DWTS Pro Allison Holker Discusses “Switch Up Week” for Yahoo

Allison is back to blogging (and yoga?!) after giving birth to her gorgeous baby. She writes for Yahoo.com and her favorite dances will surprise some of you. Click the link to read the whole thing.

Favorite Dance of the Night: Mark and Ginger
Mark Ballas has always been one of my favorite choreographers. He has a very creative way of using his partners’ strengths and applying those strengths to his dances. He allows their personalities to shine through the dance, and you as a viewer feel as though you know his partners better after seeing his dances. And that is exactly what he did with Switch-Up week. He was partnered with bubbly Ginger Zee, and they performed a fun, energetic salsa that lit up the ballroom floor. It was fiery, sexy, and exciting, which is just how I feel about Ginger. This was a great partnership, and I hope to see more of this side of Ginger moving forward each week.

Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 5 – Switch UP Live Blog!! (Spoilers)

This week’s challenge is that I’m sick AND Derek is apparently on Jane the Virgin at 9pm EST. 🙂 So, I’ll be flipping over at 9, flipping back at 9:30 and then picking up the few minutes I missed after the show. 🙂 How not fun. 😉 I’ll probably be flipping back and forth, honestly. Tivo’s are a wonderful thing.

LOVED the opening number! Very simple, but I liked the way it was laid out and I particularly liked the colors – it was very colorful.

Maks will be “just”. Okay. We’ll see.  Oh and the byplay with Erin has already started. Come on. We know.

Oh Witney, you are annoying me. You’ll make Wanya better? You hate switchup, remember.

Okay, I think Witney did well by Wanya – loved the costuming and the song. I thought it was a good tango, actually. Disagree with Len.

That was overly harsh on Wanya – and Maks, really? Someone figured out who baby bros competition is.

I love Kim…and I adore the look she gets on her face in the opening segment when Keo touches her. Gorgeous. But the choreography was too sharp and she didn’t really smooth out or finish her movements. That’s what Sasha needs to work on.

Really, Maks is trying much harder to make an impact.  Overly harsh…and a guy (and his brother) who wastes an unbelievable amount of time getting started dancing really has no room to be so critical.

I’m sorry, but I don’t watch this show to just have them crap on every dance. I sure hope they don’t save all their kind words for Val and his actual partner.

Love Peta – I think she did a good job here with Doug. Looked like a proper tango and he seemed less stiff than in previous weeks.

Heh….someone on twitter just said that Meryl is 3-4 inches taller than Kim and Maks is an inch (at least) shorter than Keo. LOL. BS as usual.

Judges very kind to Doug, yet he gets worse scores. Hmmm….

OMG…the questions section. Hilarious. Wanya!!! Dude….

You have time for another James Bay number? Hey, I like the dude, but I also like longer dances.  Incidentally, I was watching season 6 and 7 for a thing I’m doing for PureDerekHough and those dances were LONG. These celebs would never survive them. Seriously, week 1 Shannon and Derek was like a minute 30.

That “nice glass of merlot” has an Emmy Nomination.

Hey, Ginger danced a whole routine!! It started out a little weird with her top half doing some weird things, but she really found her stride about halfway through.  Much more content that last week. Better executed. But the bar was set low. Of course, they are starting to over praise her yet again – it wasn’t THAT great. It was good. It was certainly better than last week. But come ON.

Okay, time for me to switch over for a dose of Derek. I’ll be in and out and I’ll fill in anything I miss in a bit. 🙂

So I switched between JTV and DWTS like four times and the entire time they were pimping…I mean, talking to Ginger.

*****

Peeked back in to see Maks hose his brother’s biggest competition. Asshole.

****

Didn’t know Jane the Virgin is an hour long show. Peeked back in to see Von and Witney do a pretty good Jive. There was a problem in the beginning, but they pulled it together.  I notice that those who pose no threat to Val and Ginger get a much kinder Maks.  Still think he’s the least qualified former pro to be a judge. Ability to be nasty doesn’t make you qualified.

****

Nyle just blows my mind. Sharna did right by him this week and crafted a beautiful dance that he executed beautifully. I couldn’t see a thing wrong with it.  Okay…flipping back. 🙂 Oh…but man, did Sharna screw up early on in the package. Assumptions are bad, my dear.

