Dancing With The Stars Derek Hough On LIVE! With Kelly Teaser (Photo)

Isn’t that a beautiful picture of Derek and Kelly Ripa? Today he was a guest on her show from Hawaii where they previewed his dance lessons with the chosen wedding couple. He also mentions how the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars will be his 9th season. Be sure to visit Pure Derek Hough for more awesome takes from the show. Then stay tuned later to Pure Derek Hough as no doubt Heidi will have some video coverage for us as well.

(Can I just say…that million dollar smile going down the slide and under the water today was a “keeper”. 😀 )

DWTS TV Mentions: Brooke Burke On GMA, Derek Hough And Carrie Anne Inaba On LIVE! With Kelly

Just a couple of TV mentions! Don’t forget Derek Hough and Carrie Ann Inaba will be guesting and helping Kelly Ripa to co-host ‘LIVE! With Kelly’ this coming week in Hawaii. Derek just landed in Hawaii. He’s been posting some cool instagrams at his twitter account already such as this beautiful scene from his hotel below.

Also, KHON2 in Hawaii interviewed Kelly this past week leading up to the tapings. Here’s one of them below as a little teaser for what’s to come…

Stay tuned to Pure Derek Hough as knowing our Miss Heidi, she will have lots of ‘Derek’ coverage when she gets it. In fact, she’s got some nice things up now you don’t want to miss seeing…and that’s all I will say. 🙂

Also, be sure to tune into Good Morning America on Monday! According to ABC MediaNet, Brooke Burke will guesting to share her workout tips. Let’s hope she gives us some teasers about the new season of Dancing With The Stars. Though if things keep going as they are, they won’t be much to speak of. 😯

PureDWTS Ask Courtney: Why Do Ladies Have to Wear Heels For Ballroom/Latin?

I confess: no one specifically asked this question, but some of you may have noticed that tend to get bit irritated whenever a female celeb or pro on the show opts to forgo the traditional heels in favor of boots, sneakers, or going barefoot.  I thought I’d explain just why I get my knickers in such a twist over it 🙂

There are two primary reasons why heels are worn in both the Latin & ballroom dances: the first is aesthetic, and the other is technical. Aesthetically, the shoes are worn to give the the women’s legs a long, lean appearance – the neutral flesh tone of the fabric blends nicely with the skin, giving a nice, long, unbroken line; the heels themselves of course make the women look taller, which in turn enhances the illusion of long legs.  You may have noticed that the women on the show don’t often wear colored dance shoes – that’s because a color that contrasts with the skin tends to “chop off” those nice long lines, and make the women’s legs look shorter.  Why is it so important to have long legs? Because the longer your legs are, the nicer your lines are going to look, and the better technique you’re going to show – and the happier the judges are. 🙂

From a technical aspect, the shoes actually help to ensure that the ladies are using the proper technique in their dances.  Remember my post about heel & toe leads? Well the shoes that the ladies wear for Latin are specially balanced so that the ladies’ body weight is shifted over her toes – and remember, all the Latin dances move forward (and backward) with a toe lead.  The ballroom shoes tend to keep the ladies’ body weight balanced evenly on her heels & toes, much like normal shoes, as all the steps in the ballroom dances move forward on the heel and backward on the toe – just like normal walking.  The shoes alone can’t guarantee that a dancer will always have the right technique – but they certainly do help!

So let’s say a woman *cough*Lacey*cough* decides to forgo wearing the proper shoes while dancing, and instead wears something more flat-footed, like boots.  In the Latin dances, it’s probably going to result in her legs looking very short & stubby, and her lines not as impressive.  Case in point: Lance & Lacey’s cha-cha in season 7:

Or, in Hope’s case this past season, those boots just gave her a complete lack of hip action, and resulted in a very flat, boring rumba:

The effect is a bit less noticeable in the ballroom dances, since they move so similarly to natural walking movement, and I can’t really think of a time on the show that someone has danced a ballroom dance barefoot.  However, I do remember Twitch & Kherington’s Viennese waltz routine from season 4 of SYTYCD, and I remember not being wild about them doing it barefoot, as it just looked somewhat “unfinished” and more like contemporary than real ballroom:

So there you have it – you be the judge.  I personally think that all ballroom & Latin dances should be done in the proper footwear, and it’s only (semi)acceptable to go barefoot if you’re a pro doing a contemporary-ish pro dance.  But what do you guys think? 🙂

Dancing With The Stars Season 9 Contestant And Professional Snow Boarder Louie Vito Makes History!!

