Derek Hough talks “MOVE” and Dancing with the Stars

Derek spoke to the Miami Herald back before the tour started and they apparently just published it to coincide with MOVE arriving in Florida.

Derek Hough’s twist on a recent Season 20 Dancing With the Stars episode was the “Ouch!” heard ’round the country.

On April 20, while rehearsing for the 10th anniversary special edition of the ballroom dance competition show — Hough is its most winning pro — the 30-year-old Utah native broke a toe on his right foot after an errant kick. He then sprained the inside and the outside of his left ankle, and ended up with a bone bruise (the latter after tumbling down stairs while attending to his toe).

Bad break and bad timing. You could practically hear the accountants gasp.

Hough was in his customary race toward the finals with gymnast “star” partner Nastia Liukin (the couple finished in fourth place) and simultaneously starring in a New York Spring Spectacular dance show at Radio City Music Hall. He was also readying rehearsals for the second annual MOVE Live Tour with sister Julianne Hough (a judge on DWTS and actress).

MOVE — with both stars intact, he swears — cha-chas onto the Hard Rock Live stage Friday. “I learned the show in three days this year,” he says.

Hough is involved in every aspect of MOVE — choreographing the routines, dancing, singing and engaging in banter with his younger sis.

“I’m feeling much better, I’m getting strong,” Hough says on the phone during a break in rehearsals in Los Angeles as carpenters slam together painted sets, costumers run around and giant fans blow air around the Houghs.

For Hough, work is always a race against the clock. He wasn’t even supposed to be on the DWTS anniversary season due to the Radio City gig, but “I get passionate about challenges,” he says.

“It was outrageous traveling back and forth, rehearsing and doing two to three shows a day. Instead of scaring me it got me excited — let’s see if I can do this. But I’m a team player and very loyal person, and if I could make it work and be a part of that 10th anniversary, which was a milestone, I thought it important to be part of that.”

Jo Swafford took some amazing photos at the shows she went to in Texas. See purederekhough.com for more coverage of MOVE Live on Tour.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Dancing With The Stars Live Tour Interview With Peta Murgatroyd And Witney Carson, Another Press Review

Just a few media items for the Dancing With The Stars Live Tour. First, Peta Murgatroyd and Witney Carson talked with Richmond.com about the new tour and Dancing With The Stars. Here is a take with Peta below. More at the link with Witney.

Fans of the show will get to see a variety of new dances during the tour — some choreographed by the show’s professional dancers and others by choreographer Mandy Moore.

Professional dancer Peta Murgatroyd hopes the experience of touring will bring the dancers even closer together. “I am thinking the touring side is where you get to do your bonding,” she said, speaking from Los Angeles and joking about the “tight quarters” on the bus. “The pros are like family. We have a great time. We have mutual respect for one another.”

Murgatroyd danced on Broadway before joining “Dancing with the Stars.” Originally trained in ballet, she competed in ballroom competitions from ages 17 to 21. “Ballroom is extremely different than ballet,” she said. “I had to throw away a lot that I learned in ballet. I didn’t know what I was doing at first. With ballroom, you have free range to do what you want with your artistry. It’s an amazing art form.” She thinks that shows such as “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars” have brought ballroom to the forefront. “Before, it was boring and uncool, something your grandparents did. It wasn’t for young people,” she said. “Now, ballroom dancing is on another level.”

Working on “Dancing with the Stars” is intensive. Professional dancers mentor their celebrity partners at least five hours a day, seven days a week during the competition. “We have a lot on our plate,” Carson said. “We have to come up with choreography, wardrobe and production. You have to please the fans, and you have to please the celebrity. I always want my celebrity walking away like he had the best experience possible.” She and the other pros will only have about 72 hours off after the tour ends before they begin mentoring new celebrities for the winter season of the television show. “We are going nonstop,” Carson said, adding that the workload doesn’t bother her. “This is a passion of mine. It’s something I have wanted for some time.”

Also, here’s a review from MassLive.com. This review says this show is a “vast improvement” from their first.

Clearly, Willis has the moves and voice to succeed on Broadway.