Okay, now I’m back. So glad I could see Derek dance salsa with (amazing dancer) Gina Rodriguez tonight. Pretty much the only thing that saved the evening. Oh, and a Maks fan told me I was a Derek fan in the comments. No sh*t, sherlock!!  To think I stood up for Maks and wished him back over Val. You can forget that deal. Maks wishes he was half the judge that Julianne is. Say what you want – I had lots of gripes about her judging at times, but she was never a dick.

Antonio….I kinda liked this dance and I feel like Karina got more out of him than Sharna has. I feel like it was better than his absurdly high scored dance last week. It’s almost like the judges just found out that he wasn’t showing up for rehearsal or something.

And Karina has an amazing rocking body. Frankly, I thought those scores were a bit ridiculous. Funniest thing all night tonight is Karina’s comments on the judges. That’s how you kill with kindness, folks. 😀

I wasn’t actually crazy about Paige’s dance. She performed it well, but I have to agree that it didn’t look very rumba-y. That said….that wasn’t her fault. She performed VERY well what she was given by Sasha. This is where the judging is OTT. They (Maks, mostly) are judging the choreographer instead of the celebrity. Yes, it is absolutely a team effort and they have to be graded as a team. Yet, you hear people like MAKS bitch and moan in the past about Derek being scored high for amazing choreography – this is no different. Only worse because you’re hurting a celebs chances because of what the choreographer chooses to do. I think Maks is working through some envy issues here – and it could be directed at any number of people. It’s almost like he and Len are trying to wrest DWTS back to the strictly ballroom days.  Now, I wouldn’t have too much of a problem with that…but it’s something that should be laid out before the season starts, instead of springing it on them in the middle of the competition. Let’s face it – the good choreographers choreograph creatively to the music – and that wasn’t rumba music. Period.  There are so many problems with the judging tonight that I could go on all night. But I’ve been sick all day and right now my head hurts. 🙂

I talked about Von above but I liked his dance better the second time around. I think he could have gotten 8s and it would have been fine.

I also talked about Nyle above, too, and he’s still amazing and probably the best dance of the night so far.

So, why did Jodie get the pimp spot? Does anyone really think that the audience is on the edge of it’s seat waiting to see her reunite with Val? Beyond one fangirl in the comments, I doubt it.

Well, both Jodie and Val’s best dance of the season so far! Perhaps they got the pimp spot because Val choreographed and entire dance and they started immediately?  Jodie did a great job. My only question is why Val hasn’t given this quality of dance to Ginger so far??  All that said, I don’t think it should be higher than 3rd place for the night, after Wanya and Nyle.

As we said earlier in the week – no elimination this week. Next weeks elimination will  consist of scores and votes from tonight and last week.

Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 6 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

Well, after the horror that was switch-up week it will almost be nice to go on to “Famous Dances Night”. I say almost because…I’m not a fan of this particular week. I said this in the live blog yesterday, but in watching much of seasons 5 through 10 for a thing I’m working on for PureDerekHough, I realized two things: first, they danced for a good minute and a half even in the first week of the season, and second – they JUST DANCED. Regular dances, with the exception of fun stuff like Derek and Joanna’s futuristic Paso Doble and Nicole’s 50’s Paso. That’s as outrageous as they got. It was quite refreshing. Do you think we’ll EVER get back to just dancing??

ETA: We have our first spoiler for famous dances week! This one is kind of a tough one, but I think Von has the personality to carry it off even if he isn’t up-to-snuff with his dance skills. Although, full disclosure: I was really hoping the hint he gave about Napoleon Dynamite a few weeks ago was a clue that he was doing “Canned Heat” 😛 -Court-

ETA2: We have a few more, and it’s unfortunately looking like we’re gonna have a bunch of reused songs (which is to be expected, really, considering what a beast it can be to get songs cleared). I feel like Nyle’s song/concept has been done to death – isn’t this like the 4th or 5th time someone has used it? Helio, Rick, Shawn, somebody else? He will do well, but I worry that it’s not going to be terribly special in the grand scheme of things. As for Ginger – source says she is having a hard time really being “Nasty”, but I daresay she’s gotta be better than Candace, who danced a pretty kindergarten-y jazz to it back in season 18.  I much preferred Lil Kim’s samba 8-D Anyone else find it funny that Val gets Janet Jackson as an iconic dance for the 2nd season in a row? -Court- Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 4 – Dancing by the Numbers

There is SO much I could say about the scoring this past week on DWTS – so much BS, so little time. It’s already been mostly said, no need to go over it again. Ridiculous.

