DWTS Premiere Date Set, Who’s Coming Back…and More Nick Viall Rumors
Whole lot to talk about in this interview with one of the executive producers of DWTS and Jessica Radloff of Glamour. First, she drops a date of March 20th – something I don’t think we officially knew before now. Then there’s this:
Season 24, especially, is going to be a big one. The show is celebrating its 400th episode, and producers are promising lots of nostalgia. “We will do something for it,” executive producer Joe Sungkur tells us. That’s not the only thing to look forward to: Sungkur also revealed that one fan favorite will definitely be back (though another will definitely not be returning). “As an overall for the season, we will bring back favorite themes, [inject] some new ideas, but also stick to what’s working so well. And we hope for romance in the air! Whenever there is romance, there’s a smile on our face.”
So dude just ADMITTED that they hope and pray (and plot and manipulate) to get some romance on the show. GAG me! This is a dance show! No more fauxmance!! Especially not if Val is one of the parties involved. He’s done enough damage with that routine. This pisses me off and we haven’t even gotten started yet. Anyway…
Speaking of romance, this season’s Bachelor—Nick Viall—may get the opportunity to show off his dance moves beyond his next one-on-one date. During my interview with the producers at ABC’s Television Critics Association winter press tour, the Wisconsin native dropped in our conversation and seemed to be very friendly with DWTS EPs Rob Wade, Deena Katz, and Sungkur. How friendly? Well, talks could already be happening (but more on that below).
Of course Nick was there, but I suspect this is just him sucking up and still trying to get a spot. He was there for the Bachelor and saw an opportunity. But you never know! All depends on how strong the rest of their cast is.
Looks like they’re hoping Julianne will be back and they’re working on her – but the very definitive “Derek will not be back.” is pretty hilarious. He blames it on MOVE, never mentions the competing dance show (of course) and is definitive TWICE. I suspect the urge to add the word “never” was hard for him to resist. 🙂 Mark might be back so there is hope for Ballas Fans.
Oh lord:
Last season, it was lovely to see Sasha [do what he did] with his creativity and the way he worked with Terra. I think Gleb did a phenomenal job with his creativity, and the dance of last season was the shower dance. Creatively, we had never done that before. As the season progressed, it was important that we had dancers push boundaries like that.
Um, hardly the dance of the season and yes, it has been done before. Both Derek and Val have used water (more than once!!) in their dances. Jaysus.
Courtney: Let me fix that for you, bruh – you misspelled “desperation” as “c-r-e-a-t-i-v-i-t-y”. I still maintain that the “shower dance” was the most overrated dance of the entire season – and if they really truly believe it was super-creative (and they might not, they could just be doing some serious bullshitting), then this show really is a dumpster fire. Oh, yay, “romance” – that sure doesn’t sound planned AT ALL, and I’m sure it will all unfold COMPLETELY ORGANICALLY WITHOUT ANY MANIPULATION WHATSOEVER!!! 😀 So a “fan favorite” will be back, eh? I’m hoping that’s Mark, just so the choreographic future of this show doesn’t rest solely on Lindsay & Sharna’s shoulders, although part of me wonders if they might actually be referring to Peta – which makes me groan a bit, because this woman birthed a baby just 8 days ago. As for Derek – hehehe. I caught a clip of him on ET a few weeks back where the interviewer asked him if he’d be back on DWTS next season, and he gave a bit of a wry laugh before saying “Ummm, no” and just leaving it at that. Definitely not the diplomatic tack he has taken in the past, and probably a good indicator that he’s washed his hands of DWTS once and for all…which we kinda already gathered from the way he’s quite publicly indicated he’s now on the NBC payroll. As for Nick – I don’t watch The Bachelor/Bachelorette/etc., so I don’t really know what this dude’s gig is…although I vaguely remember talk of him being a “villain” (or “Viall-in”…?) and some magazine asserting that he was well-endowed down yonder (which he probably paid them to say). Hasn’t he done like, three or four iterations of the Bachelor series by now? Is he trying to become a professional reality show contestant? Guess DWTS would be the next logical step there. Anywho, the other thing that sticks out is the word “nostalgia”, which concerns me a bit…haven’t we done a ton of reminiscing about previous seasons at this point? How many retooled versions of “Hey! Pachuco” do we really need? Or bumper dances by Alfonso, Kelly, & Meryl? Give Flo Henderson a nice tribute, and then be done with it. And where’s my damn Prince tribute?!!!
