Afterbuzz TV With Gleb Savchenko And Elena Samodanova Review Dancing With The Stars Season 20 Week 8

This week Elena Samodanova and Gleb Savchenko joined the Afterbuzz TV gang to review Dancing With The Stars Season 20 Week 8! It was so cool to get a perspective from Gleb and Elena being they have danced and/or judged in other countries (here, Australia, India, recently Russia…and soon the UK). I found them fascinating with their knowledge and insights. They were refreshing and articulate with their reviews and thoughts of each couple. I especially loved how Gleb and Elena praised Sharna and Derek for their choreography. Gleb even called Derek “extraordinary”.

Other notes:
-Note that Gleb and Elena are only in Los Angeles for two weeks. Next week, Gleb plans to take his DWTS Russia partner Adelina Sotnikova to Dancing With The Stars on Monday and Tuesday. So, look for them in the audience.

-Elena also talked about judging DWTS Russia and what it was like to judge Gleb and Adelina (wouldn’t she make a cool judge here? I love her!).

– Gleb also talked of doing Strictly Come Dancing this Fall in the UK and then they are returning to back to Los Angeles. Gleb said he hopes to dance in Dancing With The Stars Season 22 here.

-Also note that Kristyn said Kym Johnson won’t be dancing on our version of Dancing With The Stars next season. She is going back to Australia to judge.

Lots more below. Excellent show with a lot of cool information. Let us know what you think as always….

ETA: Part of the video below has been edited. Not sure why, but, during the live stream when they were talking about the Derek, Nastia, and Sasha’s trio, Gleb again mentioned Derek’s musicality in his choreography and how he can create around the song(fast and slow) and that you don’t see that level of choreography very often because you have to be “extraordinary”. So, keep that in mind while you listen.

ETA2: You can listen to an audio version of the entire show (unedited) at this link. The part that was missing in the video below can be heard at the 42:14 mark. Thanks to Angie for letting us know.

ETA3: Kristyn tweeted there were “transmission issues” and that’s why they had to edit the video. You can also listen to the Podcast at iTunes.

DWTSRussia Semi-Finals With Gleb Savchenko, Adelina Sotnikova, Elena Samodanova – Special Preview, Photos, Video

Are you ready for the Dancing With The Stars Russia Semi-finals? For starters, Anastassija (@NastineLi at twitter) was so gracious and wrote us a fun preview for what the show is about this week so we’d understand it better. It reads as follows….

Anastassija: The 10th show of DWTS RUSSIA will be dedicated to the most popular and successful singer of Soviet Union and Russia of all times, Alla Pugachjova. She had her birthday on April, 15 (she turned 66) so they decided to make such a present to her. Each pair takes their favourite song by A.Pugachjova and performs a dance. She has a very rich repertoir, so it’s very difficult to guess the choices.

To make it a bit more clear, she is somewhat like Madonna or Michael Jackson for Russians. Actually when she was young, she was really a mega-star and an absolute idol for several generations of soviet people. Now she almost doesn’t perform, but she is extremely respected and a very influential person in the world of show business in Russia. She is a welcome guest on many shows, she used to be a judge on a very famous russian-produced international talent festival New Wave, she also produced her own talent show(smth like Star Academy) “Factor A”. So she still stays very active ;)) and i won’t be surprised if tomorrow she is one of the judges ;))

An interesting fact – she is wife of the host of the show, Maxim Galkin. They have a big age difference, but they are happily married and have little twins. Though, A.Pugachjova has a grown up daughter, who is also a popular singer in Russia, and two grandsons, one of whom also tries to be a professional musician. You can read really much about her here. And here you can listen to a collection of her really greatest hits and most popular songs of all her career ;))

Back to Vogue: So, this week Gleb Savchenko is dancing in a men’s group dance. Anastassija tells us they will be dancing to a song called “Kings Can Do Anything”.

GlebSavchenkoDWTSRussiaSemiFinals

Anastassija translated the lyrics for us below and what they mean to set up this dance before we see it….

