DWTS Season 22 Contestant Antonio Brown First Celeb Voted Off “The Masked Singer”; Could More Former DWTS Contestants Be Behind the Masks?

Admittedly, when I saw ads for The Masked Singer on FOX, I didn’t pay it much mind because I thought it would be a one-and-done, mid-season flop. But given that the show premiered Wednesday night to HUGE numbers, I watched the premiere last night on Hulu…and I’ll admit, there is something oddly compelling about it. It’s no Game of Thrones, but there’s something about watching mystery celebs in ridiculous head-to-toe animal costumes singing well-known songs while judges Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, & DWTS season 10 champ Nicole Scherzinger hem and haw (and often poorly guess) about who they are that’s certainly entertaining.

So what’s this got to do with DWTS, you ask? Well, given that the first celeb voted off was DWTS season 22 contestant (and the inspiration for this blogger’s favorite DWTS hashtag, #ShoshannaWhatSheMissin) Antonio Brown, it stands to reason that other former DWTS contestants might be behind some of the masks as well.  And in the tradition of shows like DWTS, Celebrity Apprentice, and Celebrity Big Brother, you often see the same celebs making the rounds on these shows. Various clues have been given about each of the contestants, including their height (which DWTS fans make a habit of keeping tabs on), and even the costumes themselves supposedly have clues worked into them.  And some of these clues seem to sound an awful like some familiar faces from DWTS…shall we have a look at two former contestants likely hiding behind those masks?

“The Peacock”

Clues given: 5’9″, loves attention, first got onstage at age 5, your mom might have had a poster of him on her bedroom wall, part of a Vegas act, name-dropped Michael Jackson, petted a dog statue

Who I’m fairly certain it is: season 9 champ Donny Osmond

Why: Donny is the original DWTS attention fiend, pre-Alfonso. Singing voice sounds just like Donny, who has had a residency in Vegas for years. Teen idol from my mom’s era; had a hit called “Puppy Love”.  Loves to name-drop. Also, SHORT MAN SYNDROME

“The Lion”

Clues given: “Hollywood royalty”, “embracing vulnerabilities”, 5’6″, “my pride has many women in it”

Who I’m fairly certain it is: season 20 champ Rumer Willis

Why: Obviously the daughter of Bruce Willis & Demi Moore would be considered “Hollywood royalty”. Rumer’s 5’6″ – that I remember from covering season 20. She also talked at-length about her experiences with being bullied and overcoming her insecurities.  It was also pretty well-known that she had singing (*cough* and dancing…*cough*) experience, and she even performed her freestyle to a cover she sang of “Toxic”. Her family is pretty female-dominated – she’s one of three daughters.

And we already know that Antonio was “The Hippo”, but if you want to see his clues and performance, go ahead…

As for the other three contestants we saw this week, Tori Spelling is totally “The Unicorn”, and Terry Bradshaw is “The Deer”.  The only one I’m not feeling certain about is “The Monster” – a lot of folks on Twitter seem to be saying T-Pain, but I’m still feeling kinda “meh” on that one. Honestly, kinda shocked we haven’t seen all three on DWTS at this point…I know Terry’s been a rumor before.  Any bets on whether we see Tori on season 28? 😛

Are any of you watching the show? Thoughts? Guesses on the celebs? If enough of you are interested, I might be persuaded to cover this show regularly… 😉

PureDWTS Season 23 Cast Rumors & Watchout: Another Racing Driver/James Hinchcliffe, Maybe?

One of the perks of being a lifelong resident of Indianapolis is that you usually have a pretty good ear to the ground when it comes to the goings-on down at the racetrack – I have at least 5 friends whose jobs are directly related to racing, and anything even remotely interesting that happens at the track usually makes it to the local news (even a dog getting loose on the track and delaying practice for 15 minutes…true story).

Occasionally, this connection pays off – as it did a couple weeks ago, when a friend who works very closely with the racing industry (I won’t give any more detail than that, lest I inadvertently get this friend in trouble) mentioned to me in passing that DWTS had been shopping around to cast another racing driver for season 23. Said friend mentioned that they were looking at Indycar, and the name that he/she kept hearing was James Hinchcliffe’s.  Given that Hinch was spotted in the audience this past season (see below), I don’t think it’s entirely unbelievable that the show might be angling to cast him.  Interestingly, James also favorited/responded to some interesting tweets asking if he would do the show – including one of mine:

Pretty cool to be @dancingabc tonight for the live show! Where are you @heliocastroneves !?! #Indycar #DWTS

A photo posted by Conor Daly (@conordaly22) on

For those who aren’t familiar with Indycar or are asking “So why would DWTS cast him?”, let me give you a crash course (no pun intended…ok, maybe a little) in Hinch: he’s Canadian, he’s basically the face of Indycar right now, he has a podcast, he has his own beer, he was on Family Feud recently, and the dude’s hilarious.  Charisma for DAYS. Oh, he also almost died in a crash last year and has made a recovery that is nothing short of miraculous. And with Indycar experiencing a resurgence in popularity in the past year, while NASCAR continues to decline in viewership, and the with the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 making the news? He’s got relevance. So to recap: big personality? Check. Relevance? Check. Amazing backstory? Check.  Even if this is the extent of his dance ability heading into the show, who the hell even cares? I’d probably laugh my ass off just listening to him read the phone book. 😛

