DWTS Season 16, Week 7 – The Details of Latin Week (Weigh In With Your Opinions)!

We’ve been having this discussion in an older post, and as a result some of you may have missed the new details that seem to be emerging about Latin Week. You can read some of the details in Vogue’s earlier post regarding DWTS Week 7, and you can also see the video of Henry discussing what he knows of Latin week here —> Henry talks Latin Week. It’s a short video – you can watch it for yourself and see what you make of it.

I’m posting this up here at the top to try to involve more people in the discussion (no trolling, though, kiddies). As I understand it, the high scoring couple is immune from elimination, right off the bat. Then, the second highest scoring couple gets first choice of who they want to dance against in a “challenge”. According to Derek’s blog, it seems this happens on Tuesday – but I’m not really sure how they’re going to work this. They have 7 couples doing one dance each in two hours?? That’s a whole bunch of free time for filler – as long as that filler is more dancing I guess I’m okay with that – but the results show could be a nightmare.

Anyway, the couples will be dancing either Cha Cha, Jive or Rumba. Not sure how it’s determined who does what, plus certain couples have already done some or all of these dances.

Derek Hough’s Blog on DWTS Weeks 6 and 7, DWTS Season 16

Derek did a shorter than normal blog this week because he’s exhausted and doesn’t know where he is, apparently. Here’s an excerpt from TV Guide:

I am exhausted! I have no idea what time it is or where I am. I’ve been following Kellie on tour this week and I’m just wiped. We’ve been traveling for 10 hours as of now and I think we’re in Illinois or Ohio. I really have no clue! We don’t get back to L.A. until Sunday, so we have one more day of this. I traveled with her the second week, but this is way worse because she’s got three shows in a row.

We lucked out with the samba this week since we just did it in the team dance. It’s s a physical dance and she’s handling it really well. I don’t want to try anything too crazy either this week since it’s so hectic for us. Like with our quickstep, I’m focusing on the quality. I loved how that turned out. It was a pretty simple dance and Kellie nailed it. There were no tricks or gimmicks. It was just a dance, you know? I think that’s so hard to do right now on the show. We’re always trying to do the next big, new thing to keep it fresh and interesting, which I understand, but you also can’t beat just a really good dance. It reminded me of early Dancing with the Stars when literally each week was just the dance itself — no themes or anything. I just wanted the quality to come through and I think it did. Neither of us was expecting the 10 from Len, but it felt awesome to get it!

I have absolutely no idea what’s going in the dance-off next week. All I know is the top couple will be automatically safe, and the other six will have to be in the dance-off. There are three dance styles: the cha-cha, jive and rumba. We won’t know until the results night which dance we’d have to do. I honestly haven’t thought about that at all. I’m just concerned with the samba right now and making that as good as possible. The good thing is we’ve done all three of those styles, so hopefully that’ll give us an edge if we’re in the dance-off.

DWTS Season 16, Week 6 – Dancing by the Numbers

Such a weird night. First, they yank out the tens for one of Zendaya’s worst dances….it’s almost like they knew that Team Paso was gonna suck kinda hard. Then, Carrie Ann refuses to give up a 10 to Kellie and Derek, claiming that there was space between them, yet totally failing to note Zendaya’s again bad legs. They then totally hose Andy (and Len continues to be excessively mean to him), while being kind to Victor, who had a worse dance than Andy’s.

Weirdest of all – on paper, Team Paso should have had that dance in the bag. So, did they get over confident? Think they could skate by on bare chests (didn’t the same pros fail at that last season as well?)?? What?? I guess this just goes to show that if you are the weaker team and you have to be MORE creative in order to get past your weak dancers, you just DO.

It will be really funny when the team dance that sucked eggs (and looked like the poor man’s version of Derek/Brooke’s team paso at the end) wins the encore. LOL. Yeeeaaah.

Anyway, how did our dancers do??

So…Victor is in deep doo doo. It will take a bit of a miracle to save him at this point. What does he need to get to be safe? Victor needs ONE of the following things to happen:

- Victor needs 8,000 more votes per million votes cast than Andy, OR;

- Victor needs 13,300 more votes per million votes cast than Jacoby, OR;

- Victor needs 16,000 more votes per million votes cast than EITHER Ingo or Sean, OR;

- Victor needs 29,200 more votes per million votes cast than Zendaya, OR;

- Victor needs 32,000 more votes per million votes cast than Aly, OR;

- Victor needs 37,200 more votes per million votes cast than Kellie.

