We haven’t heard too much on Dancing With The Stars Karina Smirnoff lately since she’s been in Russia doing a show and teaching, but, she’s very much out there. Pictured above is Val Chmerkovskiy And Anna Trebunskaya! The two dancing pros really brought the house down in Brooks, California last night in Ballroom With A Twist. According to fan Maria Pena, it was “such a fun show”. Maria took some wonderful photos of the entire night if you’d like to see them at her facebook page. Thanks Maria for sending!!
The official summer season of Ballroom With A Twist starts this weekend. Val Chmerkovskiy and Anna Treybunskaya will be dancing in Brooks, California at the Cache Creek Casino Resort. The Sacramento Bee interviewed Val about the show. He talks all about it below for how the show is more than just dancing. He also talks about Dancing With The Stars and being a violinist…
“This show is a fusion of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ alumni and finalists from ‘American Idol,’ ” Chmerkovskiy explained. “It’s hip-hop with a bit of a twist, bringing in some ballroom dancing. Somewhat into the show, we invite the audience to come on stage and it turns into a big dance party.
“Nobody feels intimidated,” he continued. “We don’t grab people and throw them on stage. We’ve never had a problem, believe me, getting people to participate. The group that comes on stage is clearly dominated by women, but there’s a mix. The audience is so comfortable by that time because we work hard to build a relationship.”
But the show is more than just dancing, Chmerkovskiy said.
“Another twist is a Q and A we have at the end of the show,” he said. “I am enjoying these shows immensely and the venues in which I’ve performed. I’ve never had such a privilege before.”
Chmerkovskiy has been with “Dancing With the Stars” through many changes, a significant one last year being the dropping of the live orchestra, which stirred a controversy among loyalists.
“I was sad, of course,” Chmerkovskiy said of the change. “There’s a beauty in live music that can never be substituted by electronics. But there’s also another side. Pop music changes so much there are sounds that can’t be replicated by live musicians, and last year, I think, was the best season we had music-wise.”
Chmerkovskiy knows more about music than just how to dance to it. He’s also a violinist, which he describes as his “first passion.” He took up the instrument when he was 5 years old in Odessa, Ukraine.
“I took it very seriously until I became a concert master of a youth orchestra when I was 17 or 18,” he said. “Then my teacher moved to San Francisco, and once he was gone, I lost it. Without practice, my skill level fell. I don’t play it with any seriousness now.”
The summer dance tours are heating up! Derek and Julianne Hough’s MOVE Live On Tour is about to begin. Also, “Ballroom With A Twist” is gearing up for it’s summer run as well. Scott Stander, the producer of “Ballroom With A Twist“, tells us the show “is going great guns!” He also tells us they have a “very exciting schedule this year and some shows are already SOLD OUT”! He also informs us of all the pro dancers from Dancing With The Stars for who will be performing. He also tells us Maks and Val will be hosting some shows as well as performing. Here is more from Scott…

What a fun new interview with Dancing With The Stars Tristan MacManus. He and Kym Johnson are out there dancing up a storm in the current run of Ballroom With A Twist. He took time out to talk about it with News Press Now. He puts it all into perspective just perfectly for what this show is about. I can’t rave on it enough. Our schedule has recently been updated. Be sure to see this link for dates and ticket information, etc. Be sure you are following Ballroom With A Twist Facebook too. Things are heating up for the summer season as Gleb Savchenko told us too last week.
“I assumed that I’d come in and do a little bit of dancing, but as it turns out, we host the show,” MacManus says with a laugh.
MacManus quickly became an audience favorite and a great co-host. The friendly Irishman frequently gets the crowd involved, and he really lets them open up during revamped Q&A sessions.
“Over time, I’ve kind of gone a bit rogue with it,” MacManus laughs. “It used to be scripted out what we’d ask each other, and we’d tell them what we’d assume they’d want to know. Now, the audience can shout out any question they want to know the answer to. I find it more fun that way and people seem to appreciate the interaction more.”
As far as dancing is concerned, MacManus is quick to glaze over his portions of the show and pour praise on its other acts. In addition to performances by MacManus and Johnson, “Ballroom With a Twist” features numbers by Jonathan “Legacy” Perez, Randi Lynn Strong and Jonathan Platero of “So You Think You Can Dance” set to vocal performances by former “American Idol” contestants Gina Glocksen and Von Smith.