Schedule-wise, it might be a bit of a challenge at first – the Indycar season doesn’t end until September 18 (in Sears Point, California…not too much of a trek from L.A.), so his partner might have to do some traveling with him prior to the start of the season and for the first week of the season; interestingly enough, the penultimate race of the Indycar season is on September 4 in Watkins Glen, New York…last year’s fall cast announcement was on September 2 on GMA, in NYC. See what I’m getting at here? 😉 For what it’s worth, the 2007 Indycar season didn’t end until September 9, and the season 5 cast announcement was on August 29…so Helio was in a similar position and had to rehearse with Julianne concurrently with the Indycar season. Ditto for the All-Star season – cast was announced on July 27, Indycar season didn’t end until September 15, season 15 premiered on September 24. So a bit of overlap between the seasons doesn’t necessarily negate the possibility of him doing the show. It’s also worth mentioning that Michael Waltrip had quite a bit of overlap with the NASCAR season when he did season 19.

If, for whatever reason, they opt not to cast Hinch (or he declines), there’s still some other casting possibilities within Indycar – you might remember that Tony Kanaan was a rumor a few years back, and nothing really came of it; he’s still very much an Indycar fan favorite, and recently appeared on both American Ninja Warrior and Family Feud. Also noteworthy? Alexander Rossi, the winner of the 100th running of the Indy 500 and the first rookie to win the Indy 500 since Helio won it back in 2001 – I could see the show running with that buzzworthy fact.  Granted, I personally just don’t find either to be as interesting a casting as Hinch (though TK comes close), but they’re options nonetheless.

So what do you guys think? Do you think Hinch or another Indycar driver would be a good get for this season? Who would you like to see him paired with, if he is cast?

Wanya Morris Writes On His Experience On Dancing With The Stars, Encourages Everyone To Step Out Of Their Comfort Zone

The things that scare us, or we find most difficult, are what make us stronger and better people. ~Wanya Norris

Usually we don’t post on the celebrities after a season is over on Dancing With The Stars, but, we couldn’t help posting on Wanya Morris. He wrote a new blog for the Las Vegas Review Journal on his time and experience on Dancing With The Stars. He’s so thankful he danced. Read on to see why and how he encourages everyone to step out of their comfort zone and more.

I worked hard to perfect the final two routines. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but if it was going to be my last night, I wanted to make sure that it was my best performance yet for the fans. My final performances were memorable ones, and when all three judges held up 10’s, I was elated.

Although I didn’t make it to the finals, I wouldn’t have changed a thing! Not only did I try my best and worked as hard as I ever had, I also did something new, faced the challenge and got so much out of it.

The things that scare us, or we find most difficult, are what make us stronger and better people. I was out of shape and one of the older contestants, but my drive allowed me to persevere.

I now have some unbelievable friends and a new passion that I am continuing. I encourage all of you to step out of your comfort zone and do something you aren’t sure you can achieve. It could be one of the greatest experiences of your life.

For all the fans who have supported me over the years and voted every Monday night, I want to thank you. I appreciate every single one of you.

Carrie Ann Inaba Writes On How DWTS Season 22 Touched Her, An Open Letter

Carrie Ann Inaba has written her last blog of the season at Access Hollywood. She talks of why Dancing With The Stars Season 22 was her favorite and how touched she was by the contestants this season. So much so, she was moved to learn sign language. You can read the full blog at Access Hollywood. Below is her open letter “to anyone who wants to try something new but is afraid”….

To Anyone Who Wants to Try something New but is Afraid;

To all of you who have a desire, a dream, or a daring thought of doing something you have never done before, of trying something you wish you had done many years ago and may be afraid you are too old to do now.

To those of you who feel a tug in your heart when you watch someone dancing, singing, painting, volunteering, or reaching out to help when no one else will, because deep in your heart, you want to be that person…

To the shy souls that want to say hello to a neighbor they always see but have never learned his/her name, or to the successful business people who really just want to start their own small business and simplify their lives,

I offer you this: Life is a journey, your personal journey.

It is yours to explore your heart’s desires and your most secret dreams.

If you listen to the whispers of your heart, even if you think people may laugh or judge you, you will find yourself satisfied and you will give yourself joy.

For life is about growth and expanding, exploring the unknown, and pursuing your own bliss.

Start small, or go for it all.
But I urge you all to dare to live the life you want to live.
And maybe even one day, we will see you on Dancing with the Stars.

Have a beautiful summer and I hope to see you soon.

To all the Season 22 contestants, thank you for daring to dance with us. Your courage has inspired us all. I hope you have enjoyed and have been enriched by the journey. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work with you all, and to do something I love. Spread love wherever you can and I’ll see you next season! xoxo

— Carrie Ann Inaba