Vogue: Finally, a premiere date! It’s been so quiet, I was beginning to think there wouldn’t be a Spring season. 😯 Anyway, I’m excited that they have half of the cast picked already. After what Miss Heidi and Vin posted in the first rumor post on him, I’m all on for Nick Vaill and he’s cute. 🙂 I’m excited for any returning Pros from last season….especially Gleb (sorry Rob, my fave dance of the season was not the shower dance! Are you serious? How can you say that with the level of creativity we saw in all the freestyle performances? Gleb’s other dances were more worthy. 😐 ). I really enjoyed Cheryl last season as well. I’m hoping Peta will dance, but, I bet she’ll want to stay home with baby Shai for a while longer before returning. I wouldn’t be surprised if she skipped the Fall season too. But, I agree on Sasha. He was phenomenal last season. I really hope Mark comes back. Without Derek coming back (lol to Rob not mentioning the real reason.), it will be nice to have his creativity added and I missed him. As for Theme Weeks, I’m not a fan for the most part…but, I LOVED “Cirque De Soul” week and hope they do it again. Here’s to the new season…..and to creative, well thought out choreography and, please, no MANIPULATING!! With “World Of Dance” premiering (and possibly at the same time at some point this Spring), Dancing With The Stars will really have to step up their game. Isn’t that right~ And Court…. amen to a Prince tribute!
I’m fairly certain they weren’t referring to Peta as the “old favorite” because they talked about her in another section of the article. I’m pretty sure it was Len because they know he’s set to come back for sure already. 😛 But would love to see Mark back if he decides to return. 🙂
“Nostalgia” was a term used by the writer and not in the interview itself so I’m not taking that too seriously but I do hope there’s not too much focus on reminiscing. It’s a new season, so I want to see new stuff! 😛
And yes, Nick Viall has a reputation in The Bachelor franchise for being a player. 😛
I’d put money right now on the “fan favourite” coming back being Tony. I find it quiet hilarious that they refer to him as a “fan favourite” when in reality he’s probably one of the least popular pros. I know a lot of old people like him but I think most people would be happy if he just retired because he’s way past his sell by date.
Other notable points to take from that interview:
They really like Gleb and are trying to make him happen. Expect him to get another contender next season and Tony and Artem (if he’s back) get given the lesser female celebs who will be eliminated early.
Mark will probably be back, he’ll be free and DWTS is still a great platform for him. Obviously they can’t confirm it but based on that interview, I think they’re fairly confident he’ll come back. This is good news as unlike Tony he’s been missed.
Nick Viall is obviously desperate to be on the show, but personally if they are going to cast someone from that franchise I wish they’d get a female as they tend to be a lot more likeable. Jo-Jo Fletcher would have been great if they’d got her last season.
All pros might be “coming back” but the question is in what capacity. Only 12 spots this season so some people have to sit out. Does this also mean that Cheryl has agreed to come back. This would be great.
The interviewer just tweeted that the fan favorite that’s back is Len. So I’m confused.
With the spots filled by Derek and maks (he said he wasn’t coming back right?) last season on the pro roster empty, I’d guess tony is a sure bet (oddly enough I was a bit annoyed when he wasn’t there last season at first but after week 2, I was over it so I’d bet money he will Be back but not thrilling on it and hopefully Mark is back. I’m thinking the fan favorite is Mark. I hope Cheryl is back too 🙂 ….cuz she just is so much fun to watch. Ah, nick lol. It’s weird cuz people either love him (I think he is a lot of fun to watch) or hate him (and I get why but he seems more authentic this season). I’d hope Peta would sit the season out and just enjoy mommy time. And as for gleb, when he delivers it’s a lot of fun to watch but sometimes with Jana it was very forced sexy if that makes sense. Oh wow water….how hot….yawn. Saying that, I am so happy they mentioned Sasha because he knocked it out of the park last season and honestly they need to see what they have with him because he has the goods to take a celeb all the way to that finale. Same for Emma but they only have given her two really good partners (Hayes…who was great….and bill….who was the ultimate showman and could make any dance fun to watch).
