Private Members Area – DWTS Season 22 Week 6 Discussion
It’s time for the Dancing with the Stars Season 22 week 6 and you know what that means. Time to enjoy some friendly, educated banter with the Pure DWTS Insiders. If you’re not a Pure DWTS Insider yet, you can do so here. If you are, then I look forward to the discussion in the comments.
This week DWTS pays tribute to iconic dance performances from music videos, films, and live performances. What did you think? Great idea or iconic fail? How did the band do with all the iconic songs?
I’m sure we have to talk about the introduction of bollywood. Interesting that 4 people have Jazz and 1 contemporary as well. That means that 6 of the 9 dances aren’t ballroom dances and so Len knows nothing about them. Can he even be a judge this week?
How about the elimination? Surprised? Shocked? Happy? Don’t be shy and don’t be afraid to have a different view than others. We can all feel differently about who and what we like and don’t like.
Keo is a disaster waiting to happen. Jodi deserves a better partner. I think she would have been great with Artem this season.
Okay, I really was sick to my stomach tonight! The judicious editing of packages to try and show some in a negative light (Nyle) and make others looks like the Second Coming (Antonio) was out of control! I sure wish I could understand their investment in AB, is Rob from Pittsburgh or something? LOL!
I’m really worried about Paige; hopefully her being in jeopardy rallied the troops! I voted more than I have so far this season to try and help out! All I know is that if Antonio makes the finals and other better and harder working people don’t, I may just not even watch the finale show. That phony smirk on his face….yuck! And they actually kinda threw Sharna under the bus to make him look good!
I enjoyed, Wayna, Paige, Kim and NylLe. Jodie was good, but the dance was a tad uncomfortable to watch (I never saw the video, guess I live under a rock) and the rest were forgettable to me.
Ok I’m not gonna hold back here are some of my thoughts: I enjoyed the night’s performances as I have the whole season but I’m not overly excited. I gotta say I think the season is missing Derek. He sets the bar pretty high and besides he has a great attitude and spirit. The routines and most of the pros are just floating. Thank goodness for Mark, Sasha,Lyndsay and the troupe! The opening number tonight was an improvement but then Val comes in with the Speedo things…..what is that! Awful, completely ruined the dance, Mandy Moore what are you thinking??
Last season’s iconic dances didn’t have half the leeway as tonight’s dances and only half of tonight’s were memorable. Besides TPTB really gave a lot of package time to the outside choreographers but only to pimp certain celebrities. This doesn’t surprise me though after all these years. Anyway my favorite little dance show is loosing me, gotta try and hang in there. Hope I don’t sound to much like a downer!!
I liked Paige, Wanya, Jodie, and Kim’s dances.Other than that this week’s show left me rather bitchy and cranky.
Nyle’s got a royal hosing between the package and the judge’s comments. So not necessary EXCEPT… oh yeah they need to narrow the field for Antonio or Von. Sorry neither of them really deserve a spot in the finals and if it has to be then at least make it Von.
Antonio may have it on the field but in my book he is a giant ass! That package made me want to vomit! He’s in it to win it? Are you kidding me? What a crock! But they made Nyle out to be the arrogant one??!! Nyle works his butt off and doesn’t find the need to post endless crap to Social Media, even if he is a damn site more interesting and 1000x better looking!
So double elimination next week. Please God send that idiot packing!! (Rant over)
Oh and I too loved the opening number. I guess Val was a shout out to Risky Business but I could have done without Val dancing in his underwear. It ceases to be sexy when he walks around half dressed at every opportunity as it is. So over the stupidity!
I was happy with all the dances this week. I loved all the costumes too. I’m still cracking up at Mark Ballas. His TEETH! OMG! So funny!
My favorite routine from last night was Paige/Mark, Wanya/Lindsay and Jodie/Keo. Gave all my phone votes to Jodie. Voting on FB for Paige and will vote on ABC for Wanya.
I liked Antonio’s routine. Didn’t like how TPTB threw Sharna under the bus to make Antonio look good. Not quite understanding that edit but I’m sure it must have something to do with his popularity among Steeler Nation. I think if he’d been putting in the time in the early weeks, that routine would’ve been far more polished and sharp by Antonio. I’m over him. I was so excited to see how he’d do but he’s been a major disappointment. :/
I just don’t get why they want to make Antonio happen. I didn’t think he was that good tonight. I don’t know much about dance, but Antonio looked completely off a few times tonight and the judges just seemed to ignore all of it. Yet one little mistake by anyone else is nitpicked to death.
