DWTS Season 19 Contestant Tommy Chong 2nd Celeb Voted Off “The Masked Singer”; More Former DWTS Contestants Likely Behind the Masks

Well, as we hypothesized last week – it sure seems like the casting department for The Masked Singer went fishing for contestants from the pool of celebs that have done DWTS. Six new masked celebs performed last night, and my favorite of Peta’s former partners, Chong, was sent home after an exuberant (but just ok, if we’re being honest) performance of “I Will Survive”…while dressed as a pineapple, I might add 😛 And while only Chong was unmasked, there are four other contestants who may or may not be past DWTS competitors, based on the clues…shall we have a look?

“The Rabbit”

Clues given: has spent most of his life onstage, but never alone; he now “pops up here, and pops up there”; synchronized singing is his forte; he’s performed in a mask before; the last man standing “is gonna be me”

Who it might be: NSYNC member and DWTS season 4 finalist/all-stars contestant Joey Fatone (but I haven’t ruled out JC Chasez as a possibility)

Why: NSYNC had a hit called “It’s Gonna Be Me”; Joey seems to pop up in the most random places anymore (DWTS, hosting game shows, hawking male hair loss products); the only clue that’s throwing me is the straight jacket – yes, NSYNC did a video where they were in an insane asylum for “I Drive Myself Crazy” (which, in retrospect, was in rather poor taste) and they all wore straitjackets, but the cover of JC’s solo album Schizophrenic also features him in a straitjacket. Both men are of similar heights, though Joey seems quite a bit stockier than JC…but who knows.

“The Raven”

Clues given: “all my life, I’ve listened to other people’s stories”; always been a “sunny kind of person”; “no one talks more than me”; recently suffered a “tragic loss”, show is giving her the opportunity to “honor my beloved”

Who I’m fairly certain it is: talk show host and DWTS season 13 finalist Ricki Lake

Why: Ricki’s best known as a talk show host, but she also has dabbled in singing/performing – she played Tracy Turnblad in the original movie of Hairspray. Her ex-husband sadly committed suicide in February of 2017.

“The Poodle”

Clues given: loves to take on different characters while onstage; lots of clips of San Francisco shown – particularly the Castro District, which is a well-known LGBTQ area; comes from a “musical family”, but “known for a different kind of talent”; “STAND UP!”; pictures of rainbows; “time to return to my musical roots”; “to figure me out, you’re gonna have to WORK!!!”

Who I’m fairly certain it is: comedian and DWTS season 11 contestant Margaret Cho

Why: She’s a stand-up comedian from San Francisco, and has always been outspoken in her support of the LGBTQ community; has actually released an album and can legitimately sing

“The Bee”

Clues given: long career, and has never wanted to stop doing what she loves; “you can call me Queen Bee, but ‘Empress’ also suits me”; guys in suits in the background doing synchronized moves to a Motown-sounding track; “looking forward to singing to a new generation”; career started in the ’50s

Who I’m fairly certain it is: R&B legend and DWTS season 14 contestant Gladys Knight

Why: Gladys has been around for awhile, and she first started performing in the 1950s; nickname is the “Empress of Soul”; the Pips were 3 guys who did synchronized dance moves behind Gladys when they were performing

And in case you missed it (and love Chong like I do), here are Chong’s clues and performance:

As for the last remaining contestant, The Alien – still torn on that one, but most folks seem to be guessing Kendall Jenner.  What are your thoughts on the identities of the contestants, both this week’s and last week’s? 😎

PureDWTS Season 18, Week 5 – Disney Week Song Predictions/Wish List!!!

Bye-bye, gadawful switch week – helllloooo, Disney week! This may be the one good idea TPTB have had the entire season 😀 Sounds like a lot of you are pretty pumped about it – so why not get even more excited by compiling a song wish list and seeing if we might be able to predict what everyone might be dancing to, shall we?

