Allison Holker Talks DWTS to HNGN

Nice, in-depth interview with Allison by HNGN – of course I agree with her comments on the best pros on the show, but  I love what she says about being married and her daughter. :-)  I also love how open and honest she is about having a partner with dance experience and how it helps. This is just a tiny bit of a very long interview. Click the link to read the whole thing – it’s a good read.

HNGN: When they announced that a few new dancers would be joining the show, nobody really knew that would be happening or if any new pros were coming on, it was kind of all of a sudden. Did it feel that way for you too?

AH: I feel like on the show, and this is just a personal feeling, it’s not a fact, I just feel like there hasn’t been a lot of new pros. Once they find someone that works, they stick to their crew and that is for the sole fact that it’s really just challenging for the pros, but in such a lovely way. Just being asked was a huge opportunity because they don’t do this often. That’s a huge honor. I really respect the show so much.

___

Do you think it helped that Riker had dancing experience in the past?

I definitely think so. There are certain things that really benefit on this show. I think the athletes have an advantage because they already know how to be agile in their bodies and they already know rhythm and the same for band members because they already know how to count music, so I was lucky that Riker was in a band. The most challenging thing you have to teach someone is how to learn dance. When you get those actors or you get the singers that don’t dance, sometimes it’s more challenging because you have to teach them what the levels are and how to learn the next step.

___

Does training start before “GMA” or right after?

Usually right after. You would hope before, but we try to keep it even as far as time so it’s not like someone has been working for a couple of weeks or something. They try to keep it pretty fair.

___

As for the pros, who do you find to be your biggest competition?

The best pro in my opinion is Derek Hough, but I feel blessed at the same time because whether he really knows it or not, Derek has always been a huge inspiration of mine and he’s one of the first people I ever started to choreograph with and I learned a lot from him. He inspires me all the time and he always pushes me. And also Mark, he is very very innovative and very very creative. You can feel that they get to know their partners so well and care about them so the celebrities themselves shine and you can see it and I really look up to both of them.

Dancing with the Stars Season 21 – Day-by-Day Cast Reveal!

Yes, that’s right. As we reported yesterday, DWTS is going to be revealing one celebrity per day this week, starting today. We’re going to pseudo live blog it so that you can see who the celeb is as soon as we know them. Then, down below that, we’re going to take a stab at guessing who their partner might be. Now, if they actually reveal the partner along with the celeb (I tend to doubt it, since they’ll want maximum DRAMA along with a bigger announcement on September 2) we’ll simply change that table to reflect that.

ETA: Just teased it with a woman with longish hair behind a screen. Said a “wild choice”. Hmmmm….guesses?
ETA2: I shoulda got that. :-)

ETA3: Reveal #2 coming up TODAY (Tuesday) at 6pm eastern on ESPN2!! Which sports figure will it be??

ETA4: According to the DWTS Official site the 2nd celebrity is Victor Espinoza. Awesome. I love him! ~Vogue

ETA5: Per the Backstreet Boys Facebook Page, Nick Carter is confirmed as the 3rd cast member for this season, and a source has confirmed that his partner is Sharna.  Source also confirms that Victor is with Karina, and that Mark is with Alexa Vega. Allegedly, 2 celebs are supposed to be announced tonight on Extra…or Inside Edition…or something like that.  Man, this is a clusterf*ck… -Court-

ETA6: Per DWTS360 on Twitter, Witney got Alex Vega’s husband (and Big Time Rush member) Carlos Pena. As was guessed by Jordan in comments. 😉

ETA7: We were discussing this a few days ago (and we had reported a rumor on him in July), but now we legit think that Andy Grammer MIGHT be on this season. Please note the word MIGHT.

ETA8: It’s official. Via his instagram Hayes Grier is dancing on Dancing With The Stars. ~Vogue

ETA9: ET Online confirms that both Alexa Vega & her husband, Carlos Pena Jr., are in; E! claims Kim Zolciak has joined the cast.

