Dancing with the Stars 9 – Week 1 Results Show

Lots of good stuff in this episode!  I still love the Lion King number, but that may be because that’s one of the shows I’ve not seen in it’s entirety.

I thought the Adam Carolla bit about the Men’s Pep Talk was just hilarious. Very well done by all. 🙂

The Patrick Swayze Tribute was beautifully done, however, I doubt I’ll get any argument when I say there is NO replacing the original. Farewell Patrick.

DWTS Week 1 Power Rankings, Part I – The Guys

Due to the unique nature of this season (with the guys performing on the first night and the girls performing on the second night), I’ve decided to rank the guys separately, then the girls, and then an “overall” if you will…I would just wait to do them all at once, but then what fun would it be without you guys discussing it while it’s still fresh in your minds? 🙂

Alright, I’m going to be as brief as I can…I still have House & CSI: Miami to watch!

1.) Donny & Kym – Donny really did knock it out of the park tonight.  While I don’t think he was technically as strong as Aaron or Mark, his footwork was clean, and of course, he played the best to the crowd. Kym definitely choreographed to his strengths – the Chicago-themed foxtrot was really a very clever choice.  He was also the strongest of the 4 in the salsa relay – while not as eye-catching as Louie & Chelsie or even Chuck & Anna, he had the best execution and showmanship.  And it’s likely his showmanship that will carry him straight through to the final…that, or the legion of screaming women in the audience!

2.) Aaron & Karina – Ok, I knew Aaron would be pretty good, but MAN – the kid even surprised me with some of the stuff he was pulling out! Definitely the strongest technically for me tonight – some of the hip action & arms I saw from him were truly amazing. He also had probably the highest degree of difficulty in his routines – his Viennese relay definitely had the most tricks (which executed very well).  He also comes across as a very likeable kid in the lead-ins – he has the same boyish charm that I think  made Cody Linley so endearing.  He does have one weakness, however: he doesn’t really let his face convey any sort of emotion while dancing.  Very deadpan – like he is really focusing hard on the task at hand.  I do see glimmers of “swagger” come through when he’s trying to be sexy, though 😉

3.) Louie & Chelsie – These two really pleasantly surprised me! First off, they are too cute for words – they’re this season’s “vertically challenged” couple (to quote Mia from SYTYCD this season, when referring to another adorable pocket-sized couple – Randi & Evan), plus they’re both young and energetic.  And Louie actually seemed to nail the “flow” of the foxtrot – all with a brilliant smile on his face.  He got to show of his athleticism in his salsa – while it might not go over well with Len, flashy tricks & stunts always seem to be a hit with the viewers.  I can see America keeping them around for awhile, for the simple reason that they’re just adorable – like Aaron, Louie seems to have the impish boy-next-door act down pat!

4.) Mark & Lacey – While Mark was technically stronger than Louie, I felt that his energy wasn’t quite as strong or endearing – like Aaron, I can see him having issues with showmanship because he gets so much into his own head, trying to really nail the technical aspects of the dance.  That said, Mark probably has the best combination of strength and agility of all the guys on the show – that, and he has awesome pecs.  And abs.  And arms.  And an awesome bone structure. And when the bulk of the voting public is female – that’s a good skill set to have 😉

5.) Michael & Anna – I fear that Anna has fallen into the trap of trying to add a lot of “filler” to their routines to try and conceal the fact that Michael is not a great dancer, rather than trying to help him improve.  Michael seems to have the opposite problem of Aaron & Mark – he is so much into the crowd interaction & “having fun” part of the dance that he tends to get a bit sloppy.  But man, is he fun to watch! And he & Anna seem to interact well during their practices – he’s definitely going to be the jokester of this bunch.  He has the same goofy energy that Warren Sapp had – but unfortunately, not the same level of skill.