Vogue & I came up with a list of the most popular Disney songs we could think of and divided them up by dance style – Deep Throat indicated that all the songs were probably going to be very well-known, so while I think it would be totes appropos to see Maks dancing to “Gaston” from Beauty & the Beast, it’s probably far more likely that he & Meryl have a song like “Beauty & the Beast” or “Be Our Guest”.

If you didn’t catch it yesterday, some of the couples revealed some clues about their dances in this media post Vogue posted yesterday.  Some other clues, which I revealed on Twitter yesterday? Both Meryl & Charlie have eschewed the expected “Disney princess/prince” roles that some were hoping they’d assume this week, and are both going for “something different”.  And because Peta is about as subtle as a sledgehammer (thanks, emojis) I’ll go ahead and throw out one song spoiler: James & Peta are, indeed, doing contemporary to “Let it Go” from Frozen. Happy Hump Day, kids 😉

DWTS 15 – The Great Quickstep Debate: Breaking Hold vs. Not Breaking Hold

In his Access Hollywood interview from after Monday night’s show, Mark explained his reasons for “breaking hold” in he in Bristol’s quickstep – and he also insinuated that a few other couples also broke hold in their quicksteps this week, yet didn’t get called out by the judges.  So it got me thinking: did the judges, indeed, turn a blind eye to some couples’ rule-breaking, while calling out others?

First, a little bit of background as to why breaking hold in quickstep is such a big deal.  Earlier this year, I went into detail about it in one of my “Ask Courtney” posts – the basic gist is that quickstep is the only ballroom dance on DWTS that is only danced in the International Standard style, in which you cannot break hold at all, and they’ve carried that rule over to DWTS.  I personally think it’s kind of a dumb rule, considering that DWTS is not a real ballroom competition (and never will be), and considering that you can break hold in the waltz, foxtrot, Viennese waltz, and sometimes tango (the last one is whole different debate). Hope Solo on Maks and DWTS – Opinion

I’m sure that many of you saw the excerpts from Hope’s book tweeted by @DWTSGossip yesterday. While it appears that we cover every single thing DWTS related, we actually don’t. We tend to stay far away from pure, unadulterated, unsubstantiated gossip, particularly when it involves private lives or people’s livelihoods. So, when Vogue read those pages, she asked me what to do about it. I took it to the group and we here are PureDWTS had a bit of discussion on just what to do about it.

The end result of that discussion was that we would give our *opinions* on what we read, but we would not be re-posting those pages for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the potential for copyright infringement. If you must read them, by all means, go buy the book. We do have limits on just what we will post, but as this book speaks directly to DWTS production we figured we would at least comment on it. I’m up first. And I don’t quite know where to start. Except that I would remind everyone to remember that this is HOPE’S point of view and Maks has not been given the opportunity to respond OR defend himself. He has responded, somewhat, on Twitter and as you might imagine he is not happy at all, and he does give the impression that this is all lies by an “opportunist”. (See Notes at bottom.)

I am not a Maks fan, but I don’t think he’s a horrible human being or any such thing. He’s flawed, like most people are. I think that we have to assume that much of what Hope said about their interaction is true…to a point. After all, we saw some of it on camera. And she does say that they had plenty of good times that, of course, weren’t shown. I have to say, though, that Maks knows that by now and should have warned Hope accordingly. Instead he plays into productions hands time and again and then whines about it. On top of that, most everyone who is a regular at this site knows that I was appalled by his behavior that was shown at the time. Nothing makes that right. And if he actually hit her like she claims?? There is no excuse for that. But I would be lying if there wasn’t a large part of me that really wondered about the veracity of a lot of her comments. How much is inflated to sell her book…and get us talking just like we are?

