Because it’s summer and there’s not much else DWTS-related to talk about – why not get a blast from the past and take a look at what some of our pros and judges do when they’re not performing on the show? And in this case, the activity in question is appearing in music videos – with varying results. Some of them are pretty cool, others are blink-and-you-miss-it cameos, and some…should probably stay buried forever Let’s check it out… Read more..
We have discussed “shippers” many times on this site and Courtney had talked about doing a post about them. I responded that I would take the “anti-shipper” view. Considering the two people who are at the top of the leaderboard this season, I figured it was a good time to post it.
What is a shipper? Well, a shipper is someone who is invested in the romantic relationship of two people who are on TV. More carefully defined, it is a person who wants two characters to get together and/or shows support for two characters already together. This started in the X-Files fandom and was originally limited to fictional programs. Of course, back then there wasn’t “reality” TV like there is now. I was heavily involved in the X-Files fandom and that, I must say, was back when shippers were fun. At first. But I digress.
I have no real problem with the casual observation that two people look hot together. Or the observation that it seems OBVIOUS that they’re knocking boots outside the dance studio. Or even the observation that the babies would be so pretty. Especially when there seems to be some evidence that it is true. I think this is relatively normal behavior. But I also don’t think this is really “shipping” as it is defined nowadays. I think it’s speculation, and usually harmless. I would even go so far as saying, when limited to FICTIONAL characters, it can be fun, in its light hearted, romance novel, fan fiction form. We’ll talk about slash another time. I don’t want to make John’s delicate sensibilities catch on fire or anything. 😀 But as long as it stays just for fun and an OCCASIONAL past time, no harm no foul. Read more..
Just a little update on Dancing With The Stars Season 16 champs Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough. According to Pure Derek Hough via Ashley Mann On Music Row, the duo filmed a new music video for Kellie’s new single “Someone Somewhere Tonight” in Nashville this past week. It’s not confirmed whether they will be dancing in the video yet, but, a lot of their fans (including myself) are hoping so. This isn’t Derek’s first music video. For those that don’t know, Derek also choreographed and danced in Cheryl Cole’s “Parachute” video (one of my all time favorite music videos ever!) . Remember THIS?
Oh, my heart is beating really fast!! 😀 Let’s hope Kellie’s new video is released soon!! Be sure to read more at Pure Derek Hough!!!
Heidi: Thanks, Vogue!! Yeah, I’m hoping Ashley is right AND I’m hoping there’s dancing. But another possibility is that he choreographed/directed or something like that. He really seems to be getting into the directing/production side of things which is a rather natural extension of being a stellar choreographer. Whatever it is, I can’t wait to see!!
How ’bout a brief little pre-show round-up, eh?
This was the 2nd most searched term leading to PureDWTS the past 2 weeks, second only to “pure dwts”. Rumor has it Vogue has a post in the works profiling him…so stay tuned 😉 In the meantime, you can catch Tristan & Peta’s profiles, if you missed them.
Len Goodman who do you think you are
I’m not Len, but I’d venture a guess he’d answer with “Len f*cking Goodman, bitches.” I’m kidding…sort of 😉 But for those of you unfamiliar, Who Do You Think You Are? is actually a pretty cool television show that helps celebrities trace their lineage and learn about their ancestors. Len is actually featured on the current season of the UK version, and his episode (which airs on October 5 on BBC) shows him learning about his great-great grandfather, Wincenty Sosnowski, who was from Poland and actually fought in the anti-tsarist November Uprising and was subsequently awarded with the highest Polish military honor for his heroism. Vogue did a brief teaser post back in March about Len’s appearance on the show. If you get a chance, I highly recommend trying to catch the American version of the show, which airs on Friday nights on NBC – the bf and I caught a re-run of Lionel Ritchie episode the other night and were downright fascinated. So fascinated, in fact, that we started researching our own heritage – and I came to find out that my maternal great-grandmother was one of the first female pharmacists in the state of Indiana, and I’m actually 1/64 Trinidadian Pretty cool, if you ask me.
Is Lacey Schwimmer coming back to DWTS?
