Val Chmerkovskiy Gives “First Look” Into Dancing With The Stars Season 23 On GMA, Names Some Pros And More
Val Chmerkovskiy was a guest on Good Morning America today to chat about Dancing With The Stars Season 23. He gives a “first look” to the new promo. He mentions how different pros are coming back. For now, they name Sharna Burgess, Witney Carson, Lindsay Arnold, Allison Holker, Artem Chigvinstev, Gleb Savchneko, and Sasha Farber as Pros who will be dancing (which we revealed in the Pro Watch post). He also mentioned how there will be kids dancing on the show (not sure if he means in performances or as a celeb?). He also said he’s still waiting to meet his partner. Note that there will be more Dancing With The Stars teasers and announcements released on Good Morning America in the next days leading up to the cast reveal next Tuesday. More below and thanks to @idolxfactor1 for recording.
ETA: Note that this article from ABC says there will be 13 Celebs this upcoming season as there has been in many Fall seasons in the past.

ETA2: A larger video of the promo. I can see Gleb and Keo a little better, but, I wish they’d show them all clearer and closer. Maybe they will in other promos later?
Didn’t he say a week or two ago that he had already been talking to his partner??
lol I think so.
@Princess Hedi
Exactly my thoughts! Can you say pathological liar lol
So did Val pull a Ryan Lochte and exaggerate about talking to his partner already? Well well well.
Sorry ladies, I think I was posting at the same time and hadn’t read your comments.
I could have just said, I concur.
KIDS?! Did I just hear kids?! Nope, nix, nada, nein. Why has every show gone with kids? Hayes and Willow were fine but ugh I just am not a fan of kids on TV shows.
I think there is some confusion, he never said he met his partner. He stated that he was speaking with his partner while he was on tour. There is a difference between meeting and talking to. GMA asked him if he met his partner yet and he said not yet.
I am one of the apparent minority of DWTS viewers that find Val unlikeable and almost unwatchable. Seeing this promo made me wonder what TPTB see in him that I don’t. It puzzles me that he is being used as the brand ambassodor/spokesperson for DWTS on ABC.
Given the insight the moderators have into the mechanics of DWTS, does anyone know what kind of metrics (if any) are used at DWTS to evaluate the pros? I know that there is some degree of subjectivity in casting, but most other businesses (outside entertainment) use metrics to measure success. Do they use a Q score or some other kind of marketing measures?
@ms Anne: I think Val amassed a large fan base compliments of Zendaya during her season and they are the very vocal fans. In fact, the producers have consistently given him partners with the same type of fans to build him up. Now he has aligned himself with Jenna, who also has a pack of young, active fans.. Obviously that following doesn’t translate into ratings, or ratings woukdnt be in decline if he were all that, but ABC seems to be banking on him as leader of the pack now that Derek left.
@ Ms. Anne
I think that Val is sill living off of Maks popularity on the show. Even though Maks never won until they gave him the ringiest ringer ever, he has always been popular on the show for his bad boy schtick and generally being an intense hotblooded hothead who thinks of himself as “sex on a stick”. And he slowly brought his little brother into it who basically took over the popular Chmerkovskiy spot when Maks left…
Nygel may have dropped some hints about it on SYTYCD last night but my guess is it will be some of those kids performing bumpers and/or acting as extras.
But he said he was texting his partner!!
i think the kids dancing thing is maybe SYTYCD next generation making a guest appearance … and i hope it will be that because to be honest Iam not a fan of kids celebs doing the show
And to be clear other than Nygel’s nod to the fact some DWTS pros were on SYTYCD and that it was nice to see Mark and other DWTS pros return the favor nothing SPECIFIC was said just what I think he MIGHT have meant. I could be wrong.
IMO Val will never be as popular as Maks.
Does GMA think Val is the face of DWTS? God help us all and pass the liquor bottle.
I also have a big question mark on how the producers keep putting Val as the “face” of this show. I don’t think it’s the wisest/smartest think to do on tptb part. I was drawn to watch this show at the beginning mostly because of the ability of the pros to choreograph and make the celebs appeared to be a pro regardless of their dancing background, the pros ability to teach, be serious but having fun at the same time. I think this is why Julianne and Derek excel. I have no doubt they attracted many viewers to this show. Julianne wasn’t only pretty and sexy but she can teach and choreograph interesting piece. Karina and Cheryl does too. Derek can make someone like Lil Kim, Joanna Krupa, Ricki Lake, Bethany Mota and even Amy Purdy looked like pros. I never considered Derek as producers favorite. He earned the title as the best pro on the show because of his talent and ability to choreograph that fit into his partners ability. That takes genius. And I must say Derek is such a comedian too. I don’t know how many times I laugh watching his interaction with his celebs. Val, on the other hand, keeps getting someone with dance background, getting pimped every season and when he throws tantrum and tweet about it, producers seems to be afraid and starts pampering him again and again. It gets tiring. I can only imagine once the show unable to find any decent celebs, many viewers will turn away because of “same ol’ same ol'”. Let’s just hope Mark stays for a long time, Lindsey keep producing awesome choreo, Sasha and Allison stepping up, and Gleb brings fresh air to this almost boring show. How I miss Derek, the “golden boy” of DWTS. 🙂
No, piper, you’re splitting hairs. You can “meet” people over the phone – people do business over the phone all the time. So, is Val going to go up to his partner and pretend they’ve never spoken and say “nice to meet you”?? That would be so inaccurate.
