DWTS Season 19 Contestant Tommy Chong 2nd Celeb Voted Off “The Masked Singer”; More Former DWTS Contestants Likely Behind the Masks

Well, as we hypothesized last week – it sure seems like the casting department for The Masked Singer went fishing for contestants from the pool of celebs that have done DWTS. Six new masked celebs performed last night, and my favorite of Peta’s former partners, Chong, was sent home after an exuberant (but just ok, if we’re being honest) performance of “I Will Survive”…while dressed as a pineapple, I might add šŸ˜› And while only Chong was unmasked, there are four other contestants who may or may not be past DWTS competitors, based on the clues…shall we have a look?

“The Rabbit”

Clues given: has spent most of his life onstage, but never alone; he now “pops up here, and pops up there”; synchronized singing is his forte; he’s performed in a mask before; the last man standing “is gonna be me”

Who it might be: NSYNC member and DWTS season 4 finalist/all-stars contestant Joey Fatone (but I haven’t ruled out JC Chasez as a possibility)

Why: NSYNC had a hit called “It’s Gonna Be Me”; Joey seems to pop up in the most random places anymore (DWTS, hosting game shows, hawking male hair loss products); the only clue that’s throwing me is the straight jacket – yes, NSYNC did a video where they were in an insane asylum for “I Drive Myself Crazy” (which, in retrospect, was in rather poor taste) and they all wore straitjackets, but the cover of JC’s solo album Schizophrenic also features him in a straitjacket. Both men are of similar heights, though Joey seems quite a bit stockier than JC…but who knows.

“The Raven”

Clues given: “all my life, I’ve listened to other people’s stories”; always been a “sunny kind of person”; “no one talks more than me”; recently suffered a “tragic loss”, show is giving her the opportunity to “honor my beloved”

Who I’m fairly certain it is: talk show host and DWTS season 13 finalist Ricki Lake

Why: Ricki’s best known as a talk show host, but she also has dabbled in singing/performing – she played Tracy Turnblad in the original movie of Hairspray. Her ex-husband sadly committed suicide in February of 2017.

“The Poodle”

Clues given: loves to take on different characters while onstage; lots of clips of San Francisco shown – particularly the Castro District, which is a well-known LGBTQ area; comes from a “musical family”, but “known for a different kind of talent”; “STAND UP!”; pictures of rainbows; “time to return to my musical roots”; “to figure me out, you’re gonna have to WORK!!!”

Who I’m fairly certain it is: comedian and DWTS season 11 contestant Margaret Cho

Why: She’s a stand-up comedian from San Francisco, and has always been outspoken in her support of the LGBTQ community; has actually released an album and can legitimately sing

“The Bee”

Clues given: long career, and has never wanted to stop doing what she loves; “you can call me Queen Bee, but ‘Empress’ also suits me”; guys in suits in the background doing synchronized moves to a Motown-sounding track; “looking forward to singing to a new generation”; career started in the ’50s

Who I’m fairly certain it is: R&B legend and DWTS season 14 contestant Gladys Knight

Why: Gladys has been around for awhile, and she first started performing in the 1950s; nickname is the “Empress of Soul”; the Pips were 3 guys who did synchronized dance moves behind Gladys when they were performing

And in case you missed it (and love Chong like I do), here are Chong’s clues and performance:

As for the last remaining contestant, The Alien – still torn on that one, but most folks seem to be guessing Kendall Jenner.Ā  What are your thoughts on the identities of the contestants, both this week’s and last week’s? šŸ˜Ž

PureDWTS Tribute: Julia Ivleva

Remember this gorgeous waltz that Jonathan & Anna danced in tribute to their cancer-stricken friend, Julia, back in season 14?