Ummmm yep, I’d say so…since she’s paired with Chaz & all. But there was some question about whether she’d take a season off to “focus on her music career” *snicker*, so I guess it’s a valid question.
Dancing with the Stars not practicing
My spidey sense tells me that 2 male celebs this season seem to have an aversion to practicing…and coincidentally, their names are only one letter apart…
Why is Louis/Louise Van Amstel not on season 13?
Because he’s pocket-sized and they couldn’t get Thumbelina or Thelma to sign on this season.
Are Derek Hough & Cheryl Burke dating?
No. Wrong Cheryl. Try Cole. And a loose definition of “dating”.
Did Mark Ballas win an Emmy?/Is Mark Ballas growing his hair back?
No./It appears so. See Vogue’s Emmy post for further detail.
Susan Lucci naked
Yes kids, the SERU is back after about a 2 month absence 😀 Why, you ask? Because there simply wasn’t enough traffic to the site prior to now to generate enough truly interesting search terms…but now I’ve got search terms aplenty to entertain you with 😉 ONWARD!!!
Melissa Gilbert divorce
She may not have actually been cast on DWTS this season, but you guys are still curious about her Anywho! Melissa officially filed for divorce from her husband Bruce Boxleitner (the guy who played Tron in the original Tron), on August 22, after 16 years of marriage. They had been separated since March of this year. What’s funny to me is the story of how they met – apparently they were introduced by Bruce’s ex-wife, only weeks after Melissa’s divorce from her first husband was finalized. Allegedly Melissa had met Bruce when she was a teenager and confessed to having a picture of him in her locker, but he ignored her at the time, since she was much younger than he was; after being reintroduced, they started dating on and off, got engaged twice (but he broke it off both times – red flag, maybe?) before finally marrying in 1995. Their son, Michael Garrett Boxleitner, is named after Michael Landon, who played Melissa’s father on Little House on the Prairie.
How tall is Chaz Bono?/Peta Murgatroyd height
Chaz is not only the shortest male celeb this season, but the shortest of all the celebs & pros this season – he’s 5’1″. As for Peta, someone tweeted her and asked how tall she was, and Peta responded with 5’7″. Straight from the horse’s mouth, kids And if you want to know any of the other celebs’ or pros’ heights, check out Heidi’s “Who’s Dancing with Whom?” post.
Lacey Schwimmer boob job/plastic surgery
So apparently Lacey got her boobs done, and possibly her lips too. Big whoop. As I’ve said in the past, I’m not the type to hate on anyone for wanting to improve their physical appearance and/or self-confidence – in moderation. I know plenty of ladies in the dance world that have gotten some help in the bosom department, either to make their costumes fit a bit better or to combat some fat loss in that area from being such an athlete. If it puts a bit more spring in Lacey’s step to have some bigger tatas – good for her, IMO And although I thought she had some pretty full lips to begin with, if she got those done too – fine by me, as long as it makes her happy. I’m probably more apt to bitch about that OTT blonde hair of hers than any sort of surgical enhancements she’s had done – I just thought she was stunning as a brunette! Only one word of caution to her, though – take it easy on the push-up bras. I find that when one has both implants and one of those puppies on, the effect can be a bit…alien. And torture chamber-ish.
Derek Hough girlfriend
Ugh…this is one can of worms I do not feel like opening up. Go over to PureDerekHough and discuss this one with the regulars. Long story short: he may or may not have rekindled things with Cheryl Cole (“She of the Nasty Weave” for those who follow me on Twitter ;-)).
Why isn’t Chelsie Hightower on DWTS?
Well, since I am not privy to the complex inner workings of the minds of TPTB, I can’t give you an official answer on this one – but my best guess is that they simply didn’t have a suitable partner for her this season. No underhanded dealings, no discrimination or conspiracy to get rid of her permanently – they just ended up with a crop of male celebs this season that were either too tall (pretty much all of the men, with the exception of Chaz) or were better matched with other pros (Chaz – I can’t imagine a more perfect partner for him than Lacey). C’est la vie – same thing has happened to Anna, Louis, & Dmitry in past seasons, and they’ve all come back after sitting out a season or 2. In the meantime, it seems like Chelsie is keeping busy with other projects, so she’s certainly not sitting around weeping and sulking about not being on the show this season – and who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and catch a glimpse of her in one of the pro dances this season. Still suffering from Chelsie withdrawal? Check out our ode to her in the most recent edition of Who Wore it Better?
