DWTS “Who Wore it Better?” – The Pre-Season 15 All-Star Edition, Part I!

This season, we opted to do things a bit differently – as we have with just about every other regular feature we do each season, since the format is a bit wacky, to say the least 😛 First, we’ve divided WWIB into two parts – mainly to accomodate the fact that Kirstie & Maks’ and the 13th couple’s (who we now know to be Sabrina & Louis) promo photos have yet to be released, but also to buy us some time for the labor-intensive task of finding good pictures for some of these 🙂 Secondly, we’ve included the couples’ promo photos from their original seasons for comparison as well.  But as always, we’ve offered up our usual snark commentary on each of the costumes, for your enjoyment 😎

Battle of the turquoise & black lace corset dress/Kelly & Alec vs. Kelly & Val:  Kelly & Alec’s season 1 promo pic vs. Kelly & Val’s season 15 promo pic vs. Edyta in the season 9 pro tango demo

Courtney: The Iceman cometh! Wow, even Alec’s promo pic screams “I have no emotions” to me.  And while Kelly is a bit better, I still wish she’d actually smile in her promo pics – the whole “smoldery non-smile” she does just seems like she’s trying too hard to me.  And I’m probably the only one that feels this way, judging from some of everyone’s initial comments on the promo photos, but I’m not really all that wild about Kelly & Val’s pic…you’ll see I’m not much of a fan of the couples that went the “smoldery” route with their promo pix.  As for the costume itself – gotta go with Edyta on this one.  Granted, it’s hard to hold a candle to Edyta in pretty much ANY costume, but I think I like it better with a lace skirt, as opposed to a fringed one.  And while I was cursing under my breath while putting this edition together about how BAD some of the costumes have gotten since Randall left, I thank my lucky stars we’re not still stuck with Designs to Shine, who costumed the first season. Can we say “tacky”? 😯

Heidi: Val sez, “You…are sooo sexy.” To which Kelly sez, “You are sexy, but I am sleeping with my cousin’s best friend’s husband’s brother and am simply toying with you as a cover to hide our true looove….” That is my long winded way of saying, Kelly is a soap actress…they only do smolder.  Sometimes well, sometimes not – and Val is a huge step up from Alec in terms of emotion and Kelly has evolved to smoldering with her mouth *closed*. 🙂 The dress you ask? I go with Edyta sans fishnets.  Although I think it’s cuter in the shorter length.

The verdict: Just say no to soap opera smolder.  Read more..

DWTS 15 All-Stars: The Great “Previous Dance Experience” Debate – Kelly Monaco Edition

Ok, so for a NORMAL season, this is the time where I’d usually cull videos from YouTube that show our new crop of celebrities doing dance-related things in their past that may or may not help their performance on DWTS, and then Heidi, Vogue, & I would point & laugh and generally have a grand ol’ time offering our commentary 🙂  But obviously, this season is not following that pattern – there’s not much point in looking at videos of Kirstie dancing around in the kitchen scene of Look Who’s Talking or Drew Lachey gyrating onstage with 98 Degrees when we already have footage of them dancing on DWTS…so why not take a look at some of their best & worst performances from their original seasons, and see how they stack up? In addition, I’ll try to add videos of any dancing the celebs have done SINCE their season, that may or may not help them this time around.

Today we’ll start with the ladies, and we’ll start at the very beginning: season 1, which Kelly Monaco won.  For her best dance, I picked her freestyle:

And for her worst, I chose the waltz:

