Despite what some of Calvin Johnson’s team mates say, Detroit Lions Coach Jim Caldwell says Calvin Johnson is a “rather smooth” dancer. Here is more from the Coach and Calvin from Freep.com.
Johnson retired in March, after nine seasons as one of the NFL’s most dominant players. He holds virtually every Lions receiving record, and Jones, a “Dancing with the Stars” fan, said that there might be some carryover skills that help Johnson in his reality competition.
“Maybe the footwork,” Jones said. “Maybe being in shape, used to working out, having to be conditioned to perform a routine. So there’s definitely some things that can pan out, but it’s a very different sport.”
Lions coach Jim Caldwell said Johnson looked “smooth” the few times he saw him on the dance floor at his wedding, but he allowed that “that was a controlled environment, so maybe (his former teammates) know more than I do.”
Still, Caldwell said he expects Johnson to shine when the cameras come on.
“I think he’ll be able to hold his own,” Caldwell said. “He’s been very, very good at everything else he’s done. I think he might surprise everybody.”

Vanilla Ice isn’t sure what his signature move will be yet on Dancing With The Stars Season 23, but, he’s ready for the challenge and some fun….and says “let’s dance”. lol He’s going to be funny. Be sure to listen to this fun interview here. Thanks to @DWTSGossip for the fun find.
ETA: You can watch an interview with vanilla at CBS12 too.
James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess held a chat today to talk all about Dancing With The Stars. Sharna says he has a chance to win. More below….
Don’t miss reading an interview with Rob Wade at TV Guide. He talks of how excited he is on the new cast and the pros who were brought back. He also gives some hints on the episodes coming (I love the idea of a Cirque de Soleil tie-in spectacular). Read on….
It should also be packed with special episodes, though Wade acknowledges that there needs to be a balance between spectacle and competition. But at least one real-world event pressured DWTS to do something it’s never done before.
Dancing With the Stars’ new cast features Olympians, a rapper and a loud-mouthed politician
“There’s a lot of [presidential] debates in the first few weeks of the season, so we’ve jumped around with our schedule a bit, which has left us in Week 3 with just a one-hour show instead of a two-hour show,” he says. “So we’ve had to create possibly one of the most impactful shows we’ve ever done. There will be 12 dances in one hour, the couples are going to have to face off against each other, so we’re going to pair them into six different powers. Never has more dancing been done in one hour of television!”
Additionally, Dancing With the Stars is working on a Cirque de Soleil tie-in spectacular, bringing in the Andrés Ruis Orchestra (though that still has to be confirmed), hoping to bring back the Showstoppers episode, tying in one episode with Halloween and bringing in plenty of guest judges that will be announced later.

This is such cool Insider report on Marilu Henner and Maureen McCormick. It shows interviews, behind the scenes of the title shoot with their partners, and more…
Just a few media tidbits to start us off. First, read E Online for some thoughts on the cast and when they meet/met their partners….
“Vanilla Ice hasn’t met his partner yet. He’s meeting [Witney Carson] Friday at his home in Florida,” a source shared with E! News. “He almost couldn’t do it, but Dancing With the Stars wasn’t an opportunity he wanted to pass up. He’s really happy and excited. He has some dancing in his background but he hasn’t really danced in years.”
In the weeks ahead, the “Ice Ice Baby” rapper will also continue his “I Love the 90’s” tour and the seventh season of The Vanilla Ice Project that films in Florida. Talk about multi-tasking.
Other contestants like Governor Rick Perry, Ryan Lochte, Amber Rose and Laurie Hernandez have been able to meet their professional partners. But that doesn’t mean they have a huge advantage.
“[Rick’s partner] Emma Slater didn’t even know she was doing the show this season until about two weeks ago so they are brand-new partners,” a source shared with E! News. The same could go for Ryan’s partner Cheryl Burke who “kept the fact that she was returning really close to the vest. She didn’t tell anyone.”
And before Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough and the rest of the judging panel can start delivering scores from the ballroom, some people are already speculating as to who could become a favorite and walk away with a mirror ball trophy.
“Val Chmerkovskiy is psyched. The gymnasts always go far and he thinks they have a really good shot at winning. Plus, Laurie is way too young for people to make romantic assumptions about them, which always drives him crazy,” an insider shared with E! News. “He hates being romantically linked to his partner. This will be more like his relationship with Zendaya. He had a great time with her.”

Gleb Savchenko and his partner Jana Kramer met for the first time yesterday and they are excited. Aren’t they a beautiful pairing? His former Strictly Come Dancer partner Anita Rani says he’ll work her “like a Russian bear” and that he will.
Also, below is a fun report from Access Hollywood and a pap video at the opening shoot Monday night….
Jake T Austin is working hard…

We’ve posted lots of updates on Derek Hough and Marilu Henner at Pure Derek Hough including their appearance on Extra yesterday, a bio, interviews, photos, and more. This interview made me laugh so hard. Watch it and see why when you get a chance.
Lastly, here’s a fun report on the cast from Today….
James Hinchcliffe talked with The Indy Channel today about his new gig on Dancing With The Stars. James talks of how he’s going to juggle both driving and dancing. He’s hoping to gain some dance skills (he gives himself a -5, lol) and do something fun and different. He’s a cutie. No wonder Court is a fan. To watch this fun report, see The Indy Channel.
Also, to learn some things you might not know on James including how he almost died in a fatal car crash last year, see People.
ETA: Thanks to Abby for the heads up on this….

ETA2: You can also read an interview with James at Beyond The Flag. Below is a take. Be sure to read the link for more. Thanks to DWTSGossip and Abby for the heads up.
“Obviously I’ve got a day job, and that’s first and foremost priority at the moment,” he told us. “The first two episodes [of DWTS] are going to be the biggest challenge scheduling-wise, but once we clear Sonoma and clear episode two, if I’ve made it that far and stay on the show, then we’ll have a much freer schedule and [I’ll] be able to dedicate 100 percent of myself to learning and improving and being competitive.
“But certainly up to that point, it’s going to be a challenge with the races that we have coming up and the travel involved and all that.”
“Today will be the first rehearsal session with Sharna, and we’ll do today and tomorrow,” he explained of what his schedule looks like. “Then obviously I’ve got to take off to my day job, and we’ll practice through the start of next week before the test in Sonoma and then over the weekend into the first show there.
“The real challenge will be show two, because I really only have Tuesday and Wednesday before I’ve got to take off to Sonoma for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and the next show is Monday,” he added. “The second show will be more difficult than the first if we get through there. We might have to do a little extra work in the days leading up to show one to already start preparing for week two.”
Sasha Farber and Tessa Jole talked to Access Hollywood about their new partnership on Dancing With The Stars. Are these two not adorable or what?! I have a feeling they will definitely “work it out”.
