Only One tango? Oddly happy becuase Simone has it 🙂 . Just a shot in the dark here but I’m guessing charro, mr t, or nick opening the show.
5 of the 6 male celebs have Cha Cha and there’s no Foxtrots. Interesting.
Wonder why. Did they think giving the male celebs Cha Cha would help them be more upbeat and memorable against the female celebs?
Yeah I’m trying to guess at the producers method for their madness here-a tango, quicksteps, waltzes, Cha chas, salsas….and zero fox trots all for week one? Hmmm my guess is they’re trying to already challenge the ladies from the get go while showcasing the individual talents each of them will bring to the dance floor. Giving Charo salsa right away? Makes it fun for her right off the bat; Erika’s dancing to her own song too-that’s a plus for her. I have a feeling Nancy will do a splendid waltz in this first week. Heather will as well-technique wise anyway.
As far the guys go-giving them all Cha chas starts them off on equal footing but some of the guys are dancing to a particular song choice which might make it easier for them like Chris and Mr. T-hmmm wonder if that was done on purpose to help them? LOL Something tells me Lindsay, Sharna, Emma and Peta’s partners will fair better at Cha Cha this first week than Chris and Mr. T. Just being honest.
Ha! Just noticed David Ross and Lindsay have quickstep-had to look again….so out all the Cha chas for the guys he’s the one quickstep-is that supposed to be competition against Val and Normani’s quickstep? Give me a break! Lindsay can outchoreograph Val, in my opinion anyway lol.
Sad to see no jive, even though its a hard one for week 1. Simone is my pick for highest score, and happy they have a mix of oldies but goodies, some songs I haven’t heard of and some popular songs. Lately all they do is the “in” songs and it gets annoying I enjoy the classics.
And I believe Charo to be better than we expect
I love Erika, Charo, David, Chris and Mr. T’s song choices!! I love when they dance to a song that’s unique/special to the star in the premiere episode!
What a weird group of dances- basically half the contestants doing cha cha. My thoughts:
1. I tend to think David got a little screwed here versus the other male contestants (I’m also biased) but I don’t see him being the first one out so not a big deal.
2. Both Chris and Nick’s songs are making me cringe. I’m not really looking forward to those.
3. Nancy, Rashad, Mr. T, and Erika seem to have lucked out most on song choice/style, IMO
4. I wish Simone would have gotten something more upbeat and happy for week 1.
I’ll be really curious to see who goes last.
My uncle is actually 1 of the 2 guys in Tritonal so I’m super excited to hear their song on the show! I also saw Simone Biles at a concert last week. The artist asked her to come on stage and dance with him and she has some moves! Are we really surprised though? Lol. Excited to see the dances!
Jeez, the dance assignments are all over the place.
I find Simone’s assignment to be very interesting. You’d think the styles that would come most naturally to gymnasts would be the fast-paced, athletic styles that are not in hold. This is even more true for gymnasts like Simone and Laurie who have bubbly personalities that fit well with the mood of those styles. If I remember right, Laurie had cha cha, jive, and jazz all within the first four weeks. I’ll be really interested to see what styles Simone is given for the next few weeks after being given tango in week one.
As far as the men and David being the only one who was given a quickstep, I listened to his song, and it’s not a very fast song. I wonder if this actually won’t be as difficult as it looks on the surface because the tempo of the song necessitates that the dance not be a really fast-paced quickstep in which he and Lindsay are flying all over the floor.
I’ve always thought quickstep is fairly easy to be honest, Alek Skarlatos had a good quickstep so David will have no issues. I notice pretty much everyone who doesn’t have a chance of winning playing their ace cards in terms of music and dance. No one wants to be the first to go.
Thoughts–
Can’t wait to see Simone and Sasha’s Tango I’m not crazy about the song but as long as the dancing and choreography are original rather than a rehash of the C’bro light show I’ll be happy.
Other songs that stood out for me were
“Move” for Bonner and Sharna’s Cha Cha
“Always a Woman to Me” for Nancy and Artem’s waltz (perfect 1st dance)
“Go Cubs Go” for David and Lindsay’s Quickstep
and Cuban Pete (Chick Chicky Boom) for Charo and Keo’s Salsa
While they are not using Desi Arnaz’s version if I were Keo I’d channel Lucy. Go watch the the clip yeah Lucy and Ricky were funny but they also could dance. Charo is similar in that she is also very funny but she is also very talented.
