DWTS Season 17, The Finale (Week 11) – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

Well, a little birdie tells us that the producers put out a call to the crew for more paparazzi impersonators. Seems they are reworking the season opener, only it’s going to be bigger. :-) That’s what Court hears, anyway. :-)

It will be interesting seeing who goes last. They had their big ringer go last last season and we know how that worked out. Interesting. :-) Any bets? I’m going with Amber opening and Corbin closing…or vice versa. I may change my mind in 10 minutes. I can’t seem to stick to one opinion this season. :-)

Dancing with the Stars Season 17, Week 10 – Dancing by the Numbers

Well. As I said last week, if you score normally, and don’t make the margin between the upper tier of dancers super tiny, then you stop having “shocking” eliminations. It only took them ten weeks to figure it out. Or maybe Leah had just served her purpose of getting more famous people in the audience.  Either way, she was eliminated and it didn’t take much for that to happen. Here are the judges scores for both dances – those in grey are my predictions…well, my second set of predictions. :-) I wasn’t sure which way they were going to go with. Glad they selected option number 2. :-)

Table 1

These scores led to the following vote requirements.

Table 2

Note that in week 9, the margin between Leah and Liz was less than 7k votes. This week, when they aren’t over inflating everyone’s score trying to get rid of Bill, Leah needed well more than 17k votes per million votes cast to get to Jack, Amber or Corbin. Here’s what caused her to be eliminated – all of the following happened: Read more..

DWTS Season 17, Week 10 – The Semi Finals!! – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show!! (SPOILERS)

I’m very interested to see which Maks we get tonight. I have a feeling he really wants to do a good job. The question is…does he have it in him to be fair and constructive? Or will the wacko juice from the judges on either side of him infect his brain?? :-)  Right now, I have some confidence.  Check back here every few minutes to see if I lose it completely. ;-)

First dance down and Leah finally gets called out. Not only was that dance simple as hell (more simple than anything Amber does while injured) but she stumbled more than once.

I’m liking Maks so far as a judge…but we’re only one dance in. :-)  Not entirely sure that being called a “technician” is particularly flattering in this context though.

Almost forgot – that opening dance was FANTASTIC!! Who was responsible for that? It looked like a Mandy Moore – particularly with Derek out in front for half of it.

Discuss. :-D

SPOILERS!! SPOILERS!!

Bill and Leah were in jeopardy and Leah FINALLY goes home.

In other news, Maks was rather hilarious as a judge. Love that they put him next to Bruno – that added a whole other level of amusement. :-)

DWTS Exec Producer Conrad Green Talks to Entertainment Weekly on New Format

And it sounds very much like he’s been reading PureDWTS again. :-) Check it, from EW.com (click the link to read the whole thing):

How clued-in are the judges to the popular vote?
The judges have never known those figures. They’ve never seen a single vote. There’s two voting documents — one comes from the phone company and one comes from ABC.com, which includes the Facebook votes. We get those numbers and put them into a grid and determine the results from the control room, on the spot. It’s only me and [a representative of ABC's] Broadcast & Standards who see them. No one, even the upper execs on the show, ever see that document. And so while the judges might have the same opinion that anyone else has as to how popular certain couples are — they don’t know.

In practice, it’s kind of difficult for the judges because no matter what they do, they seem to get lambasted. Look, don’t get me wrong, all of us as viewers have our own opinion about scores that are given. Sometimes you go, “Really?” But then again, I’m not a dancer. They are from dance and they know this. And I kind of think you’re never gonna be able to give a score that everyone can agree on. You can tell that just by reading the comments below the line. People are furious that it was either too high or too low.

And the judging on this show is very difficult — we’re the only show where they have to hold up a number and be accountable for it. You could be fake, or damning, or warm — but you don’t have to be consistent. Our judges can say what they want. But then they have to hold up a paddle. So sometimes they’ll be trying to say something encouraging — they feel someone’s having a tough time, so they’ll say something quite nice… but then they’ll hold up a 7. And people say “Well why would you do that?” Well, because they don’t want to beat the guy up! The next week, they might give him an 8 but be more critical. It’s really tricky, because you also want to be able to encourage, give notes, plan improvement. And then there’s the question: Do you judge people relative to each other? Do you judge on just, that feels like an 8 to me? Or do you judge it relative to the contestant’s improvement?

I suppose it may always seem to angry viewers like the judges are “in on it” and orchestrating results.
The problem is, you can’t ever convince people that’s not the case because people just choose to believe that. It’s not the case. The whole point of this show — and it obviously is easier when the public votes after the judges instead of the public vote carrying over — but the point of the show is that the public along with the judges are picking the winner. So it’s kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy for us. You want the voters to be involved in that process. This is why, when people say, “Well, the judges’ scores should carry more weight; it’s crazy if someone like Elizabeth goes” — well yeah, I get it. I’d have liked to see Elizabeth in the final, I must admit, because she’s great as a dancer. But then if the public really want other people there, I’m kind of fine with that.

Okay, Conrad – but you never give them hints?? I suppose those three might be smart enough to figure out who’s doing well and who to protect all on their own. But I can’t believe there is NO manipulation going on.

Love the bit of insight on how the Eastern and Central time zone make up most of the voting. Very interesting…

DWTS Season 17, Week 10 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

Two individual dances…but both to the same song. Could be interesting. Derek is the only one I have real confidence in, with his music background. Karina should be fine too, with Corbin’s background. I guess we’ll see tomorrow. :-)

Is this the second week in a row that Cheryl is just bad at math?? I think that should be 3rd and 8th, correct??