Ms. Anne, I can only imagine the metrics, but as we’ve been saying for a couple years now, they’ve been working REALLY hard on making Val the it guy, ever since they wisely realized that Derek wasn’t going to last forever. But you shouldn’t have to work that hard at it. That said, people start to buy it after a while – I don’t think the show will ever get another Derek, but they got to have SOMEONE and Mark’s eye is on a music career. Interesting that Gleb is back, no? 😀
I always feel bad for Mark when all the fawning over Val by TPTB and the media starts. Mark and Val are the same age but Mark has been on the show twice as along as Val and has produced so much more memorable stuff than him and still gets always pushed aside for poser Val and his abs…
Val has less than 300k followers on twitter and 800k on instagram – his fanbase ain’t all that. If it were, he would have sold out all those small venues that he and Maks performed in.
He has a good number of fans….for a dancer on a reality TV show. It’s all your perspective.
Way back when, when we were complaining about Maks all the time, I never thought that I would vastly prefer Maks as a pro over his little, highly obnoxious, brother.
But if Maks is back as a judge?? All bets are off. This show just might become unwatchable. And that will give me a sad.
That’s an interesting idea about the SYTYCD kids making a guest appearance – but it would be a bit unusual, since they are on a competing network. This is a show that will hire pros from there, but they won’t take celebs from other networks. Hard to say. That said, as much as I like the kids on SYTYCD, if DWTS goes that route I may vomit.
I may be way more disgruntled this season than ever before…watch out. 😉
Look at it this way, Geri. By pushing Val to the front, Mark has a lot of time to focus outside of DWTS – and that’s probably what he wants. He’s one of the pros who’s been on the show long enough to negotiate his way out of some of the grunt work (like that thing last week at the Grove) if he wants to. Don’t feel too bad for him – I think he’s getting what he needs from DWTS – a springboard to bigger and better things.
I had not heard that Maks might be a judge. Ugh. When he’s been a guest judge, he has made no effort to be impartial. Why would dwts do that?
I think talking to your partner and meeting them are two different things. Value may have talked to his partner but have not met her?
Sorry I meant Val
There is nothing about Val that I like. I avoid watching him as much as possible.
I’m surprised that Val is the sole face of DWTS and not Witney. They each have 1 trophy but she’s more positive, attractive and a better interview.
I think he said “younger kids” meaning the younger pros representing the younger generation (Linds, Witney, maybe Jenna etc) vs the “classic”, more seasoned pros, like Tony, Mark and Val as well (it’s gonna be his 12th season). I don’t think he meant actual kids lol
Oops, it’s gonna be S23, I thought it was S24, so it’s gonna be Val’s 11th season.
Val is a nice guy but he looks like squid ward
TPTB are trying way too hard with Val. At this point, can they just ditch him and go to someone with a lot more potential? Like maybe Sasha? No one on the show is particularly bad looking, and I certainly don’t think that Val’s the best looking of the bunch. Among females, I think Sharna is getting the same treatment Val is, but I don’t notice it as much because Sharna is able to somewhat consistently give the good choreography and teaching. This season, I’m willing to bet money that Val and Sharna will get ringers, Mark and Witney will get celebs that do well on paper, and who knows for everyone else.
Glad to see Lindsay is back. Hope Ruby Castro will make at least a guest appearance!☺
I don’t know that Maks will be a judge – I’m just living in fear of it and won’t breathe easy until everything is announced.
🙂
Again, splitting hairs. Not surprising, really.
Well, that would be really condescending of him to call any other pro “kid” – Mark could then call him a “kid”, right? Bet he wouldn’t be thrilled.
Thanks all for comments regarding Val as spokesperson. Good to know that I am not the only one mystified by this decision. I know that TPTB have been pushing him for several seasons, but at least to my eyes he isn’t “happening” and the constant pimping has gotten very tiresome. I will continue to wonder what info TPTB have about Val and his appeal to the desired audience.
As far as the season goes — I hesitate to ask this, but is there any possibility that Maks be one of the “old pros” returning?
Princess Heidi — if I end up hate watching this season I hope that you are disgruntled, because misery loves company! At least I will be able to come here and read clever snarky commentary to alleviate my annoyance with the show.
I think for me the most cringeworthy part of that of that promo was at the end when Ginger Zee called Val “baby” and said she likes to see him front and centre. Ick.
I actually think TPTB are pushing Witney more than Sharna. Sometimes lately I get the feeling like DWTS is getting that younger demographic they’ve been after and at times it feels like the show has changed to suit a younger audience. I seriously hope this season doesn’t suck as I’m looking forward to it.
I’m glad, Ms. Anne – it’s not as fun to be disgruntled alone. 🙂
I didn’t see Mark :/ i know he wasprobably busy so he couldn’t make it but he should have been in the promo… he is the one who supposed to be in the front not Val ! SMH
Val will never, ever be his brother…. I wish he would move on already…
I really just want August 30th to be here and quit the guessing games. If it’s anything like last season, we should know pretty much everyone by this Friday or next Monday anyway. There won’t be a thing to reveal on Tuesday.
I totally agree with all of you who can’t stand Val and don’t think he should be representing DWTS. I don’t understand why tptb keeps trying to make Val happen either. He doesn’t have what it takes to be the next Derek. He’s not good looking or charming and he doesn’t have any original or interesting choreography.
Gleb, on the otherhand, does have potential to provide the show with some excitement now that Derek left. At least, Gleb is good looking. I don’t remember how charasmatic he is or how his choreo skills are.