Of what? This is a rather broad term 😛 Or, are you looking for the Taio Cruz song featuring Ke$ha?
“Behind Derek’s Car”
This one made me LOL a bit, because the searched term was actually in quotes as if it were the title of a scary movie or something. Sounds so ominous 😛 Now while the logical side of my brain says that the people searching this were likely trying to figure out which celeb parked behind Derek’s car at the rehearsal studio (because the couples tend to do that), the smartass side of my brain says “Behind Derek’s car…there is likely exhaust.” 😀
Nicole Volynets rumors
I’m assuming this refers to the fact that Nicole will not be returning to the troupe this season – and just like the rumors about Chelsie’s absence this season, there’s been all sorts of speculation as to why. Again, I cannot give you an official answer, but I have 2 theories. One, they’re looking to keep the troupe “younger” – which makes sense to me, if they’re planning on pulling future pros from it. Ted is only 21, Oksana is 22, and Kiki is only 19 or 20 – they still have a few years to cultivate their talent before possibly being promoted to a full-time pro. Peta & Tristan are both a bit older – I think they’re both in their mid-to-late 20’s, and I believe Nicole is 23 or 24. I guess if I were TPTB and I wasn’t planning on promoting someone to full-time pro anytime soon, I think it would be kinder to cut them loose now than to keep them hanging on in vain for a few more seasons in the troupe. It may seem cruel, but it’s just the nature of the business. Another theory that seems to be getting kicked around on Twitter is that Nicole & Ted didn’t like having to do romantic dances together since they’re siblings – which I can understand, it’s definitely awkward. But at the same time, sometimes you just have to be willing to bite the bullet and do things you don’t necessarily want to in order to please your employer – Derek always mentions that he’s had to rumba with Julianne in the past *squirm*. I guess if Ted & Nicole gave the higher-ups the ultimatum that they would only come back if they didn’t have to dance together, I can’t blame TPTB for saying “Well, we can’t guarantee that you won’t have to…unless one of you doesn’t come back.” Regardless of the reason why, I am not worried about Nicole’s future – she seems like she’s already got some great opportunities in the works.
Erm…I can’t read Cyrillic, and right now I can’t be bothered to try and feed this one through Google Translate. But I’m guessing it reads “Maksim Chmerkovskiy”…and, uh, yep…he’s on the show this season. That’s all I got. 😛
Well, I have to say, it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s regurgitation of internet chatter – because let’s face it, mainstream “journalism” leaves a LOT to be desired these days. All you have to do is look at the British press around Cheryl Cole and Derek – ridiculous. Speaking of Cheryl Cole – that rumor has come back to life big time since she flew into Los Angeles on Derek’s arm. Not for this upcoming season, but for Spring 2011. So far, none of this has hit the US press and the UK press just makes stuff up as they go along – then issue apologies when they are outted as blatantly lying. Anyway, I reported on Cheryl the first time around and the same papers are at it again. As usual, that doesn’t make it true. However, it would NOT surprise me for the reasons previously stated.
Kurt Warner I mentioned as a possible celeb a week or two ago – and now it’s hit the mainstream press. I really, REALLY want this one to be true. It’s looking pretty good. I got the below from Reality TV World, but they credit the Washington Post, although they don’t link to the story.
Kurt Warner will be among Dancing with the Stars’ eleventh-season competitors this fall, the Washington Post reported Monday.
While Dancing with the Stars’ prior seasons have featured several retired NFL players — Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Warren Sapp, and Lawrence Taylor — as well as still-active players — Jason Taylor and Chad Ochocinco — Warner would be the first quarterback to compete on the ABC reality ballroom competition.
