Dancing with the Stars 9 Week 3 Media

Lots of Media, with a bit of variety too!! Well, only a little. First up, E! News from last Monday:

E! News on the eliminated couples, Melissa Jaret Winokur as the correspondent:

Chuck Liddell on Entertainment Tonight

The fallout from Aaron being a bonehead, on Extra!! Dmitry – still not good on the communication front.

More from Extra – Ashley Hamilton is the special correspondent. Paula Abdul is weird. Watch for Derek holding her in place at one point, and keep an eye on Debi Mazar’s face in the background. 🙂

Extra again – Heh, Derek says “dry humping”.

The Insider – this show has a new, panel format that I think I kinda like. Mainly because of this segment – I don’t agree with the guy who is arguing for an age limit, but I like how he seems to “win” his argument. :::crickets:::

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. “Dancing” Athletes Grace the Stage (and other Media)

This one seems to stop abruptly for me, but I thought it was cool.

Access Hollywood with Aaron, Karina, Donny and Kym, and Ashley and Edyta:

Excerpts from People Online – Monday’s DWTS: What You Didn’t See:

Buff Daddy: While most people drop weight on Dancing, pro Tony Dovolani has been packing on the pounds — nearly 20 — since the end of season 8 in May. Dovolani, whose twins turned one earlier this month, tells PEOPLE he’s in training for a role in the upcoming independent film Pumping Up. Shooting stars in December and Dovolani has been working out every day. “I eat like a horse, five or six times a day, and I drink protein shakes, I eat protein bars,” he says. “Right now I’m 192. Usually I’m at 175.” In the movie, Dovolani plays “a character getting ready for a bodybuilding competition. He’s an Italian guy from Queens.”

Scaredy Cats: The show’s opening number was quite the grand entrance as the eight male pros descended from the ceiling on scaffolding. “I was scared wreckless,” Alec Mazo confesses. Even tough guy Maksim Chmerkovskiy couldn’t wait to get his feet firmly on the ground. “I did not like that at all, and Mark [Ballas] was shaking and rocking the [scaffolding],” Chmerkovskiy says. “I am so glad that is over. Never again.”

Excerpts from People Online – Tuesday’s DWTS: What You didn’t See:

Snack Attack: Since it was ladies’ night on the dance floor, the men were able to relax and watch the show. Sitting side-by-side, snowboarder Louis Vito and football pro Michael Irvin shared a bag of gummy worms. Even former politician Tom DeLay was spotted dropping a worm into his mouth. At one point, all the guys were munching on something. “Candy, gummy worms and peanut M&Ms, and cookies and Altoids,” says Vito of his evening snacks. “It’s like watching a movie. How can you watch a movie without something to eat?”

Say What?: The Grammy-award winning singer Macy Gray had everyone on their toes, even the producers. After her first turn on the dance floor, Gray was asked how she felt. “I feel like I just busted my cherry.” While viewers struggled to figure out what she said, the audience roared with laughter. Tom DeLay was spotted wiping away tears from laughing so hard. A source added that backstage was no different: “Everyone was laughing, from the designers to production assistants!”

MSNBC Talks about Ladies Night:

Natalie Coughlin isn’t quite a household name, but as an Olympic medalist in swimming, she’s at least athletic — and she’s paired with Alec Mazo, who’s been looking for a good partner ever since winning with Kelly Monaco in the first season of the show. Alec first worked to cure her of her tendency to grimace angrily while competing, then went on to teach her the salsa. At times, Natalie seemed to have the hang of it, but her hips aren’t quite built for Latin dancing just yet. She’s coordinated and athletic, but she still tends to look like she’s working a little too hard.

Singer Macy Gray is dancing with the lovely and frequently challenged Jonathan Roberts (who handled Marie Osmond’s fainting spell and Heather Mills’ missing leg), and it’s pretty clear that this is not the year things get easier for him. Roberts called Macy “a little bit eccentric” from the beginning, and indeed, she seemed as out of her element as anyone the show has ever featured. Macy managed to walk around the floor in time with the music when it came time for her “Viennese waltz,” but that was about it. Carrie Ann called the performance “beautiful in its own bizarre way,” which was clearly the strongest praise she could muster.

