Below are more Dancing With The Stars interviews and coverage with Entertainment Tonight, Extra, PopTVDotCom, and Afterbuzz TV. From the Afteruzz TV interviews we learn that Cheryl and Antonio have a Rumba next week. Mark and Sadie have the Jazz (things get crazy in this interview). Be watching Afterbuzz TV as they mat post more interviews soon. Also below is a really good interview with Jonathan and Access Hollywood from this morning. Lots of great coverage today.
We’ve got more interviews to share from Access Hollywood. Also listed below are some new Afterbuzz interviews. Note how Val and Janel have a Fox Trot next week. Emma and Michael won’t disclose their dance, but, Emma hints that it’s “fruity” (wha? lol). Tony and Betsey have a Foxtrot, but, it won’t be conventional. You can view Derek and Bethany’s Afterbuzz interview at Pure Derek Hough. So far, Derek won’t disclose their dance, but, says it will be different. Also, don’t forget….Peta mentioned in a previous interview that she and Tommy have a Salsa next week. As for Sharna and Tavis, they have the Cha Cha. More interviews coming up. Stay tuned.
Well, I have to say that I’m really pleased with the dancing we saw last night. The show as a whole was rather sloppy, but that’s somewhat typical for the first show of the season when it’s jam packed with people. Anyway, I just loved it. Of course, Derek is my favorite, but I can’t really pick another favorite. Love Jonathan, Sadie, Tommy, Alfonso, Randy, Lea….and of course, Bethany.
For those of you new to this blog, this is the post where I figure out how many votes the various couples need in order to stick around. The math is fairly simple: you add up the total number of points handed out over the night, divide that total into each couple’s individual score for their percentage of the judges scores. The viewer votes are handed the same way – the total number of votes is divided into a couples votes for a percentage. The two percentages are then added together and the couple with the lowest combined total goes home.
Let’s take a look at the scores and the percentages:
Now, as much as I love Sadie, I don’t think she is only 2 points back from Alfonso and 2 points ahead of Bethany and Lea. And she’s certainly not that far ahead of Randy. Nope. But she probably has the weakest fanbase on the show of those who can actually dance, so they might be protecting her a tiny bit. Although I don’t think that’s necessary.
Why? Well, while we have some absurdly high scores for week 1, we also have some really low scores for week 1. And sadly, most were deserved. Personally, I enjoyed Betsey WAY more than Lolo – and I would bet the average viewer agrees with me. But Betsey is at the bottom. Here’s what she needs to do to stick around:
She only needs, roughly, 5,400 votes per million votes cast in order to stay over Lolo. Call me crazy, but I think she gets those votes. And Lolo kinda did it to herself with the constant talking. I could certainly be wrong, but she took a dance that was hard to watch and turned it into a whole segment that was hard to watch. Thank god for Tom Bergeron. Yikes. Anyway, I think Betsey gets past Lolo. Good thing, too, because I don’t think she’s going to make it past either Michael or Antonio – Antonio, while somewhat wooden, certainly has his fans. Michael is just adorable and I want him to stay forever. But I feel that way about half the cast right now.
For the sake of argument, let’s say that Betsey is totally safe. What does Lolo have to get in order to also be safe? She needs the following:
She needs roughly 8,100 votes per million votes cast in order to beat either Michael or Antonio and honestly, I would be shocked if she got it. I feel very bad for Keo – I don’t want him to go. She needs 13,450 to get past Tommy and I don’t see that happening either.
So, without belaboring the point, I think Lolo goes home. If it’s not Lolo, it will be Betsey – it’s possible that where I saw charming, many saw trainwreck. If there’s a shocker I will do a post results explanation of what I think happened.
One final point, with all the characters in this cast, there are a couple people who need to watch out. Janel is the big one, IMO. All the hype she and Val have been putting out there and I don’t think she lived up to it. Make no mistake – she’s a decent dancer. But she got off easy – they tagged Lea as the ringer when Janel has more recent experience and got off scott free. This pisses me off…but by the end of the show I had forgotten about her. This leads to dangerous, shocking elim territory in coming weeks. Unfortunately, there are a lot of good dancers that could fall in to this trap – Lea, maybe Sadie and possibly Bethany (although with Derek as a partner, she will stand out whether she wants to or not). I love all three of them, but they are going up against Tommy, Randy, Alfonso, Jonathan and Michael?? These guys are not necessarily better dancers but they command the screen. Even if they are not the best dancers, you grow to LOVE them. So watch out, girls – this is a tough season.
