We’re back with more Flashback Friday!! YAY! I really enjoy looking back at the show, and would love to hear some of the things you remember from each season! Also, I am only posting one video per couple, and I’m trying to get as much variety of dances as I can.
All three of our judges were back for Season 2. Also back was Tom Bergeron. It’s not DWTS without Tom. Harold Wheeler and his Orchestra also returned, along with Pro dancers Louis Van Amstel, Ashly DelGrosso, Edyta Sliwinska and Jonathan Roberts.
Lisa Canning, Tom’s co-host for season 1 was replaced by Samantha Harris. Pro dancers Charlotte Jorgensen and Alec Mazo did not return for season 2. New pro dancers for season 2 were Andrea Hale, Nick Kosovich, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Tony Dovolani, Cheryl Burke, and Anna Trebunskaya. Other changes was increasing the number of couples from 6 to 10, lengthening the show from 60 minutes to 90 minutes, and adding the Results Show.
KENNY MAYNE AND ANDREA HALE were the first couple eliminated, on January 6, 2006. They danced a cha cha, and here it is!
TATUM O’NEIL AND NICK KOSOVICH were the second couple eliminated, on January 13, 2006. They danced a waltz and a rumba. Here’s their waltz. Read more..
Since Season 20 will be a big 10 year anniversary for DWTS, I thought it would be a nice idea to take the time to look back on each of the past seasons, and see and discuss how the show evolved. We’ll do one season a week, and one dance from each of the contestants. If possible, I’ll try to find a pro dance from the season.
So here we are!
SEASON ONE premiered June 1, 2005 and ran for 6 weeks. with 6 stars competing. Harold Wheeler Orchestra and his singers provided the music, and we had 3 judges, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba. Tom Bergeron was our host, and his co-host number one was Lisa Canning.
TRISTA SUTTER and LOUIS VAN AMSTEL was the first couple eliminated on DWTS. They danced a waltz and a rumba, and left the show on June 8, 2005. Here’s their waltz.
EVANDER HOLYFIELD and EDYTA SLIWINSKA was the second couple eliminated, on June 15, 2005. They danced a cha cha, quickstep and a jive. Here’s their quickstep. Read more..
All the talk about freestyles actually had me go back and watch quite a few of the winners and losers to see what the couples have to live up to on Monday. It’s a rather daunting task, to create one that is really good and, just as important, MEMORABLE. If you subscribe to the Derek Hough school of thought, you want it to be remembered more than you want the MBT. Which of the couples will manage that Monday night?? A couple of them have really good track records, for sure.
Season 1 – it’s rather shocking to watch season 1’s freestyles and remember that they did ACTUAL ballroom. You’ll note that once the Hough Ballas Crowd came along, the bar on the freestyles rose considerably. This one was not bad, considering the time frame, but there were a lot of mis-steps in it. Pay particular attention to the judges and how mellow they are and non-dramatic. This was before they became invested in being the stars of the show. Read more..
Is this not precious? Pictured above is Edyta Sliwinska with she and Alec Mazo’s new baby. Today Edyta posted the picture above to her twitter account saying, “Our bundle of joy, born on Jan 4th! We are in love and as happy as can be!!!” We are happy for you too. Congratulations!!
ETA: Below is more on their new baby boy from People. I love the name they’ve chosen!!
Former Dancing with the Stars professionals Edyta Sliwinska and her husband Alec Mazo welcomed a son, Michael Alexander Mazo, on Saturday, Jan. 4, she confirms to PEOPLE.
“We are extremely happy and in love with him. So far it’s been the most amazing experience of my life,” Sliwinska, 32, tells PEOPLE.
“Even though I’ve been told how incredible it is to be a mom, I never imagined I would enjoy so much every minute spent with my little munchkin.”
More at People including a picture with all three of them. So adorable!!
It’s the off season and so we like to do fun things to keep us distracted while we wait for the next season of DWTS. Right before last season, one of our Pure DWTS Insiders suggested we do a list ranking the hottest DWTS pros. I thought it was a great idea, but didn’t think it was right to just publish a list based on my own preferences. Instead, I want to reach out to you to get an idea of how hot you think each DWTS pro is on a scale of 1-5.