In case you hadn’t figured it out already, Julianne will not be back for Season 11, due to Footloose. Per Derek at the ABC Press Party, via the Sioux City Journal:
Press Tour: Shaq, Dancing with the Stars and more
Things you learn at an ABC party:
2. The Dancing with the Stars trophy is super heavy. Derek Hough, who now has two of them, says the latest isn’t even at his house. It’s with his publicist. (But it could be joined by an Emmy. He’s nominated for two for choreographing the show.)
6. Julianne Hough will not be on this year’s Dancing with the Stars. She’s too busy. But, says brother Derek, “none of us knows if we’re back. They haven’t decided who’s going to be on the show.”
:::sigh::: Okay, I am only doing this because it is WHAT I DO on this site. I post rumors of future celebrities that might be on DWTS. Often, like now, I have reason to believe it’s not true but I post it anyway, in the off chance a really crappy source gets something right. And this one is guaranteed to piss people off, so that’s a side benefit. Since Derek is on my crap list at this moment (don’t get excited, this too shall pass), I’m not really that pleased that this chose today to pop up.
Background: if you are paying any attention to Derek at all right now, he is ALL over the British media because he is apparently “involved” with Cheryl – so involved that they went to Tanzania for a week together. That much, at least, appears to be true. Cheryl is quite famous in the UK and, I imagine, other parts of Europe, but is a relative unknown here in the US. BUT, she is likely set to be a judge in Simon Cowell’s new show in the fall of 2012, The X-Factor; she’s currently a judge on the UK version of the same show. She is a pop singer, formerly/currently as part of Girls Aloud but also as a solo act. She was introduced to Derek last fall by Bruno. He went on to choreograph a dance for a TV show she was doing, he then choreographed her music video for the same song. After he and Nicole won this past season he was immediately on a plane to the UK where he performed with Cheryl as the opening act for the Black Eyed Peas. I believe they did the concerts in London, Paris and then performed at O2 at Wembley Arena. Since flying back to London after the finale they have been ALL OVER the press and the press has been insane with a different story every single day – sometimes polar opposite stories everyday. For this reason, I post this with a cautionary British Press are absolute CRAP so don’t get too excited either way. The only reason it might be plausible is because it seems like something the producers would do (pair Derek with his girlfriend) AND it seems like a platform she might use to launch herself in the US prior to X-Factor. All that said, from The Mirror.UK:
Cheryl Cole is being lined up for a sizzling new double act with dancer pal Derek Hough on US TV’s Dancing with the Stars.
The singer’s team has been informally approached by ABC network bosses who believe Cheryl and Derek would make an explosive duo.
They were keen to sign her up for the autumn series of the show but such a commitment would clash with her work on X Factor.
So instead they’ve sounded out her representatives about starring as one of the celebrity dancers in the series starting in March 2011 with the final in May.
A source said: “Her US team think it will be a great move for her and increase her profile stateside. Partnering her with Derek too would be a masterstroke and they want her to give it serious thought.
Thought I’d switch it up and do the men today – pardon the expression. We’ll come back to the rest of the women later. Thanks again to the fans that helped me out with finding the information! If I leave anything significant out, let me know and I’ll update.
Status: Confirmed for Season 10 – not in so many words.
From the end of November to January, Maks did Burn the Floor on Broadway with Kym Johnson. Once he left BTF, he went to Vegas and did some choreography work for Le Reve at the Wynn. According to Dianna he went to Buenos Aires to learn the Argentine Tango. He had fun too, going to see Louis Vito qualify for the Olympics in Colorado and then back to NYC to celebrate his mom’s birthday. I saw him tweeting about shopping with his mom and it was quite cute. Yes, I know none of that qualifies as work, but it sounds like fun. Somewhere in all that he went to the Viennese Opera Ball in NYC. Very dashing!
Maks’ 3rd Studio “Dance With Me Soho” just opened in NYC – he was tweeting quite a bit about that and it sounds like he put a lot of work into it. He apparently gives lessons at his studios when not on DWTS.
Maks also works in association with DanceTeamUSA, Ballroom Dance Channel and Grand Dancesport.