Below is some Good Morning with some Dancing With The Stars coverage from last night. Meryl Davis weighs in…
Also, below is some coverage after the Dancing With The Stars party with PopTVDotCom. Lots of fun stuff here. They love Henry…
ETA: Below is Michael Waltrip talking about his first dance and behind the scenes…
Give it up to Dancing With The Stars Executive Producer Rob Wade! I can’t commend him enough for the cast he’s put together and all the changes and surprises we saw last night!!! It really feels as if he is listening to us (ie: choosing Allison Holker to dance, bringing Sharna Burgess and Gleb Savchenko back, and more). Below is a new interview with The Wrap for where he talks all about it. More at the link for why he chose Julianne Hough as a 4th judge, how there will be more guest judges, and more!
The Wrap: Have you met your expectations on the cast?
Rob Wade: What’s great is we have a real diverse cast. Nineteen seasons in, we’re still able to find people from different backgrounds and different types of celebrity. We have Bethany Mota, a YouTube star. We’ve never had that before. Also, NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip, we’ve never had that before and it really opens the show up to others. We have young. We have old. We have some really good dancers, as well. I’m excited by it.
How much does the craziness of the show’s casting rumors affect your decisions? Do you take a temperature on it?
I wouldn’t say we take a temperature on it, no. We definitely listen to people’s ideas and hear what people have to say. Casting the show goes beyond ‘Is that a good name?’ You have to think of the cast as a family and you need different aspects for the cast. It can’t be one note.
We’re the only show out there at the moment that’s genuinely a family show. You can watch this with your grandchildren, your aunt, your grandfather, your father. There’s something in this show for everyone. So, obviously, not everyone is going to please everyone. If they did, we did something wrong. Everybody in the family has to have someone to cheer on.
Fans seem to miss having a results show. How do you handle the loss of that?
No individual one thing is bigger than the show as a whole. It’s just a great format. It gives us great ability to do different things. We have got two results shows for the first two weeks this season, which is great. There’s a lot of entertaining and interesting stuff in there.
But then again when we do get to one day a week, the great thing about that is that you make it an event once a week. Both things are good. You have to adapt and use change for your advantage.
Dancing With The Stars Season 19 Week 1 Interviews After The Dance And More Goodies (Recap, Videos, Photos)
What a night…and hey, a “colorful” one at that!! Wasn’t the set and the costumes beautiful? I’m still having “awwwww” moments in more ways than one. Photo below courtesy of Adam Taylor from Getty. To view more photos of all the couples dancing, the judges, etc. go HERE. If you missed any of the dances, troupe bumbers, etc, see Ballroom Stars Your Tube.
So, let’s find out what some of the couples thought of their dances with Access Hollywood below. You can also view some new interviews at E Online (we would embed those, but, they always mess up the site). Also, you can read a fun recap and view a fun gallery of photos at ABC7. Also below is a new interview with Alfonso with ABC7 before the show last night. You can also watch Tom Bergeron on The Chew yesterday at this link. Jimmy Kimmel’s predictions are also included below (he’s picking Alfonso to win). Glamour has some backstage coverage and pictures of the cast. Lastly, Heidi was up late last night capping some of the “behind the scenes” action from the official site. You can view what she posted at Pure Derek Hough. More later. We’re just getting started!
Rob Wade, I tip my hat to you, sir…I haven’t enjoyed a first episode of the season this much in a LOOOOONGGGG time I may have been on the struggle bus in the moments leading up to the premiere, as I had to hunt for a live feed for the first time ever (of course the Colts would play their first Monday Night Football game since 2010 on DWTS premiere night, the year ABC took over MNF from NBC); but the bulk of tonight’s dances more than made up for it. I quite literally agonized over most of my rankings – with the exception of maybe 2.5 dances that I would consider “not good”, I felt like everyone else really brought their A-game and delivered some solid routines. This was HARD, guys!
Other random things I enjoyed? The fact that they’re putting a lot more emphasis on the pros’ professional experience, and rattling off various titles they’ve won over the years – I think we sometimes lose sight of the fact that the bulk of our pros are CHAMPIONS in what they do. Also enjoyable? The fact that they cut the judges off if time was running tight Honestly, the bulk of what they say is just mindless prattling to me, so I’m more than thrilled that they opted to cut that out in favor of spending more time with the couples.
