DWTS Season 19, Week 3 – Dancing by the Numbers!

So, everyone was surprised to see Randy go – as was I. But in looking back to last weeks “Dancing by the Numbers” post, we probably shouldn’t have been. We’re dealing with SMALL numbers here, and Tavis and Randy were both in a four-way tie, only 11k votes per million votes cast above Michael.  What does that mean? Well, it means that for Betsey and Tommy to be safe, they only needed ONE more vote than Randy and Tavis. ONE.  It also means that Michael got 11k more vote per million votes cast than both Tavis and Randy (at least). Really, is that SO surprising? Watching Betsey and Tommy last night, I’m not surprised either of the survived. Michael over Tavis – yes, we called that. Michael over Randy?? Ummm…that’s a bit more surprising. But the DWTS audience has shown time and again that they love guys like Michael.  Problem is, they also love the Betsey’s and the Tommy’s – as do I.

That means one of two things. First is that Michael’s time has very possibly run out. The second is that if Michael’s time hasn’t run out, watch out Antonio.  But I get ahead of myself – I haven’t even looked at the numbers yet – that’s just my sense of things in Week 3, going into week four (ALREADY!!).

Anyway, let’s take a look at last night’s scores and percentages:

Table 1

Since Randy had a score awarded to him, I’ve included that in my total. Do they do it that way? Well, they say total judges points awarded, but who knows. At this stage it makes little difference in the votes needed. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 4 – Who’s Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)

Well, some interesting dances this week. I will have to see all of the song/dance combinations to see if I really believe these songs were chosen by the dancers. Bethany and Janel having the same style AGAIN stretches credulity a bit far, if you ask me. It also occurs to me that the reason Alfonso was underscored last week is because they knew he’d come roaring back with “the Carlton” this week. :-)

ETA: Welp, some signals got crossed and we made a boo-boo – Lea is dancing to “Dance with My Father” and Jonathan has a samba.  Lo siento :-( Bloggers are human,  too.  And we’re fairly certain that Janel’s dancing to Sam Smith’s cover of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” – which is pretty awesome, if you haven’t seen it yet.

ETA2: Same song, different artist apparently, for Bethany and Derek.

ETA3: Finally got Mike’s song!!

ETA4: Hey, Rob Wade replied to me on Twitter!! I was whining about not getting the rules for the “You Raise the Paddle” thingy and he responded with “Go to abc.com at 7:30, get signed in and wait for the first couple” – something along those lines. And guess who’s up first!!

DWTS Season 19 Week THREE!! Let’s discuss tonight’s show! (Spoilers)

Looking forward to some entertaining dancing tonight. Note I used the words “entertaining” as opposed to “good”. :-)  Again, DWTS wants us to pimp the livestream so….you can view Lacey’s Stream on our site, just click the link.

Once again, comment to your hearts contents, as long as you remember the show night rules.

  1. Our server gets totally hosed when people sit at their computer and click “refresh” constantly. Post a comment, then walk away for five minutes so that others have a chance…and so that Courtney and I can actually post on the site. :-)
  2. THIS SITE IS NOT TWITTER. Do not post like you are on twitter. You get one warning and then I put you in time out. :-) We need context and content. Believe it or not there are a lot of people who don’t watch the east coast feed of the show, so they don’t know what the hell you’re talking about when you post a comment that says, “Boy, that sucked.”  If you want to say “____ and ____’s dance was not good at all, crappy choreo” that’s fine. That would be context. It is good. :-D  Remember, if you post five one liners in five minutes, you’ve broken rule number 1. ;-)

We start this weeks discussion with some spoilers for next week!!  Hee. Next week is personal story/greatest year week – however they want to phrase it.  If Alfonso makes it through, he’s doing Jazz to “It’s Not Unusual” – apparently complete with the “Carlton” dance. :-) I, for one, can’t wait.

Another week, another female bump and grind. I was never so happy to see the male pros with Cheryl.

Votes and scores from LAST week?? Sca-rewed! I would guess Michael. Then they make Randy go first AGAIN and tell him he’s in jeopardy?? WTF – who let Conrad back in the ballroom???

Okay, I’m multi-tasking too much and I’m missing the show. Dang it. What I do know is that they called some scary people SAFE, including Michael and Betsy. This makes me very worried for Randy.

Beautiful dance from Sadie and Mark. Loved it. Very sweet. Love Derek instructing Sadie on how not to cry because “that’s what they want, that’s what they want”

A perfect score in week three? I smell a shocking elimination in about three weeks.

Holy s#£t!! Tommy!! Love him!!

Totally love Bethany and Derek’s routine, much harder than Janel and Val,… Still don’t think we should have a perfect score in week three. But I’ll take it just to make Val crazy :-). I was concerned Derek might burst into tears with the scores. :-)

So, the final three standing were Antonio, Jonathan and Randy….

Randy and Karina were eliminated. Boooooo….