6.) Tom & Cheryl – Yes, Tom was pretty bad.  But not nearly as bad as I expected him to be! What he lacked in technique (which was a lot) he made up for in energy & feeling…I actually enjoyed watching him dance, and found him to be (I can’t believe I’m saying this…*gulp*) rather charming, especially in the Viennese waltz relay.  The dude is 62 and he did a POWER SLIDE ACROSS THE FLOOR, PEOPLE!!! That takes guts, even if you’re young.  But alas, charm & energy can only carry you so far – and I don’t see Tom lasting any longer than week 3, tops.  He’s stiff, his footwork is sloppy, his shoulders are hunched, he can’t do the tricks that the younger competitors can do – and he’s still a disgraced politician.

7.) Chuck & Anna – Chuck maybe said a total of 20 words all night.  While he still may scare the crap outta me (and a good portion of America), I think it was Chuck who was quakin’ in his boots tonight – hence the intimidating silence, and overall lack of emotion.  His foxtrot was painful to watch – just as I feared, he is heavy on his feet, which results in rather stiff, stilted movement.  Having the fedora passed back & forth as a prop was cute, but I almost feel like it was just another thing for Chuck to worry about…he looked petrified every time it changed hands.  But man, Chuck certainly handled his woman during the salsa relay – his strength definitely showed every time he dipped, turned, and spun Anna.  Aaron & Louie might be the masters of acrobatics this season, but I think Chuck could easily outdo them both when it comes to lifts – which we don’t get to see until later in the competition 🙁 So unless he can pull out a smile (or really any kind of emotion) when he dances…I doubt we’ll be seeing those lifting abilities.

8.) Ashley & Edyta – These two were a non-event for me.  I am having a hard time remembering anything truly memorable they did, and I even took notes on all the performances! Ashley’s not great, but he wasn’t bad either – I think he actually had one of the better foxtrots of the night, as he seemed to really get the fluid motion of it.  His salsa was boring.  Period.  I have a strong feeling these two will be gone come Wednesday, for the simple reason that they got lost in the shuffle – nothing, good or bad, made them stand out.

Alright guys, let’s hear what you think…I’m off to enjoy the rest of fall premiere week! 🙂

All Male Pro Dance and Opening Introductions!

Found them on the web already – – posted large sizes at Pure Derek Hough. Smaller sizes are below.

Who will be the first to go on DWTS Season 9?

One week! Just a week left…finally! So today I’m gonna ask you who you think will go home first. But there’s a little catch…I only put 5 girls and 5 guys. That means 6 people didn’t make it to my list and the person you expect to be booted off first might not be on here. And if they aren’t I want to know.

And just so you know…I put these up in “no particular order” and randomly chose names. 🙂

I also wanted to give you the latest results for the last 2 polls.

Favorite Past Winner Poll

Shawn and Mark are still in the lead at 31% and the next couple behind them is Brooke and Derek at 21%.

The Dance You Are Most Excited to See Poll

The Argentean Tango is in the lead at 26% and the Paso Doble is 2nd at 19% with the Cha-Cha-Cha at 16%.

What do you think of these results? Do you agree or disagree? Let’s hear it…

Dancing with the Stars Season 9 News – Week of September 7, 2009

We have VARIETY this week!! At least one person we haven’t heard from before, and a video of another that rather defies expectations, I think. And then there are the things that make you go, ‘WTF?’ We’ll start with things that make you go ‘WTF’. Mark Ballas finding his way into People Online talking about Maks and Karina? In what universe is that appropriate? Bad Marky. 🙂 I know that Maks and Karina spent time at Derek and Shannon’s house, but I didn’t realize you two were so tight that you would discuss him with People. Derek and Cheryl also supposedly weighed in with a “it won’t affect the show, they’re professionals, blah blah blah” but that’s standard verbiage when asked questions by paparazzi. Mark goes a little further.

“He’s doing okay but he’s not happy,” says Ballas, who spoke to Chmerkovskiy Wednesday night for several hours. “I know he loved Karina. He loved her very much.”

Ballas says he doesn’t know why his fellow dancers split but was “shell-shocked” when he learned the news. “I don’t really know who made the decision but obviously he’s upset,” Ballas tells PEOPLE.

