Looks like October 19 is the first, hopefully not the last, time they will be performing this season!! Hooray!! According to ET via AOL (I’ve not seen it anywhere else yet):
Derek Hough is returning to the ballroom! On Wednesday, ABC announced that the 35-year-old Dancing With the Stars judge will perform during the Oct. 19 episode, marking the first time he’s done so since 2017.
The dancer will perform with his girlfriend — who’s also a former DWTS pro — Hayley Erbert. Hough, who’s currently serving as a DWTS judge, previously competed as a pro for 17 seasons, most recently in 2016. He won the mirrorball a total of six times, the most of any pro.

“It’s all about evolution,” he told reporters Wednesday during Day 2 of ABC’s virtual fall press day. “Any show like this that has been on for many, many seasons needs to continue to evolve. So I think changing that host is all about evolution. It was all about making the show feel fresh, making it feel new and make it reach out to a new audience — as well as the audience that’s been there for years.”
While viewers have lamented the absence of Bergeron and Andrews, Llinares believes switching from a two-host format to one has been “working brilliantly.”
“I think it’s really refreshed the pace of the show. It’s taken it to a new place, in terms of moving fast and feeling different. I think that there’s a real danger when a show has been on for a long time that the audience almost gets bored of the rhythm of it. It doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with it, just that it gets a little boring,” he said. “I think it’s changed the rhythm of the show in a really exciting way. I think Tyra is doing an amazing, amazing job. It’s been wonderful having her energy in the ballroom and her expertise as a host in the ballroom. She’s brought a new life to everything.”
If he had left it at the first paragraph, I might have believed him. but then he goes on and on. And not just the above…he carries on even after saying “she brought new life to everything”.
He doubled down on parting ways with Bergeron and Andrews, reiterating that it’s about keeping the show “relevant.”
“When a show’s been on for this many seasons, it’s very easy to stay in a place where it doesn’t feel like there’s anything wrong but does the show feel fresh, exciting and new? It’s really tough… We’ve always been successful on all those shows where we continue to evolve and continue to move things on. That’s something we’ve been doing right across the board with this show,” Llinares explained. “The host is part of it, bringing Derek in is part of it, but also throughout the fabric of everything on the show — the set has been updated, it feels more current and the way we’re filming the packages… all of those things take the show into a place where it feels more current. We wanted to make the show feel relevant, but still hold on to the heart of the show.”
There’s this old saying “Me thinks he doth protest too much”….meaning, if you’d shut the fuck up about it we might have believed you. But the constant blathering on makes you sound…guilty. Apologies to Shakespear fans, I know the actual line is: “The lady doth protest too much, methinks”
He also claims he’s been talking to Derek “for months” and the original plan was to have the original three judges plus Derek. Um, can you imagine four judges and 15 couples AND Tyrant?? Yeah, me neither.

Disney night…another night that is also known as Tyrant (tm Court) Night. Just another cold open starring Tyra because this show is ALL ABOUT HER.
The show will begin with a cold open of host Tyra Banks and celebrities taking the viewing audience into their favorite classic Disney films. Episodes can be viewed the next day on demand and on Hulu.
Like everyone in the universe predicted, including Derek who tried to get the reporters to take bets, Carole is dancing to something from Lion King. Really, producers, at this point you’re just pathetic and sad. Derek was also correct when he said, “I feel like it’s all been done.” Yep, few surprises here. “Up” and “Newsies” might both be new. They also have the obligatory new Disney film they need to pimp – Nelly got stuck with that one.
AJ & Cheryl – Quickstep (âPrince Aliâ from âAladdinâ)
Kaitlyn & Artem – Foxtrot (âHow Far Iâll Goâ from âMoanaâ)
Monica & Val – Waltz (âPart of Your Worldâ from âThe Little Mermaidâ)
Vernon & Peta – Quickstep (âBe Our Guestâ from âBeauty and the Beastâ)
Anne & Keo – Quickstep (âZero to Heroâ from âHerculesâ)
Justina & Sasha – Charleston (âSupercalifragilisticexpialidociousâ from âMary Poppinsâ)
Jeannie & Brandon – Viennese Waltz (âMarried Lifeâ from âUpâ)
Skai & Alan – Jive (âAlmost Thereâ from âThe Princess and the Frogâ)
Johnny & Britt -Rumba (âReflectionâ from âMulanâ)
Jesse & Sharna – Jive (âKing of New Yorkâ from âNewsiesâ)
Nelly & Daniella- Foxtrot (âItâs Alrightâ from âSoulâ)
Nev & Jenna – Argentine Tango (âAngelicaâ from âPirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tidesâ)
Chrishell & Gleb – Waltz (âA Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makesâ from âCinderellaâ)
Carole & Pasha – Samba (âCircle of Lifeâ from âThe Lion Kingâ)
In the category of “who danced it better”, here are some examples of what’s been already done on this show using many of these same songs.
“A Whole New World” has been danced to a million times, but I couldn’t find Prince Ali.
I almost feel bad for Justina and Sasha. They have to live up to Charlie and Sharna, and this dance is fantastic – broken umbrella and all.
Simone and Sasha dances a lovely contemporary to “How Far I’ll Go”…
I may update with more later…YouTube is taking forever to load and it’s not my connection, soooo….