I really hope he doesn’t make it to the finals. I’d actually like to see him eliminated next week in the double elimination. I feel bad for Sharna, but let Wanya/Nyle/Paige win it this year and give Sharna a ringer next season (if their goal is to get her a win). I’m sure there will be some great Olympians to choose from for the fall.
Maybe Antonio was paid a lot of money to do the show and they just want to get their money’s worth
I loved Paige and Mark’s costumes. The wardrobe department did an excellent job.
I wasn’t a fan of Nyle’s costume nor was I a fan of his dance. I was thinking that maybe the whole mask thing may have hampered his ability to focus to stay on time. That was his worst performance of the season.
And that leads me to Wanya!! Was that a freestyle? This dance should have closed the show last night. What a performance. WOW!
Can I just go on record that to me the stars of last night were the troupe. I was amazed at them. My favorite male is Shannon followed by Dennis. I am not sold on Jenna or Hayley but I enjoyed them last night. I also loved the extra ladies (Tracey, Brit). I also thought Nick & Jason did great.
I am wondering though, why aren’t the eliminated pros being used more rather than extra troupers? We saw Artem last night in Von’s routine but I didn’t see Edyta or Tony. Just seems odd to me.
I am glad Doug went. He is a great guy and a hard worker but this just isn’t his forte. I think Karina did great with him
So Antonio-he is just Ick to me at this point but personality aside I thought the Footloose number Sharna cooked up was cute. His execution was better than before IMO. Probably because all the comments pissed him off. Did I mention I love Dennis & Shannon? They stood out to me in this number.
And Von. For such a huge man, I was blown away at his MJ attempt. Rock on Von. I don’t think he belongs in the finals but I gotta say that the man has heart.
I thought Paige and Wanya did amazing last night. I felt like Nyle took a step back. I think the mask hurt him and the speed of the dance but why why did he say those things? Creative editing aside, to say none of the celebs are your competition. Uggh. I’m worried it’s going to hurt him.
Mad props to Jodie & Kim for work ethic, pain tolerance and just balls!!
Keo Keo Keo. Dude, what is your problem. How do you walk out on Kim to go pout or sulk or whatever. She executed brilliantly what she was given. Not her fault. He should have been telling her how she was great and the choreo was his fault rather than going off in a huff. Shades of the C bros and I don’t like it.
I was glad Ginger didn’t get butt kissed. I agreed with the judges. You didn’t feel the fire in the performance. She executed but it just wasn’t there. Seemed like a lot of walking too
Edyta was in the opening number and Tony played Corny Collins, plus he was the co-host for All Access, Herbie.
Just curious but I saw online that Mark’s original number was Paula Abdul’s Opposite’s Attract. True?
True, Colleen. And where do you suppose those people got that info?? 🙂
Stormviking on tumblr was where I saw it.
I have a question about the “in jeopardy” thing. Why would TPTB put a couple in jeopardy, ostensibly to “warn” fans that they might not be getting enough votes, if their preferred winner was someone else? Why would they put Paige and Mark in jeopardy, for example, when they are twisting themselves in knots to rehab Antonio’s game? Isn’t that working against their desired result?
Suzy,
Are we sure it’s their desired results? I think we assume a lot about desired results that isn’t necessarily true. I think the producers want drama and ratings (and the drama is about ratings). That’s their desired result. They’re going to do what they think is going to provide those. On eliminations they often put someone in jeopardy to tell a certain storyline that they think will keep the ratings up. For example, putting a favorite “in jeopardy” is a way for the casual viewer to think that anyone could go home even if that’s not the case. For the producers it’s all about ratings and a good storyline is what they’re looking for from my experience.
I did recently hear the producers of The Voice at the NAB show in Vegas. It was insightful about how they can influence the feel of the show. They said that they try to keep the show authentic, but simple things like piping in more applause or less applause he said can really impact how you feel about a performance. He said something like, A performance with less applause can feel really flat and when they screen it people will say they didn’t like that person very much. Then, they do the exact same performance with more applause and the audience feels like it was a compelling and dynamic performance.
Lots of tools like this in the producers’ toolbox.
That whole Antonio whitewash was bought hook, line and sinker by the friends I watch the show with. But then again, these are the friends who believed Maks and Meryl were meant for each other…
I’m thinking they are the casual viewers TPTB are aiming at, and score solid hits with. *sigh*
They’ve always done it Suzy and it often works. I think they do it because they want certain people to stick around longer for a variety of reasons, not the least of which having the best dancers there at the end. It’s about credibility. But we’re guessing as always.
The fact that they know such things and discuss such things, John, pretty clearly indicates that they have USED those things. And Probably not in the nicest of ways. So it’s really not a stretch to think that they use “jeopardy” for a huge variety of reasons.