Derek Hough’s DWTS 19, Week 3 Blog – On Patricia Kelly and Bethany’s Ankle

Great news…and not so great news in Derek’s blog this week. Since we had a bunch of discussion on “why does Derek get to use ‘Singing in the Rain'” and Courtney and I had posited that since he knows Patricia Kelly, that he perhaps has a leg up on the others. One of the benefits of fostering lots of relationships in the dance community, beyond the ballroom.  Here’s an excerpt from TV Guide:

This week, we’re doing the jazz to “Singin’ in the Rain.” My very first dance performance ever was to “Singing in the Rain” and I was about 3 or 4 years old. I don’t remember it at all. It’s on video somewhere. It’s me running around the stage with an umbrella. I was the only boy with a bunch of girls. I need to find that. It’d actually be really funny if we can include it in the package. I’ve always wanted to dance to this song, but I never envisioned doing it with a celebrity as s competition piece. I always thought I would do it as a Macy’s Stars of Dance piece. So I had to approach this differently. It’s not about what my body wants to do; it’s about what her body wants to do. We’re using an umbrella for it. Shocking, right? I just gotta make sure we don’t use the one Charlie used last season. I’m excited about it. It’s going to look beautiful. We’ve got little things in there that will be fun. We’re keeping it classic, but adding things in a little modern twist and musicality in there.

The cool thing is Patricia Kelly, Gene Kelly’s widow, wrote a beautiful email to me, allowing us to use the song and saying, “I’d be happy for you to use the song and to do the dance.” It was really lovely. Normally, it’s hard to get clearance for music in general, so it was really wonderful and humbling to get that from her. It’s kind of funny: We got a tweet from Taylor Swift the first week, a tweet from Meghan Trainor the second week and an email from Patricia Kelly the third week. It’s great and a little surreal to hear from the artists and to know that they’ve seen our dance. What will happen in Week 4? (Knock on wood!)

DWTS 19, Week 2 on Afterbuzz TV

Once again, I’m posting it without having a chance to watch the whole thing.  I love Keo. That is all. :-)  I’ll add my comments in the comments when I do see the whole thing. My one gripe is that they mention Lea’s training – but don’t acknowledge Janel’s. Janel has training in Jazz, Hip Hop, Broadway and other styles of dance and it’s much more recent than Lea’s.

Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 3 – Who’s Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)

This week, as people who are site members might be aware, we have a lot of info, but a lot of it isn’t really clear yet. :-) It’s still a work in progress.  Here’s the parts we’re fairly sure of:

ETA: I totally called this one on Twitter yesterday – Singing in the Rain by Derek Hough? Perfect. :-) Now is it that actual song? I’m assuming yes.

ETA2: The subtle-as-a-sledgehammer hints continue at the DancingABC Instagram Mike’s Twitter, as he pretty much confirms he’s gonna be Robin Hood.

ETA3: So, Len said during this past Monday’s show that Alfonso was doing V.Waltz, but his wife says he’s doing quickstep.

ETA4: We’re kinda doubting that Alfonso’s wife is right…

ETA5: …and I’m sure you can see why now :-P No clue what the hell he & Witney are gonna do to this song…I’ve listened to it at least 10 times, and cannot find any strong semblance of a foxtrot or quickstep rhythm.  It’s a tad fast for a foxtrot, but not even enough for quickstep…who knows.  But I’m sure whatever it is – Alfonso’s gonna put on a helluva show 8-) Looks like Jonathan’s Mean Girls song didn’t clear so he ended up with his 2nd choice.  I have to wonder if they’re bending the rules a bit and going with the Amy Winehouse version, though, as the Beyonce version is rather slow.  Looks like “Pour Some Sugar on Me” was a safety song – but part of me kinda wants to see the pros dance to it instead ;-) And a different source confirmed that Bethany & Derek’s dance style is jazz – with quite a bit of tap influence ;-) -Court-

ETA6: ZOMG PLOT TWIST LOLZ!!!! 8-O Apparently “I Feel Pretty” is now off the table – and Vajanel has been seen rehearsing to “America” instead.  Wondering if Val may have jumped the gun on confirming they had cleared “I Feel Pretty” – either that, or “I Feel Pretty” wasn’t working out, and they asked to switch songs (after switching dances already, mind you).  Food for thought – draw your own conclusions.  Confirmed Betsey & Alfonso’s dances – Tony is apparently doing some gorgeous lifts with Betsey, so they do, indeed, have contemporary; and Alfonso’s old lady was right – he is doing quickstep.  How? I’m not sure…but I’m certainly intrigued. :-)

ETA7: We have a more detailed explanation of what went down with West Side Story-gate – wanna hear it? Looka hurr.

ETA8: We can always rely on Cheryl to share her dance order…see below. :-)

ETA9: Vogue here and scroll below to see a new “Movie Night” commercial. Here’s to tonight!

ETA10: Probably the last update before showtime – and before Heidi’s discussion post goes live in less than 10 minutes (complete with spoilers about next week’s show!) Apparently Randy & Karina are opening the show – AGAIN – and Betsey & Tony might be going 3rd…they said they are on Instagram, but Michael’s racing team also tweeted that he’s going 3rd.  So….who knows. Enjoy the show, kids 8-)

Tavis Smiley Blames Lack of Rehearsal for DWTS Elimination

Seriously, you guys need to read this. Not only does Tavis insist on talking in 3rd person, but he’s actually blaming DWTS for taking him on knowing he had a book tour. Um, dude? You’re in charge of your life, you signed on. Can you believe this guy? Be sure to read the whole article from People. Discuss.