Sadly, Anna reported on her Twitter today that Julia passed away this morning, after a long & courageous battleĀ with lung cancer.Ā  She remembered her friend poignantly:

[blackbirdpie url=”https://twitter.com/atrebunskaya/status/320241630164705282″]

Julia’s passing touched me rather personally, as I had the pleasure of watching Julia and her husband, Igor, dance at one of the first ballroom competitions I attended, almost ten years ago.Ā  I was struck by how powerful they were on the floor, and their showdances were always the most creative and engaging.Ā  I feel blessed to have been present to witness the debut of one of the greatest showdances in ballroom history – when Igor & Julia proved that you can dance ballroom to any music…even Nirvana!

And a few years later, they again proved that rock & ballroom can mix perfectly, when they did this beautiful, vulnerable foxtrot to quite possibly my favorite song of all-time:

We here at Pure send our heartfelt condolences out to Julia’s friends and family during this sad time.Ā  Rest in peace, Julia.

DWTS Season 15, Week 1 – The Cheesecake Awards!!!!

Well kids, we’re back & snarky/juvenile/perverse/etc!Ā  šŸ˜› And for those of you not accustomed to our particular brand of humor – consider yourself warned.Ā  We swear, we get innuendo-y, we make fart jokes, and we call people out for being stupid on the show.Ā  If you are hypersensitive/lack a sense of humor/are a prude/whatever, you probably should just skip this post altogether…and you sure as hell better not comment on it.Ā  Because any Debbie Downers/Bobby Buzzkills lurking in the comments section will be deleted without a 2nd thought.Ā  Consider this the party post – party poopers need not apply, because we have plenty of fellow freaks who love to party along with our special brand of humor.Ā  Party on, Wayne šŸ˜‰

The “C U Next Tuesday” Award: Carrie Ann Inaba, for repeatedly calling out Tom for cutting her off

Courtney: We learned pretty quickly on Monday whether we’d get cool Carrie Ann or bitter, angry Carrie Ann this season – and I think she made it pretty clear it’s definitely the latter.Ā  Look, CAI, I get it: your fairytale engagement didn’t result in a fairytale wedding, and you’re probably not too happy about that.Ā  But did you really have to repeatedly heckle EMMY AWARD-WINNING HOST Tom Bergeron for cutting your commentary on Joey & Kym’s cha-cha off early? It was pretty obvious the show was moving at breakneck speed in order to fit everyone in, and I daresay that, beingĀ the EMMY AWARD -WINNING HOST of a LIVE reality tv show, Tom Bergeron knows a thing or two about effectively fitting into a time frame while still being entertaining – plus he probably had the Muppets upstairs screaming in his earpiece to move things along.Ā  I highly doubt whatever long-winded critique you were going to offer up was all that insightful, CAI – it seldom is.Ā  Yet your excessive self-importance forced you to interrupt things not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES to remind everyone that Tom cut you off – who’s the asshat now?

Heidi:Ā My brother texted me during the show to call CAI names….then commented that her tampon is in sideways. šŸ™‚ Ā Yes, that is my family…we tend toward gross at times. But also very apropos. Ā But seriously, don’t heckle The Berg, biotch. It’s not all about you. Hard to believe, I know.

Courtney: Looks like someone had a bad case of Emmy Envy.Ā  šŸ˜›

The “Deeerrrrp” Award: Chelsie Hightower, for getting confused over the native languages of Brazil & South America; (dis)honorable mention – Val Chmerkovskiy, for not really knowing what Kelly did for a living

Courtney: “Wait…they speak Spanish in South America???” I’d like to think this was taken out of context, but from the puzzled look on Chelsie’s face…I doubt it was.Ā  And by the earnest expression onĀ Val’s face as he asked “Oh, you work in a hospital?”, I’m gonna venture a guess that “catching up on the soaps” is not on Val’s list of hobbies šŸ˜›

Heidi:Ā Both were hilarious…but I was yelling at my TV, saying “Chelsie, STOP talking, yer makin’ it worse”, while laughing at her. Ā Val I thought was just endearing…and for Kelly, humbling. šŸ˜€

Couple’s Schtick That is Most Likely To Get Old VERY Quickly: Sabrina & Louis reminding everyone that Sabrina was voted in and this season is “all about redemption”; (dis)honorable mention for Derek’s short jokes and Kelly & Val’s pattycaking