Frankly, I don’t believe Victor gets any of those margins. His best bet is Andy and Andy was low scorer last week but was NOT in the bottom two. Victor, on the other hand, had two people below him in terms of score, but was still in the bottom two. Not looking good for Victor. At all.

But let’s say that Victor manages to pass someone. Andy is next in line in terms of judges score. What does Andy need to have happen in order to be safe? He needs ONE of the following:

- Andy needs for Victor to NOT get 8,000 more votes per million votes cast than him, OR;

- Andy needs 5,350 more votes per million votes cast than Jacoby, OR;

- Andy needs 8,000 more votes per million votes cast than EITHER Ingo or Sean, OR;

- Andy needs 21,300 more votes per million votes cast than Zendaya, OR;

- Andy needs 24,000 more votes per million votes cast than Aly, OR;

- Andy needs 29,200 more votes per million votes cast than Kellie.

Now, I don’t think Victor is getting the 8k he needs…and I would be willing to bet that Andy is getting 8k more than Ingo. I just think that Ingo has worn out his welcome. But he was put in jeopardy last week and sometimes a guy gets a bounce after that happens. Will Ingo?? I dunno. My gut is saying no. I think, based largely on his bromance with Tristan and how funny he was about that, Sean is likely safe this week. I think it will come down to Victor, Ingo and Andy.

What does Ingo (or Sean) need to have happen in order to be safe?? Ingo (or Sean) needs ONE of the following things to happen:

- Ingo needs for Victor to not get the 16,000 more votes per million votes cast than him, OR;

- Ingo needs for Andy to not get the 8,000 more votes per million votes cast than him, OR;

- Ingo needs for Jacoby to NOT get the 2,700 more votes per million votes cast than him, OR;

- Ingo needs to get ONE more vote per million votes cast than Sean, OR;

- Ingo needs 13,300 more votes per million votes cast than Zendaya, OR;

- Ingo needs 16,000 more votes per million votes cast than Aly, OR;

- Ingo needs 21,300 more votes per million votes cast than Kellie.

Okay, so based on all of the above, I think the following happens:

- Ingo and Sean aren’t touching Jacoby and he’s safe, easily getting 2,700 more votes per million votes cast than each of them;

- Andy gets 8k more than Ingo and Victor can’t catch him and is, therefore, safe;

- Ingo is getting beat by Sean, Jacoby and Andy, but there is no way that Victor is getting 16k more votes per million votes cast….

- Therefore, Victor goes home.

Seems like a simple math problem this week, but I could be wrong. I was starting to wonder if perhaps Zendaya wasn’t getting the votes, as badly as they overscored her Cha Cha, but I’m also wondering if they put her just far enough down to be safe while rallying her fans to vote like the little maniacs they are.

Doesn’t matter, IMO. I think it will either be Victor and Ingo or Victor and Andy in the bottom two and Victor will go home.

I’m saying it will be Victor and Ingo in the bottom two and Victor goes home.

Dancing with the Stars Season 16, Week 6 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

So, this week’s gimmick is twitter voting for your favorite team dance – winner gets the encore. Jesus, will it ever end?? Listen up, DWTS, I’m on strike and I’m not participating in your stupid crap any more. Also, regarding last weeks pimping of pros not on this season?? The ratings:

Week 2 – 14.47 million viewers/2.4 in the demo
Week 3 – 13.91 million viewers/2.2 in the demo
Week 4 – 13.15 Million viewers/2.1 in the demo (BBall Championships)
Week 5 – 13.4 Million viewers/2.2 in the demo

Yep, still a downward trend over all. Don’t get me wrong – still great ratings relative to TV in general. DWTS is still a top 10 show and sneaks into the Top 5 at times. But whatever they’re going for -it ain’t working. Except to piss people off. And ensuring that Zendaya gets plenty of face time.

DWTS Season 16, Weeks 4 and 5 – The Cheesecake Awards, SUPERSIZED!!

Well, it case you hadn’t figured it out, Courtney and I got overwhelmed last week and didn’t get the cheesecake baked before the next performance show. So this week you get a supersized version – twice as b#@chy and twice as long. Well, maybe not twice as long…there aren’t that many things funny about this show any more.

Week 4

The “YO! I said Shut UP!” Award: Carrie Ann Inaba whose mic wasn’t working when she was trying to critique Sean’s dancing

Heidi: I think someone’s trying to tell her something. Either Sean has magic powers or it’s not nice to diss the “family”. Or the production muppets fail again. Take your pick.

