PureDWTS Cast Rumors & Watchout: Sean Spicer & OJ Simpson – Would DWTS Actually Go After Them?
When I started this post a few days ago amid all the joking on Twitter about recently-resigned White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, and recently-paroled felon/former NFL star O.J. Simpson, it was mainly to reassure everyone that I didn’t think DWTS would touch either of these guys with a ten foot pole. But as with many things DWTS-related these days, I’ve been chagrined…
…according to Page Six, apparently ABC may have actually reached out to Sean about the show:
Spicer, who announced his resignation Friday, was seen coming out of high-level meetings at ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox News in Manhattan, according to sources. A source told us some news execs “made the full-court press” as they competed to woo the high-profile spokesman — who brought in solid ratings and plenty of late-night fodder — while others “just kicked the tires.”
But there’s also speculation 45-year-old Spicer’s next stop could be showing off some spicy dance moves on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” Actor Zach Braff jokingly tweeted when Spicer stepped down, “Can’t wait to see Sean Spicer waltz on Dancing With the Stars.”
But a TV insider confirmed to Page Six that the dancing competition show has indeed reached out to the Beltway insider. “That has legs,” the source said.
Given the show’s questionable practices this past season, I guess I’m not totally surprised that they might reach out to someone as sensational as Sean – he would likely appeal to both the conservative-leaning main viewing demographic, and also has a bit of trainwreck appeal. Not sure how charismatic he’d be…or how good of a dancer he’d be…and my gut tells me near-perpetual punching bag Emma would probably get stuck with him. But I’d take Sean anyday over…
…*sigh* O.J., and if this show ever goes after him, I daresay we’ve jumped over a whole line of sharks and there is no hope for this show. It’s one thing to cast a somewhat scandalous political figure – but I think it’s quite another to cast someone involved in one of the most sensational murder trials of our lifetime, and whose acquittal is still a very controversial topic 20-some-odd year later. And aside from all that – O.J.’s 70 and apparently in somewhat poor health, so I’m not sure he’s physically or mentally fit for the rigors of this competition. I REALLY doubt they’d angle to cast The Juice…but Kato Kaelin? That name screams DWTS to me…
…thoughts?
ETA: Vogue here. Yesterday, Politico caught up with Sean Spicer and asked him if he was going to do Dancing With The Stars. He wouldn’t say, but, note that he did indeed meet with ABC the day before. Hmmmm….
Spicer was just back from a whirlwind day in New York City, meeting with network executives about what might come next. “This is the phase where you just say ‘Hi’ to everybody,” he said, noting there was no discussion of money or offers of employment.
“I’m not going to tell you that,” he said of whether he might be a future contestant on “Dancing with the Stars,” a possibility that came up on Wednesday in his meeting with ABC. Spicer still occupies his old office, complete with a couch and a fireplace, while Scaramucci, for now, operates out of a smaller, more modest office two doors down.
I can vouch for Courtney. She’s had this post in drafts for a few days. I swear, Court, …you and Miss Heidi are psychic or something.
Anyway, a yes from me for Sean Spicer if true. But, a huge NO for O.J. I agree this show would hit a new low if that happens.
My friend babysits for Sean Spicer’s kids and apparently his public persona and his actual persona are two different people. I don’t know how I’d feel about him doing the show, but if he does, don’t give him Emma after she just proved how capable she is with a good partner!
And just no to OJ. I don’t think anyone wants to see him.
Please God NO!!!
Sean Spicer would just follow Tom Delay, Rick Perry, and Tucker Carlson even Bristol Pallin as Republicans in need of a make over.
The show should go to hell if OJ is on. But who knows, anything is possible now a days.
I loathe Spicer but I’d take him over OJ
I’m surprised Kato has never been asked I doubt he’d last long
I would be very surprised if Spicer did the show. I think he probably has a career in front of him as a commentator or as a “consultant”, like most of the White House people do. Granted Rick Perry did the show (and then somehow became Energy Secretary), but Perry has the personality and the demeanor for it.
There are few people I think DWTS wouldn’t cast, and OJ is one of them. Casting someone that a large section of their fans believe literally got away with murder would be insane. Now Kato? That’s actually a really awesome observation, Courtney. I would have never thought about him, but he would be OJ- adjacent, a way to tap into the renewed interest over the case without casting OJ. If they haven’t thought about it, they might after reading this blog.
If there were problems with protestors for Ryan Lockte what do you think would happen if any of those 3 were on? If the producers are stupid enough to have any of those men, next season will be the DWTS funeral procession….and rightly so.
If they cast OJ Simpson, the show will be permanently damaged beyond repair. They might as well make Jerry Springer the new host, as that is the direction the producers seem to be going. I can see it all now, they will add a new “ones that got away” theme night where OJ, Casey Anthony, and Robert Blake battle it out to see who can do the best tango.
Sean Spicer sounds like a typical DWTS get. Most DWTS viewers are republicans which they will know and random tv viewers would tune in to see him hopefully embarrass himself. They know exactly what they’re doing. It’s a very similar get to Rick Perry. Unfortunately for Emma, I think we may have found her next partner, then again I’m sure she won’t mind being a mirrorball champion now.