Also, part of me can’t help but wonder if the fan favorite could be Louis.
Well at this point, I’m sticking to my guns! Without Derek and if Mark opts out, I seriously doubt I’ll be tuning in this season; they would have to have a huge “get” of a celeb to lure me back! I’ll follow Court’s tweets and this blog and if anything sounds worth it, I’ll pull it up on YouTube.
And let me just say, already pushing a “romance”, gag me! That’s no incitement to lure me back! The shower dance was the dance of the season? What a load of crap! Maybe the most over-hyped dance of the season! I like Gleb, but I felt like all season with Jane was pushing a sexy angle as opposed to quality dancing!
I’m hedging on Peta returning & think it’s possible if she can get an “Emma” partner (out in few weeks.) It wouldn’t surprise me because Maks keeps saying he wants to be a stay at home dad. And good for her she really stayed in shape BUT she did just give birth 8 days ago so I wish her that precious time with Shai though I am a fan of hers and without Derek, if both Peta and possibly Mark are gone I’m pretty much done. I’d like to see Cheryl and Karina back with good partners. Witney & Jenna (sorry) send back w Keo to troupe. Hope Sasha and Emma are back. Would for once like Emma to get a real contender. When all is said and done, depending on the pros and cast, I’m with Courtney that this show is in the dumpster. If Derek is in NBC show where he is APPRECIATED opposite it, I possibly may DVR DWTS depending on pros and cast. I saw Mark in Jersey Boys on 12/27 and he was amazing and personally should be looking at more Broadway shows because he has real stage presence and audience connection. As for a Val romance or any other showmance that will be the final nail for me. Last season we had none and it was refreshing. Just please go back to the real ballroom/Latin dances, Macy’s Stars of Dance and stop the gimmicks. There, I’ve said my piece. I’ve been really quiet on here for last season because honestly the show had lost what I enjoyed. I respect others opinions and we all like/dislike certain pros. That’s fine with me but overall regardless IMO the show has or is close to jumping the shark. Sharna not rightfully winning with James in favor of Laurie (nothing against her-she’s a sweetie) winning because she was doing tour was really almost last straw for me. I’m willing to be open minded this season but I need to see final cast and pros. And memo to Rob Wade: stop trying to make Val happen. It hasn’t and it won’t. JMO. Thank you to all the mods and everyone at Pure for all you do and giving us a forum to speak like this. It is truly appreciated.
Yeah, when I first read the article, I assumed she was talking about Len as the fan favorite…although I don’t necessarily agree. I thought he was horrible last season.
And NO WAY would Louis be the fan favorite – he’s been dying to get back on the show and if he was truly a favorite, he would have been back before now.
I would not assume there are only 12 spots. There’s no rule and they are free to change shit around as they like.
Ugh that Nick Vail guy? I don’t watch the Bachelor shows but from what I keep hearing about him, he’s creepy. And showmance crap? Double ugh!! Who are the producers gonna try to fake love with this time around? Waste of dance time!
I do think Mark is most definitely coming back-he’s been missed by fans/quite possibly he’s missed being on the show a bit himself-had a great run on Broadway. Wondering about Cheryl-if she was just a one time return last season or if she came back to stay-I’m a bit hesitant about her.
We’ll definitely still see Gleb-he seemed to do well for himself being back. Seriously hope they keep Emma but the producers love playing games with her so I don’t know. Sasha had a good run too-really hope they keep him on.
No doubt we’ll still see Val, Sharna, Lindsey, Allison, Whitney although for some reason I’m feeling a question mark with her. Jenna is still a hit or miss for me-I’m thinking they’ll give her another shot but hmmm.
I’m assuming that Peta will sit out this season and return in the fall but who knows. She has said in interviews that she would see how she was feeling and stuff.
I think the fan favorite is no doubt Tony-he’s probably itching to get back on the dance floor since he’s missed out and probably wants the $ lol too. Let’s be honest.
I would love to see a tribute to Florence Henderson-that would be Sooo sweet!! Didn’t they do nostalgic stuff when they celebrated the show’s anniversary? That’s when they brought back past celebs. So what are they gonna do now? SMH
More “fauxmance??!!” *GAG* I just threw up a little!