Courtney: I think they should dream up some sort of communication obstacle for her each week, just so we don’t have to listen to her self-righteous blathering. Maybe one week, she’ll have to phrase all of her critiques in pig Latin; the next week, tell her she can’t use any verbs; the following week, she will only be allowed to use hand gestures. Then I’d actually look forward to her critiques – for the pure comedy they would bring

Heidi: Hey! That’s totally not what I meant! You people with dirty minds. Anyway, I’m not so sure the “I’m a maniac” method works, particularly on guys like Victor. Really, screaming at the top of your lungs?? You can see her yelling through out the entire dance!

Courtney: Poor Lindsay – she’s just terribly, terribly green when it comes to being a pro. I highly doubt that if your celeb is messing up, yelling at him at progressively louder volumes is going to help. And really, if he’s screwing up that bad in the first place – you probably haven’t done your job as a pro and gotten him rehearsed enough. It’s times like these where I think to myself, “Would it have KILLED you guys to just put her in the troupe for a season or two?” Read more..

Derek Hough Blogs about the Team Dance, His Partnership with Kellie, and Choreographing for World Champion Ice Dancers

This blog made me a bit worried for Team Samba initially, because it sounded like Derek was NOT taking the lead and that they couldn’t come to an agreement (in addition to some apparent tinkering from TPTB). We’ll see – usually when I get worried it turns out to be for nothing….but the other pros on his team don’t exactly have a stellar record for team dances. Just sayin’. The rest of his blog? I get tired just reading them, frankly. Every week it’s a new project for this guy. Here are a few excerpts from TV Guide:

This week is another crazy, jam-packed one for us. We have our regular dance and the team dance, and I’m not going to lie — the team dance is in shambles right now. We’re not in good shape. We had rehearsal Tuesday after the show and we didn’t come out of it with a team dance. We have the samba, and Aly and Mark, Sean and Peta, and Andy and Sharna are on our team. (Yes, Team Pickler Dick is happening!) Basically the pros failed to commit to one theme. We had to conceptualize and we didn’t like any of them. We have a few ideas for entrances, but then we were told that we can’t do them! So that worked out well!

I feel bad because it was almost like a waste of rehearsal time and we only have one more together on Friday, so hopefully we’ll come up with something then. I’ve won every team dance I’ve been part of and when I looked back at them, the songs lent themselves to more dynamic dances. The routines were also a little longer as a group. We used to have 30 seconds together and now we have 19 seconds. I don’t know why they did that. It just seems so short as a group that I felt like we didn’t have a chance to do anything. In the past, we mapped out the whole routine in the first rehearsal, but this one, it was weird. We were always like, “I don’t know.” But we’ll make it happen!

I’m glad you enjoy my Kellie impression! I can do more. She cracks me up when she says that: “I’m not mad at you, but I’m mad at your ways.” I just want to be clear that I never get frustrated at her, or any of my partners for that matter. The frustration always comes from myself. It’s like a child. A baby wants to tell his mother that he’s hungry, but he can’t speak, so he cries. Then it’s a guessing game with the mom. Does he need his diaper changed? Does he need to be burped? Oh, he’s hungry. It’s the same way here. If I can’t find a way to help her make it click, the frustrating part is me not being able to find the analogy to help her say, “I got it!” It’s never with my partners. I know they’re trying their best and working hard. It’s just when I can’t find a way to help them, the frustration manifests as, “Ugh, just do it.” It’s easy when everything’s going smoothly. When you’re confident in the way you can relay a message, then you do it in a very calm way. But Kellie understood that I wasn’t mad at her. We really just have a blast. She’s truly wonderful.

This week, I also started working on a very special routine that’s not for the show. I’m choreographing a number for our world champion ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White to perform at the Olympics next year. They graciously asked me to do it and how could I say no? It’s truly an honor and they’re amazing. They won silver in Vancouver, are five-time U.S. champions and two-time world champions. If you’re not familiar with them, I highly recommend you check out some of their routines. They actually taught me a new move that I might have to do on the show. It’s a trick and Kellie would be able to do it. Maybe you’ll see it in a few weeks!

DWTS Season 16, Week 5 – Who Got the Boot? (SPOILERS)

Fantastic opening number by Mark and Derek!! Very different…and pretty weird. Courtney and I think Emmy nomination. Provided that the outside choreographer (Stacey Tookey this time) doesn’t steal it again.