Ridiculous scoring leads to problematic leader boards! I think it’s very unlikely that there will be an elimination this week, what with the switchup and all – they’ve not done one to date, I see no reason to change now, UNLESS they have succeeded in getting rid of Doug. If it’s mission accomplished, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them do one. But I am working under the assumption there won’t be one. Here are the numbers from Week 4: Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 5 SWITCH UP – Who’s Dancing What…and With WHOM?

Well, it’s time once again for the switch up. We’ll see once again the producers agenda…or will we?? I can’t be bothered to track the voting any more since it hasn’t reflected reality once since they started doing the switch up.

ETA: And our first confirmed switch couple is… 😀 I’m pretty happy with this one – I think they’re gonna work well together. -Court-

ETA2: And it looks like the updates are coming fast & furious – it looks & sounds from Von’s latest Snapchat that he got Lindsay, and source confirms that Wanya got Witney…which means that Peta got Doug and Karina got Antonio.  I daresay the only person that probably doesn’t benefit from the switch is Wanya, but thankfully he’s so rad that it likely won’t matter.  Antonio’s got a rude awakening coming his way…and I can’t wait to watch 😀

ETA3: Judging from the snazzy hat on the silhouette they showed of Ginger’s partner on GMA, she got Mark. Other couples coming up…-Court-

ETA4: Rest of the couples posted, and Mark says he & Ginger have salsa next week. Thoughts? I’ll be back in a bit, gotta head to work…-Court-

ETA5: Songs posted…today is kicking my ass. -Court- Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 4 – Live Blog!! (Spoilers)

Back from New Orleans and currently on the Kale Smoothie diet as a result. This may result in general crankiness during the show tonight. Hold on to your hats. Two wishes: Dick Van Dyke and Derek Hough. 🙂

Heh. Not overly impressed with the opening number – but it is Mandy Moore, so there you go. It was an improvement from previous numbers  – until we got to the Val pimpage portion. :::rolls eyes:::

Aladdin wore a fedora and there was shiny spandex? Seriously, I’m asking.  This is an unfortunate position for Sharna because they did pretty well…and on little rehearsal time. Gonna be really hard to get him to practice more. Very kind edit too, from what I’ve heard. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 3 – Dancing by the Numbers

Well, we sadly all called Mischa’s elimination – it was a bit of a no-brainer when looking at the numbers.

But what now? Very tough call.

When I look at the numbers on weeks like this one and I have to wonder if it’s all planned in advance. I mean, really – the three football players tied at the bottom?? I have a hard time with “coincidences” like this. But then you look at the cast as a whole and you realize that maybe all is how it should be. Personally, I think Kim’s dance was a bit safe and probably not worthy of a 22, as much as I love her and Sasha both. I also don’t think that Jodie danced at the same level as Paige – but I get that Paige may have gotten docked for lack of content.

Marla and Ginger are also tied and I actually agree with this one. Marla has a bit of a timing problem, but Tony is actually doing a pretty good job with her. She wasn’t as soft as she was in weeks past. Ginger I just plain feel sorry for – her choreographer is NOT serving her well. Who was it that said it was contemporary by the numbers?? Yeesh. And YES, I know that Val didn’t choreograph it – but perhaps he should step away from Jenna and on to an actual contemporary choreographer. Doesn’t he know any? Is this what happens when you stick exclusively to the Fam?? Ya know, the very worst thing I can say about a couple on this show is that they’re boring – and unfortunately, Ginger ain’t the only one. Anyway, here are the scores and the percentages: Read more..

I just love Kim and Sasha – such positive, fun people. Kim’s laugh is amazing! Love how Kim doesn’t fault NeNe for her view point.

Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 3 – Live Blog!! (Spoilers)

Hi everyone! I’m in New Orleans eating and drinking way too much…and odds are good I won’t make it back to the hotel in time for the beginning of the show. In the event I don’t make it, Courtney will be fulfilling your snark quotient for tonight. 🙂 Stay tuned to see if I make it back. 😉 Hint: I’m not going to try really hard.

Court taking over 🙂 Heidi’s currently eating jambalaya and cornbread, so you’re stuck with me tonight. Predictions before showtime: I don’t think we’ll see any 10’s, but I think we may finally see some 9’s. I see Wanya & Nyle continuing to dominate, and maybe Antonio finally rising above Von.

