Derek Hough Tapped To Judge “World Of Dance”, Hairspray Live Coming Up Soon
A lot is going on in the world of Derek Hough. Not only is he getting ready to dance in “Hairspray Live” on December 7th, he has been tapped to judge Jennifer Lopez’s new dance series “World Of Dance”. Here is more from Variety….
The judges’ table is filling out on broadcast’s next reality competition show, “World of Dance” on NBC.
Derek Hough and Ne-Yo have been tapped as judges on the dance series, joining previously announced judge Jennifer Lopez, Variety has learned.
“World of Dance,” which was picked up this summer with a 10-episode order is described as an unparalleled dance competition that will feature solo artists competing against duos and crews in all genres of dance, including hip hop, krumping, popping, locking, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, clogging, stomping and more. The winner will receive a grand prize of $1 million.
Like we were talking on at twitter and Pure Derek Hough…this might be it for Derek and Dancing With The Stars and I can’t say I blame him. Can you? More at Variety. For more on Derek including a bunch of new “Hairspray Live” interviews and more, see Pure Derek Hough.
Wohooooo so happy for him. Well Dwts kind of deserves this for the shitty way they treated him not once but so many times. They had it coming. They can keep playing with their Cbros myHoughs are on to bigger better things.
I’m psyched for this show already! Now that is a judging panel (sytycd only has two good judges in my opinion so they should take notice of how to create an exciting panel). I’m thinking the last season really was his last now.
I’m excited for this. Being the jlo fan that I am, glad Derek is joining her to judge. Can’t wait to seem them work together.
Are there videos of this somewhere Vogue. Sounds good.
wow, Derek! this is awesome! NBC really made a super smart choice since Derek is one of the most famous dancers on TV! can’t wait to see this new show & good to see they want to keep him after Hairspray Live!
I hope they’ll have him perform at least once, maybe a cool judges dance with JLo! would be such a waste of talent if they just have him sit behind a desk all season long 😉
ABC should have known better that other networks will snap him up if they don’t offer him something good…it really is their own fault IF Derek is gone now.
But then again I think Derek is in a position where he doesn’t have to commit to one network only since he literally did Hairspray & DWTS at the same time & and if the tapings of his new NBC show and DWTS are not even at the same time, he could still do both…who knows what will happen, Derek is always good at surprising us when it comes to DWTS, he ended up on seasons where we thought there’s no way he could do it 😉
Since Julianne & Derek just got to host that Disney holiday special, I do wonder if ABC is trying to keep the Houghs…
Wish him the best, it’ll be a big ask to draw viewers for a show like this. Hope it doesn’t get cancelled after a season like Cheryl’s show.
Should be the nail in the coffin for Rob Wade and DWTS. Fans will continue to mutiny and reject the manipulation.
I am happy for Derek and think he will be a fair judge as well as a mentor to young dancers. Hope he gets to showcase his choreography and dancing talents as well. The concept of a million dollar payout to the competition winner might help draw viewers, as will the concept of watching a “non-celebrity” compete. It will be a pleasure to watch varied dance styles, and most importantly, to be able to applaud hard work and training…I’m talking to you, C brothers!
Congratulations, Derek. I hope you make this new show a success. Mark BAllas, head for the hills and as far away from DWTS as you can get.
Hey, Rob Wade, how are those C brothers gonna carry you now????? LOL, Karma
Fantastic news for Derek Hough!! He will make an amazing judge-perfect venue for him!! I cannot wait to see this kind of show-what a change of pace from DWTS….I just wish we knew when it was starting….
Exciting news! I don’t agree with the way Derek was treated this season on DWTS, but I doubt TPTB just heard the news like we did. They probably already knew NBC ordered 10 episodes of the show or heard it through the grapevine that NBC is tapping into Derek Hough for a dance-like show. So maybe this was a form of retaliation/passive aggression from their side. Not trying to justify it, but this news made me go ohhhhh maybe thats why TPTB were so messed up to Derek.
I also hope this show doesn’t get canceled like Cheryl’s show. I wonder if NBC swapped Cheryl back for Derek? Who knows? But, I can’t see this show being any bigger than America’s Best Dance Crew.
Jennifer Lopez’s show World of Dance sounds like a huge hit already!
With all the douchery done to Derek and everyone else including the viewers by DWTS, I’m thrilled to be petty and vengeful in my excitement that this new dancing show is on NBC.
Now I can tell DWTS to suck it since I can watch a mistreated pro judge a dancing show on another network, sitting next to Jennifer Lopez. Oh and I read in Variety that this season’s DWTS finale was down 25% from last season’s. Serves them right. They can’t make it up to me either. Too late & good riddance.
This great news for both dance fans and Derek fans. I think he’ll be a fantastic judge.