Sort of cross posted from PureDerekHough…excerpt is a bit different since this is a DWTS site.
This is an illuminating article from TV Line with what Derek had to say after last night’s show (excerpt below). He also says he plans to dance later in the season.
Hough told TV Insider and a small group of reporters after the show that itâs more than a bit challenging when he sees the clock ticking away with only a few seconds left and he needs to render his decision. âCarrie Ann [Inaba] was like, âLet me tell you why [Iâm choosing who Iâm choosing] and Brunoâs like, âLet me tell you whyâŚââ Hough notes with a good-natured chuckle. âThen, it was, âDerek you have to give us an answer!ââ
Fortunately, Hough, who first appeared on the show as a pro dancer in Season 5, knows the drill. âHey, itâs my job,â he says. âI canât complain.â Plus, he reveals, to his understanding, he wonât be the one called upon to be a potential tie-breaker each week. âItâll trade off,â he muses, adding wryly, âbut I want to thank everyone for leaving it up to me!â
—-
âIt really was the progress that [Carole] had made,â says the professional dancer of choosing the Big Cat Rescue owner, who caught himself being lost in the âbeauty and graceâ of Baskinâs Viennese Waltz with partner Pasha Pashkov. âI had to look at it from that perspective.â
About his development deal:
âThere are already a few projects that are coming up,â he teases. âI felt like it was a right fit with ABC and Disney for things we have in mind.â
A bit more about this season of DWTS:
Houghâs in no rush for couples to leave the competition, but he is hoping there will soon be more air time for him to go into detailed critiques that will ideally help couples deliver more entertaining routines.
âThere are definitely moments where Iâd love to say, âChoreographically, try this approach,ââ Hough says. âSometimes, that will be said off-screen [but] I genuinely want to help people improve.â

Okay, so tonight I’m going to attempt to do what I did last season and that is combine the live blog with Dancing by the Numbers. TRY. đ It ain’t easy, that’s for sure, and I’m rusty….but I think I can pull it off thanks to my handy spreadsheet. It will be tough with 15 couples, but let’s give it a shot!!
T-minus 30 minutes…
A note about the numbers…to calculate more accurate numbers, I started with everyone getting the same score this week as they got last week in order to get the total number of points closer to reality. As the show goes along, I will input the correct score which likely won’t change the overall points by overly much. Using this method, right now, only 3,800 votes per million votes cast separate Carole and Charles. Â Only 7,700 votes separate Carole and Chrishell…prior to dancing. Â Both numbers can and will change, but if it’s very similar then you can easily see how Carole could stay over someone like Chrishell who isn’t as well known. What would help is if Chrishell does a great dance 2nd or 3rd, while Carole sucks and goes last. Â We’ll soon find out!
The celebs are funny…but who told Tyra she is? Â đ Â I see we have another week of Tyra’s catwalk where she’s even more important than the judges. Read more..

Cross posting this from PureDerekHough, since Derek is back on DWTS…and possibly will be beyond this season as well…
Well, sounds to me like Derek has fully rejoined the ABC family. Derek previously had a first look deal with Universal which apparently didn’t work out very well since we haven’s seen any content (except maybe Holidays with the Houghs??) produced by him in the year since he signed it. Of course, I’m assuming that you don’t have these kinds of deals with more than one company. Seems like a good assumption. Also not sure what the difference is between a “first look” and an “overall” deal. The first is in the name – perhaps the second is more solid?? No idea. Anyway, good for him and I hope we see something from him SOON. Something that includes his face on my TV screen. đ From the ABC Press Release:
Today, ABC Entertainment announced an overall deal with EmmyÂŽ Award winner, six-time Mirrorball champion dancer and âDancing with the Starsâ judge Derek Hough. In this role, Hough will host and develop specials and entertainment programming for the network.
âComing home to ABC and being given the opportunity to develop projects for them that are as much on brand for them as they are for me makes this even that more exciting for me,â said Derek Hough.
âDerek is a creative force not just in the ballroom but also every room he enters,â said Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment. âHe has been part of our ABC family for many years; the energy and dedication he brings to every project is palpable. We value his partnership immensely and look forward to the exciting and imaginative projects to come.â
News of his deal comes just one week after the season 29 debut of âDancing With the Stars,â and just over a year after Hough signed a first-look deal with Universal Television. At the time, Hough was a judge on âWorld of Dance,â but sources say he is no longer under that pact.