Other DWTS pros Derek Hough and Cheryl Burke said the split wouldn’t affect the hit show. “They have been dancing together for years, so they will be fine,” Burke says.

Ballas, who has been friends with Chmerkovskiy for 14 years, says reports that Chmerkovskiy’s family did not warm up to Smirnoff were untrue.

“I highly doubt that,” he says. “Neither his dad or his mom really speak English. I don’t know where that come from.”

Despite sounding “low” during their phone conversation, Ballas says, Chmerkovskiy is finding joy in his new dancing partner.

Next? Maks and Karina speak for themselves on Entertainment Tonight:

Stars past and present handicap this seasons celebs on Extra:

Next up – Kathy Ireland and Tony Dovolani on Extra!! She’s seems like such a nice woman, but I’m afraid for her on this show. She claims she’s “clumsy”. Not good.

As most of you have probably heard, Derek Hough and Julianne Hough were up for an Outstanding Choreography Emmy and did not win. But, Derek was correct yesterday when he said it was an honor to be included in that event:

Met Derek Hough at yesterday’s Creative Arts Emmys and decided he was too cute not to make my Morning Man today.

Derek was nominated for his Dancing With the Stars choreography but lost out to some dude from So You Think You Can Dance.

Derek said of his Emmy chances: “I’m not expecting to win, I’m just very happy to be here. It’s an honor. I’m honored and privileged to be a part of such a fantastic show and to be able to create and choreograph these things out of thin air is a lot of fun and I love it.”

I reminded Derek that some of the contestants got injured last season so would be take it a little easier on the choreography?

“No, on the contrary,” he said. “We always have to kind of up our game and make it a bit more daring and exciting each season. I think we should take care of ourselves a little bit more that’s all.”

He went with Joanna Krupa and lord knows they looked Gorgeous, both of them. One photo below, a whole bunch more at PureDerekHough.

2009 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, California

Speaking of Joanna, she’s heavily featured in this paparazzi video from Friday night when she was out with Derek and another friend. She actually seems like a cool girl, IMO. I’d hang out with her. You have to listen to a couple non-DWTS people and then Derek kisses the women good night and we have Joanna. And Derek being a responsible boy and taking a cab home. 🙂

Behind the Scenes of the Title Shoot – DWTS Season 9

Disturbingly heavy in some stars (Donny), and very light in other (MJH and Joanna, to name two). Are they favoring people already? Oh. Wait. Of course they are!! 🙂

Derek Hough Tweets about the LA Wild Fires

Derek’s tweets were picked up by USA Today, as were some by Donnie Wahlberg.  Here’s what they say about Derek:

Time for a Twitter break. From Dancing With The Stars pro Derek Hough just 29 minutes ago: “Smoky smoky smoky … I can’t believe these fires, my eyes are itchy from the ash ..”

These fires are truly scary.

There was lots of twitter activity today – almost like the kids got together and decided to have a contest. 😉

Here are Derek’s most recent:
derek tweet in n out

Here’s the picture to go with it – don’t have to worry about him wasting away this season like he did last. 🙂

Just before that….

The after picture (so much for the Derek/Shannon break up – both pics are from Shannon’s house)-

Everyone being threatened by these horrible fires – you’re in our prayers.

On a lighter note – Kelly Osborne tweeted a picture of herself. She’s looking FANTASTIC!! Great job, Kelly!
Kelly O after photo shoot

Mark Ballas thought he would post a flattering picture of his partner. 🙂 Really, she’s much cuter than this. 🙂
Melissa twit pic
He thinks it’s hilarious. He then proceeds to flirt with his girlfriend. Mark, take a note…. 🙂
Marky B twitter

I swear to god, if it weren’t for Mark Ballas having a twitter addiction, I would think that abc told them all to tweet on tuesdays. Because, Lacey and Chelsie AND Chuck Liddell all weigh in – keep in mind that all this tweeting is taking place in about a three hour time period.

