of them.
I’m so torn about next season. I want to see Derek on my TV every week but I just don’t think anything can top his partnership with Bindi. I have a feeling Mark will come back and I’d be ok with that…I would love to see him win another MBT. I’d also love to see Sasha as pro another season.
Heidi, so you think it might help the show when Derek leaves? I’m surprised you said that because I always thought the producers try to keep him no matter what it costs since he’s such a big drawn to the show.
Of course it won’t help the show from a ratings standpoint, but he’s *expensive*. Him leaving would reduce the cost of the show, in turn making it a bit cheaper to produce, so it can handle any ratings decline. That’s all I meant by it. Of course, it might not reduce the cost by a lot, but every little bit helps. What they’re probably wondering is if losing him is worth any cost savings. I would guess not, but it’s not like they’re going to have a choice.
Heidi, what’s your sense of how some of the “old guard” pros other than Derek and Mark (like Tony and Karina) do salary wise? Also, what about the “mid-guard” pros (Val and Peta) who have been pros long enough that they’ve likely gotten to renegotiate their contracts at some point? Where do you think the various groups fall in on the scale of pro-friendly/network-friendly contracts in terms of what they can be forced to do? I know both Val and Peta go on tour, but do you think they could say no if they wanted to?
No real idea, sonic, and I’m guessing about Derek too. I tend to doubt that any of them besides Mark and Derek (and perhaps Karina, Kym) are in a position to say “no” to anything, and I’m not so sure that either Val or Peta have renegotiated. He’s been on less than five years – he might be on his second contract, he might not. I’ve heard both five YEARS and five SEASONS for the duration. Either way, I doubt that either Val or Peta were in a position of power in terms of negotiating if they are already on contract #2. If they re-up after Season 22, maybe…but part of the negotiating power is having other opportunities – do they?? I’ve not seen it.
I’ve heard that the current contract the pros sign is crap. You’re not paid alot and it’s akin to indentured servitude. Courtney probably remembers more than I do about it, but it ain’t good. I doubt very much that either Derek or Mark are under a similar contract to that any more, since they’ve been on the show since Season 5.
Thanks Heidi! That all makes a lot of sense. Do you think Tony is likely under one of the “indentured servitude” contracts? He’s been on a long time but doesn’t have the same other opportunities to provide the negotiating power.
PH I’m curious to know your take on the whole drama that was created about Shawn and Derek’s S15 quickstep — showing the clip of CAI chastising them for “choosing” to ignore the rules. Derek also commented about it, saying that he caused them to lose the point(s), and they didn’t win. To begin, I had no idea that Derek felt that way. But beyond that, I don’t recall there being any option to change the dance — indeed, to “fix” it would have required a major overhaul. As we’ve previously discussed, that wasn’t even the dance they wanted to do — should have been the paso/tango fusion Shawn performed with Mark. I remember even when she said it at the time, they didn’t have the option to change it as far as I can recall. It bugged me that it was all brought up, but then I thought maybe it was an attempt to give Derek a little redemption arc. Do you think Derek has always felt that breaking the rules may have cost them the win?
I think Derek is a company man, Suzy, toeing the company line. Henry said on Afterbuzz they were going to re-do the fusion. Then, suddenly, they are re-doing the quickstep? Yeah, not at all suspicious. I also was left with the impression that they had to do that one. Whether Derek doesn’t remember or if he’s simply playing into the narrative like a good boy, I don’t know. What I DO know is that Derek has NEVER, before or since, done one dance three times in the same season. He’s against it, it’s not his style….yet he did this time.
I honestly can’t guess on Tony, sonic. I would guess not, but I don’t know if he has as lucrative a contract as Derek probably does.
Fair enough. Thank you!
I would dearly love to see a typical pro dancer contract.
On the one hand, these dancers get exposure to millions of people each week and sometimes become more well known than some of the celebs on the show.
On the other hand, the pros are a big part of the show’s appeal. They are responsible for teaching, choreographing (sometimes with help), and designing their celebs dance. It’s a big job. I think they should get paid better.
I would totally be fine with cutting back expenditures by easing up on the elaborate visuals and sets and all the extraneous dancers on the show who make me say “Who dat?” on a regular basis.
Sometimes I feel like I’m morphing into grumpy, old fashioned Len when I think about the direction the show is moving in.