I’ll regularly post 2 new pros for you to vote and comment on. Then, after posting all the pros, I’ll take all the data and publish a list of the hottest Male and Female Dancing with the Stars pros. Keep this in mind as you rate. There’s no need to start your ratings at 4 like they do on the show. Get the idea?
Be sure to browse plenty of the pictures of Alec and Anna so you can offer a fair rating. Yes, the above voting is for hot. Feel free to hash out the difference in hot, beautiful, elegant, sexy, etc etc etc in the comments.
Also, remember that this is just for fun and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Although quite frankly all of the dancers on DWTS are hot, just different degrees of hotness. So none of them really have anything to complain about.
Today, former Dancing With The Stars pro Edyta Sliwinska tweeted out an instagram of herself with news that she’s been keeping a secret and one that is “less than 2 lbs little”, People.com has now picked up the story. What’s more, they asked her about it.
Edyta Sliwinska and Alec Mazo, the former Dancing with the Stars professionals, are expecting their first child early next year, the couple confirm to PEOPLE.
“I’m due in January and we are having a boy,” Sliwinska, 32, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “We’ve been together for 13 years; married for six. We were both so ready for it and we’ve been planning on this for the past couple of years.”
Isn’t this awesome?!! From all of us at PureDWTS, congratulations Edyta and Alec!!
Dancing With The Stars Sharna Burgess had such a great time dancing for “Dancing Like The Pros” last week in Niagara Falls at the Fallsview Casino in Canada. At the time we reported about it, there wasn’t much out there except from Edyta Sliwinska at twitter. In case you don’t know, Edyta along with her husband Alec Mazo helped to put on the show. The two are former Dancing With The Stars pros. Along with Sharna, the full cast included Antonina Skobina, Denys Drozdyuk, Daniella Karagach, Joanna Pacitti, Paul Barris, Anna Rosh, Jean Marc Genereux, Artur Adamski, Laurence Bolduc, Jean-Philippe Milot, Alex Karaulov and Vlada Semenova. Dancing With The Stars Kym Johnson also helped to judge the event. Sharna danced with Paul Barris and ended up WINNING!! Below are some fun photos from Dancing Pros Facebook and Sharna’s twitter….
And that’s not all! We were able to ask Sharna a few questions about what it was like dancing for “Dancing With The Pros” and the upcoming new season of Dancing With The Stars. Below is the new interview. Enjoy and we thank Sharna and her publicist for helping us put this together.
Hey Sharna, tell us about your recent trip to Niagara Falls and what it was like dancing for “Dancing Like the Pros”? Was it your first trip to Niagara Falls? Did you get to visit Niagara Falls or do anything else while you are there?
Niagra falls was beautiful as always. Such incredible standing there not just hearing but feeling the weather and the power is possesses. I’ve been there once before while I was on tour, and it was still amazing the second time round.
There was no time to do anything while I was there, we were performing two shows a day at the falls view casino. Dancing like the pros is a show put together by DWTS alums Alec and Edyta. I love these two, great people, super talented and genuinely love what they do. Getting to know them was wonderful and being a part of their show was a lot of fun. Kym Johnson was there with us as a judge, and she was so good at it!! Future Dwts judge maybe I’m just putting it out there, right now she is way too special as a pro.
Are you excited about the new season of Dancing with the Stars coming up? Anyone you would love to see in the new cast of celebs or anyone you would love to dance with?
I’m super excited about this season!!! I’m so itching to get back in the ballroom and create some magic I’m already picking songs and themes and getting my head around some really cool group number concepts.
I would love to have Victor Cruz or John Stamos. But If I could shoot for the stars on my Dwts wish list it would totally be Hugh Hackman or Bradley Cooper :)))
See you all soon!! Well… Fingers crossed
Yes, FINGERS CROSSED!! We hope we see you back too, Sharna, and to see everything you have planned!! I love the idea of Kym Johnson being a judge for Dancing With The Stars too! And oh, Hugh Jackman! Can you imagine if he were to dance?!