Tavis Smiley has a bone to pick with the producers of Dancing with the Stars.

The talk-show host, who on Tuesday became the second celebrity to get booted from the competition, said there was no way he could fit in rehearsal time with his latest book tour. And the producers knew it, he insisted.

“Producers shouldn’t sign up people who can’t commit the time when they are told up front that the person is going to be on a book tour,” Smiley told PEOPLE immediately after the show. “We gave them the entire book-tour schedule in advance! This is not about sour grapes. It’s about saying I think the fans deserve to have stars on this show who have the time to commit to learning the dances so [partner Sharna Burgess] and other professionals don’t waste their time trying to do something that’s just humanly impossible.”

DWTS Season 19 Week 2 RESULTS!! Let’s discuss tonight’s show! (Spoilers)

Getting excited for the pro dances tonight!!  Derek and Jules with the other male pros – sounds like they might be doing something from their tour? Maybe?

DWTS Season 19, Week 2 – Dancing by the Numbers!

I was cranky (apparently) when watching the show last night, cuz I wasn’t terribly impressed by anyone – except Bethany and Sadie, CAI’s least favorite girls.  Well, I should say I *loved* Alfonso’s dance as well, but I could see what the judges were talking about.  Totally don’t understand why Sadie got totally hosed. I’m thinking I’ll have to rewatch it. I think she danced better – more personality, less mugging – than Janel, and Janel is the one with training. Even though we should be calling her JanelNotADancer because it’s not getting mentioned on the show.  I did see Len on All Access right after the show and he seemed to be regretting some of his marks. He only mentioned overmarking Jonathan, but he wanted to say more. Maybe about Sadie since she had so recently danced??

Anyway, let’s take a look at the Scores and percentages:

Wk 2 Table 1

Well, I don’t know who I would put in first place, but I’m not sure it’s Lea. I love Lea, she’s a beautiful dancer and woman – but when I can see posture problems and wonder why the judges are raving, you know you got problems. Anyway, she was in jeopardy last week so she may not be getting the votes. But I do think there is enough of a cushion for her to be safe to dance another day. I also think there is little chance of Alfonso, Sadie or Bethany going anywhere – not yet anyway. Janel is likely fine as well, although I’m afraid her time will come.

That brings us to the lower half of the leaderboard. Well, lower two-thirds? Antonio I think is likely fine, for now, but only because there is much bigger cannon fodder than him. I also can’t be the only one who finds Randy hot. :-) The low man on the totem pole, score wise, is Michael. While I agree with what many have been saying, about him not having quite the charm combined with more limited dance skill, part of me thinks that his onesie giving him a wedgie may have bought him two weeks, not just one. I could certainly be wrong, but I’m leaning toward Tavis. But let’s look and see what it will take for Michael to be safe:

Wk 2 Table 2

See, this is where it gets tough. Michael may be more likeable than Tavis, but that four points translates to 11k votes per million votes cast. That is tough. But he has four different people to choose from when it comes to beating them. Problem is that a couple of them are really likable as well. I adore Tommy and I can’t believe he would be going anywhere. I also thought Betsey was great last night – but she’s a tad on the weird and wild side. Tavis just talks too damn much and I find him ponderous and a bit annoying. I doubt I’m alone.

So, for Michael to be safe, he needs ONE of the following:
– 11k more votes per million votes cast than either Tavis, Tommy, Betsey or Randy, OR;
– He needs about 16.6k more votes per million votes cast than Jonathan…

…and so on, as shown in Table 2.

Personally, I think he’s only within striking distance of the 11k votes of the people directly above him. But I’ve been wrong before. :-) Let’s say that Michael is getting the votes – what do Tavis, Randy, Betsey and Tommy need to be safe??

Wk 2 Table 3

Well, not very much at all. Each only needs ONE vote per million votes cast than the others in their little group, and all of them only need 5,525 more votes per million votes cast than Jonathan. Hell, Sadie and Antonio are in easy striking distance as well…if not for the fact of Tavis and Michael being down below them, I’d be worried for them. Bethany too. But, I don’t see anyone other than Randy, Betsey and Tommy MAYBE making the leap over Jonathan. See, the one drawback to hosing a pro (Allison – deserved or not) is that it generates sympathy votes.

Anyway, I think that Michael can only beat Tavis. I think that Tavis might beat Betsey, but I dunno. I don’t think he’s beating either Tommy or Randy, and I don’t think he’s catching Jonathan, Sadie or Antonio. I think the real bottom two is likely Michael and Tavis, but don’t be surprised to see Jonathan in jeopardy whether he’s really near the bottom or not. After Allison’s scolding and her speaking up in the Skybox, combined with the shock value of Betsey being safe again, I kinda look for the last three left standing to be Michael, Tavis and Jonathan.

There’s kind of a lot of weak dancers with great personalities, so I could be way off base here. At the end of the night, I think Tavis goes home. If it’s not him, then Michael. If there’s a shocker…Randy because he went so early in the night.