This reminds me a bit of dance competition show that was on several years ago that had dancers from different countries competing against each other. I can’t remember the name of it, but the host was that Lord Of The Dance guy.
Bravo Derek!! He’s really doing great things. Excited for HairsprayLive & really excited for the new show with JLo & Ne-Yo..
I’m so happy he’s moving on from DWTS and his talents being showcased on higher platforms. He’s the real deal. Hope he only returns as a special guest star.
Way to go Derek!! Very proud of him!! 🙂
Wow!! So thrilled to hear this fantastic news!! So many wonderful doors are opening for Derek outside of DWTS…New York Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, upcoming Singin’ in the Rain on Broadway, Hairspray Live next week, Disney Magical Holiday Celebrations, and now the World of Dance with JLo and Ne-Yo, plus his epic MOVE tours and passion projects…and it’s so awesome to watch Derek spread his wings, venture into new territory, and share his extraordinary talents in so many different areas. The sky’s the limit, and the possibilities are endless! And it fills my heart with so much joy to see Derek recognized for his many beautiful gifts and to see him pursue avenues where he’ll be appreciated and respected. He certainly does live according to his motto, “Live with Passion,” and it’s such a delight to follow his remarkable journey and to watch him shine brightly in everything he does, while always remaining humble and grateful.
Huge congrats, Derek, on this amazing news!! Wishing you a world of success in this new and exciting endeavor and always, and may you continue to be richly blessed. Love and best wishes always!
#9 I so agree with you. I had the uncanny feeling that Derek was being “punished” for something by TPTB, although I thought it had something to do with Hairspray versus their own Dirty Dancing. I remember, though, a press release where it was stated that “NBC was Derek’s home network” and I thought that was a little telling.
Derek posts about his new show, the Backstage article & Ellen. Val posts a picture of himself naked with only a pillow over his crotch saying that being naked helps him think…
I think Derek will be an impactful and entertaining judge. If the show runs for more than 2 seasons I think they might keep the judges seats a revolving door position with a new choreographer each season and a diff celeb/performer like Neyo, while keeping JLO there in the middle.
I think DWTS is the only successful show running now that has been able to maintain their original judges without too much hanky panky to the panel. The new trend I’ve noticed among different dance/song shows across the world is a revolving seat method to keep things fresh and new.
It’s a smart move to get Derek though. He’s got the credentials and he will draw viewers due to his DWTS roots. Lots more people will give the show a watch for Derek rather than NeYo. Who knows, if he does well comes off as a great judge, then I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if DWTS comes back to him with a judging offer of their own in the next year or so…
Couldn’t agree more with you all on Derek. Thanks for your thoughts, Everyone.
Geri, that is just sad and disgusting about Val.
I think the “revolving seat panel” has more to do with the judges popularity than any design by the shows. When you get judges that are still at the top of their game, touring, doing whatever, they’re not going to want to commit to multiple seasons in a row. Even Julianne took a break and who knows if she’ll actually be back.
I am so excited for this show. Sounds like a great melding of the BEST parts of SYTYCD (classic version and Next Gen) as well as DWTS WITH the bonus of it being NON PROFESSIONALS so hopefully less manipulation.
If it runs against DWTS this could prove very interesting in terms of the dynamics (and drama?) on both shows. Rob Wade and “The Fam'” are going to have to step it up if they want to keep people watching.
P.S. Val desperately needs to GROW UP!!
And who knows how long Mark will want to do DWTS without Derek. Maybe this means Mark is done as well.
It’s too bad that DWTS couldn’t be bought by NBC. If it had been a NBC show, I think Derek would’ve been treated better.
@ 14 I wonder when NBC became Derek’s home network? When he signed onto Hairspray?
@Rachel
I think NBC is Derek’s home network because he signed Hairspray before he decided to do DWTS S23, so when he signed on to do DWTS this season he was bound to 2 networks but the one who signed him first is his home network (meaning he’s mainly commited to NBC & Hairspray that’s why he didn’t appear in any DWTS pro numbers after getting eliminated from the competition. His contractual commitment to DWTS ended with Marilu’s elimination.)
How was he even still affiliated with ABC? Maybe because of that one season left in his contract?
Oh, nevermind about the last question Geri. Thanx
I think Derek has been season to season for a bit. I think that season 23 was a one-off season.
I do agree with Geri that it seems pretty obvious that Derek was not contracted to do the vast majority of pro dances. Was he in any apart from the one he created after week 5 or so??
It won’t ever run against DWTS while the voice is on. It’ll more than likely be a summer show. It might well go up against SYTYCD.
They start filming in January, actually. I think it will be a replacement show and start airing Feb/March…and there are more days in the week than Monday.