Courtney: I just think the short jokes are corny šŸ˜› And I guess I would just rather see Kelly & Val doing something other than pattycaking…something more…intimate.Ā  šŸ˜‰ Maybe if they were playing pattycake with their face.Ā  LOL šŸ˜› But the Sabrina & Louis “the viewers chose us to be here!” and “this is all about redemption because Sabrina left too early” poppycock is just beyond annoying at this point.Ā  If that’s their big reason why people should vote for them – then they must not be that special, because every week that any of the couples is sticking around, is a week they are being “chosen” by the viewers, since they’re obviously getting votes.Ā  And you want to talk about “redemption”? Gilles was narrowly beat out for the MBT by a mere 1%.Ā  Joey & Kirstie are both 2nd place finishers; Bristol finished 3rd in her season, and was pretty unpopular.Ā  Drew, Kelly, & Emmitt are all trying to prove that the earlier champions are every bit as good as the newer ones. I daresay any of the names I just mentioned have a greater hunger for “redemption” than a 7th place finisher who just couldn’t get the votes to stick around in season 5…and has been reminding us about it ever since.

Heidi:Ā Eh, I don’t mind the short jokes and Derek usually recognizes the shelf life of Ā joke in general. (I have to say, though, that theĀ harassmentĀ he got from one Shawn fan freak on Twitter was OTT – yo, Derek ain’t the one that looks bad here, nutjob!) Also didn’t mind the patty caking – was rather amazed by that, actually. Not sure I could do that without a shit ton of beer to relax me. Ā šŸ™‚ But the Sabrina crap is in a whole other league from those other two because we’ve been hearing for YEARS about her (not) shocking elimination. Talk about drinking game potential. Get the fuck over it already! I’m about ready to stick a pen in my eye. Ā Guess what kids – you were voted in over Carson and Kyle, NOT the rest of the cast. You better hope like hell that Team Sabrina is a lot bigger than I suspect it is. Read more..

DWTS “Who Wore it Better?” – The Pre-Season 15 All-Star Edition, Part I!

This season, we opted to do thingsĀ a bit differently – as we have with just about every other regular feature we do each season, since the format is a bit wacky, to say the least šŸ˜› First, we’ve divided WWIB into two parts – mainly to accomodate the fact that Kirstie & Maks’ and the 13th couple’s (who we now know to be Sabrina & Louis) promo photos have yet to be released, but also to buy us some time for the labor-intensive task of finding good pictures for some of these šŸ™‚ Secondly, we’ve included the couples’ promo photos from their original seasons for comparison as well.Ā Ā But as always, we’ve offered up ourĀ usualĀ snark commentary on each of the costumes, for your enjoyment šŸ˜Ž

Battle of the turquoise & black lace corset dress/Kelly & Alec vs. Kelly & Val:Ā  Kelly & Alec’s season 1 promo pic vs. Kelly & Val’s season 15 promo pic vs. Edyta in the season 9 pro tango demo

Courtney: The Iceman cometh! Wow, even Alec’s promo pic screams “I have no emotions” to me.Ā  And while Kelly is a bit better, I still wish she’d actually smile in her promo pics – the whole “smoldery non-smile” sheĀ does just seems like she’s trying too hard to me.Ā  And I’m probably the only one that feels this way, judging from some ofĀ everyone’s initial comments on the promo photos, but I’m not really all that wild about Kelly & Val’s pic…you’ll see I’m not much of a fan of the couples that went the “smoldery” route with their promo pix.Ā  As for the costume itself – gotta go with Edyta on this one.Ā  Granted, it’s hard to hold a candle to Edyta in pretty much ANY costume, but I think I like it better with a lace skirt, as opposed to a fringed one.Ā  And while I was cursing under my breath while putting this edition together about how BAD some of the costumes have gotten since Randall left, I thank my lucky stars we’re not still stuck with Designs to Shine, who costumed the first season. Can we say “tacky”? šŸ˜Æ

