DWTS Season 23, Week 7 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?
My cynical side (which is more than a “side” at this point and more like 2 thirds), says that “Decades” week is a cluster f@#k waiting to happen. I mean really, there are some craptastic decades for music and this is a show that has real trouble picking appropriate music when NOT limited to specific decades.
ETA: Running order is up. Tentative on team dances – apparently Team Future went first in rehearsal, but George didn’t indicate whether they were also going first during the actual show. Judging from the way the running order is set up, I’m guessing they end up calling Ryan, Marilu, Maureen, & Jana in jeopardy – two members of each team. -Court-

“Cheek to Cheek” for Terra and Sasha? Sounds like someone’s idea of a joke. Looking forward to Calvin and James’ dances.
Seems like it’s been forever since Jitterbug was a style on the show. Looking forward to that.
Maureen and Artem’s song isn’t as bad as when they had Robert and Kym tango to Word Up, so there’s that.
The fun thing is, I actually know all these songs.
Judging by the decades, I think we may already have the running order for Monday’s show (since S20’s Eras Night dances were also in chronological order). So just like in the premiere, Marilu goes first and Ryan gets the pimp spot.
Eras night does not really bode well with me. Too many themes ? I feel like Ryan and Cheryl got the short end of the stick and kinda just threw the 90s at em and a rumba? Ryan is too goofy for that…And I can just see the judges docking points for Cheryl dancing around him. I hope they don’t perform right before the Team Dances; may cause them to be quite unforgettable. Fingers crossed the pass elim.
Actually looking forward to what Lindsay brings out of Calvin. Weird because she mentioned they have jive, but did they switch to jitterbug? Or are they using those two terms loosely?
Jana got a 70s samba…do TPTB want her in the finals?
Can’t wait to see Marilu and Derek’s charleston! Hopefully they can perform all the steps in sync. She does seem to excel out of hold more so now as well.
I wish Laurie had charleston.. I think that would be a good dance for her
Ewww… I don’t like Derek and Marilu’s song. The tune is not very pleasing… I had to stop the video mid-way.
And will they go first because their song is the earliest decade?
Double sucks, if true.
The last person who did a jitterburg was S19 . Hope that the couples who dance in the first hour won’t be underscore. Looking foward to James,Calvin and Marilu dance.
Have to agree w/Terra and Sasha song “Cheek to Cheek” being some kind of joke that TPTB thinks is funny. It will be more like “Cheek to Crotch.” The song Jana and Gleb have “Get Down Tonight” seems real appropriate for them. Calvin and Lindsey’s jive should be good and I think that Marilu and Derek will kill the Charleston although I don’t care much for the song. I wonder if TPTB will put Laure in the front of the pack to dance next Monday. Somehow I doubt it.
I actually enjoyed the Era dances in seasons 9 & 10, but since then they’ve for the most part gone downhill.
Okay some of these choices are kind of ironic! Terra and Sasha with Cheek to Cheek and of course Jana gets a song to be “sexed” up to; man TPTB just can’t help themselves can they? I sure hope they can resist going chronologically by decade as that would give Marilu a second first with Laurie probably at the top of the second hour.
THERE IS NO EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST THE COUPLES WILL DANCE IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. Chill.
The press release says: “The couples will dance to the following songs (in timeline order)” which makes me think they are going in order with Marilu starting and Ryan closing. Who knows, though
Sorry, Court- posted at the same time as you and din’t see your response. Not trying to be snarky
Songs are interesting choices. All pretty good but Ryan and Cheryl have my fav of the bunch and the fav era (90s baby here lol).
James and Sharna and “In the Mood” and Jitterbug sounds like a showstopper.
Looking forward to Calvin and Lindsay’s jive. Hoping the judges won’t low ball them again.
Also looking forward to James and Sharna’s jitterbug, I love “In the Mood” great song.
@Chris, of course? Why would they not get scores? I don’t think TPTB would let that source of manipulation, drama, rivalry get away from them.
EmnEm, ease up – I think Chris was asking an honest question, as someone who probably isn’t super-familiar with the show. I don’t think he was implying anything.
Yes, Chris, it will get scored, and each person on the team will get the same score – so if the judges give the team a score of 26, each person on the team will get 26 added to their point total for the week. Tends to benefit weaker dancers, but may hurt stronger dancers – the major deciding factor seems to be how well they stay in-sync during portions of the dance when they’re all on the floor at the same time. If one couple goes off-time, it can affect the score for the entire team.
I don’t know what to think till I actually see the performances next Monday – but I think I somewhat enjoyed eras week in season 20.
I would like to say, I’m happy DWTS learnt from their mistakes and this time gave credit to using the Post Modern Jukebox cover. I’m a huge fan of theirs and this platform can open their music to a new audience.
