PureDWTS Season 22, Week 8 – Power Rankings

*shaking head* Still trying to reconcile the fact that Ginger is getting heaped with praise and given perfect scores, when her dances are about as exciting to me as watching paint dry/water boil/grass grow/British Parliamentary proceedings/etc. Yes, I know she’s a company gal; but I still don’t really understand what the benefit would be to DWTS to push her as hard as they have been. Are they changing narratives in the 11th hour, and gunning for a 2nd MBT for Val after all? Are they trying to keep the GMA casting pool fruitful for future seasons? Is this image rehab for Val the social media sociopath? Or was last night just part of the ruse – that maybe Ginger isn’t finale bound after all, and they were just giving her a nice send-off? My head spins trying to make sense of it. The grim reality is, though, that tonight’s tongue bath of Ginger may have dashed our hopes of a Nyle/Wanya/Paige finale – and we may see one of those three heading home in next week’s double elim instead of advancing to the finale, despite the fact that those 3 have been the most consistent and entertaining this season.  Buckle in, kids – next week is probably going to hurt.

I love how they touted the Judge’s Challenge (or whatever the hell they were calling it) as a “brand new dance” – bitch please, that was just a combo of the dance duels from season 18, the judge’s challenge from season 20, and the “America scores” fiasco from season 21. Three shitshows rolled into one, for your viewing pleasure.  The scores ended up being a complete cop-out, though, with each dance receiving the same score – and while I saw a lot of folks up in arms about it, I have to say I was a tad relieved; I don’t think any of the 3 dances really passed muster, and each had their own set of faults to contend with.  But giving them all the same score does two things: it makes the margins much closer, so it’s easier for someone at the bottom of the leaderboard (read: WANYA) to claw their way outta the bottom two; and it basically just throws it back to the fans…he or she with the most votes, advances, with slightly less power given to potentially skewed judges’ scores.  The judges’ dance didn’t really help anyone (except maybe Wanya, in a roundabout kinda way), but it also didn’t really hurt anyone, either. It’s pretty much all on the fans, at this point – the second dance just leveled the playing field a bit.

As for Jodie – she had a good run, and she went out on a high note; Keo probably grew more in this season than he has in all 3 of his previous seasons combined.  I’d call that a win for both, and for what it’s worth, Jodie actually seemed a tad relieved to be heading home.  I think she had wanted to do the show for quite some time, and unfortunately she got cast on a season where the competition was unusually fierce.  On a more “normal” season, I think she would have EASILY made the finale; but I think the pressure really got to her this season, both in terms of trying to do well and trying to emotionally support her partner.  And hey, it dovetailed nicely into her starting filming for season 2 of Fuller House today 🙂 And also for what it’s worth – I think Keo ended up being the right kind of partner for her.  I think she was too emotionally fragile to deal with a critic like Val or an Artem week after week, she was too tall for Sasha, and I can’t imagine anyone else partnering Paige than Mark.  It worked out, and hopefully Keo can come back next season as a more seasoned pro. Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 8 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

Well, Week 8 and more weirdness to take us into the semi-finals. So, the couples are split into teams of two and each team gets a judge. :::sigh::: Judges choose the dance and the song. One would think they would pick appropriately, but I’m not going to hold my breath. I believe that’s all we know right now…except for the pairs at the bottom of the page. These came from a variety of interviews and other sources.

ETA: Vogue here. Today on Kelly & Michael, Carrie Ann said she has Antonio/Sharna and Paige/Mark for her team. She is creating something “athletic” for them. More in this post.

ETA2: Thanks to Kennedy for the heads up to look at the DancingABC Instagram. If it’s not Panic at the Disco, then that account is trolling. 🙂

ETA3: The DWTS instagram strikes again. Any guess on what dance style Jodie will be doing to that song?

ETA4: All the songs and dances thanks to the ABC press release (via DWTSGossip).

ETA5: Song and Dance up date for Carrie Ann’s Team below via her instagram. And I sure hope they aren’t copying Derek Hough’s new dance art project with this. ~Vogue

ETA6: Thanks to everyone who has been telling me that Ginger and Wanya have samba – I’ve been out having a life and not surprisingly it involved booze. 🙂 ~Heidi

ETA7: A few updates below thanks to Peta’s twitter and Instagram! Thanks to everyone who sent the heads up. ~Vogue

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Julianne Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli Returning As Judges On Dancing With The Stars

Not only do we have an update for the Pro Watch (SEE HERE!), Executive Producer Rob Wade has confirmed to E Online that Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough, and Bruno Tonioli are returning as judges.

While DWTS had yet to finalize its cast when we spoke with showrunner Rob Wade, he told us fans could expect to see most of their favorites return for season 21. “I don’t think the cast will be much different than the one we’ve had the last couple of seasons,” he said.

Still, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any changes. So who’s definitely in and who might be out when the reality hit returns on Sept. 14?

The Judges: While Julianne Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli are all definitely returning to their seats at the judge’s table, the jury is still out on head judge Len Goodman’s involvement. (Goodman had previously said he was leaving the show prior to season 20, but then back-tracked.)