I agree 100% that they’ve used those things. Although, they do it all in the name of ratings. I think it’s pretty rare that they do it for other reasons. Of course, we could argue over whether their motivation is good for ratings or not. I’m sure they make mistakes and there are unintended consequences to the decisions they make. On America’s Got Talent it was much worse. They literally had people writing the storylines. You could see how obvious on the taped episodes the questions from the judges were so they could tell a certain story/angle for that participant.
Anyone else trying to post stuff and it doesn’t go through – just disappears?
Anyone else having issues posting from Chrome? I’ve had four posts and a private message disappear on Pure.
But in their mind, having the best dancers in the finale is a credibility issue, which can be connected to the ratings in a significant way. But it’s a slippery slope – if someone really loves a – say – Bill Engvall and they start to see the man behind the curtain trying to get rid of Bill, then your ratings start to slide because people realize their votes don’t really count.
Who is the guy with the pony tail in the opening in number? He also danced in Kim’s, Von’s and Sharna’s.
I really enjoyed most of the dances this week. The only one that seemed slightly disappointing to me was Ginger & Val’s dance. Too precise/sharp with her movements (like stated too cheerleader-y). I think she could have done better with Rhythm Nation? I thought Paige looked fab in her costume and Peta was a knockout as Cameron Diaz. The double elimination is gonna smart next week. Somebody good is going to go home too soon.
Did I see flashes of Mischa Barton in the audience a couple times? Glad to see her come back and see her there (if it was her) and having a good time. Whoever it was, she was always smiling when the camera showed her.
Yes, it was Mischa – she looked much happier as an audience member than contestant.
Just testing something out – I can’t post under my regular username. For several days, nothing shows up when I hit submit. I’ve tried different browsers and rebooting my computer. I can’t even submit a message via the private contact form.
@julie
I think you are referring to Nick Baga. He is a shorter guy, with sort of a man bun. He was in the can can bumper
In rewatching the episode from Monday, I realized AB nearly fell in his routine. Seriously the only thing that stopped him was Sharna and he almost toppled her. For the judges not to point that out is crap just irks me
Back in S18 when Sharna & Charlie did that crazy technical paso and the judges crapped on it because Charlie lost his balance!! Then Antonio nearly topples with Sharna and they say nothing. UGH
I think the judges are trying to set up a Von vs AB elimination. That seems to be thier thing in recent seasons (Meryl vs Charlie, Carlos vs Alexa). Maybe they are just propping AB up until they can do that.
Sorry Fig. I just wrote to John. I don’t know why that’s happening.
Yay, looks like my posts are showing up now – weird, for the last few days they disappeared. Hopefully I don’t have a bunch of gibberish and duplicate comments out there. 🙂 Thanks Vogue and John!
Err, nevermind – it’s not working again. 🙁
Weird that some of the comments aren’t showing up.
One last try! Everything is crossed!
Yeah!! Finally figured it out. Now we won’t miss your scandalous discussions 🙂
Wangs!
LOL John. Good job getting everything fixed!
Any news on how the Team dances are going? I think I’m the most excited for the James Brown medley.
I like wangs.
Thank heaven Fig mentioned her posting problems and John got whatever was going wrong fixed. I had the same trouble a couple days ago but have been too swamped at work and home to follow up.
Cidra – I noticed that you hadn’t posted for a few days so I wondered if you were having the same problems I was – and apparently that was the case. John did a bunch of troubleshooting so it’s all fixed – yay!
Hey all, sorry for the absence – was feeling particularly under-the-weather this week, and this is the first day that I’ve actually felt good 🙂
Got a few tidbits on the team dances…
…source thinks the girls may pull this one out, as their dance seems to have a lot more…well, actual dancing than the guys’. The girls’ dance is actually kind of ambitious in that they seem to have ditched the formula of having the group dance together a bit, have everyone do a solo, and then the group finishes together, and instead have everyone dancing at the same time for the bulk of the dance…as well as a partner switch at one point. I think it’s risky, in that the more you have everyone on the floor at the same time = more need for synchronicity = greater opportunity for getting out-of-sync. But at the same time, after 16 seasons of team dances, I guess it’s time for them to start shaking things up a little, so this is probably a calculated risk. The guys’ team seems to be relying more on personality to sell the dance – seems to be a lot of posing and attitude, and not as much actual dancing as the girls. Source prefers the girls’ dance for the simple reason that there’s more actual dancing, but says that overall, these team dances are pretty blah in the grand scheme of things. Kinda makes me wonder if my hypothesis about Derek’s absence is correct…
…source also mentioned that production just can’t seem to ditch the old narrative of “someone on the winning team usually doesn’t get sent home!” and are making the couples parrot this nonsense on camera, despite the fact that the two eliminated couples have already been determined before the team dances have even been performed. Old habits die hard, I guess.