Ok, now that I’ve finally worked up the motivation to start revealing the results, I’m gonna do this a bit out-of-order – mainly because I simply don’t have the patience right now to tally up some of the awards with HUNDREDS of write-in votes This season has definitely made me question whether to even include write-ins as an option in the future. But I digress – let’s start with an award where the results were pretty cut & dry:
Bristol – 6
Helio – 2
Kirstie – 1
None – 1
Courtney: No arguments here – prior to the start of the season, Kelly was one of the celebs that I thought would REALLLLLY struggle, given that she was probably the weakest of the DWTS returning champions, based on her performance in season 1. Apparently Alec just didn’t know how to tap into her potential back then, because she was definitely one of the stronger dancers this season! Maybe Kelly just had time to mature between season 1 and season 15, maybe it helped to have a partner that she could really connect with (and wasn’t an “Iceman”) – whatever it was, she definitely impressed me this season, as did Val…makes me wonder if he could be the next great choreographer on the show in Derek’s absence. I also feel a bit vindicated now, since I’ve always said that Alec probably wasn’t that great of a teacher – if he was truly that great, he would have been able to pull performances out of Kelly 8 years ago that were as good as some of the ones we saw in season 16. I think Shawn & Apolo also improved, albeit not as drastically as Kelly; Melissa improved a little bit, as there didn’t seem to be quite as many cheerleader moves this time around; I think Sabrina stayed about the same; and Gilles got worse. I’m guessing the 6 votes for Bristol came from 2 well-known Bristol trolls on different computers – because she was even trainwreckier this time than she was before
Vogue: I voted for Kelly as well in this category. From the beginning, she seemed intent on doing well and improving herself. She had something to prove and that she could dance with the best of them. Despite a busy ongoing schedule with General Hospital, she gave it her all and it showed with every week that passed. Both she and Val had a powerful passion. They couldn’t have been more suited for each other. He wanted to do well too and set a name for himself other than just being Mak’s little brother. She gave him the confidence to do that and they flew with it even with the odds stacked against them. I loved them and I too look forward to Val’s future on Dancing With The Stars.
Heidi: I actually don’t remember who I voted for in this category, but if I was voting now it would be for either Kelly or Shawn. Kelly for all the reasons already stated – as much as the showmance made me nauseous by the end, she still ended up much better than her original season. I also have high hopes for Val in terms of choreo – that he’s inspired by Derek and not, say, Tony. He is a musician, so he starts out ahead. He did a lot with Kelly and made her seem warmer than I suspect she might actually be. If he continues to look at what Derek did as cool and creative as opposed to “rule breaking”, he can be the next great choreographer on the show. Take notes, Tony and Louis. As for Shawn, she was like a different dancer with Derek. She inspired him to up his game and she was fearless – talk about two people who complimented each other. Derek just pushed and pushed and pushed and got her to not only up her dancing, but her emotional connection to the dance. Awesome.
This season, we opted to do things a bit differently – as we have with just about every other regular feature we do each season, since the format is a bit wacky, to say the least First, we’ve divided WWIB into two parts – mainly to accomodate the fact that Kirstie & Maks’ and the 13th couple’s (who we now know to be Sabrina & Louis) promo photos have yet to be released, but also to buy us some time for the labor-intensive task of finding good pictures for some of these Secondly, we’ve included the couples’ promo photos from their original seasons for comparison as well. But as always, we’ve offered up our usual snark commentary on each of the costumes, for your enjoyment
Battle of the turquoise & black lace corset dress/Kelly & Alec vs. Kelly & Val: Kelly & Alec’s season 1 promo pic vs. Kelly & Val’s season 15 promo pic vs. Edyta in the season 9 pro tango demo
Courtney: The Iceman cometh! Wow, even Alec’s promo pic screams “I have no emotions” to me. And while Kelly is a bit better, I still wish she’d actually smile in her promo pics – the whole “smoldery non-smile” she does just seems like she’s trying too hard to me. And I’m probably the only one that feels this way, judging from some of everyone’s initial comments on the promo photos, but I’m not really all that wild about Kelly & Val’s pic…you’ll see I’m not much of a fan of the couples that went the “smoldery” route with their promo pix. As for the costume itself – gotta go with Edyta on this one. Granted, it’s hard to hold a candle to Edyta in pretty much ANY costume, but I think I like it better with a lace skirt, as opposed to a fringed one. And while I was cursing under my breath while putting this edition together about how BAD some of the costumes have gotten since Randall left, I thank my lucky stars we’re not still stuck with Designs to Shine, who costumed the first season. Can we say “tacky”?