Former Dancing With The Stars Season 9 contestant and professional snow boarder, Louie Vito, made history yesterday!! A fan named Byrl sent us the details and a cool video for how Louie did so. What’s more, former partner, Chelsie Hightower, was there to support and cheer him on. Below reader Byrl tells us about it and what’s next for Louie….

Byrl: Here is the video of Louie Vito making history this afternoon. Chelsie Hightower was there cheering Louie on, she saw history being made right in front of her eyes. Louie is the first male to ever win back to back Dew Cups, first to ever throw down 4 double corks and score the highest score ever in the Dew cup of 98. Chelsie was overjoyed and you can tell at the very end where Louie goes over they are hugging each other. I have watched this video 3 times and every time he amazes me on just how good he is.

Now he is in flight to Oslo, Norway for a competition and will be back in the US on the 20th and then has a break for about 5 days and then on to Mammouth, California from March 1st-3rd. Then from there he goes to The Burton Open in Vermont on March 5h-11th and then to Tynes, France, I think, for his last competition of the season. He won gold there last season.

Enjoy this video…

Picture above is of Louie, Chelsie, Louie Vito Sr., and JJ Thomas (Louie’s coach). Thanks to Byrl for the news, pic, and write-up.

R.I. P. Whitney Houston One of Dancing With The Stars Greatest Guests To Entertain

I am so shocked on this news as I’m sure all of you are. I don’t know what to say? 🙁 🙁 According to MSNBC, Whitney Houston, one of the greatest singers of our time (and all time) has passed away…cause and location of death at this time is unknown.

At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”

She had the he perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.

She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.

Below is of Whitney’s most fun performances on Dancing With The Stars and doesn’t this song just say it all for what the show is about?:

With all of our love, rest in peace Whitney! You’ll never be forgotten! Thank you for your music! xxx

Divas as always! Pictured above is Kym Johnson and Cheryl Burke attending a Pre-Grammy Party hosted by Ok! Magazine last night. Other celebrities attending the party were Taylor Armstrong, Ali Fedotowsky, Kendra Wilkinson, Jasmine Dustin just to name a few.

ADDING: Pop Candies captured some video of the two of them as well…

DWTS 13 Champ J.R. Martinez Talks With Tim Tebow And Sherri Shepherd About Dancing

Celebuzz is reporting J.R. Martinez was in Indianapolis over the weekend for the Super Bowl. He got to mingle with some celebrities some of which included Denver Bronco Tim Tebow. He talked to Tim as well as The View’s Sherri Shepherd while in New York City recently ….both rumored contenders to dance on Dancing With The Stars. Here’s a quote for what they told him about dancing on the show….

…J.R. revealed, “I actually did come across Tim Tebow, and we chatted about [Dancing With the Stars] for a second. I thought he’d do pretty well on the show!”

But does that mean Tim is actually up for the task? Not so fast, according to J.R.

“He said, ‘Maybe in a year’ … That’s pretty much what he said.”

As for who J.R. would personally like to see on the show, the military vet, who recently teamed with The Phoenix Society to help raise awareness for burn victims, has his sights set on one of daytime’s most popular ladies.

“I think Sherri Shepherd from ‘The View’ would be good,” he said. “We talked about it a couple times when I was still in New York. I think she’d do good on it.”

You can read the full story at Celebuzz.

Very interesting! Once again, I would not be surprised if Sherri dances for Season 14.