Week 2, coming up. Note that it’s apparently airing on Tuesday this week. Lots of disturbing things in the press release, not the least of which is this gem:
The show will begin with a comedic cold open featuring host Tyra Banks and the origins of her âsmizeâ as she teaches the celebrities how to use it through the competition.
The only way this is acceptable is if the include Derek because he seems to make everything fun. đ Next, a little reminder in how the voting is going to work:
Live votes (via abc.com, the ABC app and SMS/text) will occur each week only during the live broadcast in the EDT/CDT time zones (but fans in all U.S. time zones may vote within that window). Moving forward with each subsequent episode, the live vote combined with the judgesâ scores will be revealed during the broadcast.
And, finally, who’s dancing what…in the order I had them in last week, which was often wrong. Not that it matters to anyone other than the person dancing last. Whole lotta cha cha and a whole lotta foxtrot.Love that they included a couple old songs that are probably a bit more in line with those dance styles. Justina goes from up tempo to the dreaded rumba. I’ll be curious to see how she does on that one after her standout performance last week. Carole AGAIN gets a song with a cat in the title. :::rolls eyes::: Neither clever nor funny, producers.
AJ & Cheryl – Foxtrot (âAinât That a Kick in the Headâ by Dean Martin)
Kaitlyn & Artem – Foxtrot (âI Hope You Danceâ by Lee Ann Womack)
Monica & Val – Jive (“Shake it off” by Taylor Swift)
Vernon & Peta – Foxtrot (âWe Found Love!â by Rihanna and Calvin Harris)
Anne & Keo – Foxtrot (âCounting Starsâ by One Republic)
Justina & Sasha – Rumba (âWhen You Believeâ by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey)
Jeannie & Brandon – Cha Cha (âRosesâ by SAINt JHN)
Skai & Alan – Samba to (âMiss Independentâ by Neyo)
Johnny & Britt -Tango (âPoker Faceâ by Lady Gaga)
Jesse & Sharna – Foxtrot (âDreamsâ by Fleetwood Mac)
Nelly & Daniella- Cha Cha (âLetâs Groveâ by Earth, Wind & Fire)
Nev & Jenna – Cha Cha (âDynamiteâ by BTS)
Charles & Emma – Cha Cha (âNever. Too Muchâ by Luther Vandross)
Chrishell & Gleb – Rumba (âThis is Meâ by Keala Settle & âThe Greatest Showmanâ ensemble)
Carole & Pasha – Viennese Waltz (âWhatâs New Pussycatâ by Tom Jones)
This week I had a bit of extra time, so I searched Youtube for some of the songs being used this week to see how often they’ve been used. Totally not scientific because it requires the song to be mentioned in the description of the video.
So, I knew that Poker Face had been used before on DWTS, but I had no idea that nearly EVERYONE has danced to it. Nick and Peta. Cheryl and Gilles. Andy and Sharna. I just remembered Derek and Anna’s pro dance. Seriously, search “DWTS Poker Face” on youtube. Then I googled on Derek and Anna’s names because they didn’t come up with the rest…and that’s because their Paso was to Bad Romance. đ Geez…I knew it was Lady Gaga but sue me if I remember the dance and not the correct song. The point is…Lady Gaga loves this show. She even tweeted Kaitlyn’s dance last week saying she loved it. Derek and Anna are below cuz it’s my favorite. đ
Ain’t that a Kick in the Head was also used before…by Julianne and Helio. Just beautiful. It was also used on the DWTS tour, but I didn’t find where any other couples danced to it. Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, just means it wasn’t tagged in the video.
Derek and Amy danced to Counting Stars…and I didn’t find any others.
I knew also that Shake it Off had been used before…and sure enough, Bethany and Derek used it week one. What, are they recycling only songs that Derek used? đ The answer is no: I just found that Sasha and Tonya danced to When You Believe. đ
That’s all for this week. I didn’t have any luck with several of them, so I decided that was enough for tonight.