Status: Confirmed for Season 10 – in a manner of speaking.
Derek was a world traveler between the end of last season and now and was pretty tight lipped about it all. Since, as everyone here probably knows, I run PureDerekHough, I find this trait of being quiet highly annoying. In the extreme. Anyway…
Derek started his time off by dancing with Cheryl Burke in the Dizzy Feet Foundation benefit and also performing their new single “Move” with Mark Ballas. I was also surprised, when I went back and looked at my site, by how many magazines he got called out in: People’s 16 Sexy Chests, TV Guide’s Hottest Costumes on DWTS, and in Sexiest DWTS Couples by Comcast. There were a few others, but I’m lazy and he didn’t have to do anything to get those – except maybe finally get a publicist.
Derek then jetted off to London under a cloud of mystery. It turns out that he had a high profile choreography gig with Cheryl Cole (pop star, X-Factor judge) for her television show. He choreographed and danced with her for her new single Parachute.
Derek then went back to LA (mystery), then on to NYC for Christmas with Shannon – thought it was vacation only at the time, but it turns out that he did take Maks’ place in Burn the Floor for the last few days of the run after New Years, so there was probably a business reason there too. Somewhere in there he was in Utah for a week. After BTF it was back to LA and then on to London again, this time to choreograph and star in the music video for Cheryl Cole’s Parachute which premiered on MTV UK in February. After they shot the video, Derek and Cheryl flew to Munich, Germany to perform at a tech conference which apparently featured Lady GaGa last year.
In late January, Derek went to Provo, Utah to perform in “Move” with Mark Ballas and Chelsie Hightower. While there, he directed a music video for Mark’s solo project. Since then, he’s been hanging out with Julianne (on the set of Burlesque) and Mark, going to a movie premiere and getting his face splashed all over UK tabloids. He also promoted his friends’ band, DeVIence and, when interviewed at a premiere, said that he has “new adventures” coming up this year. Highly annoying that I don’t know what he’s talking about, but it sounds like there is stuff going on behind the scenes. Also in the video where he said this, he sure made it sound like Julianne would be back on DWTS eventually – which is why I included the link. Watch it and judge for yourself what he says. Sounds to me like she’s still under contract. Hmmmm…..
Status: Confirmed for Season 10 and already rehearsing with his partner!
If I had volunteers to help me with Mark, I don’t remember them and can’t find any communication from them. So, I’m sure to have left stuff out.
Mark has, as far as I can tell, been working almost exclusively on his solo EP project that he just recently released. The EP contains 6 songs and appears to be self-produced – Waiting for Patience. He’s worked on a couple videos for these songs, one of which Derek directed. I don’t know where these videos will show up – possibly on his new MySpace page?
When not working on that, Mark danced at Dizzy Feet with Kristi Yamaguchi, then with Chelsie at “Move” in Provo, Utah. He and Derek also sang Move at Dizzy Feet. Mark also performed in Toronto with Chelsie and Dmitry. He’s been doing a few small club dates playing his own music – I believe mainly in LA. When in Utah, he also played on Good Morning Utah.
If their fans are reading this, I need help with Dmitry, Louis, Tony and I don’t have much on Jonathan. Email me at Heidi@purederekhough.com!
My oh my – we are barely done with Season 9 and the Season 10 speculation starts to crank up.
First up – Jermain Dupre is telling people he would be interested in doing Dancing with the Stars. I’ve seen this one for a couple days now and took it as just talk. I still think it’s “just talk”, but I figured I would post it in the “you just never know” category. From Access Hollywood via some site called DimeWars:
Any Amazing Race fans out there besides me and John? Well, one of the Globetrotters who just got eliminated from the race is saying HE wants to do DWTS – his nickname is Flight Time. Keep in mind that both Flight Time and Jermaine are likely just making it known they would do it if they were to be asked and I think we’re WAY too far out at this point to say this is anything more than wishful thinking on their parts. From the LA Times:
He may not have won the $1 million, but could “Amazing Race” also-ran Herbert “Flight Time” Lang be redirecting his competitive sights to a shiny Mirrorball trophy instead?