1.Once upon a time there lived a king
He rules his country and his people as he only could
And his name was Louis the Second.
But the song is not about him but about love.
At those times there lived a beauty
She … the shepherd geese at the walls of the palace,
But for Louis she was the prettiest of all
And he decided to marry her
Chorus:
Kings can do anything, kings can do anything,
They even decide the destiny of the whole world,
But no matter what you say
No king can marry for love
2.”I will marry, I will marry, I will marry”, said Louis.
And all his neighbours kings immediately arrived to him,
And there was a huge scandal, a really huge scandal.
But the song is not about that but about love.
And finally he married another woman.
She had only kings in her pedigree.
But if you saw the portrait of that princess,
You would never envy Louis
Chorus.

Let us know what you think in comments!!

ETA2: Just a little FYI from our Russia friend and translator @NastineLI. The opening number (seen above) was dedicated to Cosmonautics Day in Russia. You can read all about this Russian holiday at Wikipedia. Below is a take from the link. FASCINATING!! Thanks Annastassija!!

In 2011, April 12 was declared as the International Day of Human Space Flight in dedication of the first manned space flight made on April 12, 1961 by the 27-year-old Russian Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Gagarin circled the Earth for 1 hour and 48 minutes aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.

The commemorative day was established in the Soviet Union one year later, on April 9, 1962. In modern Russia, it is celebrated in accordance with Article 1.1 of the Law “On the Days of Military Glory and the Commemorative Dates in Russia”.

Gagarin’s flight was a triumph for the Soviet space program, and opened a new era in the history of space exploration. Gagarin became a national hero of the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc and a famous figure around the world. Major newspapers around the globe published his biography and details of his flight. Moscow and other cities in the USSR held mass demonstrations, the scale of which was second only to WWII Victory Parades. Gagarin was escorted in a long motorcade of high-ranking officials through the streets of Moscow to the Kremlin where, in a lavish ceremony, he was awarded the highest Soviet honour, the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, by the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

Nowadays the commemoration ceremony on Cosmonautics Day starts in the city of Korolyov, near Gagarin’s statue. Participants then proceed under police escort to Red Square for a visit to Gagarin’s grave in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis, and continue to Cosmonauts Alley, near the Monument to the Conquerors of Space. Finally, the festivities are concluded with a visit to the Novodevichy Cemetery.

Elena Samodanova Interviewed About DWTSRussia, Gleb Savchenko, Adelina Sotnikova And More In MK Magazine

Gleb Savchenko And Elena Samodanova and their little girl, Olivia, are in the current issue of MK Magazine in Russia. The interview includes beautiful photos and has been posted at Woman Hit. @NastineLi at twitter has also been so gracious to translate the interview for us to English which you can read below. Elena talks of what it’s like to judge Dancing With The Stars Russia. She also talks of Gleb, his Dancing With The Stars Russia partner Adelina Sotnikova, and their daughter Olivia. Read on….

The finalist of the world championships in ballroom dances Elena Samodanova is called the most strict judge of Dancing with the Stars Russia. No wonder, as she has worked on the similar shows in other countries and has dealt with such huge stars as Ricky Martin, Rihanna etc. So we decided to get all the comments from the first hands.

MK -Elena, now you are a judge of DWTS Russia, which is being produced in Moscow, but in general you live abroad…
E – Yes, now most of my time I spend abroad, in LA. Before that I lived in Hong Kong and Sydney. Also they invited me to dance for China and Australia to represent these countries at international competitions and to work on tv dancing projects. Also I did teaching there : I worked at dancing studios and taught both young kids and adults. Together with that I started working as a choreographer and created free programs for other projects.

MK – In your opinion, what is the difference between the Russian show and similar shows in other countries?
E – They are all very different even if the franchise is the same. Each country has its own cultural and national peculiarities. But in each country the show is very popular, as the audience enjoy following the celebrities’ development. In Australia I worked with Ricky Martin, Seal. At another Australian project I worked with Paula Abdul and Olivia Newton-John. In Hong Kong I worked with Rihanna, Ikon, Sheryl Crow. In the USA I was lucky to work with Elisabeth Berkly, the star from “Show girls”, and Jack Osborne. I met Bruce Willis and Jeniffer Lopez…

MK – How did you happen to become a judge of the Russian project?
E – It was very unexpected and a pleasant surprise. In November 2014, when I was working in Hong Kong, I received this offer. And when I learnt about the charity aim of this project, my last doubts vanished. Even now working abroad I remain Russian : I promote Russian culture, I love Russian food and literature, my daughter is brought up in our tradition.