Part of the reason I wonder such things is that some of her claims are so outlandish. As we have discussed many times on this site, the show can’t be rigged the way she says that Maks told her…that he had been told that there was a “secret memo” that said who was to be eliminated each week, and that they were going home so he was just causing drama to get ratings and get them to stick around longer. That may have been the end result…but it’s not determined in advance. There are rules in reality TV, believe it or not. Then all her claims that they were dancing a dance that was so much better and so much harder than everyone else’s, that no one else could do it. Um, really? I don’t remember that dance at all. If Maks was actually telling her that, he’s either delusional, or trying to build her confidence – and based on the whole section about where it looked like she was saying “F*^k you” to the judges I would have to say the latter. Dancing with the Stars 2012 Emmy Nominations!!

And the nominees are….

OUTSTANDING HOST

TOM BERGERON
Cat Deely
Phil Keogan
Ryan Seacrest
Betty White

Jeff Probst not nominated and he usually wins. I would say Tom or Cat were a shoe in, if not for Betty White.

OUTSTANDING REALITY PROGRAM

DANCING WITH THE STARS
So You Think You can Dance
The Amazing Race
Top Chef
Project Runway
The Voice

TAR wins this one every season.

OUTSTANDING CHOREOGRAPHY

Travis Wall, Without You (DWTS)
Stacey Tookey, SYTYCD
Christopher Scott, SYTYCD
Spencer Liff, SYTYCD
Joshua Bergnasse, Smash

I don’t know whether to rant about this now or save it for later. I KNEW when they had Travis on DWTS that our choreographers were going to get shut out of this category. I predicted it back when the show was on this last season. Let’s just say I’m pissed off at this nomination and I’m pissed off at this category – it is unbelievably slanted toward anything that is not ballroom. They didn’t even list the nomination ballots on the website like they did for everything else. I spent a long time looking for it.

OUTSTANDING HAIR STYLING FOR A MULTI CAMERA SERIES OR SPECIAL

DWTS for episode 1407 (season 14, week 7)

OUTSTANDING LIGHTING DESIGN FOR A VARIETY SERIES

DWTS for Episode 1307

OUTSTANDING MAKE UP FOR A MULTI CAMERA SERIES

DWTS for Episode 1307

OUTSTANDING TECHNICAL DIRECTION, CAMERAWORK, VIDEO CONTROL FOR A SERIES

DWTS for Episode 1410A

That one makes me chuckle a bit, considering how often Courtney and I put camera gaffes in our Cheesecake Awards. 😀

That was all the nominations I saw – now Vogue will go behind me and make sure I didn’t leave anything or anyone out. And look at the Choreo again, would ya?? I think it drove me temporarily insane and I might have missed something. 🙂

UPDATE: Vogue here with some Emmy nomination reactions from Tom Bergeron, Travis Wall, and the Dancing With The Stars Make-Up Team….

Tom tweeted, “Probst will still find a way to win this thing!” He’s a crack up as always.

From ET, Travis Wall said, “I can’t believe that our dance company’s (Shaping Sound) first performance on TV got an Emmy nomination. I am elated! It’s amazing to have a nomination two years in a row but it’s surreal to have this nomination with my best friends!”

Also, from the Dancing With The Stasrs Make-up Team at facebook, they wrote: “Great news today! The Dancing with the Stars Makeup Team has been nominated for an Emmy Award!!! We hope to bring it home for a 2nd time. Please wish us luck!!!”

Trista Sutter – a few interesting tweets that seemed to imply she was heading somewhere to do something secret, but now says she is definitely not taking part in the all-star season 🙁
Kelly Monaco – hinted at a GH fan event that she was “going to need fans’ help with something that’s getting announced next Friday!”

Season 2:

Stacy Keibler – played coy, said “possibly” if she was asked to return; says we’ll “have to wait & find out”; rumored as a possible X-Factor host; Entertainment Weekly claiming she’s not likely to do the show

Joey Lawrence – asked fans on Twitter to vote for him to get on the all-star season

Season 4:

GSN Drops DWTS Reruns from Lineup

I realize this is super, super late, but I think we all got so swept up in the hustle & bustle of season 14 that no one really even noticed this – plus, it happened rather quietly, so I myself didn’t even notice until I was cleaning up my DVR yesterday and saw that there was nothing set up to record on GSN…but it piqued my interest, so I’m sharing it now, and thought I’d get your thoughts on it 🙂