Well, here we are once again. Lots of things to be curious about tonight. What will it be like without an audience?? Will Judge Derek be very similar to the Judge Derek we see on World of Dance – hope so, that dude is entertaining and KIND. But truthful. Is Tyra going to be a total camera and microphone hog or just a moderate one?? Are there so many couples that it will be hard to focus?? And which pros will be able to survive without backing dancers and huge sets?? đ
I, for one, am going to blog like I normally do for DWTS – stream of consciousness, and not a blow by blow of every moment and score. I do that on WoD, but that show is only an hour. Anyway, t-minus 20 minutes!!
So I just posted an interview with Derek on PureDerekHough and he says/implies that he will be back on World of Dance, provided it’s picked up for season 5. Which it probably will be because it had decent ratings, for a summer show. So, either his NBC contract allows him to be on other networks and DWTS is desperate, or he is between contracts (although most are five years) and DWTS used that as an excuse. Who knows?
Here we go…and first shot is Tyra, of course. But then we get all the pros. Love Sharna’s hair so much better.
OG Pro Cheryl the first into the ballroom. I have to say, I like this bit with all the pros dancing alone.
That is a great dress on Tyra and I love the look of the ballroom, honestly. All the celebs looking great. Nice costuming…except Carole Baskin. WTF?
Confession…I got a little teary during the theme song. It’s been a shit year. Read more..

Well thank god for the ABC press release which has, in the past couple years, just posted what everyone is dancing to and the style. I swear they just got tired of us ferreting out the information and decided to spoil it themselves. đ
So, it’s clear that the producers are still picking the music. I wonder if they’re designing all the costumes and have a heavy hand in the choreo like they apparently did last season. The pros actually used to do it ALL. And they did it better.
Who got screwed? Hmmm….anyone doing anything other than Cha Cha or Foxtrot, IMO. Paso on week 1?? This is what happens when you worry more about the music than the dance style…and kids still won’t watch the show. Eye of the Tiger? Ugh. Some of them I just don’t get and I don’t think I want to.
Live voting only during the show….let’s just say that I like Derek having that power better than Len, but the other two jokers are still untrustworthy. Still sucks though. The pimp spot is no longer the pimp spot…at least not for the first few weeks until people pick their favorites. If you are not well known and you go last in the first two weeks, you might be in trouble because people won’t have time to vote for you.
I’ve put them in the order that I think they might actually dance, below. I’ve not added the pro dancer simply because I don’t care enough to search out the information. đ I’ll add them later. Kaitlyn is tough – she could be either first (my bet), the top of the second hour, in the last 3-4 dancers…but not last. I think they’ve always put Carole in the last spot in all the promos, so she’ll get the last spot on show night. I think AJ will be right there with her. They need good stuff at the top of the hour, which is why I have Johnny, Skai and Jesse/Nelly all huddled in there. After that, your guess is as good as mine. đ When we find out the order, I’ll try to update. Don’t know if we will this season – I don’t think George will be in the ballroom.
ETA: So, Cheryl says she’s dancing first and google says her rumored partner is AJ McLean. Not too surprising. I had him second to last, but if they want someone like Carole last and Johnny or Jesse second to last, that works too! Start with a bang?
AJ McLean – Jive (âBlinding Lightsâ by The Weeknd) Dancing 1st
Kaitlyn Bristowe – Cha Cha (âStupid Loveâ by Lady Gaga)
Monica Aldama – Foxtrot (âMy Wishâ by Rascal Flatts)
Vernon Davis – Foxtrot (âAll of Meâ by John Legend)
Anne Heche – Cha Cha (âDonât Start Nowâ by Dua Lipa)
Justina Machado – Cha Cha (âRespectâ by Aretha Franklin)
Jeannie Mai – Salsa (âTell It to My Heartâ by Taylor Dayne)
Skai Jackson – Tango (âSuper Bassâ by Nicki Minaj)
Johnny Weir – Cha Cha (âButtonsâ by The Pussycat Dolls)
——2 hour mark—–
Jesse Metcalfe – Quickstep (âPart Time Loveâ by Stevie Wonder)
Nelly – Salsa (âRide Wit Meâ by Nelly)
Nev Schulman – Foxtrot (âThe Way You Look Tonightâ by Frank Sinatra)
Charles Oakley – Salsa (âIn Da Clubâ by 50 Cent)
Chrishell Stause – Tango (âRaise Your Glassâ by P!nk)
Carole Baskin – Paso (âEye of the Tigerâ by Survivor)
ETA Voting Info from the DWTS twitter account. Looked for this on abc.com yesterday and it’s not there, as far as I can tell.
Q: How can I make sure my vote gets in?
A: Vote via text (text your fav celeb dancer to 21523) or on https://t.co/N6W3ZGTqa5 ????