Heidi: Val sez, “You…are sooo sexy.” To which Kelly sez, “You are sexy, but I am sleeping with my cousin’s best friend’s husband’s brother and am simply toying with you as a cover to hide our true looove….” That is my long winded way of saying, Kelly is a soap actress…they only do smolder. Sometimes well, sometimes not – and Val is a huge step up from Alec in terms of emotion and Kelly has evolved to smoldering with her mouth *closed*. The dress you ask? I go with Edyta sans fishnets. Although I think it’s cuter in the shorter length.
The verdict: Just say no to soap opera smolder. Read more..
Ok, so for a NORMAL season, this is the time where I’d usually cull videos from YouTube that show our new crop of celebrities doing dance-related things in their past that may or may not help their performance on DWTS, and then Heidi, Vogue, & I would point & laugh and generally have a grand ol’ time offering our commentary But obviously, this season is not following that pattern – there’s not much point in looking at videos of Kirstie dancing around in the kitchen scene of Look Who’s Talking or Drew Lachey gyrating onstage with 98 Degrees when we already have footage of them dancing on DWTS…so why not take a look at some of their best & worst performances from their original seasons, and see how they stack up? In addition, I’ll try to add videos of any dancing the celebs have done SINCE their season, that may or may not help them this time around.
Today we’ll start with the ladies, and we’ll start at the very beginning: season 1, which Kelly Monaco won. For her best dance, I picked her freestyle:
And for her worst, I chose the waltz:
Ok, first thing that jumps out at me here: the bar has definitely been raised quite a bit since season 1 – the level of the dancing is much higher now than it was in Kelly’s season, which could pose some big problems for her. I’m always a bit reluctant to pick someone’s freestyle as their “best dance” (because I think freestyles are usually pretty universally-pleasing, since the couples can do whatever they want), but in this case, I feel like it actually had quite a bit of ballroom content and thus was more on-par with what she was capable of in a regular dance. With that being said – it’s still a pretty weak freestyle, when you look at the freestyles we’ve seen since season 1. Kelly’s getting off-time, missing steps, and generally looking pretty wobbly on her feet – it may have gotten a 30 back in season 1, but I’d be surprised if it would have gotten anything more than a 23 in a more current season…and I think she’d be lucky to even break into the 20’s during the all-star season, if it’s going to be as competitive as I think it is. As for her waltz – it was during the first week of the first season, so there was undoubtedly some major nerves at work and I think she just ended up very stiff & scared. And did I just see some pretty blatant lifts in there??? I don’t necessarily think it was bad…it just wasn’t very interesting to watch. But there isn’t going to be any room for nerves on this season, so Kelly’s going to have to overcome those pretty quickly if she wants to stick around.
So has Kelly been doing any dancing since season 1 wrapped that might help her this time around? Well…yes and no. She did a brief stint in the burlesque revue Peepshow in Vegas back in ’09, along with Mel B (WARNING: It’s slightly racy…avert your eyes if you’re offended by pole dancing, lingerie, and gyrations):
Ok, so it looks like Kelly didn’t do a TON of real dancing in Peepshow…seems like just a lot of gyrating suggestively and being a sexpot. So while it might not necessarily help her with her actual dancing, I do think it might help her stage presence in that it will help her evoke a more confident, sexy, smoldering character for dances like the rumba & Argentine tango.
Court’s verdict: All things considered, I think Kelly’s unfortunately one of the weaker contestants this season, and has got a lot of hard work ahead of her if she expects to stick around – the fact that there are several non-winners (Joey, Kirstie, Melissa, even Pam) on this season that are quite a bit better than Kelly in terms of dance skill tells me she’s got some tough competition. However, she’s also still young and in good shape, which could give her an edge over some of the older contestants.
What do you guys think? Does Kelly have the juice to go all the way, or will she flame out early?