Chuck tweets a nice picture:
Chuck and Anna rehearsing

Lacey’s picture makes me even more convinced she has a contender – for some reason. Maybe because he’s hot. 🙂
Mark D and Lacey

Chelsie’s picture is, I think, not from today. I’ve completely lost track. Whoever was telling me not to underestimate Louie because he’s cute – you were RIGHT. He’s a little (very little) cutie. 🙂
Chelsie and Louie practicin'

If you want to follow the celebs and the pros on Twitter, you can visit our Twitter Post and click the links to the various pros and celebs for whom we have found Twitter pages.  They’re often quite entertaining. 😉 Derek is winning so far, with that twit pic of himself – Louie and Mark D – start takin’ stuff off. 😉

Twitter Round-Up

Hello all! I did a quick round-up of what the stars and pros are tweeting. There are a lot of cool pictures and gives us some insight on how great the first shows are going to be. (Just a note that the only editing to the posts is censoring any obscenities)

Tom Bergeron

Reading tweets from some of our season 9 cast. They’re all hard at work. I don’t start for two weeks. Makes me almost feel guilty. Almost.

*Looks like us fans aren’t the only ones interested in what this season’s cast is tweeting.

Joanna Krupa

couldnt sleep cause i am sore from head to toe…long day of rehearsals yesterday. taking my aleve now

had a great salsa lesson by my kick a** partner! he rocks…now need to tan!

*Should I tell her that Advil works better? I love that the stars are already tanning.

Aaron Carter

I THINK WE HAVE CHA-CHA’d OUR WAY INTO INSANITY!

Aaron and Karina - crazy

*I completely agree Aaron. I cannot wait to see how this is going to be worked into their dance.

Tom Delay

I am back from LA. The photo shoot was so much fun. It was like going to Disneyland. You know politics is showbiz too.

In LA for rehearsals and title shoots. Also learning two dances. Cheryl says I am progressing very well.

After two dance sessions I can tell you Cheryl Burke is the most patient person I have ever met.

*I wonder how they are going to pan out…maybe she’s over getting stuck with “the old guy” (See Heidi’s post DWTS Season 9 News).

Melissa Joan Hart

Learned the basic foxtrot and jive today!! Good stuff. Feet are hurting and back is sore. Yay!!

Wow! The chacha will make your abs rockin!!! No more crunches, just need to chachacha!

Team Melarky

*Don’t they look so cute together? She has learned 3 dances already…are these for the first shows or is this just preparation? And I think it’s time to start learning the cha-cha myself…I hate crunches!

Chuck Liddell

Went to my first costume fitting today. This is going to be interesting…

*It IS going to be interesting and I can’t wait to see what they get him to wear,

Debi Mazar

This is ME now..I’m afraid that I will have this face during my routine.Today was rough..near tears.I sucked!

*I love this pic but I hate that she had such a rough day. Hopefully, it’ll get better for her.

Just got my 1st spray tan for DWTS,funny!St.Tropez brand, doesn’t smell! look like I just got off a boat off of Italian Coast.for promo shoot

Sadly I discover that I’m uncordinated..After 30 yrs on NYC dance floors,I thought i was the “s***”.I had a wake up call this 1st week!oy!

   *LOL! This makes me laugh.

Karina Smirnoff is sexy ,amazing&and as actress, she is MY character study!GOD,she ROCKS!I only wish I can pull off her moves!!!BELLA!!!!

Pros

Chelsie Hightower

Taking a break.. Got our music today, “it’s my life” by No Doubt?? How am I gonna pull off a foxtrot to that?!

*Umm, yeah…that song doesn’t really say “foxtrot” to me.

Derek Hough

Joanna is doing better .. lookin good .. Worked on a little ballroom frame aswell .

I always hurt my neck every season , I guess it’s better now then later … Frustrating pain ..

Here’s a little peak of what we did today

hubba hubba
*Heidi this is for you…and for everyone else. Derek, thank you for this! Oh, and I hope your neck feels better.

Louis Van Amstel

Our first solo dance is a ballroom dance. The dance originating in the capital of Austria. Our relay dance is the dance w 3 of d same words

*Okay, I really don’t understand this after the second sentence. Can anyone translate? And what the heck is a relay dance.