Heidi:Ā Val sez, “You…are sooo sexy.” To which Kelly sez, “You are sexy, but I am sleeping with my cousin’s best friend’s husband’s brother and am simply toying with you as a cover to hide our true looove….” That is my long winded way of saying, Kelly is a soap actress…they only doĀ smolder. Ā Sometimes well, sometimes not – and Val is a huge step up from Alec in terms of emotion and Kelly has evolved to smoldering with her mouth *closed*. šŸ™‚ The dress you ask? I go with Edyta sans fishnets. Ā Although I think it’s cuter in the shorter length.

The verdict: Just say no to soap opera smolder.Ā  Read more..

Dancing with the Stars 2012 Emmy Nominations!!

And the nominees are….

OUTSTANDING HOST

TOM BERGERON
Cat Deely
Phil Keogan
Ryan Seacrest
Betty White

Jeff Probst not nominated and he usually wins. I would say Tom or Cat were a shoe in, if not for Betty White.

OUTSTANDING REALITY PROGRAM

DANCING WITH THE STARS
So You Think You can Dance
The Amazing Race
Top Chef
Project Runway
The Voice

TAR wins this one every season.

OUTSTANDING CHOREOGRAPHY

Travis Wall, Without You (DWTS)
Stacey Tookey, SYTYCD
Christopher Scott, SYTYCD
Spencer Liff, SYTYCD
Joshua Bergnasse, Smash

I don’t know whether to rant about this now or save it for later. I KNEW when they had Travis on DWTS that our choreographers were going to get shut out of this category. I predicted it back when the show was on this last season. Let’s just say I’m pissed off at this nomination and I’m pissed off at this category – it is unbelievably slanted toward anything that is not ballroom. They didn’t even list the nomination ballots on the website like they did for everything else. I spent a long time looking for it.

OUTSTANDING HAIR STYLING FOR A MULTI CAMERA SERIES OR SPECIAL

DWTS for episode 1407 (season 14, week 7)

OUTSTANDING LIGHTING DESIGN FOR A VARIETY SERIES

DWTS for Episode 1307

OUTSTANDING MAKE UP FOR A MULTI CAMERA SERIES

DWTS for Episode 1307

OUTSTANDING TECHNICAL DIRECTION, CAMERAWORK, VIDEO CONTROL FOR A SERIES

DWTS for Episode 1410A

That one makes me chuckle a bit, considering how often Courtney and I put camera gaffes in our Cheesecake Awards. šŸ˜€

That was all the nominations I saw – now Vogue will go behind me and make sure I didn’t leave anything or anyone out. And look at the Choreo again, would ya?? I think it drove me temporarily insane and I might have missed something. šŸ™‚

UPDATE: Vogue here with some Emmy nomination reactions from Tom Bergeron, Travis Wall, and the Dancing With The Stars Make-Up Team….

Tom tweeted, “Probst will still find a way to win this thing!” He’s a crack up as always.

From ET, Travis Wall said, “I can’t believe that our dance company’s (Shaping Sound) first performance on TV got an Emmy nomination. I am elated! It’s amazing to have a nomination two years in a row but it’s surreal to have this nomination with my best friends!”

Also, from the Dancing With The Stasrs Make-up Team at facebook, they wrote: “Great news today! The Dancing with the Stars Makeup Team has been nominated for an Emmy Award!!! We hope to bring it home for a 2nd time. Please wish us luck!!!”

DWTS 14 End-of-Season Award Winners: What Was the Biggest Controversy?

Other responses:

All of the above/any combination of the above answers – 17 (Sorry guys, too many different combos to list them individually!)

Derek & Maria’s kiss – 1

William & that stupid running & sliding move in every single dance – 1 (Annoying, yes, but is it really a “controversy”, per se?)