Ok, first thing that jumps out at me here: the bar has definitely been raised quite a bit since season 1 – the level of the dancing is much higher now than it was in Kelly’s season, which could pose some big problems for her.  I’m always a bit reluctant to pick someone’s freestyle as their “best dance” (because I think freestyles are usually pretty universally-pleasing, since the couples can do whatever they want), but in this case, I feel like it actually had quite a bit of ballroom content and thus was more on-par with what she was capable of in a regular dance.  With that being said – it’s still a pretty weak freestyle, when you look at the freestyles we’ve seen since season 1.  Kelly’s getting off-time, missing steps, and generally looking pretty wobbly on her feet – it may have gotten a 30 back in season 1, but I’d be surprised if it would have gotten anything more than a 23 in a more current season…and I think she’d be lucky to even break into the 20’s during the all-star season, if it’s going to be as competitive as I think it is.  As for her waltz – it was during the first week of the first season, so there was undoubtedly some major nerves at work and I think she just ended up very stiff & scared.  And did I just see some pretty blatant lifts in there??? I don’t necessarily think it was bad…it just wasn’t very interesting to watch.   But there isn’t going to be any room for nerves on this season, so Kelly’s going to have to overcome those pretty quickly if she wants to stick around.

So has Kelly been doing any dancing since season 1 wrapped that might help her this time around? Well…yes and no.  She did a brief stint in the burlesque revue Peepshow in Vegas back in ’09, along with Mel B (WARNING: It’s slightly racy…avert your eyes if you’re offended by pole dancing, lingerie, and gyrations):

Ok, so it looks like Kelly didn’t do a TON of real dancing in Peepshow…seems like just a lot of gyrating suggestively and being a sexpot.  So while it might not necessarily help her with her actual dancing, I do think it might help her stage presence in that it will help her evoke a more confident, sexy, smoldering character for dances like the rumba & Argentine tango.

Court’s verdict: All things considered, I think Kelly’s unfortunately one of the weaker contestants this season, and has got a lot of hard work ahead of her if she expects to stick around – the fact that there are several non-winners (Joey, Kirstie, Melissa, even Pam) on this season that are quite a bit better than Kelly in terms of dance skill tells me she’s got some tough competition.  However, she’s also still young and in good shape, which could give her an edge over some of the older contestants.

What do you guys think? Does Kelly have the juice to go all the way, or will she flame out early?

DWTS Season 15: “All-Star” Season – Pick your Stars!

In case you missed it, last week I posted all the celebrities that have graced Dancing with the Stars with their presence and asked you – the reader – to choose your favorite star from every season. In that post you were only allowed to choose one celebrity per season.

Earlier this week there was a post asking you to pick six male and six female professional dancers that you would love to see back for Season 15. Since there were a lot of requests for the inclusion of the DWTS Troupe dancers, stick around for Friday to see what I have planned. But back to the celebrities:

I have compiled all the stars that have received the top votes in their respective seasons and put them all into two polls: Men and Women. Now you can pick up to twelve stars (up to six male and six female celebrities) that you would love to see come back for Season 15 of Dancing with the Stars.

Since the past several seasons have been twelve couples, I figured it would be best to see who you would choose for your Six Favorite Male Celebrities and Six Favorite Female Celebrities from across the seasons.

Note: I know it has been said that Mario Lopez is most likely not going to do Season 15 because he is too busy, but since this is just what the fans want… and he has been a popular celebrity, he’s still part of the poll. 🙂

Enjoy!

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does dancing fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =)

DWTS Season 15: “All-Star” Season – Pick your Pros!

You didn’t think I’d forget about the professional dancers, now did you?

In case you’ve missed it… last week, there was a post with polls asking you – the reader – to choose one star per season that you’d love to see come back for the “All Star” Season of Dancing with the Stars (aka Season 15). There have been a lot of pros that have come and gone throughout the seasons, so now is your chance to pick the twelve pros that you’d love to see come back.

I have included pros that have only been on the show for one season, those that have left the show for greener pastures (Alec Mazo, Edyta Sliwinska and Julianne Hough). So anything goes here.

Why twelve professional dancers? For the past several seasons the show have had either eleven or twelve couples… so I figured this season should include twelve couples as well. 🙂 I suppose we’ll see.

Enjoy!

DWTS Season 15 – All Star Cast Wish List

So what I’m going to do is start with a series of polls: namely you get to choose who YOU want to see from every season of Dancing with the Stars from Season 1 all the way to Season 14. The polls will be up for a few days… and once the polls are closed I will personally draw up how the top celebrities did in their season in comparison to the averaged data from all the seasons.

