Choreography with Cheryl and Maks!

Princess Heidi made an excellent point about my last post: The good, the bad, and the incredible hot choreography, stating that I was talking more about the execution than the actual choreography!  And I do agree…all the pros are phenomenal choreographers and it really is up to the celebrities to pull it off.  Therefore, when I talk about the choreography of the dances, I am referring to the technical aspect of how well the celebrities pull off the pros choreography!

THE GOOD
Season 8: Gilles Marini, Argentine Tango
Cheryl is one of my favorite choreographers on the show!  I think this dance clearly shows what an argentine tango is supposed to be :)  Slow then fast and always sexy!  Gilles did an amazing job playing the part and partnered Cheryl very well!

THE BAD
Season 8: Denise Richards, Samba
Maks is an amazing dancer and choreographer!  I’m also a big fan of Denise Richards so I was excited about this pairing!  However, Denise could never pick up the musicality of Maks’ choreography!  She doesn’t have any hip action and her footing was always one step behind Maks’!

THE INCREDIBLY HOT
Wade Robeson has got to be one of the greatest choreographers of all time!  I absolutely love this piece he created and we have some of SYTYCD alums!

What other dances are you guys interested in seeing!  Look for the next post on Monday or tweet me (JeanneSchrodt) with ideas :)

The Good, The Bad, and the INCREDIBLY HOT choreography!

Time for the good, the bad, and the incredibly hot!  However, I also want to know what you guys think are the best or most memorable dances, the worst dances, and the incredibly hot dances!

THE GOOD
Shawn Johnson: Season 8, Rumba
Shawn impressed me so much all season long but this dance really stood out to me.  The rumba is suppose to depict romance and a touch of sexiness.   The challenge Mark faced was Shawn being 17 but it was so tasteful and elegant!   The only thing I think Shawn could’ve done better is move her hips more but at 17 it’s such an awkward thing!  Over, the dance was beautiful :)

THE BAD
Holly Madison: Season 8, Samba
Poor Holly!  She so badly wanted to do amazing on this show but she just had no rthym.  This dance was very shift on Holly’s end…she tried to be sexy but thought about it to much!  Good effort but that’s about it!

INCREDIBLY HOT
I am a HUGE fan of Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Brian Friedman so I was very excited about this dance!  I love the electric aspect and the costumes to match!

DWTS Choreography…Technical breakdown!

I love when a celebrity performs a dance better than expected and I especially love when the choreography is something to remember! However, there are those times that a celebrity just cannot pick up a dance no matter how much practice time is given to them! So, until the new season starts on September 21st I’m going to post some of the most amazing dances since DWTS started, including the emmy nominated routine, and some of the worst dances that have been engraved in my mind!

In a previous post by Courtney, she listed the top 5 worst couple pairings so I have found dances from some of couples that truly shows that these pairings were not well thought out:

3 Train Wreck dances:

1: Season 2: Kenny Mayne and Andre Hale, Cha Cha
Kenny did more standing and walking than actually dancing! He was very heavy on his feet and needs to work on his hip movement…it is a latin dance!

2: Corky Ballas and Cloris Leachman: Season 7, cha cha
Oh Cloris! I loved watching her but she never had any technique…it was like a grandma at a club. But I do give her props on having fun with everything she did!

3: Steve Wozniak and Karina Smirnoff: Season 8, Samba
Steve tried really hard but he never got the feeling of the latin dance! He went through the moves but had no rthym. His worm was a good attempt but it wasn’t great by any means! And the ending was all over the place!

3 memorable dances!

1: Emmy nominated routine: Great Balls of Fire, Julianne and Derek Hough
technical perfection!

2: Stacy Keibler and Tony Dovolani: Season 2, Samba

3. Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke: Season 2, Paso Doble

More to come until September 21!!!!

DWTS Costumes…Sparkle and Shine!

Hey Everyone! I’m a new blogger for DWTS so I thought I’d let you guys know what to expect from my blogs :) I will be blogging about the costumes featured on this season and the choreography/technique of the dances and how well (or not so well) each couple performed them! Now that we have that out of the way let me get started!