MK – Do you sometimes have debates with other judges?
E – Yes, it happens, and I think it is good. If we all put the same marks, the show would be very boring. And it is also good that our judges pay attention to different advantages and drawbacks of the work of each pair. For me technical aspect is very important, because I judge professional competitions, and there technique plays a very important role. Very often Segey Filin and I share the same point of view. And during the last two shows we gave very similar marks. And his comments very often reflect not only his opinion but mine as well.

MK – They call you the most strict judge of the project. Is that true?
E – It was the least wanted role for me, I’d love to be a fair judge. When I became part of this show, I was not familiar with Russian show business, as I was away from the country for many years. Maybe that’s why my marks were unbiased. I just watched a dance, judged the technique and put marks. Besides the pair must be able to deal with their nerves. They should come out on the floor and show what they can do. Adrenalin must help them deliver a good performance, but it shouldn’t spoil their dance.

MK – As you are a finalist of the world champs, you must definitely have a strict daily schedule, right?
E – I grew up in the sports and dancing family, so we had a certain life style. In my family no one smokes, no one drinks alchohol. In Russia you should also keep an eye on how much pastry and desserts you eat, as there’re so many tasty things. I have just one rule – I don’t need any restrictions if I do physical exercise. If I have eaten a cake, I go to a sports centre. I squat even when I brush my teeth. And when I cook I push myself up from a table. I try to combine use and pleasure.

MK – What are your other interests apart from dancing?
E – I enjoy bikhram-yoga, which you do in a room with very high temperature. I also love surfing and horse riding. Among my hobbies I can name making videoclips. I create different montages as memorable videos from recordings we have in our home collection. And of course I love cooking. Mainly I cook for my daughter Olivia, and we often cook together.

MK – Your husband is a professional dancer Gleb Savchenko, who also participates in the show. Tell us how you two met
E – We met in a dance studio in Moscow. At that time we both had other partners, but we never competed against each other, we were just friends and communicated. It happened so that Gleb went to America and then called me and offered to take part in a show together. In New York we learnt more about each other, and the feelings appeared. We have been officially a couple since 2006. And we have a wonderful daughter Olivia, who was born in Hong Kong. But even after our girl was born we kept competing and became 3 times Australian champions. So our daughter helped us in our career and cretivity.

MK – The partner of your husband is Adelina Sotnikova. Aren’t you jealous?
E – No, absolutely not. I’m very glad that he has such a wonderful partner that any professional can only dream about. We trust each other, and besides many moments that can seem strange to ordinary people are absolutely normal for dancers and artists in general. I see that they work very very hard. And all the feelings and emotions that we see and that dancers show on the floor – love, agression, flirting – simply must be present in a well choreographed dance, like in a movie or a musical. As a professional I know and understand all that, so I can’t be jealous, but I approve of that.

MK – Is your daughter Olivia fond of dancing?
E – Yes, she likes dancing very much, she watches us dance, and travels everywhere with us. She does classical ballet, and in America she visited a dance school where she did step and jazz-dance. Now she also does gymnastics, to develop sports spirit and muscles, swimming and horse riding. I believe that you should develop a child in different areas. But I don’t want her to act under my compultion , I want Olivia to choose herself what she likes.

To read the interview (and see the beautiful photos), visit Woman Hit. Also, be following @NastinLi at twitter as last week she translated the show for us. @TeamSotka is also updating us on Gleb, Adelina, and Elena. Too fun and here’s to DWTSRussia on Saturday. #DanceMakesCountriesComeTogether Heads up: Gleb and Adelina have a “Hip Hop” dance this week.

ETA: Another heads up: Gleb is also in the new People Magazine’s DWTS Special Edition. Be sure to pick up a copy at News stands everywhere. Thanks to Abby for the heads up!