Peta needs her rest for now. I hope she will return for the next season. I pray Mark Ballas, Tony, Karina, Sasha and Cheryl will return.
Yesss!!! A Prince tribute is something I’d like to see! I miss him so much!
I am excited for Season 24 but goodness gracious, please NO “ROMANCES”. Gag me!
Reading the Glamour article and it struck me how the exec producer talks how Maks is always welcome on the show “even in the judges chair”. Oh boy….
Mark killed it on Jersey Boys! I know I’ve been saying this a lot, but I really really really hope he comes back this coming season and gets paired with Idina Menzel or Eva Mendes. Right now those are my two number one choices for Mark’s partner (if he returns this season). As for Nick competing; I have to honestly say that eventhough I do like Nick, I don’t know if I can handle another bachelor competing this season. I would also love to see Kara DiaGuardi with Shannon and Hailee Steinfeld with Artem.
No doubt they will give Emma no chance to compete or not have her back. This girl has not been treated like the other girl pros. Give her a chance at least once before you cut her loose
For Court and all others who aren’t up to date with Nick and “Bachelor” land, here’s a bit of a synopsis.
This is the fourth time Nick Viall’s been on some iteration of the Bachelor franchise. He did back-to-back seasons of The Bachelorette (Seasons 11 and 12) and was rejected in each at the final 2.
In season 11, Andi Dorfman broke up with him after the Fantasy Suite before he even attempted a proposal. In Season 12, Kaitlyn Bristowe let him get as far as the proposal before cutting him off right before he started to propose. In both seasons, he was a bit of a villain by unabashedly being himself, generally not caring what the rest of his fellow contestants thought, e.g. interrupting and other things. Plus, he’s sort of known for his many “conquests” on the show, including one before the Fantasy Suite.
This past summer, he went on Bachelor in Paradise, quite possibly to rehab his image and make people like him, and it worked. He’s landed the gig as the Bachelor.
However, I never thought a Bachelor would ever do DWTS again after Sean and Chris simply because of the tight turnaround from After the Final Rose to the start of DWTS, but in Nick’s case, I don’t think he’s gone on Bachelor shows “to find love.” I think he’s on there for the TV exposure and to build the Nick Viall brand, so I could easily see him doing it, especially since I’m not sure they’ll be able to get a Bachelor to do it again.
So there’s my Bachelor synopsis.
Mark will probably be the fan favorite coming back or Tony and I think that Nick has a possibility to be on it, possibly with Sharna. Lindsay, Sharna, Emma and Artem needs to get celebs that have dance experience before or young competitors. Gleb, Cheryl, Jenna, Val,Tony, and Mark I hope are back. Haley and Alan should move up the pros on Season 24. Oksana Platero should be pro if she is not busy with Strictly.
Jonathan Platero should be pro as well.
If they’re having fan favorites, I would love to see Karina and Cheryl on the ladies side. I would tune in while they’re on. That would leave 4 spots left. I would think Sharna, Lindsay, Witney, Emma. No to Jenna.
Mark coming back would be a must. Creatively, Mark and Karina would be the fan favorites to have for me (since Derek is gone). I guess I can see them have Tony for the 400th episode. Gleb and Sasha definitely. Would like to see the German troupe guy be a pro. Something fresh. Oh ugh, and Val of course will be back.
Does the timing mean anything for chances of getting Hayley back on the Move tour?
(Or are we already figuring it’s bad business practice for Hayley to be on the tour? I just love them together! :))
No showmances! I was hoping with Val and Amber officially making it known they are a couple that there would be no one left for a showmance. No one believed Val’s fake showmance with Janel (except Janel) and he was single. Why would anyone believe it when he has a significant other? Ugh!
Unless Mark is back, I’m more than likely tuning out this season. It’s kind of run its course for me anyway.
I hope Peta sits out this season to be with Shai and I hope Maks is done for good. Surely he has a dance studio that needs his attention.
Even Mark returning would not be enough to bring me back to this show. It seems so old and tired at this point and I will not stand for more of Rob Wade and the “make Val” happen agenda. I will follow Derek to the new show, and have tickets for Move Beyond as well. Really hoping Mark does not return to be trashed and disrespected as Derek was. Mark is exceptionally talented and I don’t he needs this show any longer.