No kickingin in the nuts today. @MissKellyO learnt the whole routine today. It’s still rough, but i think u might b in 4 a surprise…

Oh,yeah..i forgot to tell all of you @MissKellyO kicked me in the nuts yesterday. She decided to just pull up her other knee!!!Kinda hurt….

*Poor Louis! I’m excited about this surprise…

MaksI think I got one of the hardest working people as my partner. I’m really enjoying our rehearsals. I think Debi will do great!

*Seems like they are going to be a good pairing…even if she was having a rough day it’s good to know she’s still working hard.

Mark Ballas

Cha cha time!!!!!!!!!!! Wahoo!

Melissa doing GREAT today, moving what I like to call SMOOTH!!!

*I’m glad that she’s doing well and Mark is one of my favorites so I hope the Team Melarky does well!

Just a quick note that almost all of the celebs have Twitter accounts (not all verified) but not all of them mentioned DWTS or if they did…it just didn’t seem interesting to me. This is a previous article that has links to all of the DWTS season 9 Twitter accounts if you want to see more.

DWTS Season 9 News – Week of August 24, 2009

Someone asked, in the comments, why people might vote against Donny – the news for the week is one example. Almost all Donny – little bit of Joanna, Derek, Mark and Melissa and a nice piece on Debi Mazar, but three of the five videos are on Donny (and Marie).  Overkill and we’re still three weeks out.  :::sigh::: Keep in mind that I only put up what my Tivo picks up – it’s possible I may have missed some things.

DWTS Season 9 News

Lots of news and interviews out there on the web today.  E! News has a slightly different paparazzi video from what I’ve seen, in addition to a Marc Malkin article. A couple excerpts:

Professional snowboarder Louie Vito hopes his stint on the new season of Dancing With the Stars improves his luck with the ladies.

“If worse comes to worse, maybe if I go to a wedding or a club, I can bust out some of the moves,” he tells us. “I’ve gotta get those smooth moves that maybe aren’t that typical. I might have to bust out the salsa in the middle of a club.”

Just a few days before learning who she’d be paired with, Burke predicted she’d be matched with someone like the 62-year-old former congressman. “I’m due for the old guy,” she said. “It’s all right though. If I keep getting the good person then people will start being upset I think.”

Oh Cheryl, I love you (and how you dance with Derek :-)), but that struck me as a bit rude. The Old guy? Girl, I hate Tom DeLay – and for a moment I felt a twinge of sympathy. ::::shiver:::: Okay, I’m over it.

Mya’s very afraid of getting hurt – a very valid fear, but one that often leads to injury. According to MTV.com:

“So far, rehearsals have been really tough,” she told MTV News. “So it’s kind of like reversing my thinking, ’cause hip-hop is so loose and not structured, and tap is so loose and close to the ground and not structured, so it’s so different. I have a lot of work to do in reversing how I think. And I have a lot of partner work to do, so I hope it doesn’t hurt me. But I think music and musicality is going to help me stay on the beat.”

Mya admitted that, aside from learning the dances, she’s also scared she might hurt herself in the process. “I had to change my shoes yesterday, ’cause my heels were starting to hurt — and keep in mind that everything was in heels,” she said. “I had a foot fracture last year, and I’ve had injuries in the past. That’s what my worst fear is. To get injured … is something I’m nervous about.”

She might be nervous, but she’s also excited to get to know the other celebrities dancing this season — one of whom she was surprised to learn would be on the show. “I didn’t think it was in her personality to do something like this, but it’s great that she is,” she said of rock progeny Kelly Osbourne. “And I actually met her last night, and she’s very cute and funny, so she’s very sweet. I was just surprised, ’cause she’s more of a rebel to me.”

Mya

Hey – I think I like these odds. But since I don’t know anything about gambling, I can’t be sure. 🙂

All the excitement is set to begin on September 21, 2009. Will the stars have enough fancy footwork to keep up with the professionals, or will they trip over their own feet and leave sooner than expected? Find out what kind of odds BetED sportsbook has on who will win the next Dancing With the Stars.