Hell no to OJ (that would be a horrible idea given his past. Sean Spicer on the other hand would be something I would love to see….mostly for the SNL skits lol. Then again he could be fun though so if be all for it despite not being a fan of his at all.
If either of these two are cast on the show I will not watch it this season. I really, really don’t want to watch them dance or hear their life stories. YUK!!!
Hit submit too quickly lol. If I recall correctly from what I remember from when it happened (I was like 4 or 5) and from the miniseries, kato wasn’t exactly memorable for me. Saying that, I’d hope they wouldn’t go for him either. Maybe marcia Clark?
@Vin – Kato may have been a small character within the context of the trial, but afterward he parlayed those 15 minutes of fame into some small acting roles and numerous forays into reality tv and game show hosting. He’s become a bit of pop culture fixture, really – which is why I think he’s DWTS-bait.
Marcia’s cool, but I don’t think DWTS is her gig.
And just to add: no, nobody is actually saying that OJ has been asked to do the show. I just saw a sh*t ton of tweets joking about it on Twitter, to the point where I’m sure some nincompoop is not going to understand that it’s a joke, and it’s gonna get telephoned down the line until someone reports “OJ Simpson in talks to do DWTS”. Consider this your preemptive strike of “No, I don’t think anyone is honestly asking him to do the show.”
As for Spicer – DWTS may want him, but I could see FOX snapping him up in a heartbeat. Or him getting a multimillion-dollar book deal. DWTS is small potatoes next to those kinds of opportunities.
I think this show would hit a pretty new low with Spicer as well. Of course, when the dancing gets really bad, he can always hide in the bushes. 😀
I don’t think most DWTS viewers are republicans – I think most of them are conservative. Those, as we’ve seen recently, can be two very different things.
And EVERYONE knows Sean Spicer at this point. If you don’t, you’re not paying nearly enough attention to what is going on in this country.
I think Sean would be wise to hold off on the book deal for at least 4 years. If you look at how Sessions is getting savaged by the guy who hired him, it would be smarter to wait.
If this show actually has approached Sean Spicer and he agrees to do it, give him to anyone EXCEPT Emma! She doesn’t deserve a partner like that after what she proved she could do last year. She deserves better and if that were to ever come up, I would hope she could and would fight it. We all know others fight for who they get, so why can’t she?
If it got out that this show actually approaches OJ, I will no longer watch. Just knowing that they would be willing to have him on would be enough for me to walk away. I know his parole had nothing to do with the murders, but those murders will never go away. He will never have a normal life and doesn’t deserve it. The families of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman stopped having a normal life the day they died. Fine, he’s out, just leave him alone. Don’t give him any more attention than he has already received.
@Joanne B, you are absolutely right. The security that the show would have to hire would be unbelievable. Anything short of that could bring a lot of trouble. Washington is enough of a circus, DWTS doesn’t need to bring any part of it to the show.
What a joke!!!! I would “NOT” watch the show if OJ were on. That’s an insult to the people that have watched the show since the beginning.
Spicer would also be a joke!!! I hope his family and friends would “NOT” allow it. They should use every means possible to talk him. All the DWTS wants is the publicity.
Meh. Redemption story arcs should only be for those who deserve it, which Sean and OJ both don’t. I’d rather have Melissa McCarthy dressed as Sean Spicer on the dance floor. =P
Hell no to both lol!
Rick Perry, Presidential Candidate and The Secretary of Energy was just on DWTS so this is perfect for Spicey.
I have always felt that DWTS should keep politicians out of the equation. What makes them celebrity material anyway?
As for O.J., just how low would the producers stoop? I definitely would not watch the show PERIOD!
NO JUST NO to OJ
Whatever one thinks of Spicer I think he’d be wise to stay out of the limelight awhile or go the commentator route. For better or more likely worse the show is GOING to milk his connection to TRUMP and SNL. I don’t see it going well for him or his partner no matter what he is REALLY like.
Oh and NO to anyone associated with O.J. (Kato Marcia Clark etc.) Neither O.J. nor his crime deserve any more publicity either directly or indirectly.
Oh I really hope neither one of these two get cast. Let’s cast mellissa McCarthy as Sean spicer instead much funnier.
In the name of all that’s decent, NO!!!!!!
No to O J but how about Judge Ito and the dancing Itos. (Not serious). I would rather see Bill O’Reilly than Sean Spicer.
Absolute no to Sean Spicer and OJ Simpson!!
Trying to decide whether him refusing to talk about it is because he thinks it’s ridiculous and won’t gratify it with a response…or whether he’s honestly considering it and contractually can’t say anything…
I can see Spicer doing it but not OJ. I imagine they’d being back a throwback pro for him like they did Ryan.
Now there’s speculation that Rence Preibus could join Spicey
Um… NO! Just NO! To both Sean and OJ. And honestly, if OJ is ever cast on this show, it just might be the final current call. And a huge disrespect and a disgrace to all parties that have suffered with this tragedy.
Yea Sandy, I agree about both parties being cast, but especially OJ. That would be the show’s Ragnarok. A disaster that would herald the end of the show.
A big NO to anyone affiliated with Donald Trump. He’s a disgrace to our country. I won’t support anything or anyone associated with his name.
Mods feel free to delete my statement if you like.