At the end of all the chosen celebrities I will create a mock elimination post and hopefully by then we’ll know who would REALLY be cast and I will do attempt to do the same for the casted celebrities – hopefully – before the show starts in September again.

Excited? Well you better be… soon you’ll have an example in the form of Mario Lopez and later of Mel B since they are the only two that we know of that has been approached for the All-Star season. If they end up being top in the poll of their respective seasons, wonderful! If not, well then those are freebie posts for you 😉

DWTS12 – Louis Van Amstel: “Not only are you a teacher with your celebrity, you make her grow”

In a new interview with ABC 4 in Salt Lake City, Louis Van Amstel talks all about Dancing With The Stars from how he made it on the show (his slicked back hair in those earlier days are a crack up. I love it!), what the show was like in the very beginning in the first Season, and what it’s like to teach the celebrities. It can be “painful”. See why below or at the link. Super interview! I like why he says he will never leave Utah!

DWTS Tacky Dance Themes Part 2

Since all the songs this week are new-ish… we are deprived of being able compare Season 11 celebs with other celebs in the past… That being said… the good news is that we have other trips down memory lane to give you! Meaning another round of Tacky Dance Themes! *evil cackle*

So here you have it… round two of the Tacky Dance Themes, if you are wondering what the heck is this about… go to Part I and enjoy the commentary.

Now what other couples decided to have some strange dance themes prior to the “Dancing Through the Decades” theme and “Movie Night”?

Season 5: Mark Cuban & Kym Johnson
Dance: Samba
TV/Movie Program: I Dream of Jeannie
Tackiness Quotient
Music: The Theme song itself is pure instrumental, which traditionally I don’t consider as tacky. But there are so many nuances in the music that just screams the TV show that this deserves a Score: 3
Costuming: Oye, you have Kym as Jeannie in full regelia and you have Mark trying to be Major Nelson? Well, more like a geek is a better description. Granted Kym looks really good in that costume… Score: 2
Nuances: Too many to count, it didn’t bring me to a carnivale as a Samba should, it just reminded me of the show too much. Mark’s facial expressions didn’t help matters any… well at least they were having fun. Score: 2.5
Conclusion: Final Score: 7.5
I’ll admit it was a fun dance, and Kym looked good in that costume. But the concept that Jeannie would do her thing to make her partner dance is just so cliche. Still it’s better than the Star Wars routine as a dance… meaning that I don’t mind rewatching it, on occasion, with a bottle of vodka on hand (and I don’t drink).

Season 5: Cameron Mathison & Edyta Sliwinska
Dance: Paso Doble
TV/Movie Program: Superman
Tackiness Quotient
Music: Superman Theme Song… enough said. Score: 3
Costuming: You have Cameron wearing something with the letter C emblazoned on his chest similar to Superman AND Edyta wearing almost nothing but a cape? Yeeeaaaah Score: 3.
Nuances: It was okay, I can’t really think of anything, I mean it’s not like Cameron flew onto the dance floor… so Score: 1
Conclusion: Final Score: 7 out of 9
What’s a Superman dance without a cape? And what better dance to make use of a cape but the Paso Doble! The only thing that’s confusing me is whether that piece of cloth that Cameron was waving around was suppose to be his cape or is it Edyta? As odd as that sounds… it worked! Kind of, sort of, maybe.

Season 6: Jason Taylor & Edyta Sliwinska
Dance: Paso Doble
TV/Movie Program: Monday Night Football
Tackiness Quotient
Music: Monday Night Football Theme Song… ok I haven’t really watched football and didn’t really recognize the song when I first listened to it without the visual, which is a good thing so they get Score: 1
Costuming: Did they wear the colors of Jason’s team (Miami Dolphins) at the time of this season? OMG, I think they did! Score: 3.
Nuances: This seems to be a clear cut and dry Paso Doble, except for that last move at the end. Nothing that really screams tacky… but darn that last pose did it for me. Score: 2
Conclusion: Final Score: 6
It was a respectable Paso Doble, but Jason has the physique, plus this partnership moved on to be second in a Season that included Kristi Yamaguchi. Though that hood that Edyta had tacked onto her costume…. why? why? That was so distracting.