“It’s been back and forth the last year. I said to him, look, see how you feel,” told us. “I’m waiting. He’s in England, he’s working. I think there’s a good chance he’s not going to back for some of the shows…We’ll see where he lands, we’ll see how his health is, what he wants to do. But whatever happens this season, whether he comes back for some or none, the following season…I’m sure he’d be back for.”

For now, the show is once again looking at having some big names stop by to fill in for Goodman, with Wade confirming, “We’re looking at guest judges.”

Also, Val wants another mirror ball…

And fans shouldn’t expect Val Chmervoskiy to rest on his recent win with Rumer Willis, as the show’s casting director Deena Katz told us, “Three days after he won, he texted me like, ‘Babe, I need another one.’ I was like, ‘You just had one!’ And he’s like, ‘I need to do it again!'”

So yes, expect Val to return as well. (He even called and left a voicemail for Wade as we were speaking. No joke!)

EEk! More at E Online.

Is the New Replacement Judge For Dancing With The Stars Season 21 “Michael Wentink’?

Take it for what you will and we’re not sure what’s what, but we’re hearing from the #Dancevine via “a very good source” that the new judge replacement on Dancing With The Stars is going to be Michael Wentink from South Africa. Also, the judge who is being replaced is not Len Goodman like many suspected, but, Bruno Tonioli instead.

To read about Michael Wentink and his dance history, see this link. As said, we’re not sure what’s up, so take this news for what you will. Also, we’ve never used this source before, but, it seems reliable.

ETA: Heidi here to say…is it possible that both Len and Bruno are being replaced?? We’re not sure…just reporting what we’ve heard.

ETA2: DWTSGossip says that she’s 99% sure that Tony is replacing Len. I’m torn because in the last three seasons or so it’s been quite clear that manipulation rules the day, so in that case the judges shouldn’t matter. But maybe now that their main tour guy has a trophy they’ll dial it back a bit and let nature and dancing take it’s course? ~Heidi

PureDWTS Season 21 POLL: Who Do You Think the New Judge Will Be?

DWTSGossip dropped this interesting tidbit yesterday:

newjudge

Which seems to point to Len finally bowing out as head judge, and some new blood being brought in to round out the panel.  All signs seem to point to a male judge (not sure I could handle a panel of Carrie Ann “I Score with My Vagina, Not My Brain” Inaba, Bruno the Flamboyant, and Julianne, who can be a bit hit-or-miss), and a lot of folks seem to think it’s Tony – likely because he expressed interest in the position in an interview recently. Others are throwing out Louis & Maks’ names, and yet others are thinking it’s someone different altogether – I fall in the latter, as my gut is telling me that DWTS might borrow from another country’s version of the show and tap Jean Marc Genereaux from Danse avec les Stars in France (and DWTSGossip did mention that he/she had heard that DWTS France “would be involved in some way”).  I think there’s also a possibility that DWTS may try to “borrow” one of the ballroom choreographers from SYTYCD (Jean Marc or Tony Meredith fit the bill), or we might see Corky’s name thrown back in the mix. I do think the new judge will likely be someone who specializes in ballroom, though, as Len’s shoes are big ones to fill in terms of ballroom experience.

So assuming all of this is true – who do you guys think the new judge might be, and why? Tell us in the poll and the comments!

PureDWTS: The Pros, The Judges, & Their (Sometimes Embarrassing) Music Video Pasts!

Because it’s summer and there’s not much else DWTS-related to talk about – why not get a blast from the past and take a look at what some of our pros and judges do when they’re not performing on the show? And in this case, the activity in question is appearing in music videos – with varying results.  Some of them are pretty cool, others are blink-and-you-miss-it cameos, and some…should probably stay buried forever 🙂 Let’s check it out… Read more..

Sharna Burgess Writes On Her DWTS Journey With Noah Galloway, Thanks Fans For Their Support

Sharna Burgess has written a last blog for Dancing With The Stars Season 20. She and Noah may not have won the Mirror Ball, but, she feels they won in another way. Sharna also thanks fans for their support. Below is more from Closer Weekly.

We may not have received the Mirror Ball Trophy, but Noah and I won this competition in so many other ways! He inspired me every minute of our journey together, and I’m so thankful he trusted me to tell his inspiring story through dance.

It takes an extremely brave individual to overcome what Noah has gone through. Noah gave me his all on the dance floor each and every week, and I could not be more proud of him. He pushed me creatively and it has been incredible to choreograph his routines. Noah is and will always be my hero.

Thank you to our Team Shway fans for your support throughout this DWTS season! We are beyond grateful for your part in our journey and adore each and every one of you! I hope to see you at my newest venture, Dance Fuzion, a three-day weekend dance convention that gives people from all experience levels the opportunity to learn from choreographers and celebrity dancers from around the world. Much love!

Awww, I love her so much and what an unforgettable pairing not only for their inspiration, but, for their amazing lines and lifts. To read Sharna’s last blog of the season in full, see Closer Weekly.