On with the rankings!
1.) Alfonso & Witney – First of all, a bit of a dorky confession: I may have teared up just a TINY bit watching Alfonso’s jive Alfonso has been my dream contestant for several years now, and watching him out there just KILLING it and the crowd going nuts felt to me like Heidi probably did watching Derek win his Emmy: I was just so daggone happy for the guy. It was kind of a dream come true, and he looked like he was having so much fun – so if you’re reading this, Alfonso – thanks for letting me live vicariously through you But anyway! As I said on Twitter – still any naysayers out there that think Alfonso isn’t the one to beat this season? He is just a consummate performer – he was 100% invested in the dance, his technique was as close to perfect as any of the jives tonight, and he really sold the performance. I won’t dwell too much, but I’m EXTREMELY excited to see what we’re gonna get from these two in the coming weeks…and I’m glad Alfonso seemed to let go & enjoy himself. Best night I’ve had since finding out he was going to be on the show
2.) Bethany & Derek – One of many pleasant surprises of the evening – and prior to tonight, I had only maybe seen one or two clips of Bethany, so I wasn’t sure quite what to expect; was impressed by how grounded and mature she acts for being only 18. Was also impressed by how well she handled the jive technique – I agree with Julianne that jive really is kind of cruel in week 1, but Bethany seemed to get the hang of the bounce and did a great job of extending her legs. I will agree with Carrie Ann, though, too, and say that there were a few points where she seemed to lose a bit of steam – chalk it up to exhaustion or first night jitters, but overall, I think she did a great job and has both room for improvement and some nice momentum for the season. Plus, she shares a name with my lil sister, so that’s got to be some kind of good karma Read more..

Hi kids!! Because there is a results show tomorrow night, this isn’t the usual spoiler post. But we thought you still might want someplace to discuss the show as it happens, etc. So here we are. As soon as Courtney gets her power rankings done, she will likely unstick this post from the top of the page and you can move over there to discuss if you like. Unless you’re off the topic of the couples….then you’ll probably want to stay here for a bit. Either way, comment to your hearts contents, as long as you remember the show night rules.
- Our server gets totally hosed when people sit at their computer and click “refresh” constantly. Post a comment, then walk away for five minutes so that others have a chance…and so that Courtney and I can actually post on the site.
- THIS SITE IS NOT TWITTER. Do not post like you are on twitter. You get one warning and then I put you in time out. We need context and content. Believe it or not there are a lot of people who don’t watch the east coast feed of the show, so they don’t know what the hell you’re talking about when you post a comment that says, “Boy, that sucked.” If you want to say “____ and ____’s dance was not good at all, crappy choreo” that’s fine. That would be context. It is good. Remember, if you post five one liners in five minutes, you’ve broken rule number 1.
My first comment of the night is: dammit, four live streams and a digital interview show?? Are you producers trying to hurt my poor little brain that just wants to watch a pretty dance show with hot boys?? SIMPLIFY people. Simplify. I don’t want to watch all that crap, but since I blog for two sites I feel obligated.
Thoughts so far:
Antonio – wooden
Lea – fantastic
Janel – over rated. They spent how much time on Lea’s experience and none on hers?? Not enough content – mugging at the camera, though.
Of course, TPTB put shipper tweets up on the screen for Val and Janel. And Val has started alluding to it. :::rolls eyes:::
Oh god, lolo. Screw up and then talk too much. Thank god for Tom Bergeron. I’m sorry, but the 6’s were generous.
Tony….PROPS ARE BAD. You and Betsey were doing so well up to then!!
Tavis did okay but I think Jules might have gotten into CAI’s crack.
Sadie is soooo cute.
Rick Schroder in the audience…
Michael, I love you. “My onesie gave me a wedgie!”
OMG – I love Tommy Chong. That was amazing. Nice guest appearance by Cheech!!
Holy crap – Randy and Karina!! We got a competition, folks. Between the good dancers and the fun characters? Wow. Tough season.
Great job by Bethany!! And we had that freakin’ song right the first time!!! Courtney texted me a “DAMMIT”. Very cute dance….I think she will be a contender if she can loosen up a bit.
Well, this could be a six way race to the trophy with Alfonso leading the way, followed by Randy, Lea, Sadie and Bethany.
Great first show everyone!! Courtney is coming up before too long with the Power Rankings!!