My time is better spent on QUALITY programming.
I have a feeling that Cheryl is the ‘Fan Favorite’ that’s coming back since it’s pretty clear that Derek and Maks both are not. As for the romance thing, it’s going to be much harder for them to spin showmances in the future since pretty much all the pros and troupe members are taken. I believe Val has said in an interview that he will ‘never again’ go the showmance route, and considering how public he is about his relationship with Amber, I doubt he will do the showmance thing, especially in season 24.
I’m guessing that they’ll go down to twelve members of the cast and move Jenna back to troupe. I think Jenna has it in her to be a great pro, but maybe after some more time. Being demoted to troupe might set a fire in her the way it did for Lindsay, Sasha, and many others. I think Mark could be returning, but I don’t think Tony will. At least not yet. My predictions for the male lineup would be Val, Gleb, Artem, Sasha, Alan, Mark or Keo. My prediction for the female lineup would be Cheryl, Lindsay, Sharna, Emma, Witney, and Allison. I don’t think Peta will be coming back. Maybe in s25 or s26, but not now. She just had a baby, and she and Maks live on the East Coast. Let her enjoy some time as a mother before coming back.
Another report just came in that Mark just recently followed Ashley Benson on Twitter and that there is a very good chance that he could be paired with her if he comes back this season. Although I’m still sticking with my two top choices for his partner. I guess Ashley would be a great partner too…
No No No to Nick! The male Bachelor contestants are always cringe worthy and last too long, but he seems like a special kind of awful. I had no idea he’d done 4 versions of the show, I’ve never seen it, but from the interviews I’ve seen of him it makes sense- he’s just gross to me.
The idea that the “shower dance” was the dance of the season makes me want to run. I’m on the fence about watching anyways, but if Gleb’s choreo (which I thought was mostly horrible) is the choreo they are going for I’m less likely to tune in. Hopefully, if he was using a ghost in the past, Gleb rehires whoever was doing his choreo for the Russia/UK versions.
I’m hopeful that Rob is being honest about the current pros staying. I agree Sharna and Lindsay rocked it this season, but I also think Sasha and Cheryl did really well- as did Emma and Artem with the partners they were given.
I agree with what they said about Keo, and others- that its hard to come in new bc the level of choreo from some established pros is so high. But I also think the show no longer rewards pros for being creative and interesting, so there really isn’t the push for most them to learn new things and try harder.
“the dance of last season was the shower dance”
As my dear Dad used to say “You’ve Gotta be Shitting Me!!”
Honestly given some of what we’ve seen of Mandy Moore in other venues this year I think are the producers responsible for the bump and grind shows because you don’t see that outside DWTS.
James, Tara, Mari Lou, and Laurie’s dances were MILES better than that shower dance.
The shower dance was just their latest “Sex on a Stick” routine.
For my money if you want hot and steamy stuff you need look no further
than Paige and Mark’s “Get A Room” Argentine Tango.
Nick last night on the bachelor had the Backstreet Boys guest and there was a dance challenge. Also, the girl
With the nanny is insane and another calls mac and cheese “cheese pasta”. Don’t know who annoyed me more. Anyways, nick seemingly can dance from what they showed yesterday.
Mark is my all time favorite pro. I missed his creativity last season. Even Derek wasn’t as good without Mark being around. However since his experience on Broadway in Jersey Boys was such a success, why would he go back to DWTS? Hope he is offered another show. With all his talent, Broadway is where he belongs!
Just remind that dancing in the rain was first seen in Dancing With the Stars Peru… lol and it was a “style”. All couples should do that. And then in Argentina… whatever… Was not first seen on DwtS US AND Terra wasn’t the first small person on a dance competition TV Show. Two words: Noelia Pompa (ARG).
As for me, I just ask for real dance and no props.
“Another report just came in”?? Come on, CH. For one thing, it’s January – even if Ashley is dancing, they wouldn’t have told Mark that she was his partner yet. They never do that. And follows in January rarely (never??) turn out to be partners.