I absolutely love the costumes that the celebs and pros wear on DWTS and I first wondered how all the costumes got sewn and fitted in time! I googled Randall Christensen, the head wardrobe designer, and found that he only has 3 1/2 days to get costumes made! This has got to be a crazy time during the first weeks of competition since there are so many couples! I also found this AMAZING youtube video interviewing Mr. Christensen about the process:

To me, what makes are great costume is a combination of:

  • Is the material used appropriate for the dance style?
  • Is the costume suited for the celeb and pro as a couple?
  • Does the style of the costume match the style of the dance?
  • Are the sparkle and shine elements right on for the costume or not quite there?
  • Are the accessories perfect for the costume or are they to much or to little?
  • Overall, does the costume compliment the celebrity to showcase their dance strengths instead of their dance weaknesses.

With that said…here are my top 5 favorite costumes and my top 5 train wrecks!

TOP 5 FAVORITES (Season 4 – Present):

  1. Chelsie Hightower and Ty Murray: Season 8

More Video from Shawn Johnson and Friends

Dancechica028 is our videographer of the day! :-) She caught this cute video of Corky and Shirley Ballas. More videos are posted on Pure Derek Hough, since they all have…Derek. ;-)

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Exclusive Pictures from Shawn Johnson and Friends!

Many, MANY thanks to Lisa, a new friend of Pure Derek Hough and Pure DWTS!  She took these great pictures and is very generously sharing them with us.

If you want to see Lisa’s other pictures, including some great ones of Derek with Mark and Derek with Chelsie and Cheryl visit Pure Derek Hough.

DWTS in Iowa – Pictures and Video

I found some video and pictures (and a review, and a blog) about the show last night in Iowa.  It sounds like it was a lot of fun – very jealous of the attendees. ;-)

Pictures courtesy of  Star 102.5!  I pasted a few of them below (gallery – click on the pic and then click again for full size):

Kurt from Star 102.5 also contributed a blog. Read the whole thing, but my favorite part is:

Then we saw Shawn, Mark, and Derek Hough. Then, Lacey Schwimmer walks into our area wearing some workout pants and her sports bra. Very nice! Apparently, dancing creates fantasic abs. Jennifer caught me looking, but I think I get a pass considering Derek and Mark apparently refuse to wear shirts backstage.

I’ve only found one set of videos for this show thus far, thanks to Blazing1010. I’ve copied a couple of them, below, but there are a total of 13 on his/her YouTube channel.

I also posted a video of Derek and Chelsie, and a video of Derek, Mark and Lacey doing a hip hop number on Pure Derek Hough.

DWTS in Iowa – Post Show Article

The Des Moines Register has a nice write up about the “Shawn Johnson and Friends” show tonight in Iowa. Here’s a short excerpt:

Johnson, who was greeted by a standing ovation, spoke to the crowd before the one-time only event began. “It’s great to be here,” she said.

Johnson shared the spotlight with dozens of her friends, including her “Dancing with the Stars” partner Mark Ballas. The evening started off with a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, with a moonwalk dance set to “Billie Jean,” followed by Johnson and Ballas performing the Cha Cha Cha to “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing).”

Season-eight competitor and actor Gilles Marini heated up the stage when he danced the salsa with his partner on the show, Cheryl Burke. Stuntman and funny guy Steve-O, along with dancer Lacey Schwimmer, performed the fox trot to Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.”

DWTS Iowa Style – the Gilles and Steve-O Edition

Hee. One thing I really enjoyed about this past season was how well the entire cast seemed to get along. Most of the Stars showed up at the Ballas Hough Band shows every tuesday, they all took part in the video Derek did…the list goes on. Then there’s cute pictures like this one from Gilles, which he tweeted from Iowa where he’s taking part in “Shawn Johnson and Friends“:

Steve-O and Gilles Marini

If one had a dirty mind…. :-)