Lastly I’m conflicted about Heather and Maks Vienese Waltz to
“Make Something Beautiful”
The song is perfect for how I’ve been feeling the last couple of months but I’d much prefer to see it as a pro dance or bumper, (even if it were danced by Maks and PETA), than what feels like which is an emotional manipulation by TPTB to get us to see Heather and Maks as creating beautiful dances and NOT the fact she is a professional dancer.
Just my thoughts
Is it just me or are others wondering what’s behind Simone being the only contestant with Tango? Usually, that would make me think TPTB are already starting their manipulations in that team’s favor. No direct competition and surely Simone will stand out and in a good way. I’m a fan of both Simone and Sasha. But even so, I hate manipulations like this from the “bosses.”
But I really thought this season’s storyboard is about Maks. He’s been promoted, has a “natural” story as a new father and another in the fact that his little brother and finance are more “successful” on this show than his egoness. Obviously, the producers went out of their way to obtain an outstanding partner for him. I might be paranoid but, I’m expecting the 3 stooges to make remarks about the advantages “Olympic athletes” Simone and Nancy have and high expectations while conveniently not saying the same about Heather and Normani.
Cha Cha is the easiest dance, CM – they’re trying to level the playing field, IMO.
It’s NOT ENOUGH, but okay. If the judges don’t mention the iniquity every single week between the men and the women I’ll be ticked. And I’ll probably ask Julianne about it at MOVE.
In the past several seasons, the producers have given everyone songs that relate to their personal/professional life in some way. Like David dancing to that Cubs song. It could be that simple. When you have well experienced dancers dancing with the pros you’re trying to pimp, and judges who will score as you wish, and the ability to edit the shit out of the packages, do you need to mess with the songs and dances?
ETA: My first sentence is referring to week 1.
I’m pretty excited to see Charo dance salsa, I do think it’s a stretch with giving two couples a dance style that absolutely no one else is doing, but the show has done it before. I’m concerned that in Normani’s case that they could be putting her in a situation where she has all the more faster dances in her first few weeks, so that way she’ll have a smooth ride going into the final weeks. Then again they could also be doing the same thing with Simone, but I’m kinda more convinced that it’s along the lines of “Let’s give Normani and Simone a chance to be more noticeable amongst the other couples”.
I also have to echo VIN (#1) in saying that Charo, Nick, or Mr. T might open the show. I would imagine that the latter end of the night will be a Chmerkovskiy fest with Simone HOPEFULLY rounding out the evening. If not Simone I’ll be happy with David, Rashad, or Bonner wrapping up the show.
@Colleen I wouldn’t necessarily interpret Simone getting tango as the producers trying to work it to her advantage. Like I said in an earlier comment, I thought it was kind of an attempt to play to Laurie’s strengths last season when she got a bunch of dances that would come naturally to her right off the bat. The fact that they gave Simone a dance in hold that allows for no lifts and tricks actually seemed like a way to challenge Simone and Sasha to me. If they were to give her a dance that others had, they’d have to give her cha cha, salsa, quickstep, or viennese waltz. If they gave her cha cha, she would probably really stand out compared to some of the cha chas the men will be doing. If they gave her salsa, she’d probably stand out against Erika and Charo. If they gave her quickstep, that would be kind of mean to David to make him do a style where he, Normani, and Simone were the only ones doing it. That leaves Viennese waltz, and perhaps they just didn’t want to have nearly all of their female ringers doing the same style.
@Colleen Hmmm Maks was promoted? That’s news to me lol. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure we’ll hear a great deal about his baby with Peta but, in my opinion, the producers are gonna spin it more in Peta’s direction and play the “mommy” card as opposed to focusing on Maks. As far as his finances go, to my knowledge they have nothing to do with DWTS. Heather as his partner? Well, that’s a whole other story….
I am really excited about this season. I am looking forward to seeing what the pros come up with. Which pros do you think are the best and worst choreographers?
I’ was originally inclined to say that David seem’s to have landed with the least favorable dance for a 1st week dance. However, we know Lindsay can choreograph to just about anyone’s strengths and weakness so at the same time this may be an advantage to him to have this type of dance out of the way and be able to show progress therefore climbing in scores following what could be one of his weaker dance styles.