ETA10: E! News is claiming that Derek and Bindi showed up for rehearsal together. I don’t really take this as definite confirmation though – after all there are several studios there and couples could be rehearsing at the same time.

ETA11: And Chaka Kahn is confirmed via DWTS Twitter.

ETA12: And with this tweet, Andy Grammer is officially confirmed for this season’s cast…but this tweet from DWTSGossip does make me wonder if he’ll be paired with Peta after all…

ETA13: Oh jesus. Gary Busey. Well, at least I don’t have to stay up for Jimmy Kimmel, thanks to someone at the taping caping the in studio feed.

REVEAL #1 – Bindi Irwin

REVEAL #2 – Victor Espinoza

REVEAL #3 – Nick Carter

REVEAL #4 – Hayes Grier

REVEAL #5 – Alexa Vega

REVEAL #6 – Carlos Pena, Jr.

REVEAL #7 – Chaka Kahn

REVEAL #8 – Andy Grammer

REVEAL #9 – Gary Busey

REVEAL #10 –

REVEAL #11 –

REVEAL #12 –

We don’t know if it’s 12 or 13 right now as there have been conflicting reports. Both could have been right, in that perhaps they added someone last minute. :-)

——
So, here is where we guess who their partner might be…until someone leaks something and we can confirm it, or it’s announced on September 2. :-) Items in bold are confirmed – items not in bold are just our own guesses.

Link to the Pro Watch post

ETA: Changed Victor’s partner based on some intel we got. 😉

ETA2: I started sticking names in but when I started adding heights, I may have to reconsider…

ETA3: I feel safe confirming Derek and Bindi now. :-)

ETA4: A trusted source confirmed that Emma got Hayes (which we had pretty much guessed by his suspicious following & unfollowing on Twitter). Andy also confirmed in an interview that he got Peta, but that she was injured and he might have to dance with someone else….who Kristyn says will be Lindsay, should Peta sit this one out.  Hence the ** :-)

ETA5: It would figure that as soon as I update, the news changes 😛 Per People, Peta is out for the season – looks like Lindsay’s getting a second chance at pro! 😀

ETA13: Well, thanks to the detective work of DWTSGossip and Kristyn Burtt, it looks like Allison is Minnesota…as is Andy Grammer for a concert. Lindsay Arnold is…where? On the plane with the rest of the gang.  Honestly, I can’t work up any excitement any more. This crap has worn me out and the season hasn’t even started yet.

Guess the Pairs!!

PureDWTS Season 21 POLL: Who Do You Think the New Judge Will Be?

DWTSGossip dropped this interesting tidbit yesterday:

newjudge

Which seems to point to Len finally bowing out as head judge, and some new blood being brought in to round out the panel.  All signs seem to point to a male judge (not sure I could handle a panel of Carrie Ann “I Score with My Vagina, Not My Brain” Inaba, Bruno the Flamboyant, and Julianne, who can be a bit hit-or-miss), and a lot of folks seem to think it’s Tony – likely because he expressed interest in the position in an interview recently. Others are throwing out Louis & Maks’ names, and yet others are thinking it’s someone different altogether – I fall in the latter, as my gut is telling me that DWTS might borrow from another country’s version of the show and tap Jean Marc Genereaux from Danse avec les Stars in France (and DWTSGossip did mention that he/she had heard that DWTS France “would be involved in some way”).  I think there’s also a possibility that DWTS may try to “borrow” one of the ballroom choreographers from SYTYCD (Jean Marc or Tony Meredith fit the bill), or we might see Corky’s name thrown back in the mix. I do think the new judge will likely be someone who specializes in ballroom, though, as Len’s shoes are big ones to fill in terms of ballroom experience.

So assuming all of this is true – who do you guys think the new judge might be, and why? Tell us in the poll and the comments!

PureDWTS Season 21 Cast Possibility: Nick Carter?