One of the greatest crowd-pleasers of the evening, MacManus says, is a scintillating contemporary dance routine by the “So You Think You Can Dance” trio set to Glocksen’s rendition of “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles. He adds that the Missouri Theater audience shouldn’t blink when Perez showcases his impressive B-boy stylings.
“He spins on his head an awful lot,” MacManus says.
The professional squad runs the gamut of dance styles throughout the night, dabbling in the samba, the rumba, the waltz, the foxtrot, the quickstep, the jive and even a little bit of fusion. While the smaller routines are choreographed by the dancers themselves, MacManus says van Amstel’s signature touches can be seen throughout the large group numbers.
“There’s very ‘Louie’ numbers in there,” he says. “You can see a lot of Louie-esque movements. He loves very intricate choreography and a lot of really fast, double-time stuff, and you can see that influence in the show.”
“Sometimes, people assume that Kym and I are really good because we’re on the TV show, but the chorus numbers are great,” he adds. “I think people will really enjoy them and be surprised by them.”
While “Ballroom With a Twist” consistently brings in fans of “Dancing With the Stars,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and “American Idol,” MacManus says the TV shows just don’t compare with the intimacy of the theater. On May 1, the audience will get an up-close glimpse at the talent, the athleticism and the colorful spectacle that makes those primetime programs a hit.
“Once you see the live show,” he says, “you’ll appreciate singing or dancing more than you’ll appreciate the TV shows.”

The show’s hosts, Johnson and McManus, injected a bit of light-hearted humor into the evening, inviting the audience to ask them questions.
“I imagined myself with George Clooney,” Johnson said in response to a question as to how her dance partners were selected, “but I got Jerry Springer.”
She went on to add that Springer turned out to be a great dance partner and she had a lot of fun with him.Johnson and McManus also led the audience in a group dance session, cheering and encouraging everyone to get out of their seats and shimmy to the beat.
But if applause was any indication, the evening’s mega star clearly was Jonathan “Legacy” Perez, who captivated and awed with his gymnastic, gravity defying break dancing moves.Indeed, ballroom dance is alive and well, but with a few contemporary tweaks. These twists provided enough oomph to satisfy audiences of all ages and leave them on their feet and cheering for more.
By the looks of it, the Ballroom With A Twist show in Billings, Montana last night was a show stopper. If you visit Alberta Bair Theater Facebook and Dmitry Dream Team, you can view loads of new photos of Chelsie Hightower and Dmitry Chaplin rehearsing and then dancing in the show. They also answered questions from fans. Picture below is of Chelsie and Dmitry pictured in Billings courtesy of @ErinWaldorf at twitter. Looks like they were prepared and dressed warmly. Good thing!!
Wyoming News interviewed Dancing With The Stars Sharna Burgess about the “Ballroom With A twist” show coming up in Cheyenne, Wyoming February 1st. She talks of why the show is a “beautiful experience” for how unique it is for fans and herself. Below is more. Be sure to read more at the link. Also, if you haven’t read our new interview with Gleb Savchenko, be sure you do as he talks a little on the show as well other fun things in getting to know him. Here’s to Saturday Night, Gleb and Sharna!!
“It is a beautiful experience to perform one night to a live audience. Once that show and that moment are over, it’s gone, and that makes it very special,” she said.
Burgess will be joined by fellow “Dancing With The Stars” coach Gleb Savchenko and an all-star cast that includes performers from “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance.” It all comes together for a night of different styles and music that Burgess said gets everyone out of their seat.
“The show is so unique. It brings competitive pros from all over and mixes them up. We perform everything from hip-hop to waltzes, samba and contemporary,” she said.
Burgess is originally from Australia but was working on Broadway before being discovered by “Dancing With the Stars.” An accomplished choreographer, she appeared on the series twice, first with comedian Andy Dick and later with former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson.
Burgess will be performing two solo numbers as well as a few with a group during the show.
She said she was looking forward to dancing with other professionals who loved the craft as much as she does. She said it was a whole new set of challenges and excitement from her role on TV.
“We did judge dance numbers, which were great, and I love teaching, whether that is celebrities or anyone else,” she said. “But I know the cast on this tour really well, and I can’t wait to get out there with them.”
In addition to the professional dance numbers, Burgess said there would be audience participation sections as well.
“We go around and talk with people and call them up on stage, but even if that doesn’t happen for you, I bet you are going to be dancing in your seat along with us,” she said.