In addition to Chmerkovskiy, “DWTS” pros Peta Murgatroyd, Witney Carson, Artem Chigvintsev, Keo Motsepe, and Emma Slater strutted their stuff alongside troupe dancers Alan Bersten, Brittany Cherry, Sasha Farber and Jenna Johnson.

With a lineup heavy on professionals and light on celebrities, the Mohegan Sun Arena crowd was treated to 90 minutes of top flight ballroom dancing, including a lively jive set to “Jump, Jive an’ Wail” and performed by Slater and Farber.

Melissa Rycroft, who was the Season 15 champion, was a congenial hostess for the night. A recent knee injury kept her off the dance floor, but she moved the evening along at a brisk pace.

The current tour is a vast improvement over a previous trek, which played the Mohegan Sun Arena in January.

Gone was the poorly scripted banter between the participants and a greater emphasis was placed on dancing.

Chmerkovskiy, Murgatroyd and Carson, all “DWTS” champs, were clearly crowd favorites.

Dancing With The Stars Live Tour Review From Worcester, Massachusetts

Telegram.com from Worcester, Massachusetts reviewed the Dancing With The Stars Live tour. Overall, they said it “lead with joy”. Here is more.

The show began current “DWtS” champion Valentin Chmerkovskiy leading a jokey routine to Mungo Jerry’s “In the Summertime.” Chmerkovskiy, renowned for his physique, was wearing padding underneath his clothes to make it appear that he had “let himself go” since the the season ended. It was a cute and jokey false start, which was thankfully interrupted by former “DWtS” champion Witney Carson, kicking things into a gleeful and high-spirited jive to Wilson Pickett’s “Land of 1000 Dances” and, then, joined by the entire company, a spectacle of a routine to Walk the Moon’s recent hit, “Shut Up and Dance,” which is kind of obligatory for all contemporary-oriented dance shows these days.

The addition of the rest of the dancers — Emma Slater, Keo Motsepe, Artem Chigvintsev, Alan Bersten, Brittany Cherry, Sasha Farber and Jenna Johnson — created a bright, cheerful energy, and while there were a few moments of intensity throughout, that was the vibe that prevailed. Make no mistake: All of these dancers are fantastic and technically skilled, but the audience was there for more lighthearted fare, and the troupe delivered.

Rycroft, who refrained from dancing because of an injury, proved a charming host, riling the crowd up by consistently mispronouncing “Worcester” and cajoling the male dancers to take their shirts off, which was cute for a while but, admittedly, the drooling got a little tiresome. (Although judging from audience reaction, that might be a minority opinion.)

But the night’s first show-stopper belonged to Willis and Chmerkovskiy, with a re-creation of their foxtrot to Hozier’s “Take Me to Church.” In a lot of ways, the live rendition was superior to its televised performance. Willis seemed comfortable, but has an intensity about her that gives her an immense amount of presence on stage. Her lines were clean and flowed effortlessly, but there was also an edge there which, regrettably, was often lacking throughout the night.

Dancing With the Stars Karina Smirnoff to Co-Star in ‘Tango Shalom’, Production Begins Next Month

Awww, this is such good news for Karina Smirnoff. According to The Wrap, the Dancing With The Stars pro is slated to be in a new iddie comedy called “Tango Shalom”. Production starts in July.

Karina Smirnoff of “Dancing With the Stars” is set to co-star in the indie comedy “Tango Shalom,” TheWrap has learned.

Gabriel Bologna is directing from a script by Joseph Bologna and Claudio Laniado. The writers are also part of the ensemble, which also includes Lainie Kazan and Renee Taylor.

Jos Laniado stars as Moshe, a Hasidic Jew who receives a cryptic message from God to dance the tango, after which he struggles with his beliefs, his family and his community.

Smirnoff will play Viviana, a pretty tango instructor who oozes sensuality. The role is a strong fit for Smirnoff, who is a professional ballroom dancer.

“Tango Shalom” is slated to start production next month in New York.

More at The Wrap. So, does this mean she’ll be out as a Pro for Dancing With The Stars season 21? I hope not.