Gonna preface this with my usual “take this with a grain of salt” warning, as it seems like this might be reeeealllly early for the pros to be meeting their partners – but as it is a slow news day and I did find this rather curious, I will go ahead and share.  Special thanks to CM for the heads up on this.

Looks like Nick Carter of The Backstreet Boys just started following Sharna out of the blue – maybe he just met her at a party in L.A., maybe he just thought she looked like a cool person to follow, who knows…but the timing is interesting.

nicksharna

Also interesting? This Instagram post from Sharna yesterday, without any sort of context:

Best.Day.Ever 👊

A photo posted by Sharna Burgess (@sharnaburgess) on

Maybe Sharna was just having a good day, maybe she had just gotten word that she was going to be a pro again this season…who knows. But just seemed rather coincidental that both of the above events would happen on the same day.

I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch for Nick to do the show – he’s from the only major boy band that DWTS has yet to cast from, plus his brother Aaron did the show back in 2009. And from the looks of the Backstreet Boys’ schedule, he’s free and clear until May of 2016. I think he’d be fun to watch, and if Sharna is, indeed, his partner – I think they’d be a good match.

Thoughts?

ETA: Apparently this screen shot is making the rounds among the Nick Carter fans – some guy named John is claiming on Instagram that Nick’s wife, Lauren, confirmed the other day on the set of his movie that he IS doing DWTS this season.  Take it with a big grain of salt, as it’s basically some random guy claiming he heard something (and his IG account is conveniently private) without anyone being able to verify it.  But who knows – maybe we’re not as crazy here at Pure as some seem to think we are 😉 nickondwts

PureDWTS Poll: Who is Your Favorite “One-And-Done” Pro?

They got one season to show us their stuff as a pro – and then we never saw them (as a pro) again.  They’re the pros whose tenure on DWTS was woefully short, and for some of them, we wonder if things had been different if they had gotten a different partner, or had a bit more experience, etc. etc. etc. But I keep seeing a few names in particular that seem to pop up in the comments section, and it got me thinking: is it time for TPTB to revisit some of these names as pros again? Let’s hear what you think – which one of these one-and-done pros was your favorite? And which one would you like to see as a pro again?

For me, it was a no-brainer: Sasha.  I think the dude’s only shortcoming (no pun intended) is that he’s simply too small in stature to be a suitable partner for the bulk of the female celebs that get cast.  After seeing how great of a substitute partner he was to Nastia last season, and how he does whatever is asked of him without complaint – I’m convinced that we could see AMAZING things out of Sasha as a pro, if they would only give him another shot.  I hear the Olsen twins are short…and not really up to much these days 😉

Oddly enough, the other pro I found myself curious about was Anna Demidova – I remember that she actually was quite good with Michael Irvin, and seemed to be a teacher that was very good at communicating with and motivating her partner.  Found myself thinking of Gleb, too – he may not have really shined terribly brightly with Lisa, but once he moved over to DWTS Russia I think he really hit a nice stride.  Would he be able to hang with our pros, though? Who knows…

How did you vote?

Dancing with the Stars Season 21 – PRO WATCH!!

Here we are again!! It’s about that time of year, folks.

And, as usual, the pros that I don’t want to be in, are already in. Or in Derek’s case….mostly in. :-)  He’s been telling fans in Meet and Greets that he’s likely going to be on but doesn’t want to confirm in case something happens to change that. DWTSGossip says that he did indeed say yes to this season – but as she correctly pointed out, he’s said no before and it turned into a yes. But, this is Derek’s life right now (many, MANY irons in the fire) – he’s not doing it for PR, he just doesn’t know what’s going to happen. Drives me crazy. :-)  I’ll be writing a blog soon on PureDerekHough.com about my Meet and Greet and how he answered a particular question I asked him that bodes very well for his future.

Val has also said he’ll be back and, as reigning champ, that’s no surprise. He also doesn’t seem to have the options that Derek does. I also will be curious to see how much they pimp and manipulate for him and his partner, now that he actually has a MBT. This could be one of the more interesting things about this season – if their behavior toward him changes, now that it’s mission accomplished. Someone please explain to me why Sharna or Emma don’t get the pimpage treatment?? Their social media accounts can’t touch the men’s, but still.