After seeing what Lindsay did with Alek, I’ve learned to never assume anything with what she can do with how much or little she’s given to work with. Looking forward to seeing what she has David bring to the ballroom. Monday certainly can’t come soon enough! 🙂
Hope the guys can stand out from the dances they have been given. I think Rashad will do well and Mr. T. fun to watch. Umm Boner, fun to look at. 🙂
Wow, Normani has the Quickstep, from her footage last week or so it looked more like a Latin style of dance. Probably her 2nd dance.
I expect Maks & Heather to do well even though both will not admit they have a clear advantage over the others. Instead, Maks wants us to focus more on him being great teacher-lol. Funny others had “ringers” but he’s a great teacher. 🙂
Will be watching next week-lol
There has been zero buzz for Nancy and Artem so I’m disappointed this season.
I agree, Casanova. Artem reminds me of Tony in that way.
Casanova, no buzz for Nancy and Artem where? Social media seems dominated by the rather young. Doubtful that they know who Nancy Kerrigan is. Or care beyond that she’s 47. A “fan” on another thread called 39 year old David Ross an old man! Also, only a few of the pros have really big followings on their own. Artem has more fans than some but nowhere near the following of Val, Maks, or Sharna.
Somewhat relevant to following, I think, the media outlets who cover DWTS seem to only know/consider a few pros and their partners. That might also have to do with publicists also and who TPTB prioritize. While I’d say Simone Biles is a huge get for DWTS, she’s not really getting coverage. Certainly nothing like Laurie Hernandez with Val last season. So because of more time having passed since the Olympics? Or because she’s paired with Sasha, not Val?
Actually, Maks was owning it in a print interview I saw recently with him and Heather. He even said that he expects to be judged to a higher standard. This might be personal growth!!
The DWTS publicists do most of the work on coverage, Colleen. So that should tell you all you need to know, re: Simone. Which is why Sasha has to KILL it with the choreo, because there is one way to get attention with no PR help and that is a killer routine.
Also, and you probably know this, but the youngsters on social media don’t dictate who wins. They can talk all they want, but I will point to Riker, Zendaya and several other young stars with big fanbases who didn’t win. The show is predominantly watched by the 45-70 year old set.
I knew that you’d said that the DWTS publicity department gets a lot of these spots to promote the show. (And cough, their agenda, cough!). But I wondered if the fact that Maks and Val employ a publicist also contributes to their being the “faces” of DWTS.
And yes, we’ve all seen how the young ‘uns spend their energy tweeting and maybe gushing on twitter but not actually swaying the voting that much. Hell, didn’t Zendaya even give her fans instructions on how to cheat and power vote?
But as for Nancy and Artem, she’s gorgeous and has grace. For better or worse, the core DWTS audience knows and probably remembers Nancy. And they should make a striking pair on the dance floor. It’s even possible that the judges will be busy being critical of the 3 biggest ringers and perhaps her journey will be the one to capture hearts this season. At least some of the results are up to the celeb and their pro!
@ Colleen – There are beautiful photos in Daily Mail today of Nancy and Artem doing a photo shoot on the ice. Nancy looks so elegant and Artem looks genuinely happy, though why he is shirtless is beyond me. I’m excited for this pair – just hope Artem won’t stress her out too much and have her doubting herself.
I saw the Daily Mail piece, finally some press for this team. I keep hoping Artem will finally get at least to the semi’s.
Hi Guys! Here’s a post for Nancy and Artem’s photos. https://www.puredwts.com/2017/03/16/stunning-photos-of-dancing-with-the-stars-artem-chigvintsev-and-nancy-kerrigan/ Also, write to our contact link from now on if you don’t see something posted yet. Thanks so much.xx
Yes, the fact that Maks and Val have a publicist certainly helps – but I’m not sure of the rules for appearing as a DWTS couple, if there are any. Cuz lets face it – most of the celebs who come on this show have publicists of their own. Maks and Val’s publicist is rather notorious for cashing in on her clients relationships and personal lives (even calling paps to let them know where their clients are going to be), so if you see a lot of that, that’s why. And it doesn’t hurt that most entertainment shows only care about stupid shit anyway.