Sorry to hear you’ve been under-the-weather, Courtney, but glad you’re feeling better and thanks for the tidbits!
Interesting strategy by the girls’ team. I hope it pays off for them/doesn’t backfire. I would much rather see actual dancing that is slightly out-of-sync than a bunch of posing.
Oh, that stupid narrative. On top of the fact that the people going home tomorrow have already been determined, ever since they got rid of the results show, every single elimination the week after the Team Dances (aka the one where the Team Dance results are actually a factor), the eliminated couple had been on the winning team the week before (or in the case of the tie in Season 20, Derek’s team)
Court, that is interesting about the team dances. I would agree that they need to shake it up a bit and not do the predictable thing after so many seasons. I kinda hope the woman do pull it off as IMO most people seem to think the guys have it in the bag! I figured that with James Brown, the guys would be counting on “attitude” more than dancing. I’ll be interested to see how Nyle does; he’s been great when it’s just he and Peta on the floor, but I have to wonder how it will be with 6 additional people moving about. Then again, he’s amazed me other weeks, so maybe he will do it again.
And what will TPTB do since they no longer have the Derek team narrative to dwell on? It sounds like they are harping on no one from the winning team usually goes home (although Hayes went home last year). And this year with a double elimination, that scenario hopefully won’t come to pass. I don’t w at to lose two females this week, although my fear is that if a guy goes, it will be Von and I have really gown to like him.
Thank You, Courtney for the update on the Team Dances. Yes, they need to shake it up a bit and come up with something knew. And, also, I am one of the ones who feels that Derek Hough has left “huge” whole in DWTS this season, because he always was OTT choreographing a Team Dance. They definitely have their work cut out.
Well, he wasn’t OTT last season – Allison was. Thanks to the producers constant harping on Derek never losing, I think he was pretty hamstrung by the pressure in addition to the crap songs he had been getting. IF he were ever to come back to the show (looking more doubtful all the time), there would likely be no stopping him now that that narrative is gone.
Are there any parameters for what is considered a “shocking elimination”? For example, since Paige was in jeopardy last week, does that disqualify her as a SE (since it shouldn’t be shocking since she was in jeopardy), or will it still be considered a SE since in general her scores and quality of dancing were so high?
The only parameter HERE is if anyone would actually be surprised by the elimination. The literal “shock”. The producers, though, label lots of things “shocking” that are not shocking to us.
I guess this will be the week were we really see who is getting the votes or not.
With the producers already knowing who is going home, while still pushing their narrative… Are we in for a surprise elimination? Or is just a boatload of BS?
Court, sorry to here you’ve been feeling puny! Hope you’re back on form now.
The team dance model has become rather formulaic and I haven’t been particularly interested in them lately. So I’m thrilled to hear “Team Woman” is trying something different. I assumed the girls’ team would take the easy route and just do a standard bump and grind. Instead it looks like it’s the boys who have opted for the ho-hum routine.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the women put together. I just hope The Stooges don’t nit-pick it to bits if they get a little out of sync. My guess is CAI will get all bitchy with the women and then her vj will take over and she’ll fawn all over the guys because they were ‘so hot’ *barf*
It all comes down to the choreographer and Team Woman has male choreographers who don’t usually resort to the bump and grind. And without Allison, it’s possible that Team Men is suffering from a lack of creativity.
Well, if the men are “so hot” I daresay they didn’t do a very good recreation of James Brown. Overall when I think of Team Men dancing as a group, the expression “herding cats” comes to mind.
The “sexy” men or “sexy” women thing is odd to me. I mean I’d normally be totally sexist and support Team Women because I prefer women to men. However, that doesn’t acknowledge that Team men has a group of incredibly beautiful professional dancers. In fact, it’s likely that if I’m choosing to be sexist in my vote and support women, then I’ll support Team Man because of their partners who are generally more attractive than the female stars.
Of course, I would never base my own personal vote on things like looks or gender. I push my support for the artistic ability of the teams. It’s about supporting the art of dance.
Your right John. If I was going for the sexy, the female pros have the male pros beat by a mile. So I’d have to vote Team Men. 🙂 And I’m a lady.
LOL, Suzy! Very nice. I could see that group of male celebs being a tough bunch to get moving in the same direction.
John, you are a model of virtue and restraint. 😉 I too would never give my vote based on something as shallow as looks or sex appeal. However, I’m not above appreciating those qualities (in both men and women) while I’m deciding who deserves my support based on the quality of their dancing.