If Mark comes back, he won’t be treated like Derek was. They’ve pretty much ignored him for several seasons now and he doesn’t threaten anything they are trying to do like Derek does. On the contrary, he will be used to the max to pimp the show because of his Broadway experience. They mentioned it a lot when Derek was doing NYSS. But many of Derek’s other activities directly conflict with DWTS goals. Mark has never done that.
I don’t think you understand Broadway, LeannC – roles tailor made for you don’t just grow on trees. There are MANY great actors/singers who are Broadway regulars – I don’t think stepping into a long standing show in a role that couldn’t be any more perfectly fit to you is going to move him to the head of the line for any role in any theater.
It was a great accomplishment for him and will look great on his resume – and will likely make Broadway easier going forward – but let’s not get carried away on the facts. That show was a success for many, MANY years before Mark came along. And before you tell me that attendance went up when he joined – let’s not forget that that coincided with the announcement that the show was closing. I suspect that many/most Tony winning musicals get a bump when the closing is announced. I’m sure Mark’s fans contributed, but the closing helped.
All THAT being said, it seems to me that Derek and Mark have very similar mind-sets when it comes to work. You don’t have success in one area just to quit what got you there – especially when it’s still a good opportunity to keep your face in front of the public. The VAST majority of the public who Mark wants to buy his music did not see him on Broadway and, a year from now, will not remember that he was even on Broadway. You can’t quit something like DWTS unless you feel like you have enough stuff in the bag to keep your face out there to sell your music. Derek isn’t going the music route in a serious way like Mark is, plus he has several different TV things going on, so he’s a bit more likely to say bye to DWTS. I certainly wouldn’t blame Mark if he went back to DWTS – especially if they guarantee him a couple chances to play his music. That would just be smart, in lieu of another TV show.
Hello Heidi… I have not commented on here in months… So sorry if I’m already sounding nuts. Anyway, in my last comment I forgot to say that I like Nick and I always have since Andi’s season of the bachelorette, but I think that instead of having another complete Bachelor on the show, the should just have a former contestant from the bachelor or the bachelorette. One that has become very memorable. This is going to sound insane! Chad Johnson would be perfect.
Heidi, I fully understand your comments above. All of the pros on DWTS have this show to thank for their success. It has opened many doors for them which never would have happened if they did not perform on DWTS. Besides one must never burn the hand who has feed them all these years. I would love to see Cheryl, Derek, Mark and Karina return so that we can enjoy their creative performances every week. That being said, it would also be wonderful to see them fulfill their dreams too.
But Leann, Mark himself said that *Jersey Boys* in particular was a dream come true. Not just broadway but Jersey Boys. From everything I understand, Mark’s main dream is to be a successful musician. IF that is true, he has to make that his main focus. In order to help that along, he needs to make use of DWTS- Broadway will not help him nearly as much. The theaters are SMALL – I doubt that as many different people saw Mark over the course of his Jersey Boys run than they do in one week on DWTS.
Derek, cheryl and Karina all have different goals and dreams – and those goals and dreams may or may not require a continued presence on DWTS. It is much more helpful to Mark.
So they think the shower dance was the most creative dance last season and want future dances to push boundaries?
So what boundary pushing dances can we look forward too? Let me put on my prognosticator hat (it’s in the shape of a mirrorball) and see:
1.A sizzling Rumba between a priest and a nun. Thrill to the forbidden passion. Clutch your pearls as vestments and habits are shed in the name the dance.
2. A moving Contemporary about the horrors of constipation. The prop department really pushes boundaries by designing and building a clear glass 10ft. tall toilet, which Gleb, in the finale of the dance, climbs bravely up to mount. To the crashing cords of the music, he proceeds to take an actual dump on stage. The Triumph Of The Poo!
3. A thrilling Argentine Tango about road rage which takes place entirely in a parked Hyundai Sonata. The choreographic innovation will astound you! Unfortunately, while executing a gaucho, Gleb accidentally shifts the car from park to drive and runs the over the judges table. Very sad, but think of the free publicity and sky high ratings!
OMG Susan2! I’m laughing so hard right now I almost spit my wine on my computer!! LOL I’d be ok with Gleb running over the Judges Table so long as he takes out Carrie-Ann in the process! LOLZ!!