According to Buzzerblog, GSN dropped reruns of DWTS from its lineup starting April 16:

That didn’t last long, did it?  GSN’s most recent attempt at reality shows, exclusive off-network reruns of Dancing With the Stars, are on their way out.  The reruns of ABC’s popular dancing game show, which have proved to be anything but popular for GSN, are leaving the network’s schedule starting the week of April 16th.  GSN debuted the show on Saturday, January 21st.  The debut failed to crack the top 15 most watched shows.  First-run reruns averaged 304,000 viewers and has gone down hill since.  Most recent figures had the show down to 173,000 viewers on average.  Reruns of shows like Family Feud take its place.

I have to say, I’m a little surprised – granted, I was not expecting the reruns to get even a fraction of the ratings that the current seasons get, but with all the publicity they did back in January (and all the hype surrounding GSN buying the rights), I would have thought they would have at least gotten some bang for their buck in terms of ratings, from fans of the show…but 173k is downright meager, especially when you take into account that reruns of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and Family Feud pull in upwards of 500k in viewers for GSN.  And when you take into account that DWTS was the lowest-rated show in a primetime slot on GSN the last week it aired (all the shows below it were in early AM slots, which aren’t expected to pull in a ton of viewers), that’s…pretty bad. I have to wonder if it was just PureDWTS fans that were tuning in, after all the free publicity we gave GSN during the big launch 😉

So I guess my big question is, “What went wrong?” It did seem a little strange that they started off airing season 4, but then skipped ahead to season 12 – did the fact that season 12 only happened a year ago deter some viewers, who would have rather seen an older season? Or were the odds just stacked against them when they aired reruns concurrent with a new season? Or was there just never really a huge demand for DWTS reruns from the get-go? Who knows.  But I have to wonder if reruns might fare better now that they’ve announced that they’re doing an all-star season – perhaps there might be more a demand for reruns, so fans can relive the magic from the first time around? I do think it will be interesting to see what GSN’s next move is – they still own the rights to seasons 4-13, so if they wanted to start airing them again, they could – hell, I think they’d have better luck in a summer slot, anyway, plus they have the boon of the all-star season looming. But will they even bother, given how much of a failure their first attempts at reruns were? I don’t know that there’s really a demand on any other network for DWTS reruns, so I doubt they’d have an easy time selling off the rights to another network, other than BBC America (they own the rights to seasons 1-3, but have yet to actually do anything with them).  I’m just hoping we get at least some of the seasons back on Hulu, so I don’t have to scavenge & beg for pictures everytime I want to do an edition of “Who Wore It Better”? 🙂

So what do you guys think of the whole situation? Are you upset that you won’t catch the reruns…or do you not really care? Do you think GSN should give it another shot…or try and sell the rights to the reruns as fast as they can?

DWTS Season 14, The Finale – Dancing by the Numbers

Well, as it stands right now and based on scores alone, it’s anyone’s game. Such a small margin going into tomorrow night. But really, Donald’s freestyle?? Would have won the competition any other season.  Any other season that didn’t have the ridiculous pimping and fawning over another contestant who is totally unworthy of the praise.

Please, Cheryl – take a break. You did William NO favors with that totally predictable freestyle. Donald wasn’t the only one who totally called it. My twitter feed predicted the whole dance before it aired
to the point that I died laughing at the shirt ripping and the faux standing intercourse on the floor.  Lord, Len picks a great time to agree with me. I would have given it an 8, though. He was too generous.  If William wins this he will be the most undeserving winner in history.