I was honestly quite mad when Riker and Allison used their song for the quickstep without any credit, and that actually stopped me from being a fan of theirs for a few weeks.
Ouch,Lifts for James…Scared because I haven’t seen him do a lift yet I dont think? And I don’t remember a Sharna Jitterbug! ? I hope he does well and I can assumedly look forward to Julianne picking on Calvin about pointing his toes smh…She is quite predictable. Also I hope Gleb sports a fake Magnum P.I stache’ GOOD LORD! And Jana can do whatever ? That’s it all…
My OCD will really kick in if they don’t do this in chronological order like they did on Season 20. Lol
Every time I hear “Good Golly Miss Molly” I just can’t help but to think of Kyle and Lacey’s Jive. Now, I’m not saying it was the best Jive ever done, but it is to me one of the most fun and memorable ones. Hope Calvin can do it justice.. I have a feeling he’ll be fine.
Really love Maureen, Jana, Ryan and James’ songs and on the flip side, really not a fan of Marilu and Laurie’s. Why go for a Scott Bradlee 1920’s cover of a popular song instead of an ACTUAL 1920’s Charleston song? Probably an issue with the rights and all that I guess. And then Laurie’s song is just so boring I don’t see how it can be something memorable.
Hope James can pull off the lifts for the Jitterbug .. He has the energy for the dance.
Finally gonna see if Jana can move her hips. Been 7 weeks too long.. Hope Gleb doesn’t make the mistake of going too far down the Disco route and completely forgetting to do a Samba. Should still be a fun number though.
I took that to mean that they were listing them in chronological order by decade, chayse. Mainly because I can’t believe they would have Laurie dance in what is historically one of the less good spots in the running order.
That’s quite irrational, Stella, since Riker and Allison have absolutely no control over how things get credited on this show.
And musicians clearing rights to their songs are entitled to (and get) whatever recognition they are afforded – doing otherwise would cost DWTS a shit ton of money and credibility.
I think I can speak for everyone on this message board, when I say thank God Len is back!
1920s Charleston? There is no way Derek and screw this one up (Not that he does that ever); The Charlston is the 1920s dance.
I’m really, really looking forward to finally seeing Laurie do another ballroom dance. My only concern is that it is so different from the tango. No doubt in my mind that you can pull it off, though.
I don’t know much about jitterbugs but I’m really looking forward the James with “In the Mood”. Laurie also has the energy for a quickstep, just hopefully val will give her something good. And Derek and charleston? YES.
Yeah, Good Golly Miss Molly screams Kyle’s Jive to me too, that was a really memorable one. And Maureen’s song “You give love a bad name” was used for S9s Team Tango (Joanna, Kelly O. & Donny O.) and worked really well, back then when Team dances weren’t Freestyles.
I would have prefered Marilu getting the Quickstep and Laurie the Charleston. But hopefully Marilu will surprise like Melissa Joan Heart did with her Charleston.
Interesting they give James Jitterbug, now he gets a social dance with lifts and Calvin gets the technical Jive with no lifts.
Hehe sorry Chris! It’s just the producers and their manipulation that gets to me, not your comment. I also meant to put a ? at the end of my comment. Also, it got me thinking that if they didn’t score the team dances I wouldn’t mind it…it could actually be fair that way.
After listening to all the songs (my internet sucks at times and gives out) I gotta say Marilu’s song is pleasantly unique. I wonder If maybe Derek requested the song or TPTB chose it. Reminds me of Amber and Derek’s charleston which I loved (the song more so).
@Heidi- that makes perfect sense. I liked when they went in order last time, so I’ll be interested to see how it goes this time.
At least Lindsay won’t have to choreograph another Western-themed Jive like she did with Von and Wanya. I hope Calvin can nail it.
I’m so excited to see a Quickstep from Laurie.
I’m crossing my fingers Jana can pull off a Samba. I want her to be a true contender.
I think a 20s Charleston will be really fun for Marilu, I hope she can let go and have fun with it.
This week actually looks like it has the potential to be fun, but that of course remains to be seen. Some of the songs are “eh” but I am trying to be hopeful. I am super excited about James and Sharna’s jitterbug and Calvin and Lindsay’s Jive.
Thanks Courtney for the response!
Who are the judges for this Monday’s episode?
Bruno,Carrie ann ,Julianne and Len is back
Hopefully Len cracks down on the scoring and calls out fluff when he sees it. I would love to see an opening number with Len in it dancing as a young pro into Len today…through the decades.
Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” is my least-favorite song ever, maybe only exceeded in how much it bothers me by Bryan Adams’ “Everything I Do”. Here’s hoping that the band tweaks it to make it tolerable.
“I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing” reminds me of going to the dentist. It seems to always be playing there. It’s unpleasant.
Are you worried by the fact that Marilu and Derek haven’t starting rehearsal yet
Decades week is by far the weakest the theme in all the seasons. But interested to see what costumes they do. Last time they did this was the season Willow, and Riker were on!!!