Model Joanna Krupa and past winner Derek Hough look like a great team when they’re standing in line waiting for the show to start — so how do they look in motion? In spite of wearing what appear to be pants made from Big Bird pelts, Joanna looked good dancing. Hers was the first salsa that looked genuinely sexy (her model appearance, of course, doesn’t hurt), and she definitely looks like a competitor to watch.

Last up was Louis van Amstel and Kelly Osbourne, who’s a naturally sympathetic figure, given her wacky family and her obvious insecurities about her looks, weight, and whether she’s got any sex appeal at all. In fact, Kelly explained that it was her eagerness to try something more feminine that led her to the show. Her natural fear that she’d be hopelessly clumsy did not come true at all: she turned out to have a lovely smile, plenty of grace, and much more natural ability than anyone (especially Kelly herself) expected. Looking like a likely fan favorite because she’s both talented and an underdog of sorts, Kelly hugged her wildly excited and weepy famous parents and received very nice praise from the judges. It was an obviously genuine moment, and precisely the kind of thing that keeps people tuning in to the show.

DWTS Season 9 – Entertainment News for September 21st through the 24th, 2009

I went though my Tivo and pulled off that which was recorded, and then I surfed the net. 🙂 No surprise, I got lots of stuff. First up, Melissa Rycroft’s story on GMA Monday morning.

The Local (LA) ABC Affiliate’s George Patacki (sp?):

Paparazzi Henry is on the case once again. This time he gets Tom Bergeron, in addition to several dancers. LOVE Tom. We also get Lacey, Melissa Joan Hart, Corky and Mark Ballas, Louis V, Chelsie and Aaron, among others.

E! News from 9-22-09 – the feature lots of different people, but of course Donny is always prominent. Shawn Johnson is their correspondent – very cute. 🙂

Entertainment Tonight – warning, they are using Marie all season as their representative. And of course they relentlessly pimp Donny. That whole “donny ripped out Kim’s extensions” thing – I wonder if that is where Derek got the hair? 🙂

All the celebs briefly, but a really cute bit with Debi Mazar and Maks (and Adrien Grenier from Entourage – hubba hubba).

There’s tons more – I’ll post it tomorrow. 🙂

Dancing with the Stars 9 – Week 1 Results Show

Lots of good stuff in this episode!  I still love the Lion King number, but that may be because that’s one of the shows I’ve not seen in it’s entirety.

I thought the Adam Carolla bit about the Men’s Pep Talk was just hilarious. Very well done by all. 🙂

The Patrick Swayze Tribute was beautifully done, however, I doubt I’ll get any argument when I say there is NO replacing the original. Farewell Patrick.

DWTS Week 1 Power Rankings, Part I – The Guys

Due to the unique nature of this season (with the guys performing on the first night and the girls performing on the second night), I’ve decided to rank the guys separately, then the girls, and then an “overall” if you will…I would just wait to do them all at once, but then what fun would it be without you guys discussing it while it’s still fresh in your minds? 🙂

Alright, I’m going to be as brief as I can…I still have House & CSI: Miami to watch!

1.) Donny & Kym – Donny really did knock it out of the park tonight.  While I don’t think he was technically as strong as Aaron or Mark, his footwork was clean, and of course, he played the best to the crowd. Kym definitely choreographed to his strengths – the Chicago-themed foxtrot was really a very clever choice.  He was also the strongest of the 4 in the salsa relay – while not as eye-catching as Louie & Chelsie or even Chuck & Anna, he had the best execution and showmanship.  And it’s likely his showmanship that will carry him straight through to the final…that, or the legion of screaming women in the audience!