Katherine did a great job on both dances, with the exception of some awkwardness on the lifts during the freestyle and a tiny bit of softness in the legs during the Paso. I don’t think either dance was worth a 30, but, like Courtney said, the judges really hosed her on the dance selection. They gave all their favors to William
how many cha cha’s has he learned now?? Three or four? And even then, Cheryl’s choreo didn’t stand up to Peta’s and Mark’s. Me thinks someone is relying on the sex factor and over scoring to carry her through.  Interestingly, I saw Katherine on E! News and they asked her about taking clothes off and she said, “We’re not about taking off clothes. It’s about the dancing for us.”  Now, those of you who have been reading this blog for a long time know that I would normally skewer someone for that sort of commentary for its subtle diss of another contestant.  Not this season. Not when even Len is calling a freestyle “predictable”. The truth hurts, kids, and Katherine and Donald ARE about the dancing. William and Cheryl?? Not so much.  They’ve gone to the same well too many times, and if there is any justice they won’t go home with the trophy.

Anyway

The Judges Scores and Percentages

Place Celebrity Score Percentage
1. Katherine 60 33.71
2. William 59 33.15
3. Donald 59 33.15

So, as you can see, there is only a tiny margin going into Tuesday’s final dance.  Of course, this dance is also scored and has the ability to change the game entirely. My question is – just how invested are the judges in William?? Do they want him to win badly enough to seriously skew it AFTER everyone has voted?? On CAI and Bruno’s part, I would say yes. So I’m putting all my faith in Len. 🙂

In order for either William or Donald to overtake Katherine and win, at this point, either or both of them need to get 5,620 more votes per million votes cast. That’s a very small number.  Discounting the final dance for a minute, if both men beat that spread, then Katherine comes in third.  Then it becomes a race between the two men and whoever gets the most votes win. Period.

Except not period. 🙂  The judges have one more shot at screwing it up.  So, let’s play a game of “what if?”  There are a couple different ways it could go tomorrow.  Option 1 – the judges cop out and give everyone a 30.  If they do that, then the margin between Katherine and the two men decreases to 3,735 votes per million votes cast. A virtual tie.

Option 2 is one of the two men chokes and gets
let’s say a 28. Since I think that man is more likely to be Donald (based on history), that’s what we’ll go with. If it happens to William, just substitute his name here.  So, if Donald gets a 28 and William and Katherine get 30s??  For Donald to WIN, he would need both of the following:

–          Donald would need 7,520 more votes per million votes cast than William, AND;

–          Donald would need 11,280 more votes per million votes cast than Katherine.

After his freestyle, I think Donald can do it. I just hope he doesn’t have to.  If the positions are reversed, I think William can likely do it as well.

Option 3 is the one where the judges just totally level the playing field. That is, the two men both get 30 and Katherine gets a 29. Of course, if that happens it’s a tie ball game and the high vote getter wins. It certainly should be Donald in first place, Katherine in second place with William taking third. Whether that happens or not I have no good idea.

Of course, there is one last, thoroughly repulsive option.  That is the option where Donald and Katherine are both given something less than 30 while William gets a 30. If that number is a 29, then Katherine and Willy are tied and Donald needs 3,760 to catch them. Of course, that is chump change and Donald should be able to do it based on his freestyle.  But if they get 28s?? If that happens, then in judges scores William is in first place, Katherine in second and Donald in third.  For Donald to win, he would need both of the following:

–          Donald needs 3,790 more votes per million votes cast than Katherine, AND;

–          Donald needs 7,580 more votes per million votes cast than William.

Should be easy enough.  For Katherine to win in that scenario she needs BOTH of the following:

–          Katherine needs Donald to not cover the spread, AND;

–          Katherine needs 3,790 more votes per million votes cast than William.

I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see either of those things happening.  In that scenario, for William to win he simply needs for neither Donald nor Katherine to cover the spread.

So, after looking at all the various scenarios, nothing has changed my mind. I think it comes down to William and Donald. Which of the two men wins depends heavily on the final dance. Unless Donald really blows it and gets underscored relative to William (again) I think Donald wins.

I’m going to say:

Donald – Winner
William – Second Place
Katherine – Third Place.

I would love it if Willy got knocked to third place. I also wouldn’t mind at all if Katherine were to win – but I don’t think so.