What about Mark? I expect him back as it helps his music career, and now his studio, for him to be on the show. I think it’s about time for him to have another shot at the MBT again – it’s not like he’s been handed ringers the past couple seasons (unlike some), he’s just been surprised and fortunate, like Derek has in the past. But I haven’t seen any talk from him on the matter. Read more..

PureDWTS: The Pros, The Judges, & Their (Sometimes Embarrassing) Music Video Pasts!

Because it’s summer and there’s not much else DWTS-related to talk about – why not get a blast from the past and take a look at what some of our pros and judges do when they’re not performing on the show? And in this case, the activity in question is appearing in music videos – with varying results.  Some of them are pretty cool, others are blink-and-you-miss-it cameos, and some…should probably stay buried forever :-) Let’s check it out… Read more..

PureDWTS Discussion Post: Spencer Liff on the Choreography “Controversy”

I saw this the other day and kind of ignored it. Mainly because I don’t really consider it a “controversy” OR new information. But I’m bored – the dog days of summer and waiting for DWTS Fall Season news to break is getting old. Plus Vogue is on vaycay and me and Court have to try to fill the void. :-)

We’ve known that outside choreographers help for YEARS. Derek just mentioned it in a meet and greet the other day when asked about choreography. I don’t recall the context, but he said that he only used an outside choreographer for his and Shawn’s bhangra, but he knows that others do it more frequently….and he can always tell when outside help was used. He’s very observant, so that’s no surprise, plus he knows all of them very well. He apparently didn’t think it was a huge deal – and neither does Spencer Liff. Spencer makes some interesting points and seems to defend Witney (if she needs defending) pretty clearly. He says that outside “help” doesn’t have a right to the statue. What are you going to do? Count the steps that you contributed? What he seems to be saying – at the risk of putting words in his mouth – is that the contracted individual is responsible, is in charge and deserves the credit for that. What do you think?

Also, what I found interesting was that Spencer said he has “ghosted” on DWTS “many times” – this is intriguing, just cuz I’m nosey. :-) But the money comes out of the DWTS pros pocket when they get help, and it’s done away from the regular rehearsal spaces – and he says take your paycheck and keep your mouth shut. Very interesting conversation in the first five minutes of the video I’ve posted, below.

At the end of the day, Witney tried and gave full credit to her assistant and DWTS apparently tried as well. But the Academy has rules. Someone else mentioned in the video that the producers are limited to THREE nominees also, even if more producers were involved. Too bad. Those of you “helping” either need to stop helping without being contracted to the show, or suck it up and take the pay the DWTS pros give you.