If Derek isn’t worried about it, why should we? He says in his blog that everything will be fine. He’s even talked about the team dance and came up with a pretty damn cool concept.
I am also really over Ryan. He cannot dance. Cheryl hopes for some reason that she can just keep distracting us from his sucky dancing by taking his shirt off. Yawn!!!
Aerosmith’s “I don’t wanna miss a thing” was already used as Evan/Anna’s Rumba in S10.
I actually like the decades theme and the dance styles listed though not all the songs and not a fan of electronic music I’m sure they’ll find a way to make it work but ugghh.
Geri, songs have been re-used on the show all the time. If the last time “I don’t wanna miss a thing” was used in S10, that’s pretty good for the show.
@Lisa
I know, I was just saying that it was used for a Rumba before so people could get a feel for how it worked then on youtube if they want to, since some were complaining about the song.
Sadly I don’t think Calvin/Lindsay or Ryan/Cheryl will do a better job than the couples who already danced to their assigned songs since I feel that Kyle/Lacey’s Jive and Evan/Anna’s Rumba were quite memorable.
This is random but after reading the lyrics of “One Fine Day” I find it ironic that Val will be choreographing a routine to it.. (Val and Jenna breaking up because Val didn’t take it seriously – at least that’s what the valenna blog said lol and honestly, it was painfully obvious)
btw looking forward to James’s dance this week!
Derek is the only pro this season who will have been part of all 4 Era Nights (S9,S10, S20, S23) and he was the first pro ever to get assigned a future themed dance when he and Joanna got “future” as a decade for their Paso and so many seasons later he’s on the first ever Team Future.
And Marilu and Derek have to dance the two exact opposites of the night’s spectrum – a 1920s dance and a futuristic dance.
I just hope that the cliche of dancing like a robot isn’t what Derek has in mind for Team Future.
@casanova, have you read Derek’s blog?? He explains his concept in there.
Yeah, cuz Derek is always so cliché
:::snort::::
I like the era idea and I like all the music. Derek and Marilu’s music is the only one I’m not familiar with and had to Google. Funny that they didn’t want him to choose his most memorable song choice because it was unknown, and then they give him an unknown song. Maybe songs from the 20’s are just not familiar to anyone in general. Looking forward to seeing the Charleston and jitterbug the most I think.
I guess my point with Derek and Marilu’s music is that I’m not sure most people are going to be familiar with the 20’s version of that song and it doesn’t seem to match the dance style at all. I feel like they try to fit a square peg in a round hole with the couples they try to trip up, and I find it very frustrating. I felt like they tried to do that with Calvin and Lindsey last week and they threw it back in their face by nailing it. Of course they had to adjust the scoring so they still come out on top with controlling the outcome. It gets frustrating. I just hope that Derek and Marilu can turn that song into a Charleston somehow.
I get what you are saying and your frustration, Sheri, but the version of “Never Forget You” they are using if similar to the youtube vid, is actually a great Charleston song in my opinion. It has a quircky, fast beat, and a slow bit as well to allow Marilu to breathe, if they do put that part in the song.
TPTB def. use song choice as a source of manipulation, but I’m not so sure in this case. I’m kind of addicted to the song and can’t stop choreographing a charleston in my head. Sometimes the most unconventional songs end up being unforgettable performances.
I agree Lindsey killed that performance and song and Calvin as well. Loved it!
I wish they used “Rebel Yell” as a jive. Can’t wait for Eras Night AND then Halloween night…oh the possibilities for songs (if TPTB don’t recycle songs fingers crossed they don’t)
I’m wondering if they’ll go with a black and white look for the 20s Charleston like in Melissa Joan Hart’s Charleston and Kellie’s second Quickstep.
@EmnEm….I hope you’re right about the song. I agree that if you get it right with an unconventional song it makes it that much more memorable, and makes the pro look like a rock star 🙂
So excited for the team dances – they will be such contrasts. Team past has the splendour of an imperial ball (judging by those amazing costumes of Maureen and the guys) while team future looks like a dystopian nightmare. I hope it ends up being a tie.
Cheryl and Ryan dance second per Cheryl ‘s Twitter.
Laurie going first and James going last. I’m predicting they have chosen James as the winner to beat. That song with a jitterbug screams show stopper as someone mentioned before and now they’re closing out the show in the running order? Uh oh. I see a new favorite in the house.
in past seasons, the person who went last, their team goes second. im not sure if they are doing that tonight or they are chonological order(past first, future second)
I miss the time when the team dances were ballroom dances: Team Tango vs Team Cha Cha, for example. I think it was more competitive that way, and the judges could judge technique. With freestyles it’s all more subjective. I do appreciate the creativity the pros are able to display with the freestyles though, mainly Derek, Allison & Sharna.
