Maks And Val Chmerkovskiy “Our Way” Reviews & Photos, Dancing Expresses Their Story In Ways Words Could Not Have

Just a couple of reviews on Maks And Val Chmerkovskiy’s “Our Way” Tour. The WAE said the venue was completely full. They report “the performance was a beautiful story, told in a unique and fitting way.”. Here is a little more….

The two charismatic brothers with a passion for dance came together in their autobiographical show, “Maks and Val: Our Way.” The duo visited Wilmington as part of a 48-city tour. The theater was packed, with not a seat left empty.

Bright lights, moving stage props and fog machines added ambience. Large monitors played video clips throughout of Maks, Val and their father, while visuals and graphics added interest to the performance. Val even showcased his violin talents, while Maks and a group of dancers performed to his music.

The show’s first setting was in Ukraine, where the brothers grew up and first started taking dance classes. Moving forward, the family moves to Brooklyn, where the Chmerkovskiy family immigrated in 1994 in search of the American dream. The show continued on, depicting the struggles the family faced in a new country.

Although Maks and Val were sure to add comedy and seduction to the show, they took a more serious approach when emphasizing the importance of family in their upbringing. “This show is the story of our family,” said Val. Maks added, “Our family is the nucleus of who we are.”

Lighthearted jokes and comedic skits were integrated throughout the show in order to soften tough moments and engage the audience. One lucky woman, Tina, was even invited onto the stage for a sexy dance with Maks.

During the finale, Val performed the last number, solo. Even in that large, noisy room, you could hear his feet passionately tapping against the dance floor.

More at The WAE including some beautiful shots of Val and Maks.

Also, Richmond.com has published a piece that describes what the show is about. Here’s a little take (I think we posted something similar. I can’t remember for sure now).

The two acknowledge they have arguments like other siblings, and that they are very different personally, but they always fall back on the values their parents instilled in them.

“That’s the massive point: family first,” Maks said. After they see the show, “I want parents to look at their kids and say, ‘See, this is what I want your relationship with your sibling to be like.’ ”

The brothers will share the stage with 10 top professional dancers with skills in styles that range from hip-hop to ballroom.

“We want to do for ballroom what the play ‘Hamilton’ is doing for Broadway — provide a fresh perspective,” Val said.

During their careers, the brothers have each made a name for themselves.

“After being on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ I went from being Maks’ little brother to Valentin,” Val said. “It’s not me plus one or him plus one. We could each have our own production, but that doesn’t make sense to us.

“This might be the last time we get to perform together before we move on in our lives. This is a great opportunity to have a dream come true. Not a lot of siblings get to work in the same field together. How lucky are we?”