2.) Aaron & Karina – Ok, I knew Aaron would be pretty good, but MAN – the kid even surprised me with some of the stuff he was pulling out! Definitely the strongest technically for me tonight – some of the hip action & arms I saw from him were truly amazing. He also had probably the highest degree of difficulty in his routines – his Viennese relay definitely had the most tricks (which executed very well).  He also comes across as a very likeable kid in the lead-ins – he has the same boyish charm that I think  made Cody Linley so endearing.  He does have one weakness, however: he doesn’t really let his face convey any sort of emotion while dancing.  Very deadpan – like he is really focusing hard on the task at hand.  I do see glimmers of “swagger” come through when he’s trying to be sexy, though 😉

3.) Louie & Chelsie – These two really pleasantly surprised me! First off, they are too cute for words – they’re this season’s “vertically challenged” couple (to quote Mia from SYTYCD this season, when referring to another adorable pocket-sized couple – Randi & Evan), plus they’re both young and energetic.  And Louie actually seemed to nail the “flow” of the foxtrot – all with a brilliant smile on his face.  He got to show of his athleticism in his salsa – while it might not go over well with Len, flashy tricks & stunts always seem to be a hit with the viewers.  I can see America keeping them around for awhile, for the simple reason that they’re just adorable – like Aaron, Louie seems to have the impish boy-next-door act down pat!

4.) Mark & Lacey – While Mark was technically stronger than Louie, I felt that his energy wasn’t quite as strong or endearing – like Aaron, I can see him having issues with showmanship because he gets so much into his own head, trying to really nail the technical aspects of the dance.  That said, Mark probably has the best combination of strength and agility of all the guys on the show – that, and he has awesome pecs.  And abs.  And arms.  And an awesome bone structure. And when the bulk of the voting public is female – that’s a good skill set to have 😉

5.) Michael & Anna – I fear that Anna has fallen into the trap of trying to add a lot of “filler” to their routines to try and conceal the fact that Michael is not a great dancer, rather than trying to help him improve.  Michael seems to have the opposite problem of Aaron & Mark – he is so much into the crowd interaction & “having fun” part of the dance that he tends to get a bit sloppy.  But man, is he fun to watch! And he & Anna seem to interact well during their practices – he’s definitely going to be the jokester of this bunch.  He has the same goofy energy that Warren Sapp had – but unfortunately, not the same level of skill.

6.) Tom & Cheryl – Yes, Tom was pretty bad.  But not nearly as bad as I expected him to be! What he lacked in technique (which was a lot) he made up for in energy & feeling…I actually enjoyed watching him dance, and found him to be (I can’t believe I’m saying this…*gulp*) rather charming, especially in the Viennese waltz relay.  The dude is 62 and he did a POWER SLIDE ACROSS THE FLOOR, PEOPLE!!! That takes guts, even if you’re young.  But alas, charm & energy can only carry you so far – and I don’t see Tom lasting any longer than week 3, tops.  He’s stiff, his footwork is sloppy, his shoulders are hunched, he can’t do the tricks that the younger competitors can do – and he’s still a disgraced politician.

7.) Chuck & Anna – Chuck maybe said a total of 20 words all night.  While he still may scare the crap outta me (and a good portion of America), I think it was Chuck who was quakin’ in his boots tonight – hence the intimidating silence, and overall lack of emotion.  His foxtrot was painful to watch – just as I feared, he is heavy on his feet, which results in rather stiff, stilted movement.  Having the fedora passed back & forth as a prop was cute, but I almost feel like it was just another thing for Chuck to worry about…he looked petrified every time it changed hands.  But man, Chuck certainly handled his woman during the salsa relay – his strength definitely showed every time he dipped, turned, and spun Anna.  Aaron & Louie might be the masters of acrobatics this season, but I think Chuck could easily outdo them both when it comes to lifts – which we don’t get to see until later in the competition 🙁 So unless he can pull out a smile (or really any kind of emotion) when he dances…I doubt we’ll be seeing those lifting abilities.

8.) Ashley & Edyta – These two were a non-event for me.  I am having a hard time remembering anything truly memorable they did, and I even took notes on all the performances! Ashley’s not great, but he wasn’t bad either – I think he actually had one of the better foxtrots of the night, as he seemed to really get the fluid motion of it.  His salsa was boring.  Period.  I have a strong feeling these two will be gone come Wednesday, for the simple reason that they got lost in the shuffle – nothing, good or bad, made them stand out.