Dancing with the Stars Season 17, Week 9 – Dancing by the Numbers

Well, well, well…sometimes I’m right and I don’t want to be. I said way back when at the beginning of the season that both Christina and Liz were possible early eliminees (along with Brant) but once Christina was gone I had hoped that Elizabeth could make it to the end. Afraid not. She seemed like a nice woman but she just wasn’t getting the votes and her time ran out. She and Christina are the Season 17 equivalent to Kristin and Chynna – only both women lasted longer this season, probably due to better dancing on their part.

Once again we are in a situation of having no real idea of how either Bill or Leah (or any of the rest of them) are doing in terms of votes. It’s a mystery. And it will likely continue to be very interesting because I think Derek had it right when he said that the votes occurring the week before makes it more unpredictable.  Like I said before, last season if you make it through a bad week, you’ve made it through period. But this season, if a bunch of people didn’t like your dance this past week and didn’t vote for you, you have NO chance to redeem yourself – they can’t come out this Monday and do a killer dance such that everyone votes for them and be safe. They can get the great scores, but if people stopped voting for them because their dances just weren’t good last week, then it might not matter. What happened week 8? Well, that’s when Liz changed the choreo at the last minute on Val, against his wishes and it resulted in less than stellar dancing. And clearly, she couldn’t afford that.

Let’s take a look at the scores and the votes needed this past week.

Table 1

Table 2

So, Bill took a step back this week in terms of dancing – will it cost him this coming Monday? What about Amber – everyone knows she’s injured, but what if her time is up? And will they continue to desperately overscore Leah to keep her in the game?? Because, really, when you look at the math it becomes obvious that MAYBE if they had kept it real on Leah, that Liz might still be there.  No one can make a claim, for sure, that their couple is getting a ton of votes because EVERYONE except Corbin beat a margin to get past Liz in terms of votes. Which means she likely wasn’t getting any. Here’s what happened that lead to Liz’s elimination. ALL of the following happened: Read more..

DWTS Season 17, Week 9 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show!! (SPOILERS)

I really have no words.  Leah getting 9′s on the first dance I could over look, but that Jive?? This show has gone to hell.

In what universe is she scoring only a point lower than Corbin and higher than Amber.

That’s all I got. Oh, and Kellie looks great. :-)

Discuss.

SPOILER ALERT!!

Okay, so the two in jeopardy were Bill and Liz…and Liz went home.

When are these people going to learn??  Leah’s dances were clearly sub par tonight, but they felt they just HAD to try (again) to get rid of Bill and protect her (Leah) with high scores. Really, her scores were the only ones out of line tonight, IMO. MAYBE, if they had scored her appropriately, she would be gone and Liz would still be there. Kinda hard to tell with all the elevated scores getting thrown around.

JUST WATCH THEM DANCE THEN GIVE THEM SCORES BASED ON THE DANCE. Or at the very least, start scoring them all on the Derek scale of “too much frippery, not enough content.”

Dancing with the Stars Season 17, Week 8 – Dancing by the Numbers

Examples of why immunity may not be a good thing:

  1. Will average fans GET that Amber still needs votes?
  2. After having a solid 3 point lead in the cumulative score, Amber is now tied with Corbin IF they include the dance offs (and marathons) in the cumulative total. They shouldn’t, but…

I think the coming week could be a dangerous one for Amber, but I guess we’ll have to hope that fans are smarter than some on the net clearly believe they are. No names. :-)

I’ve seen quite a few comments about Leah getting propped by the judges – dudes, they fired a shot across her bow the other night by giving her two 8s. That ain’t propped. I think (hope) it was a sign of things to come. I’ve also seen speculation that her scores are meant to justify her place in the finale based on votes. This is a theory that I often toy with and have seen in action. If they were going to do that, though, I don’t think she would have gotten 8s last Monday night at all.  This coming week will be an indication if they’re going to start playing that game. If Bill’s scores suddenly improve? There you go. He may be finale bound. However, another theory I toy with every season is their lulling the audience into a position where an elimination becomes “shocking” – their treatment of Bill Monday night may just qualify for that, as could Amber winning immunity. I guess we have to wait and see, but you heard it here first.  :-)  It worked on me, after all. I had been calling Brant a possible early exit early in the season, but they lulled me out of it.

Anyway, what exactly happened last Monday night? Well, Liz proved that someone is, indeed, voting for her. She was 3 points lower than Brant and covered the spread. They didn’t even put her in danger – that was Jack’s honor. Of course, with the way everything went down with Bill being immediately safe (so immediate that it was on the teleprompter, which means they knew before he danced, I think), I have to believe that no one was voting for Brant. You could argue that such a massive number of people were voting for Bill they just knew – but Liz covering the spread is an interesting little factoid to throw in there to make you wonder. If only one person is beating the spread it’s one thing, but for two of them to do it? Brant wasn’t getting votes, IMO. Liz is someone that I think is in dangerous territory and she better not be only 1 point away from Bill again next week. Could be trouble.  The tables below show where everyone ended up: Read more..

And guess who she wants as a partner. :-) Anyway, lots of talk about Clueless and then they get to DWTS at about the 8 minute mark. Sounds like her campaign was started by someone else as a joke and it just took off.