Katherine’s “injury” – 1

Derek’s behavior – 1

Cheryl’s Emmy-worthy creativity *sarcasm* – 1

None – 1

Rock & Roll Week – 1

Overstating Maria’s injuries, ribsĀ NOT broken…hurt, yes, but not broken – 1

William wearing the same shirt in many different colors – 1 (Again, it’s annoying, but is it really controversial?)

Dance marathon – 1

Courtney: Again, it looks like we have several different interpretations of the term “controversy” here.Ā I guess the way I interpret it within the context of the show, a “controversy” is something that occured that caused a great deal of debate and dissenting opinions on the issue – but maybe some other people interpret it as something that justĀ really bugged them personally.Ā I guess I need to be a bit more specific in my explanation of next season’s awards, perhaps along with eliminating the write-in category šŸ˜› Anywho! I think the results are about right on the money – I found the most prolonged, contentious, polarizing issue of the season was the question of whether or not William was getting unfairly favored by the judges and/or the TPTB, and just the judges being highly subjective in their scoring across the board.Ā  I don’t think we’ve ever had a precedent for a situation like the one that unfolded this past season – I can’t recall a time in a past season where the judges were so blatantly displaying favoritism towards a certain contestant.Ā  Granted, there is always some degree of subjectivity, and the judges do tend to pick favorites each season, but I don’t think we’ve seen it before to the degree that we did this season.Ā  As for Jaleel’s behavior, the dance duel, & Cheryl’s behavior – yes, they all generated a great deal of debate and polarity in opinions, but perhaps weren’t as prolonged as the William/judges controversy.Ā  As for the trio dance – I know some of you are probably balking at the notion of it being “controversial”, but I seem to recall quite a few debates about which couples would pick which pros and how it would be advantageous to some and a disadvantage for others, so there was at least aĀ bit of controversy there.Ā  Especially on the topic of who would get Tristan šŸ˜›

Vogue: I think this poll was spot on as well. As much as I loved William himself and his dancing too, the pimping was over the top. I was patient about it at first and could understand the interest in him being he was a new sexy Latin star to hit the Hollywood scene, but, the hype and the manipulation from the producers and the judges scoring and then Cheryl herself out of control took it’s toll on a great many of fans. Sadder yet, was that William himself could see it too and it wasn’t something he welcomed. I really admired his humbleness through out it all which made me a fan. I wish I could say the same for Cheryl. I’ve lost a lot of respect for her that I once had. I was also outraged with Jaleel’s behavior. I was so glad when he was finally picked to go.

Heidi: I think the top three were the only real controversies – and they were doozies. The rest? Nah. Ā And the write ins?? Some people need a little reality check. Ā šŸ™‚ Ā Although I did snicker at the “emmy worthy creativity” one. šŸ™‚ Ā Every season there is someone who is the judges favorite – but it’s usually someone who is the best dancer. Not this season. This season they had their favorite….and he was also pimped to high hell at every opportunity by the show itself. It was quite ridiculous. Ā Now can we go to my favorite moment of the season? Carrie Ann’s mouth falling open when saidĀ controversialĀ dude took THIRD place. šŸ™‚ Ā Anyway, after a while it seemed to be a highly orchestrated dance (pardon the expression) between production and judges to make sure this guy went to the finals. Of course, they seemed determined to get Katherine there as well (and keep Donald away), but it was at a much higher level with Willy…and Katherine could really DANCE. Madness.

Maria Menounos’ Malibu Beach Party

And of course her former partner was there, looking all fit and tanned. Oddly, Terrell Owens was there as well. Hmmm….

Side note: I found this little gem while searching for news – Ā Per the Pueblo Chieftan:

Q: Is there anyone today who could become a dance team likeĀ Fred Astaire andĀ Ginger Rogers? ā€”Martin L., San Pedro, Calif.

A: ā€œDerek and Julianne Hough,ā€ says Adam Shankman, producer ofĀ Step Up Revolution (out July 27) and Julianneā€™sĀ Rock of Ages director. The siblings first found success on Dancing With the Stars. ā€œBoth are movie stars in the making,ā€ Shankman adds.