Courtney: First off, a tip of the hat to Spencer – I’ve always found him to be one of the less “diva-ish” choreographers on SYTYCD, and while I may not have always been wowed by his choreography, I think he’s always done a good job of giving routines that are appropriate to the style he’s been assigned (unlike others, who seem to take “jazz” as an opportunity to do a contemporary routine).  I think he also did great job of explaining what’s what as it pertains to the nominations – it was very “Look here, guys – as someone who’s been nominated before, let me tell you that if you are ghosting on a routine, you are just that – a ghost.  Do not expect credit unless it was truly a collaborative effort – you don’t get to say ‘But I choreographed 20% of that!’ after the fact.  Your money is your compensation – take it and shut up.” Anyone else get the feeling he was a tad irked that some people were even trying to pull that stuff? 😉 Now, with that being said – I feel like him comparing his “assistants” on SYTYCD is maybe not a perfect analogy to what we think the situation has been at DWTS.  I’ve always gotten the impression that those “assisting” on SYTYCD were just helping the choreographer to show the routine to the couple they’re choreographing – they don’t actually contribute much, creativity-wise.  They’re just a body.  The impression I get from DWTS is that it’s one pro actively contributing to another pro’s work – giving advice on choreography.  But, I do agree with Spencer – it gets to be really tricky determining how much credit you give for a partial contribution by another pro. I look at a true collaboration as something akin to Derek & Chelsie’s acoustic paso back in season 10 – they agreed to work together and both were involved every step of the way, therefore a co-nomination was appropriate; but I get the feeling that the dances in question (presumably Witney’s, though I see the female pros are still dancing around naming names) were more like Witney getting somewhat into choreographing something and saying “Crap, I’ve hit a wall with this part.  Hey Sharna (or whoever), can you help me work through this part right here?” And then Sharna (or whoever) contributing something to a portion of the dance, and then walking away.  It wasn’t as if Pro A and Pro B started off choreographing from the beginning together; the concept of the dance was probably Witney’s idea, and the bulk of the spacing/set design/costume design/choreography was also hers. But anywho – the degree of entitlement being what it is amongst the pros at DWTS these days (as well as the degree of butthurt-ness), can’t say I’m surprised that some of the pros are basically scoffing at what has been standard operating procedure at the Academy for many years and feeling as though they are due some sort of credit.  Cause everybody is a winner and a special little snowflake that deserves an MBT, and Emmy nomination, and whatever his/her little heart desires – because FAIRNESS, guys. But yes, please do continue to throw shade at other pros for something that was likely out of their control, anyway – and then get indignant when fans try to guess just who you’re passive-aggressively tweeting about.  Such a good look :-) Funny how people think WE start “fan wars”…the pros are doing a fine job of it themselves… Read more..

America’s Ballroom Challenge is Back – Mary Murphy talks DWTS, Ballroom, and Derek and Julianne Hough

Mary Murphy’s not on So You Think You Can Dance anymore – she says there will be very little ballroom, which is a damn shame – but she’s talking America’s Ballroom Challenge. Honestly, one couple on SYTYCD attempted a Cha Cha the other night and butchered it badly – worse than some on DWTS – so maybe the change isn’t so bad. From Yahoo TV (thanks to Motisima):

“On So You Think You Can Dance, most of the time you’re seeing two people who have never ballroom danced, and it’s kind of all smoke and mirrors,” Murphy tells Yahoo TV. “Honestly, they can edit everything to get the best vantage of every step. And Dancing With the Stars is the same thing, too — you’re dancing with a celebrity, sometimes they have danced, sometimes no dance. For these people [on America’s Ballroom Challenge], dance is their life. They are professionals at the highest level. You will see the best of the best.”

RIDER: Derek Hough
“Julianne and Derek are about as good as you’re going to get,” Murphy said. “Derek, especially, I’ve been watching that kid since he was 7 years old. For me, the pinnacle was that Argentine Tango the other night [on Dancing With the Stars]. I just was so impressed with him. There was just such maturity about him. I feel like I’m seeing him as a young man now, as opposed to looking at him always as a kid.”

The 2015 Emmy Nominations – How Did DWTS Do? Slightly Live Blog

Here’s our post from a few days ago, talking about what we thought might happen with the Choreography nominations. The reality is…

DWTS got EIGHT nominations total, two of which are choreography nominations.

DWTS is nominated for Outstanding Reality Program

More to come when all noms are posted….

TWO Nominations for Choreography
Derek Hough/Julianne Hough/Tessandra Chavez – Elastic Heart
Witney Carson – It’s Not Unusual/369/Sing With A Swing-Apache

There are only five nominees this year which echos Courtney’s thought that SYTYCD didn’t have a particularly strong year. I still maintain that Travis will win, and I did pretty well predicting what he would be nominated for.

Outstanding Host – Tom Bergeron

No shock to see Tom up there!

Outstanding Hairstyling – Dancing With The Stars • Episode 1907

Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Series – Dancing With The Stars • Episode 1911A

Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Special – Dancing With The Stars: 10th Anniversary Special

Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special (Non-Prosthetic) – Dancing With The Stars • Episode 1907