Season 6: Adam Corolla & Julianne Hough
Dance: Paso Doble
TV/Movie Program: Zorro
Tackiness Quotient
Music: Puhlease… it’s the Plaza of Execution, where else could it have come from? Score: 3
Costuming: *rolls eyes* Just look at Adam! Enough said. Score: 3
Nuances: There wasn’t much in terms of nuances… but dammit that unicycle did it for me (not to mention Julianne stripping Adam’s mask off)…. Score 2.
Conclusion: Final Score: 8
It was a fun dance, a bit stiff… there was “fluff” that I could do without, but the unicycle bit was pretty darn entertaining and just died when he got onto his feet… still >.<
Since the video cannot be embedded… here’s the link.

There you have it for this next set of Tacky Dance Themes! Stay tuned for the next installment of Tacky Dance Themes… 😀

DWTS 10 Evan & Anna Dance Comparison

Evan Lysacek & Anna Trebunskaya ended the season with five recycled dances:
– Two of them happen to be the Viennese Waltz: the first done on the Week 1 and the second one on Week 10
– Four of the Five dances are Ballroom dances (Viennese Waltz, Waltz and Quickstep)
– Two of the recycled songs were originally done by celebs in Season 8

Interesting stats for these songs…

So starting with the two Viennese Waltz’s:

The first song was I’ll Be by Edwin McCain Edwin McCain - Rhino Hi-Five: Edwin McCain - EP - I'll Be as originally done by Season 8’s Lil’ Kim and Derek Hough on Week 5.

And again on Season 10 Week 1 as done by Evan and Anna

The second Viennese Waltz was done to Billy Joel’s Piano Man Billy Joel - The Essential Billy Joel - Piano Man originally on Season 5 Week 4 by Jane Seymour and Tony Dovolani.

And of course on Season 10 Week 10 by Evan and Anna.

DWTS Freestyles Season One & Dance Off

Check out the entire Dancing with the Stars Freestyle Videos Series as we cover the freestyle videos from every Season of DWTS!!

In honor of Season 10’s finals we are going to take you down a path of memory lane of past Freestyle dances of the finalists over the past nine seasons (and one dance off).

Many thanks to Lori for the idea.

Dancing with the Stars premiered in the Summer of 2005 to rave reviews. Season One only began with six celebs and six pros… (Trista Sutter & Louis van Amstel, Evander Holyfield & Edyta Sliwinska, Rachel Hunter & Jonathan Roberts, Joey McIntyre & Ashly Costa and the following two below).

Season 1: John O’Hurley & Charlotte Jørgensen
Song: I’m So Excited by the Pointer Sisters
Placement: 2nd Place

Season 1: Kelly Monaco & Alec Mazo
Song: Let’s Get Loud by Jennifer Lopez
Placement: 1st Place
Start at 1:50

After the winner of Season One was crowned there was a massive viewer outcry in regards to the judges overscoring Kelly due to her connection to ABC. So producers capitalized on the passion of the audience and created a Dance Off held over the span of two days in September. The exception is that the viewers have total control over voting…

Dance Off: Kelly Monaco & Alec Mazo
Song: Get the Party Started by Pink
Placement: 2nd Place
Start at 2:25

Dance Off: John O’Hurley & Charlotte Jørgensen
Song: I Am What I Am as sung by Gloria Gaynor
Placement: 1st Place

DWTS 10 Kate & Tony Dance Comparison

After watching “Movie Night” on Dancing with the Stars, I realized that there were several songs used this season that were recycled from previous seasons.

Since this past week Kate Gosselin was eliminated, I decided to post up her “recycled” dances first. Not only Kate & Tony’s dances, but the previous celeb and pro to have danced them…

Below are two dances done to the song She’s Always a Woman Billy Joel - The Essential Billy Joel - She's Always a Woman by Billy Joel… both done as a Viennese Waltz

Season 6: Marlee Matlin & Fabian Sanchez

Season 10: Kate Gosselin & Tony Dovolani Read more..