Ehhh…Ginger was just ok this week.  Choreography let her down yet again – didn’t feel like contemporary, just a cheerleader doing contemporary-by-numbers.

And surprisingly, the judges finally get real when scoring Ginger and give her a mediocre 21.  Are we witnessing the narrative changing?

Doug is giving me all the feels. My god, this song guts me.  Actually quite a lovely dance from Doug – only one slight bobble at the end.  I hope they don’t beat him up.

I guess 20 ain’t bad for Doug – they probably could have been a lot harder on him.

“I’m 4’7″, but still above ground!” Charlotte Rae, with the quote of the night 😛

A very cute, appropriate foxtrot – gotta give Sasha credit for being there for his partner with good choreography.

Ugh, are we really doing the switch-up again??? And already? And with an added layer of complication??? 🙁

Kim gets a 22 and is thrilled. I love how excited she gets 🙂

C’mon, drum solo!!!

Was not expecting to see that when Von took his shirt off.  Helllllllo tats & muscles. Overall, an interesting dance – would have liked a bit more extension, but he ROCKED the lifts.

Carrie Ann needs to be directing this critique about “not working hard enough” to Antonio, rather than Von.

Von gets a 20, and while I probably would have given it a 21, I guess I can see why Len’s all cranky.

Marla is just so relentlessly positive. I love it.

Not a bad effort by Marla – maybe a tad cautious, but maybe I’m just so used to Tony’s partners being so…non-mobile…that I’m actually kind of impressed by what she did do.

Marla gets a 21, and we end the first half of the show with only one person managing to eke an 8 out of the judges.  I would start looking for the 8’s & 9’s to come out in the next hour.

I see Antonio is taking a page out of the Ginger playbook and bringing in the kid. Oooookay.

Ok, the concept was sweet, but Antonio actually looked really stiff and kinda jumpy to me – and he was doing some wacky stuff with his face.  But watch the judges gush – they need Antonio to happen.

So. Tired. Of. “Boomin’!”.  And it’s only week 3. Antonio gets a 20, and so far I’m left feeling a bit lukewarm about the show – Doug & Kim were bright spots, but the rest have ranged from non-event to ok.  Paige, I’m counting on you to raise the bar…

Well, that felt more like a paso doble/contemporary fusion, but it was cool to watch.  Just watch Len bitch about content…

…Len bitches a bit, Carrie Ann defends Mark’s choreo, all in all, Paige ends up with a 23.  Ok, I accept that.

I think Jodie is absolutely stunning – and in person, she’s even more gorgeous. And kind, and funny, and perfect.  And I want to see good things happen for her 🙂

I think we just saw both Jodie AND Keo evolve a bit – I would have liked a bit less flailing and some more in-hold stuff, but overall, I got the message they were sending.  And I loved Jodie’s extensions.

Jodie gets a 23 and I think that’s probably right on the money. And the scores are SLOWLY going up…but here comes Mischa & Artem, who seemed to be absent from the background up until now…hmmm…

If nothing else, Mischa had FUN. Not much samba, but I guess I can’t really ask for much – at least she stayed on-time and semi-in-step with Artem.

Mischa gets an 18, which is probably a bit kind – but given that she’s probably headed home anyway, I don’t know that it’s really going to mean much in the great scheme of things.

And Wanya knocks it out of the park yet AGAIN.  His feet, his arms, his musicality, his presentation, his investment in the dance…just PERFECT.  He won’t get a 1o, but I hope he gets the first 9 of this season…

…note that the judges seemed to get a bit nitpicky.  Part of the narrative, guys.  He gets a 24, which I think is underscored, but now I’m wondering if they’re reserving the 9’s for Nyle…or next week.

I love seeing Peta sticking up for Nyle and for calling out Carrie Ann.

Nyle does a bang-up job and proves Carrie Ann wrong.  Maybe a tad off-balance here and there and a little eager, but he’s got SO much potential.

Oh look – Carrie Ann is backpedaling and hemming & hawing. I do agree a bit with Len, though – I would like to see Peta use a bit more light & shade in her choreography.  Everything has been go, go, go this season…

Nyle gets the first 9 of the season and a 25.  I would probably have given Wanya one as well, but once again, in the great scheme of things – not likely to matter, and I could see Wanya getting the high score next week.

In jeopardy: Doug & Karina, Mischa & Artem, and Jodie & Keo.  That last one is troubling.

Going home: Mischa & Artem

Fairly certain all 3 angels predicted a Mischa exit.