Did Selena think she was dancing?? Just asking. Tom pimped Sean and Catherine’s wedding…but it was a set up for a joke so I forgive him. I have to say, I was getting lots of chuckles from Sean tonight. I’m starting to appreciate his sense of humor. And he likes Tristan so he can’t be all bad. Val also gets points for funnies. More on that in the Cheese I’m sure.

I was starting to regret not going with my gut when Ingo was put in jeopardy, right?? Anyway, Victor and DL were the bottom two and DL’s time finally ran out.

How did we all do??

Heidi: I was hoping for DL but figured it would be either Andy or Victor. My gut was telling me Ingo and Victor in the bottom 2. So close…

Courtney: Court said Victor was toast, with DL second from the bottom.

Vogue: Said Victor and DL in the bottom two, with Victor going home.

Winner? The whole audience…and me and Court were both pretty close. Vogue was too, really. I need to start listening to my gut more and not waffle – I said that I felt like Andy was pulling himself out of jeopardy. So happy to be right on that one!!

DWTS Season 16, Week 5 – Dancing by the Numbers

Okay, that turned out somewhat better than expected. For all the pimping of Maks, he ended up being a non-event – for me, anyway. It’s rather odd, actually. I guess when you have nothing better to pimp, pimp one of the pro dancers who’s known for being a “bad boy” who’s not on this season. Ummmm…okay. I guess TPTB are just pandering to one group or another all the damn time. For those extremist Maks fans who read this site just so they can complain about us (yeah, it makes no sense to me either), the ratings were up LAST week, so if they are up again this week? Get over yourselves…it’s a trend, not an aberration. Reminds me of the Twihards who claimed they were tanking the MTV Awards this year by not watching…and they were actually UP significantly. Don’t jack with numbers, man.

Mah goodness, my favorites of the night were Jacoby and Kellie – fantastic. Loved it. Zendaya is being soured for me by the pimping…and seriously? The bent legs, the instability coming out of the turns…if this girl were dancing with Derek she’d be getting hosed for being a ringer. And we’d be getting trolls out the wazoo. But since she’s dancing with Val she essentially has rainbows shooting out her ass. The girl is a good dancer, yes. And I like her as a person. But I have to tell you, I’m seeing a LOT of people in the comments here and on twitter who are getting REALLY good at predicting exactly what will happen. Up for 2 weeks, down for two weeks…to come roaring back to get two tens. Hello – we’ve seen this storyboarding before. I expect someone else will get a perfect 30 next week – either Aly or Kellie, most likely. Because we have to keep it a horse race at all costs, so it can’t be Zendaya. And, as predicted, Zendaya and Val get the encore.

In the “credit where credit is due” department – Kick ass opening dance, Lacey Schwimmer!! Excellent. Loved it. Girlfriend has been honing her group choreo skills over there in Vegas and it’s paid off. MUCH better job than Sharna did last week on the women’s number, although Lacey has the benefit of time and no celeb partner. And Sharna is doing great with Andy.

Dancing with the Stars Season 16, Week 5 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

Welcome to DWTS! Our gimmick for the week is having each couple dance side by side with a pro couple. NO! We can’t just have dancing, we have to keep throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks!! We’re counting on you being too blind to our machinations, silly people!

Ahem. Anyway, this is my stab at getting the pro couples who are dancing with each celeb couple – if you see something wrong, or if you know something I don’t, please let me know in the comments. I’ve been so busy this week that I’ve had a hard time keeping up.

I tried to put these in a logical order, also making sure that the same pro doesn’t have two dances in a row.

ETA: Off by one on DL and Cheryl, which made me revise my own order.

ETA2: Court here, doing a drive-by on Heidi’s behalf, since she is currently traveling. THRILLED TO BITS to hear Andy & Sharna got the pimp spot!!! Disclaimer: if a couple doesn’t have a dance order by their name, they are in no particular order. Too busy and too discombobulated to take any guesses about the remainder of the running order

ETA3: Henry confirms that Kellie & Derek are up 6th. For those who have asked, no, I do not know for sure whether DWTS will get preempted by the coverage of the Boston Marthon explosion. Judging from the tweets I’m seeing from various cast members, it looks at this moment like the show is going to go on as planned. If for some reason it doesn’t, they WILL tape it and air it at some other time – according to our source, it’s “too expensive” to go to the trouble of setting everything up again. Will let you guys know if we hear anything…prayers and positive energy to everyone in Boston