Alright guys, let’s hear what you think…I’m off to enjoy the rest of fall premiere week! 🙂

All Male Pro Dance and Opening Introductions!

Found them on the web already – – posted large sizes at Pure Derek Hough. Smaller sizes are below.

ABC Interview Videos

Courtesy of  TV Grapevine.  These are the same videos (with bio page)  I uploaded the other day for Macy et al, but different couples. I believe they are in the process of uploading all of them. I’ve included a few, below. The TV Grapevine site is kinda hard to figure out (for me anyway) so this link takes you to Natalie, but the others are listed on the left hand side. This LINK takes you to the list of celebs they have bios for so far – which doesn’t seem to match the video list, even though the videos are also embedded there. Make sense? Yeah, me either. 🙂

ETA: I almost forgot to blow my own horn. 🙂 I was correct – the male pros are doing a pro dance on Monday night, the female pros a pro dance on Tuesday night – the reverse of when they dance with their partners. This is per Louis Van Amstel.  Should be very interesting. 😉

Natalie and Alec

Mark And Lacey

Ashley and Edyta

Maybe it’s just me, but Ashley and Natalie seem kinda…boring? Maybe it’s Alec and Edyta? I dunno something seems strange there. Or maybe everyone suffers in comparison to Mark Dacascos and Lacey. 🙂

Seattle Times on DWTS Season 9

I point out this article in The Seattle Times in particular because I found what they had to say about the teams rather amusing. 🙂   Here are a few excerpts:

Gather ’round, fellow “Dancing with the Stars” fans, and let us mourn: Gilles Marini is no longer on the show, and none of the new contestants are slinky Frenchmen.

Regardless, everyone’s favorite guilty-pleasure, ballroom-dancing-with-the-C-list reality show is back, to steal our Monday nights and remind us of some of the great mysteries of life: namely, sequined pants, orange spray-tans and Samantha Harris.

Aaron Carter

Who? 21-year-old pop singer, Backstreet Boy relative (brother to Nick Carter) and former reality-show participant (“House of Carters”).

Any hope? Sure; pop singers generally know how to move.

Partner: The fabulously named Karina Smirnoff, in her seventh season.

Ashley Hamilton

Who? Actor/musician, but better known for being George Hamilton’s son and Shannen Doherty’s momentary husband.

Any hope? Let’s hope he does better than his famously tan father did on the show (in Season 2).

Partner: The marvelously slinky and frequently near-naked Edyta Sliwinska.

My personal favorite – 😉

Joanna Krupa

Who? Model, best known for one of those “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” PETA campaigns.

Any hope? Um, who?

Partner: Hold the phone — she’s dancing with the marvelous Derek Hough.

Rehearsal Videos from ABC – Part II

These HAVE to be from the first week. Have to be.

Ashley and Edyta

Donny and Kym. Still annoying. 🙂

Aaron and Karina – I can’t decide. He’s either going to be really good…or a tool. 😉

Alec and Natalie. Totally not an Alec fan. Natalie seems like she might have potential though.

Tom and Cheryl. Chery, I love you, but Tom? Gag. How is it that he seems to make fun of gay people while dancing? Why is it that he seems to imply that any guy who dances must be gay? Nice. Only not.

Who will be the first to go on DWTS Season 9?

One week! Just a week left…finally! So today I’m gonna ask you who you think will go home first. But there’s a little catch…I only put 5 girls and 5 guys. That means 6 people didn’t make it to my list and the person you expect to be booted off first might not be on here. And if they aren’t I want to know.

And just so you know…I put these up in “no particular order” and randomly chose names. 🙂

I also wanted to give you the latest results for the last 2 polls.

Favorite Past Winner Poll

Shawn and Mark are still in the lead at 31% and the next couple behind them is Brooke and Derek at 21%.

The Dance You Are Most Excited to See Poll

The Argentean Tango is in the lead at 26% and the Paso Doble is 2nd at 19% with the Cha-Cha-Cha at 16%.

What do you think of these results? Do you agree or disagree? Let’s hear it…