The just-eliminated Flight Time (pictured, left), of the “Race’s” popular Harlem Globetrotters team of Flight Time and Big Easy, cracked open the possibility of outfitting himself in glittery face decals and sequins when asked by EW.com if there was a chance that he could show up on another reality show. “I feel like I can do anything now,” he responded. “I enjoy watching ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and I think I’m a pretty good dancer.”
I would love it – these guys were the best sports, played a great game and they never got upset, or fought. They were very entertaining. I say yes.
According to a source at ABC, “The casting of professionals is determined by the casting of the celebrities, which is still in progress.” Chmerkovskiy’s rep corroborated: “Maks has a contract that goes beyond season 10. As to if he’s coming back or not for next season, that always depends on casting.” Smirnoff’s rep called the one-or-the-other rumor “malicious,” and added, “Karina loves being on Dancing With the Stars and has a professional working relationship with Maksim. I can assure you that she has every intention of returning in the spring.”
Yeah, neither dancer is going anywhere. With each passing season, the pros are bigger stars (and bigger initial draws) than most of the celebrities. ABC will do anything to hold on to the top tier pros AND if they fight it just means better ratings and more attention. Controversy is cash. Derek is fond of saying “Well, if they cast all 6 foot tall women, then Mark and I are out.” While not necessarily true, it’s reasonably accurate – that said, I got 100 buck they make sure they have a couple shorter women in there. Although…Derek didn’t give that stock answer the most recent time he was asked….hmmmm….hold me, I’m getting scared.
Speaking of Derek – I just found out one of the things he’s doing in the off season. A pretty high profile choreography gig! He’s choreographing Cheryl Cole’s next single off her hit album in London. Cheryl Cole is a judge of the British show The X-Factor (created and also judged by Simon Cowell). She is also huge in England (and Europe?) as a recording artist and got started in a group called Girls Aloud on Pop Stars (English version of American Idol). Derek talks about his gig in this video I posted on PureDerekHough – he’s at the 10 minute mark.
Finally, I don’t know that I mentioned this before, but congratulations to Kym Johnson for her Broadway Debut in Burn the Floor!! Couldn’t have happened to a nicer girl! She’s dancing with Maks who returns to the show after a successful run in the late summer. From Theater Mania:
Kym Johnson isn’t exaggerating when she says the last week of November was “the craziest week of my life.” On Tuesday, November 24, she and her celebrity partner, Donny Osmond, were crowned champions of the ninth season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and on Friday, November 27, she made her Broadway debut in the dance extravaganza Burn the Floor. TheaterMania recently spoke with Johnson about these significant events and her plans for the future.
TM: Is this your first time doing Burn the Floor?
KJ: I was in the original workshop in 1998, and then I toured with it for six years — we even did Radio City Music Hall. But it’s definitely changed a lot; it was more of an arena-style show in the past. Now, it’s much more intimate. I also had to learn all new choreography; but since I am really familiar with Jason Gilikson’s style, it wasn’t so hard.
TM: You’re appearing in the show with your Dancing with the Stars co-star Maksim Chmerkovskiy. What is that like?
KJ: We’re good friends, so it’s nice to be dancing with him every night. And no offense, but on Dancing, you don’t dance fully with another professional, so I am really enjoying this. Plus, on the show, I had to choreograph all the numbers and come up with songs, costumes, and all that. It’s nice that I don’t have to keep thinking every minute and I can just dance.
TM: What was your reaction when you found out your partner was going to be Donny Osmond?
KJ: The dancers are always playing guessing games before they tell us who our partners are, and I think everyone was jealous. I had a good feeling from the beginning; I knew he was dedicated and would give everything. His work ethic is so professional.
TM: What was your off-stage relationship like?
KJ: Donny is the nicest man; he had a smile on his face every day. He used to give me singing lessons on our lunch break, which was a real role reversal. He would bully me into singing, and I’d bully him into dancing. He thinks I have a good voice. He tells me I should do it professionally. We’ll see.
